Currently they do get a different name when they do that but i think its still buggy and it gives you a random human name. We might be able to push a fix to that.

Does anyone have any non-ipc character that needs to regularly change their name? As far as i am aware there isnt a justified lore reason like different IPC models. Maybe Diona, but none of the others that I can think of. Diona I Think are supposed to change their name each time they split, but I can understand why that would be a PAIN to actually do, either way. At that point, it'd kinda be a new character anyways. Plus, what happens at runtime and who gets renamed what during gameplay doesn't affect what's written in the database.
