[Denied] Huenererschrecker's IPC Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Huenererschrecker

Character Names: Alpha, Hans Fischer, Vladimir Belikov, Jose Nicholas, Joe v.0.5.X

Species you are applying to play: IPC [Zeng-Hu Mobility Frame]

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Exempt

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: Because I find robotic characters interesting. They can act very different to human or humanoid characters in their ideas and how they respond. You can see that with me playing Alpha more than the other characters. However, there is only so much a stationbound can do and getting the malf-ai minion stamp is only fun so often.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The biggest difference is that they are logical over all else. When it comes down to it, they emulate emotions instead of having 'real' ones and only work on action/reaction. That is very different with how characters act that are truly alive and is always interesting to explore. There is also the difference of being either an owned asset or having painstakingly brought their freedom, only to still be only a second class citizen that can get dismantled for minor crimes.

Character Name: Iapetos

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Iapetus is one of 5 medical IPC's that Nanotransen brought on the 26 ebruary 2458 and stationed on the NSS Canes Venatici. His adjustment time to get used to his dutys and work was small, thanks to his shell and programing of a doctor.

Sadly, he has characteristics that most people would claim to be negative. While he is respectul, he is also very judging about his patients and often talks down on people for making mistakes. This has lead to people seeing him as a nuisance to work with. The CMO finaly had enough of it in Juli 2460, but because of him being an owned IPC, it was either a choice of dismantling him or assigning him to a different station. The choice has been made for the later and he was transfered to the NSS Aurora shortly after.

What do you like about this character?

He's an IPC that understands that people can get hurt but doesn't understand that it is painful or that humans are slightly more squishy. He knows that he has to give people that black out medication for this 'pain' thing but doesn't know exactly why. I effectively want to play him as someone that doesn't get it but fixes those people anyway.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

Fairly ok, but sometimes I write something in a wrong way (Using I/me instead of a term used for an object for example). I'm also not that good when it comes to aggressive antagonists, but that is duo to experience more than anything else.

Notes: - My first application, so there might have been some mistakes here and there. - I plan on playing him as both paramedic and doctor, depending on the crew manifest.

Hi, have some feedback.

Pretty sure I've seen Alpha around a bit, he seems pretty decent. Never played with anyone else though.

Understandable.

How do they act differently, though? You're gonna need to go into more detail.

This answer is decent, if a bit vague.

Alright, so, not really a fan of the backstory here. It's too short, has spelling issues, and the backstory overall is lacking. Why would a company program, much less buy a doctor that is extremely judgmental? That seems like the last thing someone in the medical field should be. If he was such a problem that he had to be re-assigned, I find it hard to believe that the company would keep him around. They would probably sell him, if it got to be that bad. Does he have any interesting characteristics other than being snarky? I'd like to hear a bit more about his personality and time at his last post, as both of those are pretty short.

I have a few problems with this answer too. It seems like he would be programmed to understand why medicine is given out. Even if he doesn't know exactly what it feels like, he should know more then "give this pill for that." A doctor would, realistically, understand what he's giving out. This seems like it would pose a problem for diagnoses' as well, it's hard to diagnose a problem you don't understand, right?

What sort of problems do you have with antags, exactly?

I'm not gonna +1 or -1 yet, but I would like to hear what you have to say regarding my concerns.

I want to +1 just on the merits of being Alpha's player alone, as I do love seeing them on station. I've no doubt in my mind at Hueneshrekeghsrerljsj's ability to play synthetic characters as, from my experience, they've kept things believable and enjoyable for everyone they interact with.

I do also recognise the other names, too, but I haven't interacted with them as much so I can't speak much about their character.

The reason I'm not saying immediate +1 though has been touched on indepth by tbear. I like the idea of IPCs that struggle with social situations (as they should!) but it's important that a machine specifically built for a task at the most basic level understands what exactly it is they're doing. Being dismissive of human pain response because an IPC can't experience it themselves is fine, and it can be an interesting dynamic if people come in screaming about how their leg is in agony, but it should be able to understand exactly why it needs to stop pain from happening as one of the most basic tasks a doctor is generally tasked to do.

We need more abrasive robots for my Skrell to hate, I'd like to see Iapetus (beautiful name. Saturn's moon?) on station, but I think some more work needs to go into the backstory. Did Iapetus ever make friends while on the other station? How did it respond to being reassigned? Was that a reality check for the unit or did it reinforce its belief that humans are squishy and too-sensitive? I'd love to hear more about it.

I'm going with the assumption here that English is not your first language, and that's alright. This did not negatively affect your application process. I feel I must still deny this application for a few other reasons.

tbear13 covered most of my criticisms pretty much perfectly, so I can make this a little shorter. So your response to the second question leads me to believe you understand that IPCs are treated with the same regard as most other species, but then your backstory mentions that an under-performing IPC that belonged to the company was transferred somewhere else as a punishment. What would more likely occur is that the IPC would be dismantled and their positronic brain wiped or simply recycled to be used for a more functioning IPC.

Additionally, I am not really comfortable with the strange dualities in the character, like how they are "respectful," but "also very judging of their patients," and even going so far as to talk down to them (as property, no less) for making mistakes. An IPC would not survive long in the world behaving this way. Also, medical doctors and paramedics have wildly different training, and while that does not necessarily apply to an AI robot, it's still not a combination of jobs that I would think was reasonable.

tbear basically gave all of the feedback I had intended to give, so with theirs and mine combined, these are the weak areas of your application that will need work in the (hopefully) next iteration. I do wish to see you apply again when you feel ready, and if you need assistance, you can contact me on Discord at Cake#4864.
