furrycactus
BYOND Key: Furrycactus Character Names: http://prntscr.com/ke73or Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Orange-Brown (Sand Coloured) Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I'm interested in playing Unathi because I've had my whitelist for Tajarans for a little while now, and I'd like to broaden my horizons a bit more, and I find Unathi to have a fascinating culture. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Unathi have different cultural expectations placed on them as to what is and isn't considered to be proper behaviour, which differs based on gender as well; and it can also differ somewhat depending on whether an Unathi is from Moghes or Ouerea. Mogheans are also tend to be more standoffish when it comes to contact with other aliens, while Ouereans are more open to it, since they used to be under the joint administration of the Sol Alliance and Jargon Federation. They also have a society that places honour highly, and a social caste system. They have some other things, like that it's disrespectful to refer to one by their first name unless you're close to them and it's rude to touch them before introductions. They also have three seemingly predominant religions (or rather two, with one being seen as heresy) that all have different doctrines and expectations and would each have their followers act in somewhat differing ways or have different opinions on the topics of things like cloning, cybernetics, and synthetics. Character Name: Arkani Su'kath Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Arkani was hatched in a clutch of two, in a small village on Moghes, not too distant from Skalamar, in the year 2430. He was part of a small family, with one brother and two sisters. As would be expected, their mother looked after them and the home, usually with some help from his sisters, while his father, a doctor, handled his duty to work and provide. Arkani was raised in his early childhood with the typical ideals of most Unathi, placing the importance of honour highly, and his family were always followers of the Th'akh religion, however they were never intensely fervent with their beliefs. As a child, he had lofty dreams of eventually becoming an honourable warrior, as many children his age did. Arkani recieved a typical enough early childhood; he was cared for alongside his three siblings by their mother, while their father worked to provide resting in the somewhat lower section of middle-class, he was semi-well off, and was lucky enough to have access to some degree of formal education. Arkani and his family had heard of the first colonization attempt of Ouerea, and its disastrous results, and they were shocked and saddened at the news, but being six years old at the time, Arkani's understanding of the situation was quite limited, he simply knew that he should feel sad about it, so he did, but didn't think much else of it. That was, until a year later, when his family had been given the opportunity to take part in the second colonization effort. Naturally, they were greatly conflicted by the possibility, as the last attempt had been a total failure. However, this time, the effort was being made with the assistance of the Sol Alliance and Jargon Federation, and both those civilizations knew a considerable amount of knowledge about spaceflight, right? Comforted by this fact, his parents had decided that they would accept the offer. Still, having just turned seven years old a week prior, all Arkani knew this meant was that he'd get to ride in a spaceship, and that they'd be moving to a new and exciting place; which left the child ecstatic. The family boarded the ship along with the other colonists, and took off to the second habitable planet in their system. Arnaki was enraptured by his time in space, even though it was relatively short, and it opened his minds to infinite horizons that he'd never thought of before. He experienced as much awe and wonder as was possible for a child his age; and this love of the infinite stars would follow him into the rest of his life. The news of the Contact War that arrived three days later, however, was incredibly grim and demoralising to his parents, though Arkani still had limited understanding of the matter; as it was something he wouldn't properly understand until several years later. While the news was grim, instead of stewing in dark feelings or dread, his family decided to properly put themselves into the colonisation effort. Something Arkani was not ready for was the harsh life of colonising a new world, however. He was a child, so he was kept spared from the worst of the work, though it was still a rough life; however not an impossible one. He grew up amidst a growing colony on a new world, sheltered away from the war and nuclear fire on Moghes, in what became New Skalamar. He grew up under the more liberal and democratic ideals employed by the Human and Skrell administration of the planet, and when he finally came of age, he joined the city watch. Though his parents were disappointed that he didn't follow his father's footsteps and become a doctor, as his older brother had too, they were satisfied that his position was one that was respectable enough. In 2457, when the direct control of Ouerea was returned to the Hegemony, Arkani found himself highly unnerved and anxious about this development. Having been under the administration of Humanity and the Skrell for the majority of his life, it was really all that he knew. A return to the direct control of the Hegemony meant inevitable changes to the way of life that he'd grown up with, and much of what he'd heard of life under them was negative, many blaming and placing the sole responsibility for the Contact War at their feet. These concerns, perhaps combined with his deep fascination with the stars, prompted him to reach out to some NanoTrasen representatives, and make several inquiries, and he began speaking to them more and more frequently. He was eventually offered a position within NanoTrasen's Security department, due to his experience the city watch. This was a job that he hastily accepted with glee, as it gave him the opportunity to work in space. All was not perfectly seamless though, as there was slight friction with this choice. His father had accused him of attempting to avoid his duty to marry in chase of a lofty dream, but eventually receeded when he saw how much the pursuit meant to him. With his family's begrudgingly granted blessing, he went on to work on the NSS Aurora. What do you like about this character? I like that he has a clear goal in mind to work towards. Even though he may have always wanted to be a warrior in his youth, he hasn't been able to quite attain that goal, and maybe he never will, but he still holds himself to a certain standard when it comes to acting in an honourable sense as a watchman, and as an officer, and looks down on people that don't act in a similar way. This could create some interesting points of conflict with officers of other races, I believe. I also like that, while he's far from acting like a child now, he still has an incredible eagerness and desire to explore the stars to some extent. I think he'll be a fun character to play. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd put myself between 7-8/10. I feel that I've improved quite a bit since I began on Aurora, but I still have a ways to go. Notes: If there are any questions, concerns, or feedback (positive or negative) I'd love to hear it, truly! Link to comment
FreshRefreshments
+1. I trust Furrycactus completely with a Unathi whitelist, and know from PMs how much thought hes put into his application. Looking through, I dont believe I saw any lore contradictions, which isnt surprising considering how careful he is about that. All his characters are played well, and I have complete faith he'd play a Unathi well. Link to comment
elianabeth
I've played with Furrycactus before, and they're great at making believable, realistic characters. They know when to share the spotlight in roleplay, and that is incredibly valuable trait to have in a game like SS13. I have full faith that they'll have no problem keeping in character and fleshing out Su'kath, so +1 regarding roleplay-abilities. I'm not super familiar with Unathi lore, so instead I'll ask questions regarding your characterization of Su'kath: You emphasize that Su'kath joined Aurora to see the stars - How do you plan to portray this in roleplay? Will he try to find excuses to go EVA, or receive EVA training? Will he patrol near mining and science to ask stories of other characters? What kind of hobbies has he picked up relating to his star-obsession - photography, sketching? Also, what other kind of hobbies does he have? I understand he's interested in being a warrior - was he influenced at all by the human/skrellian culture's ideas of warriors, due to his life growing up on Ouerea? How will he deal with interacting with other aliens on this station, as well - is he comfortable with humans/skrell, or even Moghes-born Unathi? Link to comment

He would certainly look into EVA training as soon as he can, but wouldn't try finding unnecessary reasons to go out. He'd go out eagerly if he ever got the opportunity, though. Asking for stories from mining and science from time to time definitely sounds likely, though. His hobbies related to the interest consist of learning as much trivia about stars and planets as he can. Photography and stargazing are also a popular pass-time of his. He learned a small amount of how warriors are sometimes portrayed in human and skrell history, but they didn't influence him much. He's comfortable with humans and skrell, and will generally freely interact with them in a friendly manner. Moghes-born unathi are slightly different however. Despite being one himself, he grew up hearing terrible things about the Contact War, and the Hegemony too as a result. He wouldn't act extremely against them, but likely a little bit anxiously or mistrustful, at least at first introductions. Link to comment
Doxxmedearly
A really good app. You can tell a lot of time and care has been put into it, and that this whitelist is genuinely interesting to them. Cactus is a really enthusiastic player who tries to involve themselves in the community, and has really good OOC conduct. They've upheld whitelist standards for some time now, and I have no reason to believe they'll be anything but an excellent addition to the Cool Lizard Players Club. The character is very solid, and you do a good job of avoiding extremes in "Everything's good" and "Horrific Tragedy." The colonization was a risk, his clan isn't 100% supportive of what he does, and it's good to understand that colonizing a new planet had plenty of hardships. I'd like to see this character around, and get to know them more as they play, to see how he balances out his goals and dreams versus the wishes of his clan as time goes on. Solid +1, excellent job. Guest Marlon Phoenix
Hello, sorry for the delay. It's always a nice application that shows an Ouerean Unathi trying to reconcile their detachment from the mother culture of Moghes while still trying to remain a conservative and traditionally-minded person. The character is tasteful and the feedback positive. Application accepted! Link to comment
