A former Alliance world lost during the Elyran Crisis in the early 24th century, Kirinyaga has become the flashpoint for decades of border tension between Moroz and Persepolis, with both powers assumed to be involved in the planet’s ongoing internal conflict. The past months have seen an escalation in Elyra’s presence and methods on the planet, with recent footage acquired by the ANN showing gunship strikes by the Elyran Navy on targets claimed to be affiliated with anti-Elyran insurgent forces. The harsh methods used by the Elyran Armed Forces on Kirinyaga have brought condemnation from the Alliance, with Xiu Fang, former special counsel to the Department of State on Tau Ceti, describing the EAF’s actions on Kirinyaga as, “comparable to those seen on Mictlan during its illegal occupation by Tau Ceti.” The EAF’s Office of Interstellar Outreach did not respond to a request for comment by the ANN. With Solarian diplomatic relations to Elyra at a historic low following democratic backsliding by the Republic, it remains to be seen whether the crisis can be deescalated before it becomes a wider conflict. Captain Garry McAnderson, with the 164th Infantry Regiment, which has been engaged in peacekeeping operations on the planet since 2466, provided the following statement to the SANN: “As a regiment mostly from Earth, not a lot of my troopers had an experience with Dominians prior to July, when their aircav [SANN NOTE: air cavalry, referring to helicopter-transported infantry] guys showed up. I can’t deny they’ve impressed us, even if we find them a bit quirky at times [laughs]. The tankers are all motivated, disciplined, and a lot of them speak Common — their commander’s some big-shot, uh, noble or something? They lay down a lot of fire — everybody feels more comfortable when we have one of their gunships as top cover — and that matters a helluva lot more than their commander’s title.” An attempt to bring in a second Dominian brigade has reportedly been delayed due to increasing tensions between the Empire and Elyra in the Southern Spur, according to a source with the Dominian embassy on Unity Station not authorized to speak publicly.
