Caelphon Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 So, instead of a daily topic, we're moving to a weekly topic because the amount of daily subjects will soon run thin. Anyhow, what are your takes on synthetics - everything about them! (factions, origins, etc)

I think they're the best frame, and by large should be the majority of IPC populace (like in Biesel, not necessarily on station due to how "cheap" they are to reproduce and also being some of the first frames avaliable to Positronics). I'm unsure how to expand them in lore, but I would like to see an expansion. While I somewhat-enjoy the current origin of the Positronic, I think it should be a splice of two things; alien-vault technology and skrell technology. This would give "evidence" of possible synthetic revolution, but also would be counter-evidence as people could say majority of the positronic comes from alien-vault technolgoy which ofsets the skrell technology. I'd really like the SIM / SLF movements to make a return. Looking back of the stuff that was done, I genuinely think that this would give a "good" and a "bad" side to the advancement of IPC rights. To me, it feels like we're advancing IPC rights quite quickly. Lancer's current pathway to IPC rights feels a lot slower and in my opinion a lot better. A slowburn, instead of a fastburn, unlike previous maintainers of Synthetic Lore Development. His management of the species has brought me back to enjoying its lore! I think Scrappers and District 14 (I think its 14?) are ripe for the picking, and I'm waiting in anticipation for when the Synthetic Lore Team eventually begins developing them.

It technically already is Skrell technology as far as I recall because it's derived from Glorsh-made mining drones. Unless you would count Glorsh as completely separate from the Skrell in terms of its technology that it developed. 4 minutes ago, Caelphon said: I think Scrappers and District 14 (I think its 14?) are ripe for the picking, and I'm waiting in anticipation for when the Synthetic Lore Team eventually begins developing them. I would be somewhat interested to see expansions on this too. We know that IPCs are not supposed to be "illogical" in what they do, meaning they typically won't do something "just because"; though I'm curious what all synths will do when put into extremely dire situations. What exactly they would be willing to do, and just to what depths.

"Everything changed in 2407 on the planet Konyang when a Terraneus Diagnostics survey team stumbled upon a sealed cave housing preserved assumed Glorsh-era mining drones." Not necessarily Glorsh-made drones, presumedly Glorsh-made! Which is why I'd personally like to see a more canon'd version of this, but its not a hill I'm going to die on, just think it'd make more sense!

So this isn't an original suggestion, but I honestly can't remember who, when or where this was said so I'll repeat it here. Given that baselines are effectively the default IPC in society, it feels like there should be more variations in their design. Not in a mechanical way, they're supposed to be in the middle chassis and they do that well, but things like other head shapes or limb designs could sell the 'common with variation' vibe I'd expect from them. I'm not going to claim I've thought this through much, but it was something you reminded me of. 28 minutes ago, Caelphon said: I'd really like the SIM / SLF movements to make a return. Looking back of the stuff that was done, I genuinely think that this would give a "good" and a "bad" side to the advancement of IPC rights. This would be interesting. Right now I struggle to justify not taking a generally positive outlook on synthetics with my characters because there has been very little evidence for them being "bad" in recent lore. More generally, I'd like to see more synth focused factions that players can actually use for their characters. The SLF and Purpose are interesting from the overall lore standing, but not so much when making a character. And while I really, really like the IPC purchasing freedom stuff, I think it does suffer from the overall lack of context we have on in game economics (Though I totally understand why we don't go down this hole.) Still, if a baseline works as a bartender, how long would it take to buy their freedom? What about an accessory frame? Working as an investigator? It gets a little hard to conceptualise, at least for me.
