moltenkore Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 BYOND Key: Moltenkore Player Byond Key: CDB, I believe. (Character name Jane-Luc Price) Staff involved: None, I didn't ahelp at the time due to be irritated / salty. Reason for complaint: I was playing Khalid Ar'baq and It was a changeling round. The lings were trying to come up with a decent plan so long story short me and another ling managed to screw up and alert security whilst I was trying to assist the other ling take down a security officer. I believe the other player was new at being a ling / antag in general so they proceeded to attack the officer instead of removing his communication or PDA etc which of course alerted security. It was not very well executed at all. Anyway, the other ling and I ended up in the brig where we were both interrogated and gave different stories (which didn't help!). I knew I was heading for the brig and waited for the officers to put Khalid in a cell. Khalid being his usual 'smart ass' self when confronted with the law. This didn't happen however and the HoS, Jane-Luc Price decided to try and fit a tracking implant. Khalid (Mr ling) didn't want this to happen as it would completely ruin his inclusion into the other lings plans so instead turned into a monkey. The HoS then proceeded to flash and beat the monkey continuously with various security kit, namely the stun baton which in itself was quite excessive. The monkey was then choke held, handcuffed and pinned to a table (I accept the fact if someone randomly turned into a monkey in front of your eyes you would indeed stun and detain them but there is a limit to the force needed to do such). After a short while of "blahblahblah" (which is all you hear as a monkey these days) the HoS then proceeds to try and choke the monkey to death. After a while of transform, flash, choke, transform, flash, choke - a security locker is fetched and the monkey is stuffed and locked inside. During transit of the monkey in the locker I was trying to escape when the locker was suddenly dragged into a room without vents. The locker was then opened and the monkey flashed several times before being confined to its small space once again. How the HoS knew that the monkey could indeed fit through a vent is beyond me as any indication for the course of this action was not apparent to the HoS at all. The other lings showed no signs of having lesser form and even lesser signs of passing the knowledge of this ability onto the HoS. - In my opinion this is clearly very meta. Poor monkey Khalid was then dragged into xenobiology where it was placed in a pen never to see the light of the stars again. A common thing that proves rather irritating is the fact that security always seem to 'play to win' and never have any thought of creating interesting RP other than shutting down the antags completely. This honestly leaves a very sour taste in my mouth and I can see why other antags just stick to the shadows from the cruel hand of validhunting. It is human nature to be competitive but I do think some leeway is required as this type of round just leaves the antag player not wanting to continue being an antagonist at all. Honestly I am unsure what could be done to address the issue as people-are-people but being aware of the antag's role in the game could go a long way into making the antagonist actually wanting to RP and do something interesting other than being locked up in a room without vents. Approximate Date/Time: The round was almost finished on 1st April 2016 at 22:21 GMT (UK Time)
UnknownMurder Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Consider me as a player for now: I did find something very bothersome about Jane-Luc; however different story, same round. You see, I was Captain Vincent Chiffre, as we were moving to departures for Crew Transfer. The Head of Security kept on being hesitant not to bring Khalid to CT rather leaving it to rot for small period of time. I ordered anyways, OOCLY hoping Khalid would escape. Cruel Wald appears, holding the shotgun, with beanbags, aimed for Jane-Luc's head then started demanding Khalid to be released; while I was going to release Khalid... Jane showed no remorse, moved in to flash Curel Wald, and yes. Jane did get shot, but shrugged it off and said something about having armours. This was a good waste of how interesting the RP could have gotten. Curel Wald was arrested and taken to Crew Transfer Shuttle while I was taking Khalid to Departures after hearing he could break out of cuffs. I was actually hoping antag to succeed and whatsoever, I at least tried to give them a chance.
cdb Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Hi, I'm CDB. I'll give a brief bit of my side of the story and point out that you left out some details in there. First, after the initial incident where in security were alerted, you escaped. You escaped with an officers ID, fled security and proceeded to sabotage a SMES, not unexpected for an antag but it did mark you out as especially problematic. Two, as for the repeated stunning that was largely due to you repeatedly using transform/monkey, et cetera to escape your binds, I'm not sure if you realize but tracking implants actually pop out when you turn into a monkey as you may have seen, yours was let on the floor. I figured most ling players knew this and counted on you two being left in the brig, alone and able to escape with your implants left behind. Instead you outed yourself as a hostile first contact. You were indeed taken to xenobio, both of the captured lings were though the other was dead on arrival. The other lings showed no signs of having lesser form and even lesser signs of passing the knowledge of this ability onto the HoS. - In my opinion this is clearly very meta. Poor monkey Khalid was then dragged into xenobiology where it was placed in a pen never to see the light of the stars again. The only thing we knew about the lings was that they could transform, none of us had any idea to what extent that held. If one could transform into a monkey, or easily slip their cuffs. Why would the rest not be able to? I think that ultimately, you had an opportunity presented to you to remain incognito as your friend did for the longest time. Until you transformed security had no inkling that you were anything /but/ criminals and maybe terrorists(Who were just a little bit insane). That said, I do apologize for shutting down the standoff out of xenobio, the round had been wearing on and I was more than a bit tired and wanting to leave, but that's not really an adequate excuse for shutting down roleplay and taking actions which, in retrospect were dumb and dangerous, even given that I had the dermal implant on.
moltenkore Posted April 2, 2016 Author Posted April 2, 2016 Two, as for the repeated stunning that was largely due to you repeatedly using transform/monkey, et cetera to escape your binds The first time I did this I did expect a little shock or something however it just turned into full harm baton mode. I'm not sure if you realize but tracking implants actually pop out when you turn into a monkey as you may have seen, yours was let on the floor It seems after two years of playing I'm still not aware of all the game mechanics and I did not know this at the time. and counted on you two being left in the brig At this point during the round the other ling and I were pretty much in 'limbo' and not being moved to the brig cells at all. The only thing we knew about the lings was that they could transform, none of us had any idea to what extent that held. This still does not validate the use of vent-less rooms as your character could not predict that during the initial transport of the monkey. I think that ultimately, you had an opportunity presented to you to remain incognito as your friend did for the longest time. Again, back to the above point this was error on my part not knowing that the implant would be ejected when a ling transforms.
cdb Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Y'weren't in limbo. You were in the part of processing where we ask you questions and try to get explanations. As soon as I put the implant in you I was ready to move you to the brig. Also yes, knowing that you can change into a sufficiently small creature to move through the vents DOES mean we can assume you'll do so, especially when you've already proven you're intelligent enough to shift in reaction to confinement.

A monkey cannot fit through a vent without severe distortion though, it takes a creature about as big as a Spiderbot or worm to fit through. On that note, I have no idea how a xenomorph does it.. bluespace is a funny thing
cdb Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Unless this is some new thing that I'm missing, monkeys have always been able to crawl through vents.
Guest Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Unless this is some new thing that I'm missing, monkeys have always been able to crawl through vents. Monkeylings have a different flavor text for moving through vents. Functionally the same, RPly, no. It's intending to play off of the Thing in that regard. Sorry if I got off-topic, just wanted to clear that up.
cdb Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 But the important thing to note is that monkeys can totally crawl through vents and it's not a stretch to see a ling change into a monkey and assume "Oh, it can slip through vents rather easily.", no?
Guest Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Not a stretch, nope. For as long as I can remember it's been a recurring mechanic in SS13 forever, and I don't consider knowing that monkeys can climb through vents as metagaming. I assume characters can take on that knowledge in future rounds and say, "Ah, that's a sentient monkey, and it's running over to use the vents over there to crawl away like a normal monkey would." I guess, anyway, I don't know what really happened, so there's just two cents regarding what I know is certainly game mechanics. I'll stop invading now.
Shadow Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 As far as I know the player in question doesn't play anymore. Will lock and archive this in 24 hours.
