melodramatize
BYOND Key: Melodramatize Character Names: Verda Ryals (cargo tech), Effie Mclagan (corporate reporter), Samara Easter (lab assistant), Fen Blackburn (security cadet) Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character: white Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: I’m very interested in exploring what it feels like to play a species with social norms and history so different from that of humans. The idea of the Dream and other psionic interactions is intriguing. Mostly, I want to explore a character who grew up in a sort of restrictive, homogenous culture being exposed to different ideals and values via other species aboard the Aurora, and explore them discovering themselves and what it means to live in a system so much bigger than the planet they grew up on and the system of government that told them to be a certain way. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: One big thing that differs between Skrell and humans is how homogenous their culture is compared to that of humanity, and how much more control their government has over their people due to psionics and being able to read and influence their thoughts. Additionally, Skrell live much, much longer lives than humans, so their perspective towards things tends to be much more future and long-term oriented than that of most humans. Character Name: Triex Xyla Please provide a short backstory for this character: Born on the cold, icy planet of Aliose in the year 2341, Triex grew up under the loving care of their three parents before leaving for university for the first time, gaining first a masters in biotechnology and statistics and then PhDs in theoretical physics and mathematics. After graduation, they began work developing new technologies for use by the Federation, eventually even becoming an Idol. However, their research quickly became more controversial as their interests turned toward long-distance teleportation; the Federation quickly shut down their lab and revoked their Idol status. Infuriated at the Federation-imposed restrictions on what they considered to be invaluable research, Triex relocated to Eridani, where they were eventually contacted by a cell of the Resistance and recruited to their efforts. At their encouragement, they applied for a position at the Oran branch of Nanotrasen, and then a transfer to the Aurora, where they could continue their research into telescience and other communication technologies in an effort to aid the Resistance. What do you like about this character? I think that Triex will be different from other Skrellian characters on the station due to their secret affiliation with the Resistance and their opposition to the Federation propaganda and system of running, which they feel stifles the technological advancement of the species. They have a tendency to be sort of anxious, and can be a bit of a people-pleaser by nature which I think will lead to fun interactions with other members of the crew. How would you rate your role-playing ability? It’s improving as I get more used to how to play SS13 and can work some more personality into my characters beyond asking questions on how to do tasks, so I would say 7/10. Notes: Triex tends to not sleep much, due to not wanting other Skrell to discover their Resistance allegiance via the Dream. When they do sleep, it tends to be for very short periods of time; they often appear absolutely exhausted as a result. Edited September 24, 2020 by melodramatize added character Link to comment
Hepatica
True is a great person and roleplayer, enjoyable to interact with ICly and OOCly. I'm sure they'd be able to make a great skrell. +1 Link to comment
Sycmos
I've spent long enough chatting about lore with True in Discord to know that they will make a good WL player and do their best to contribute positively to the community. +1 Link to comment
Snakebittenn
We came up with some quick questions. 1) Their educational fields are a lil bit disparate. Skrell tend to focus on depth rather than breadth. This is a little less of a concern but something that was brought up. 2) Is there a specific reason their research got them kicked out of idolhood. 3) What exactly is their resistance involvement. I disagree, as statistics, mathematics, and theoretical physics are all math-related degrees. Theoretical physics is a branch of physics that employs mathematical models and abstractions of physical objects and systems to rationalize, explain, and predict natural phenomena. The only one that I could really see being a bit disparate would be biotechnology, which I can change to physics if you would prefer. 2) Is there a specific reason their research got them kicked out of idolhood. Triex achieved Idol status for their research into cheaper and safer methods of bluespace travel, but when their interests turned towards long-distance teleportation, their reputation began to suffer due to this research being illegal within the Federation (according to the Lore wiki). Their benefits from their Idol status mostly came in the form of research grants; they lost these with the loss of their Idol status, and along with that came the shutdown of their lab due to lack of funding. 3) What exactly is their resistance involvement. Triex is a member of a small cell based out of Eridani, where the members believe that the Federation is equally authoritative to Glorsh and must be overthrown. They are not, however, inclined or supportive of violence, and instead are focusing their efforts on researching teleportation technology in order to aid communication and cooperation between cells. Their Resistance involvement is, obviously, kept secret, especially around other Skrell, and they applied for a position at NT in order to access funds to continue their research. Link to comment
Snakebittenn
We really appreciate the further thought you put into this app. Given our talks before about Skrell society, I'd be happy to approve you. Link to comment
