Guest Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Due to a little chat in Msay, this thread has been revived: http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=136 Time for the community to make a decision. Do you want to allow AI's to use famous AI names or not. The proposed rule change would eliminate references to other AIs (SHODAN, GLaDOS, etc.) but would also prevent AIs from being overt references to other famous personalities. You could still have a John Travolta AI, however you would be unable to reference to the fact that you were programmed to mimic Travolta's personality by some semi-insane scientist. In the hope of not losing that, I would like to suggest we impose a specific ban on names of famous AIs only.
K0NFL1QT Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 They should be subject to the same 'no referential names' rule that everyone is.
Guest Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Blatant references? Yeah, gonna have to say not to allow them there. If they're subtle pokes at gaming or media culture, I say it's okay. Ripping off GLaDoS isn't cool, though.
canon35 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Names like GlaDoS, S.H.O.K.A.N, or Greivous aren't cool, but subtle references are, yes.
Guest Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 There is no distinguishing Blatant or Subtle names. This will disallow all reference names like we do to crew on the station.
Frances Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Could we have a third option? I have nothing against gimmicky AIs trying to copy the personality of say, Einstein. My issue was always about AIs copying other AIs.
Guest Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 This is purely a naming thing, it wouldn't stop people RP'ing AI's with a personality's.
Frances Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Even so, wouldn't it be preferable to let people name AIs after references if they wish (in good taste)? I thought the main issue (at least it was when I made the original thread) was to get rid of blatant references to other AIs (the problem isn't the referencing itself, it's the copycat storytelling).
Guest Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I'm the wrong person to answer that. I'm all for AI reference names as long as it's not a direct copy(name and personality), that's what programmers do, they copy eachother and rip off other programs. I don't know how to answer that, the wording in my first post probably got messed up. The question should probably be, do we hold ai names under the same rule as carbon as we don't have a written rules for AI names. Characters must be named following a Firstname Lastname model (e.g. "John Smith"). No honorifics, nicknames, or middle names (with exceptions for compound names such as Van/Von/Bin X). Think of your in-game name as the name printed on your work ID. Avoid reference/famous/joke names, please. Which doesn't really apply to AI's except maybe the "Avoid reference/famous/joke names, please"
Frances Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I'll try to present my point more clearly. Right now, a user could create an AI which is pretty much a direct copy of John Travolta's personality, and name it "Travolta". There's nothing wrong with this imo, as long as you don't start naming your AIs Hitler or anything of the like (which would probably warrant admin intervention anyway). (And yes, I already see some people coming to tell me that Aurora is a serious server and that no decent scientists/corporations would program an AI after the personality of some age-old celebrity, to which I'll retort that players already do silly AIs all the time, and it's actually pretty fun, if not at least manageable. It's a matter of opinion though, really.)
Guest Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I honestly see it possible for a nutty programmer to set up a backdoor for an AI to immediately freak a wig in terms of personality. "The word 'peanuts' triggers me, Cap'n." -P.I.R.A.T.E.
Guest Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Options updated and vote switching re-enabled. There have been many cases of that happening. Somtimes it's as simple as one line in a code. Edit: Didn't realize adding a new option caused the old ones to be lost. We don't really have a naming policy with AI's and Borgs at the moment. That is kind of what we are deciding here.
