Species you are applying to play: IPC Baseline

What color do you plan on making your first alien character: White

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

IPCs offer some roleplay opportunities that simply aren't available for other species such as Humans. Moreover, the current situation of IPCs along with their own nature makes possible a multitude of interesting backgrounds for IPCs along with some of the most varied characters around, despite being all in the same species group. combine this with the soon to come Konyang, and i felt it was time for me to finally get this WL

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

IPCs are probably the most diverse species in the entire catalog. Their many possibilities for backgrounds and developments makes it so that things usually assumed like gender, social role, belonging, and so on are entirely up in the air for IPCs. For example, one IPC may choose to be as human as possible, assuming a shell frame, a gender, a gender role, a human personality, and see itself as effectively human. Though another IPC may see itself and their species as an entirely unique thing, and decide to distance itself from any trait commonly associated with organic lifeforms, such as not having a gender, not seeing itself as part of any human group, not sensing the need to assume any type of discernible personality, their relationship to humanity as a whole and so much more. Of course that some IPCs may not have this choice, and simply be a very smart machination under control of its handler, but even this aspect of the species is entirely unique to itself.

Character Name: Gauze-2

Please provide a short backstory for this character

Gauze-2 was created on 04/05/2460 on Nomad Alpha by Einstein Engines as a medical IPC capable of performing surgery, and was quickly sold to a local private Hospital in Lycoris. There they started working as a company owned IPC surgeon, also receiving their current designation of “Gauze-2”.
During the Solarian Collapse and swift ascension of the Solarian Restoration Front on Lycoris, Gauze and other medical IPCs from the same company caught the eye of SRF officers, and were to be repurposed for military duty  to fuel their war machine. However, Gauze ,along with others, escaped the planet with the help of one of the Hospital’s nurses, who had a relative that owned a cargo freighter. Along with other refugees, they made way for San Collete, where Gauze would volunteer to the Civil Guard in hopes of eventually achieving his freedom and escaping this messy situation.
Due to their medical capabilities, Gauze was assigned as field surgeon, which granted them a bigger survival chance during their two years of service.
In 2464 after their two year voluntary service was complete, Gauze was sent to outside Solarian/Wildlands space. After receiving their freedom, they quickly joined Wildlands Squadron as a surgeon not only to start making their own money, but also to guarantee their freedom.
After some work with the Wildlands Squadron, Gauze requested to be reassigned to work in the SCCV Horizon, primarily to experience a diverse work environment in which they could better shape their understanding of this universe as a free positronic. The transfer was accepted under the pretense of skill improvement and sharing of experience with medical professionals from other corporate backgrounds. As of September 2465, Gauze is en route to the SCCV Horizon to begin work.

What do you like about this character?

That they are in essence a clean slate looking to form their views of the world in the multi diverse work environment that is the SCCV Horizon. This would allow me to slowly shape Gauze into something new based on their interactions and experiences with the rest of the crew.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?
Honestly? I don't know. But i think I'm decent enough to be able to play an IPC and not fumble it.

Hi, thanks for applying, just some concerns for the application:

Quote

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Please expand on how a positronic brain learns, how self-preservation works, how an IPC thinks, and how IPCs are treated differently throughout the Spur.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Gauze was alive during a war where they would have been exposed to nearly every perspective in the Spur, from Dominians, Gadpathurian, Konyanger, free shell volunteers, etc. fighting alongside it. This should reflect more in its background and how it views the Spur other than "served for two years".

Additionally, Lycorii characters cannot be played.  I understand that they escaped as a refugee but I would rather err on the side of caution in this ruling The SRF lists uniquely among the worst regimes in the Spur and had its own uniquely oppressive policy towards IPCs and people who act against the interests of the SRF and this doesn't necessarily reflect in the backstory.  There's room for a combat medic in all the other (former) Wildlands factions.

A positronic usually learn skills in a very similar process to organic brains, learning through memory, a previously made act, and knowledge, technical information that can be achieved through datapacks or more usual means.
As for self-preservation, every IPC seeks their own safety as a primary directive, but what that safety and self-preservation means can vary a lot between positronic to positronic, and even vary depending on how old the positronic is. This also involves on how IPCs think, since every action performed by one has reason and motive behind it.
Regarding how IPCs are treated by the Spur, positronics usually hold a very poor position in organic society. If they're not property, they still are pretty much discriminated against, and viewed as lesser by a big chunk of the population, specially in places where free positronics arent as common as in Biesel or Konyang for example.

It does matter, but i wanted to keep the backstory brief enough to not be more of a chore to read. Its time on the Civil Guard provided Gauze with a window to the spur and its many cultures and peoples, but not exactly an understanding of it, or its place on this corner of the galaxy. Ultimately, war made its experiences clouded and somewhat limited to a military aspect of life for an already young positronic, but opened Gauze's mind enough for it, when it had the chance, to pursue a fully understanding of the spur and itself on another diverse work environment such as the Horizon.

Since i tried to keep the backstory brief, i also ended up neglecting this part of Gauze's backstory. The experience did in fact change Gauze. Its near fate at the hands of the SRF triggered its self-preservation to be free, which made it volunteer for the Civil Guard in the first place. Moreover, it gave Gauze the notion that property is no state for a positronic to be, seeing how the IPCs left behind in the SRF were ultimately treated.

I hope this clears up all questions. Thank you.

The issue primarily with the Lycorii background is that the SRF had total control over the planet - I find the idea of the SRF causing Gauze to reassess what it means to self-preserve very interesting, and it can involve the SRF, though I would prefer you pick a place other than Lycoris. Novi Jadran, for one, is a planet where anti-SRF resistance was at its peak.

I understand avoiding a chore to read, but at the very least, expanding on details such as whether or not Gauze keeps in touch with the person who "rescued" them would help flesh out the character's past.

I understand. Though the most notable SRF occupied planets, Novo Igman and Lhokgon, were invaded in 2465, which would create problems for Gauze's backstory. Could i say that Gauze was from an unspecified planet on the Northern Wildlands that fell into SRF occupation as soon, or very early, to the start of the war?

I'll keep this in mind of future WLs. Thank you for the heads up.

Though dependant on a Positronic's "hardware" capacity, personality can develop through time, usually from a combination of memory, unique priorities on self-preservation, and extensive experience with environments owned to long times of living and and rationalization of one's self. As such, older positronics tend to have more present personalities due to all of the former being more well developed.
