MEDTECH Posted October 1, 2020 Share Posted October 1, 2020 (edited) Greetings ladies and gentlemans, I started to fiddle a bit with BYOND's mapping tools, and because of the increasing feedback I got, I decided to try to make a simple storage for the science department, and here I am to submit this little project! This proposal arises from the fact that we have many products (Weapons, dangerous chemicals, AI boards, pins for the weapons, detonators or tools, etc.) in the R&D laboratory that should not be in plain view, only protected from the central hallway by two panes of glass and a little bit of vigilance. We only have one ID-locker lockers in the telescience at the moment, and we can't use it because of the spare clothes. Hell, some rounds, I have three boxes of pins on me, two thermic drills, and two tesla weapons. They are only protected by the cameras, some plasteel walls, a lockdown button for the RD, and one or two doors. It's a new target for the antags too. Here is my first simple design for a storage on the main level, using the empty space in the maints tunnels: Spoiler And here is my second design for a storage, with a lot more space, and probably a vault section: Spoiler What do you think of them? Captain Gecko Posted October 1, 2020 Share Posted October 1, 2020 Yes please, we need a place to store our things, just like in the Xenoarcheology Atrium with the Long Term Storage room. Because seriously, having a full team of productive scientists is great, but by an hour and a half, RnD quickly ends up filled with guns and other contraptions, Circuitry is filled to the brim with drones, and there isn't any place to store those, really. I guess we can always search around maintenance for a crate and use it to store the smaller items, but bigger ones like large assemblies require other solutions. Also, not only does the existence of such a room would make sense (I mean, once again, the Xenoarcheologist has a room to store his things, why would the other scientists not have their own too?), but this could also give more roleplaying opportunities. For instance, an antag could try to steal from this sort of science vault and leave with new prototype weapons, the room could become the last bastion of a besieged, rebellious science team, or it could be the hiding spot of a changeling, waiting for an unlucky scientist to come by, alone, in the privacy of this tiny room... The science sub-level is more like a fortress, as you can only go there by EVA (no shaft in the maints), or by crossing all the science department in front of everyone before taking the elevator. It's more vulnerable on the main level, because you can get in by disassembling the walls, by the maintenance tunnels, or just by having a basic science ID, Link to comment

Have you taken a look on my suggestion on this forum which is exactly a research oriented vault for highly classified (pure rp) research data and interesting round-start items? Link to comment
melodramatize Posted October 3, 2020 Share Posted October 3, 2020 I also really like this idea--it would give us members of R&D a place to put things and remove some of the clutter of the department, and I agree with what Gecko said about it adding some interesting options for antags. Would it be like the armory, which prevents bluespace teleportation within? Link to comment

I can see your point. Another thing is that we may have to extend the station if we want a storage on the sub-level. Yup, and I'm all for it, as it's in the same vein. I don't have placed any inhibitor for now, the area count as a R&D standard zone. We could place one, or make it AI monitored, but I think it may be too much.
