The Salt Mines - Event feedback plox

Hi

Some of you may know (you probably don't) that I hosted an event. There was three options. Aliums, Wurms, War. The server voted for war so we did war.

Backstory: So I've hosted events in the past, roughly a year or so ago. Majority of them were good from the feedback I got and I learnt a lot on hosting events through them. Upon returning to ss13 and the server my hosting skills got a bit rusty shall we say? (My typing skills are still horrible as shit, don't expect a change).

Now hosting this war ( I use the term lightly because well.. the war didn't really happen :/) event I found that it didn't go all too well. Not to my own standards at least. My main issue in this event was I took too long to get the main thing rolling. Some of the problem to that was that it had been a long time since I hosted an event, so I had to get used to the feel/controls of stuff again. Having the war event as an option was probably also a bad idea to do as an event, with hosting experience lost.

You may have seen through my event that I don't really... how would I say this... play things lightly? If dangerous stuff is happening, and you decide to go into said dangerous stuff, you end up getting hurt? I guess saying "I don't host events that sugarcoat staying alive or being calm and relaxing?" It's just really not my style

One thing I did dislike about my hosting this event was I didn't stick to a key rule I used to. Let the players run the event and I just provide the foundations. What this means is I don't involve myself or push the event too much in any direction. I kind of set things up and then move things when needed.

The main purpose of this thread though is I want your feedback. How did you think I did in terms of an Event Host? What things can I improve on event hosting?

(No I wont host peaceful events. So don't ask. It's not what I do.)

I feel attacked and personally offended by this event.

I was forced to interact with other characters, cooperate with strangers, and develop my character in a way involving adversity. I was not given the chance to script any interactions or Metafriend any event characters. There was barely any time for ERP

Check your privilege, pump.

To be honest, I think you did fine. I was able to interact with characters I had never met, got to walk a character through the experience of dealing with coming aboard a station under attack, and had a genuinely good time. Keep in mind, I did join late. Still, I was able to have a good time.

If people see a person with a gun, they should be able to assume "shit's going down" somewhere. I don't think you've made any mistakes in your event coordination so far. I'm hoping I catch the next event from the beginning. Don't let an "end event pls" vote keep you down.

Listen, man. If people voted for combat, they voted for combat. It's their issue they went out to fight, and if they wanted a peaceful round I'm sure there's other servers and other games they can play. Now I'll admit, I have become salty over options I chose, but eventually that salt fades (At least for most people.).

Appreciate the compliments guys. However I'm not looking for feedback on my response to what people voted. That was a clear judgement I made as I just didn't feel like the event had the umph the last time I did an event with the nature of "war".

What I'm looking for is more of, "How did I conduct the event." What did you like about how I did things? What didn't you like about how I did things? It's so I can re-think of how to event host and get back on track on how I used to do them and move on from there.

I think it was rushed, poorly handled, and I personally found several things wrong with it.

For started, you never set up the custom event info thing. I was so happy to see it was extended. Even happier when I thought it was normal extended. Boy was I miffed when the station started blowing the fuck up.

Second problem I had. You blew up the holodeck, for seemingly no reason, and most of the station was gathered right around it because I assumed, "Hey, if we're going to get hit by the debris, it's safe to move to the center of the station." Well, no, the holodeck blew up with literally no explanation as to why, and killed a good number of people, and wounded even more. I wanted to do the reasonable thing at this point, and call the escape shuttle. What did you do? You said lolnope and canceled it. Again, with no IC explanation.

Then we started moving people off the station, because the entire thing was blown to hell, and atmos was destroyed. Again, you decided to to take an OOC approach and tell people to calm down, you were setting up the event, even though you already destroyed several pieces of the station.

Lastly, and this has nothing to do with you, mostly, I hate war events as much as I can hate anything about 2D spessmen. We're a HeavyRP server, why do we need to go out of our way to appease people who want something high action and combat oriented? There are lots more Combat severs than there are actual RP servers. Theres no story, nothing, just, "Hey, lets pop down some NPC hostile mobs, and let people fight." I mean, you TRIED to make a story, so points to you, but it made no sense. It started off with something described like a stay being born, and then it was a ship? It made no sense.

So, yeah. All in all, kind of... Bad. Want my advice? Don't blow up important bits of the station, and then expect them NOT to call a shuttle, especially when you also go out of your way to injure and kill people before the actual meat of the event. Set up the custom even panel. Give IC reasons for things. Give less OOC reasons for things.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll see to a couple of points and try to explain the reasoning behind them.

I used to do a thing where I would set the event info once the main event started. I admit this was poorly executed this time round and was really late into the round. I'll take this into consideration, thanks.

My reasoning for this was that I don't feel like we should just consider the environment we're playing in as 2D. Though maybe its not the best ideology to go by considering the nature of this game and how everything is built around a 2D environment. None of the explosions were supposed to directly kill people (but they did apparently) and I did find that people began to die due to the explosions. I was under the assumption that people would be able to get out of there but I was wrong. A mistake on my part.

Don't blow up important bits of the station, and then expect them NOT to call a shuttle,

I'd rather see people go along with something than wanting to end a round. Perhaps I wasn't really clear with that at all though I'm not surprised since I do agree things were rushed and I can see why it didn't make sense.

Thanks for your input though. I will take these points into consideration and work on what you've highlighted.

Ah yes the war event, I have a few things to pick at.

1. Speaking from experience here. If you do not remember the console, do not do such a big event, the console is what you

need during a event, its your OH LORD SHITS FUCKED YO card.

2. Perhaps send a fax from odin next time saying they are unable to send the shuttle? Its what I would have done.

3. You mentioned you might need a hand during the round and might have needed help. Just because we insult each-other

(<3) does not mean you can't contact me (This nigga was a gameadmin for a reason yo).

All in all, It was not bad just sloppy, I enjoyed myself anyway
