The Horizon Bodega

Right now, we have the commissary - a small room far off the beaten track which lets Operations flog spare items. It rarely gets used.

What we need is a Bodega. Imagine it: a small shop selling things the crew needs. Snacks, generic clothing item, some SCC themed souvenir tat. I've seen similiar shops in big corporate office buildings, universaties, cruise ships...

The Bodega as I envision it will be in the service hallway. It will replace the vending machines, bar back room and toilets, or the library. This way, it's a highly trafficed area which also ties into it's big new thing: a new job.

The Retail Assistant (name pending) is a member of the Service department, but has basic access to Operations and Operations comms, to help organize getting items for the Bodega. Supplies can also come from hydro (which has much expanded biogen options) and the kitchen.

Obviously this idea needs some work, and mainly mapping, but I think it would bring a fun new role without taking too much away from other exsisting departments.

Get rid of the commissary, it's whatever anyway. Way better idea. Only thing is to not cut out the bathrooms, if we can. We have not enough anyway. But I'm sure there is a nice space somewhere around that hallway it can be put in.

I suppose their purposes could be merged yeah. The location of where it could go is complex however, there really isn't space in the service hallway without removing or moving something else.

That feels a lot like it collides with the commissary

It is intended to replace it

I am on the fence about it.

On the one hand I wouldn't mind seeing an actual store that has the layout and feel of a store where you can buy basic necessities and stuff. Perhaps it could even be considered to give them some of the merchant mechanics for purchasing select items, like through a special supply-line exclusive to their merchanting license.

On the other I fear it might overstep a bit with the chef & merchant, the former of which I already feel can be neglected by the crew by their location (like when everyone hangs around the central ring instead of visiting the service roles). It could be done with a departmental switcheroo.. I've long felt the library should be in a more discrete location for.. discrete meetings.

The bodega doesn't need a dedicated role, when cargo techs are right there and needing stuff to do. The commissary already opens to their ID cards. This new shop should start either with glass win-door locks or the public entrance bolted to prevent theft. The former if we are going to put vending machines into the area in addition to the shelves.

In the spirit of the old commissary, there should be a few empty shelves in the customer area and behind the counter for cargo personnel to load the shelves with things from the warehouse, or even side hustles.

Ciggies, lottery tickets, premium alcohol, pre-rolled ambrosia joints, PERFORMANCE pills, and overdrives go behind the counter.

The idea I have is to move the public garden to where the lower library room is, and turn the old garden room into the new shop location. This way it's easily connected to hydroponics for the sale of goods there. The store's desk could have access to both hanger techs and hydroponics staff

the upper library room can be remapped to contain the library's bookshelves and stuff.
