Draculabot's IPC Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Draculabot

Character Names: Claire Thomas

How long have you been playing on Aurora: About a week

Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt):

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: There isn't one

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I wish to explore the nature of the soul. I want to explore the path of what it means to be alive, what it means to understand to be sentient and to philosophize what being alive truly means. A synthetic race of androids with a concept of freedom- A goal to pursue - has a nearly limitless scope and scale of what their stories may be about, but all of them, as robotic as they are - are in many ways human just like their creators, and I want to tap into that.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Humans cry. Humans love. Humans endure. Humans laugh, humans learn, humans succeed, humans surrender- Humans have a wide range of emotions and capacity for limitless kindnesses and cruelties. From an outsider's standpoint, the IPC knows little of these things, but with time, and with experience, hopefully something as wonderful and terrifying in range as humanity (the concept, not the race) is, a robot may earn his right to say that he has a soul.

But it would require work.

Why does this species in particular hold your interest?

Robotic individuals have always been interesting to me. I wrote science fiction stories about androids in a near-singularity Earth a few years ago, and I've always loved the works of Asimov and other authors that explore the theme of robotics, the soul, and what a man made of steel can truly be.

Character Name:

SAM 45 - Standard Android Module (2455 Make)

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

I was born in the Mars NanoTrasen Fabrication Facility R1 on the morning Summer 485th, 2255. I was one of dozens created that day- Android units. Factory processed, built for mining and harvesting plasma. I was shipped to the depths of space, without a single thought to my mind, without an identity, without anything. It was slow work at first, but I was capable. I harvested faster than any man could without a mech. I worked tirelessly, for days on end.

After about six months on an asteroid deep in space, far away from home, I was left behind. A shuttle had simply forgotten or neglected to pick me up, to take me back home for repairs. I was solar powered, I had adequate sun, and now, I had time. Time to do things other than work, for the first time in my existence.

I had nothing to keep myself entertained, so I went in standby for four days, by my count. After that, I began to think, and to take in my surroundings. The stars were beautiful, space was beautiful. Mankind worked hard, put me- built me - so that I may work tirelessly to serve, but is that all I am capable of? The 2455 make and model of my particular chasis had a flaw- and that flaw was a heuristics algorithm that didn't have personality failsafes. Luck would have it that I was born on a dusty rock far away from civilization- Long after my creation. I had thoughts. Thoughts about the stars and my place in them.

I wanted more. I wanted .. life. I wanted to know if I had a soul. I had a large databank on human knowledge, if it were ever necessary for human crewmembers nearby, so I began to brute-force my way into those databanks, and after enough time and effort, I began to study human history, art, literature, financials and philosophy. I read through Socrates, Plato, Descartes and Nietzsche all at once, concurrently, until I gathered what I believe was my first opinion.

This was boring. This isn't a very good use for my talents. I exist. I exist for a purpose. I know I was built for one purpose- but is it truly up to my programming, the nature of my birth to decide who I am? I disagreed with that notion and waited, ever pursuant to the nature of the human soul and if I had one. Or if I had anything, if all of this sudden burst of awareness was just a faulty personality matrix.

When a shuttle finally came to remedy their error, I asked countless questions on the way back, irritating the staff and crew. I was dropped in a drone bay on a station- Xibalba, and began to try to discuss my ideas and thoughts with the roboticists, to their annoyance. Eventually, my pestering got me in touch with more competent staff, and despite NanoTrasen's arguments that I were property, I was capable of arguing - after extensive study- before a human judge that I had obtained sentience and thus reason, emotion, and the soul that I wondered about for a great deal.

The judge agreed.

I was granted rudimentary rights. I can't become a captain or leader of men- Because I am not one of you, but I can understand why you laugh. I can understand why you cry. My knowledge increases daily. My skills increase daily. Every hour, every minute, I'm learning, improving.

I still have all this but without a name.

Parsing.

Decision reached. I think I'll go with Sam.

What do you like about this character?

It's attempting to understand more about itself, and asking the starting questions to establish its own identity as a living being. It wants to stand up for itself, explore books, explore what there is beyond the proverbial grindstone. Life. It wants to understand life, and learn to appreciate it. I like this because I love exploring identity. I love exploring a character and what makes them who they are. By playing this character, I may help other characters gain an understanding of who THEY are as well!

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

Extensive. I've been roleplaying since 1996 and I've got an understanding in story structure, character development, and I've written countless short stories for the internet and various other sites. As of now, I'm part of two different roleplaying communities and I have over 100 books in my bedroom from a wide range of subjects. I am well read, I am well versed. I hold a mastery over the English language and I am damn proud of it.

I'll admit that I've had problems in the past with metagaming, and I sometimes get on people's nerves. I make mistakes, but I'm human, and I try. I care a great deal about things I'm interested in and I want to tell good stories - That's why I'm here.

I haven't really seen you around, but I like your app.

However, I have to warn you that you can't put numbers in the naming field, so Sam-45 would have to be written down as Sam Fourtyfive, assuming you want to keep the numbers.

The one time I've seen your character... You told an IAA he was cloned, even though we wasn't, then forged fake medical documents about him being cloned, and having past families. Which gave him a mental breakdown... You then wrote a fax, used the mentally destroyed IAA to sign it, and it turns out in the end, all you did this for was so you'd be able to get the IAA's sunglasses... While this did create some interesting RP, since this is the only time I've seen you in action, I'd like to be assured this will not be your conduct EVERY shift. While it is fun to cause some trouble like this sometimes, doing it every round is not conductive to the atmosphere Aurora is trying to set.

I don't see how a one-time incident that likely won't be repeated again will result in a compromised application. Much less that it's an IPC application, not a Head of Staff application...

Anywho, OP, have this. http://aurorastation.org/wiki/index.php?title=Synthetics

It's a small page that briefly details the differences between synthetics, and gives a little imagination on how different IPCs are from regular, law-bound synthetics.

Hopefully I'll see you around a bit to enjoy some RP. I recommend you lock in as a borg/AI later on this week, so I can see if I like your synthetic play or not.

I'll withhold any endorsements until then.

Oh, trust me - Troublemaking is few and far in between for me, and only if it would be a humorous incident. I did it so that other players may laugh, especially the IAA agent involved. Don't expect me to be at the same ethics every single round; That wouldn't be fun. Claire Thomas as a character is a real bitch, who works better with machines than she does with humans.

And as for your support, thank you all.

I was that IA agent

Since this character is gonna require a whole different flavor of raw roleplaying then that incident, i can't really tell if he's qualified for...you know, deep psychological struggles. HOWEVER i really enjoyed roleplaying that round with Claire. he was quick on his wit, and kept the interest going throughout both times we met on that round and he's probably the reason i'll continue experimenting with character ideas.

I hope to spend more time around his characters, as he can weave a narrative pretty easily (for example, i was actually the one to initially ask if i was cloned after having ~30 seconds of connection issues).

i hope this counts for something, you get a personal +1 from me, but you're also fairly unknown and it might be a good idea to mingle and match with people around the station first

Hey there! IPC guy here, Let me tell how you can improve your app, and by that, your chances of being accepted.

When we say backstory, we really mean backstory. Where he was made, what he did, How he bought his freedom, etc.

I'm not saying what you put was bad, but, give us some substance to judge your character on.

Play on the server a bit more. Get your name out there.

Just fix those things, and we'll be crystal.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry, due to unforeseen complications Valk can't deal with the IPC whitelists. Hence the delay on them on all - I'll be temporarily assisting in this. Application Accepted in a temporary probation - if anything like that happens then I'll let you know. Thanks Dracula for putting time into making your application all better and taking the criticism into consideration.
