Botanist's Tajaran App

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: BotanistPower

Character Names: Walter Brooks, Treat Hernandez, Moses Fitzgerald

Species you are applying to play: Read the title of this thread.

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Can I honestly ask why this is even a question? What color? Uhh, okay? Red, I guess, so that'd make him one of those fancy ex-aristocrat Tajara, at least in terms of ethnicity.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. I have played a Tajaran on BS12 before, actually, and have been familiar with the race of fictional manimals since their conception. I've played DND with the man who created them. He flaked out on DMing a game and for that I shall never forgive him. He regrets it (making the Tajaran).

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: In all honesty.. because I think it'd be funny. Tajaran are an inherently comedic race to me, in no short part due to the kind of person that plays them. An odd bunch, I wish to infiltrate the Tajaran player's inner circles. It's sort of like when a missionary goes into the jungle and they find him 10 years later, having assimilated into the tribe he sought to convert. What I'm saying is, who knows, maybe I'll really like it and start wanting to bone anthropomorphic cats?

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: They're not human, to start. Tajaran have an entirely different way of thinking, culture, and so on. Always a big fan of strange things, playing a Tajaran seems like a good way to spend my free time.

Character Name: Reginald Abdullah

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Reggie's family fled Adhomai shortly following the revolution. His father, the foreman of a mine and member of a noble family, sought to give his son a normal life on his adopted home of Elyra - to do this, he named him Reginald, not realizing that Reginald is a horribly uncommon name among those of Middle Eastern heritage. His mother was generally a good for nothing who only knew how to play the basilet and spend money. For that, Reginald's father was glad to be rid of her.

Quickly finding that his large horde of gold coins he smuggled past customs by unknown means were worthless (and then later finding out they were, in fact, worth something), Reginald's father became depressed. Later on, shortly after Reginald's birth, he converted to the Islamic faith, becoming one of the first alien converts to Islam. Now known as Mufasa bin Sal'raizur Al-Adhomai, Reginald's father found a new meaning in life... foremanship at a mine.

Reginald's childhood was troubled, mainly because he's a catbeast. Finding it hard to fit in among his peers (both due to his Tajaran heritage and because he referred to his classmates as his peers), Reginald adopted a rock'n'roll lifestyle. Throughout college, Reggie worked hard to earn a bachelor's degree in communications. Finding that not only was his degree worthless, Reggie entered NT boot camp and learned how to arrest a man, how to do many push-ups and how Tajaran are physically unfit for security work. Despite it all, Reggie left boot camp and finished his one year of cadetship, becoming a fully fledged security officer. Despite it all, he has never truly stopped living the rock'n'roll life - one of heavy drinking and promiscuous women, all of whom were not interested in his weird cat body.

Life is hard for Reggie.

What do you like about this character?

He has experienced the duality of man in full, living in two worlds - that of cat men and that of men men. He is almost completely foreign to actual Tajaran culture, aside from Siik'mas and the general idea that communism is inherently flawed. He's the Frank Zappa of catbeasts.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

5 out of 10.

Notes: I will change anything but the character's name. He has to be named Reginald.

Dear god, this is a beautiful application. This character is surprisingly weird and really original. He has a cool backstory that fits in with the lore, and is very unique while not being completely ridiculous, and is very odd for a Tajara. The writing of the backstory has this beautiful sardonic tone to it, which really accentuates the tone of being a Tajara separated from his native culture. And, yet again Botanist brings a majorly under-represented religious belief to the station, which I believe he will accomplish magnificently. As, in the past he has demonstrated with Walter Brooks, a Jewish character which brought his religion to the table in a subtle manner which was used to give more depth to the character as a whole, and not being his main quirk.

While Botanist as a player might be a little silly and tip toe the line, he's an overall solid dude who understands that it's just a game. +1

A thoughtful parody, as long as it shows an understanding of the foundation that it came from, is always fine with me. Even with your humor in the application you show knowledge of the species and I think I'd be happy to see you trusted to give it a shot. (I subvert the standard lore of every species I play as, just to explore how it can be done, so holding that against you would be super hypocritical.)

I've also been humorous in pretty much every app I've done, so I can't hold that against you either, because the humor isn't meanspirited and, again, you still show knowledge through it.

The fate of this ultimately up to Sue because I don't like overruling people I trust enough to appoint to manage whitelists.

Though there's this super specific problem some other loredevs have with a part of your application. Can you actually give his name and translate the cat noises? It would really help clear up some of the fuss.

I really don't know, I have never really had a good roleplay experience with Botanist. Most if not all of my interactions with his characters have left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Don't get me wrong though, your Tajara's backstory is unique and I have nothing against it. I am just worried on how well you would be able to play as a Tajara. For now, I am going to go with a -1

EDIT: Not choosing to vote on this instead.

I don't know what to say. On one hand, people are right that botanist has never been a serious fellow, in the games or the forums, but I really feel like this is an actual, serious app. Really? I don't have a number to put on this. Just think about what I said while deciding on this.

I'm whitelisted to play a head of staff and IPCs. Both of those applications were serious, as is this one. I have no idea where you're getting this 'Botanist has never been a serious lad' stuff from - seems like you're trying to push this narrative I'm some troll.

I'd like to hear about some of the times we've roleplayed together. In private, if you want.

I don't have many specifics but it was always with Walter Brooks. I have never really roleplayed with any of your other characters. (Maybe Treat once or twice) But it was mostly your character being very aggressive with other staff members to the point that I feel Nanotrasen wouldn't even hire them. I am just worried about you holding a Tajara application with the attitude that I have seen coming from Walter Brooks. If someone else can let me know that your other characters aren't all like that then I would gladly switch my judgement from a -1. I was really on the fence about it.

You're being pretty vague - I can't really remember being so aggressive that others would take notice, so I'm wondering if you could provide me with some specific instances? That said, there are a few people in a feedback thread I posted that like my characters.

Being a Head of Staff, especially the HoS isn't a cakewalk in comparison to other Head of Staff roles. It's like having about a thousand people screaming at you at once. So, people can certainly come off as being particularly aloof or aggressive. It also depends on which circumstance he was being overly-aggressive. Because in certain gamemodes like Mutiny or Revolution (to my understanding) it's generally excused because you almost have to do it to kick off the round.

You've got a track record for not being serious, and acting trollsy about things. This thread shows a lot of it in examples posted by other people, and things you outright said yourself in response. Prove to me you can make a serious application that actually sounds serious and not like you're bandwagonning a catbeast meme, and I'll reconsider my -1.

As a side note, I do like the backstory. It's everything else that makes this sem like this application and the character are a joke to you and don't deserve serious answers.

After thinking over the issues that I have had with Walter Brooks, they really aren't enough to just slap a -1 on it. I think I am just going to take away vote because it really isn't worth it as I don't even remember any specifics.
