BYOND Key: rabbittabbit

Total Ban Length: week

Banning staff member's Key: I dont know

Reason of Ban: "self antagging every round"

Reason for Appeal: When I started here earlier in the week I didnt understand continued canon and escalation so I was told to roleplay more and have a reason for doing stuff. So I start roleplaying. This round I decided to be a drug addict, being a lab assisstant I got to work but needed phoron. Lowpop so no miners so im told to go get some from medbay. I wait at medbay, ask for help, nobody comes. Nobody is around so I break in, if im roleplaying a drug addict why wouldnt I break in????? I was told to roleplay and I did. I come back later and try to get some more phoron for more oxy and a borg stops me. I try to order him to move but he wont and the other guy has called for sec. I ask for the borgs laws (roleplaying isnt it??) he doesnt have asiimov. So I say sorry to the borg (why would I even care about taking the life of a borg its not even alive?) and start bashing him to get past. I then get told this is self antagging and I do it every round so I have to be banned, the proof being my arrest record is too long. I was roleplaying how is this not proper escalation? All ive ever been told is there needs to be a reason for it or if youre attacked go get sec. I was told the previous round was also self antagging even though that round I was kidnapped and tortured by a traitor, attacked back and then a long roleplaying session with the traitor Hugo and the office Garvin (or something like that) which ends up in me and the officer fighting and him strangling me to death. We all said in LOOC and OOC after that this was fun and a great round. Is that not proper roleplaying? Despite the other people involved claiming its roleplaying.

I was then discord banned, I complained about the ban there and began talking about the round, I was told to stop because its Ic in OOC, which i did do, but was then banned for talking about the previous round (which is apparently IC in OCO now?). I was told to stop, and I did adn was talking about something else but was discord banned for not stopping?

I'm new to HRP, and Ive been told how to improve by a couple of admins and I do those things, I have more reasons, I call sec more, I talk more I have a backstory and an appropriate bio for my character yet apparently Im intentionally not roleplaying and I dont get how at all????? Just telling me repeatedly its failrp when I ask how doesnt teach me anything?????

There are a few problems here, but, to be fair, you do seem genuinely unaware of them. I'm not giving my opinion on whether you should be unbanned or not, just pointing out some problems.

First of all, if you want to RP a drug addict... fine. But you need to make it believable. If you always end up stealing valuable minerals to make your own oxycodone, it's just not realistic. First of all, being able to make the oxycodone, and second of all, breaking in. If you character is that reliant on drugs that he must break into chemistry and steal all the time, would he really be hired? Is that realistic? I myself have a character who breaks into the bar, but he does it carefully, and covers his tracks, and doesn't really have a drinking problem. Finally, there are better ways to get the phoron. Perhaps begging for someone to make you oxycodone could be better RP.

Second of all, do keep in mind silicons here do not have Asimov by standard. Rather, they have NT default, which closes some loopholes. Now, consider this. Is destruction of valuable NT property really realistic? At all? Does your character want to be fired?

Just some points to consider, I do understand, moving to HRP can be rather jarring. You have to really get into your characters shoes and think of the consequences of your actions. I would also urge you to lower the amount of question marks you use, it can seem as if you are super sure you are right, and questioning other peoples decisions, its almost insulting, and it won't have your appeal taken as seriously. Good luck with your appeal.

A big thing here is what was already mentioned,

you might be playing a character in character, but that character is an antagonistic character

if I wanted to play a serial killer who eats people it would be in character to do so,but it is disruptive roleplay, you see?

Your character is willing to go to any lenghts to get his fix, even going so far as to break in and destroy corporate property

Now this is fine if you are playing that character and are lucky to be the antag that round

but if you want to play that character in normal rounds simply rewrite him.

put your drug addiction into exploitable details and simply try to get your fix in more subversive ways

tricking people into supplying you willingly, find unlikely allies who will supply you in exchange for something else, maybe give the chemist a message on the PDA before breaking into his office...

you know, not overact if you are a normal person who was hired to work on this station

and then you can play him like this, like someone destructive, if you are a traitor

The ban reason outlined in the appeal does not accurately reflect the actual ban reason, verbatim, as to what an administrator issued to you last night.

2017-08-09 13:58:41 || incognitojesus || incognitojesus has banned rabbittabbit. - Reason: Self antagging on a consistent basis, breaking into areas and not roleplaying a believable character since no one in their right mind comes to work and decides to break into a chemistry lab to fuel their newfound oxy addiction. - This will be removed in 10080 minutes.

According to the administrator that I spoke to briefly over this, you broke into the chemistry lab in order to make oxycodone for yourself. It was in doubt as to whether your character had skills to pull off the ability to mix oxycodone, which requires a few preliminary reagents in addition to liquidized phoron. But otherwise, characters are not expected to, as a standard, possess sudden addictions or reliance on strong painkillers at a moment's notice. It is not practical or believable for a character to suddenly summon a dependency on such things and then proceed to break and enter into a department as a result of a whim rather than natural character/roleplay progression.

You also have a brief amount of notes pointing to this kind of consistent behavior and only just this Saturday did you have a weekban previously lifted.

There's not really much I am willing to do here in terms of influencing staff member's decisions or opinions after the fact in this particular case, as I think the weekban is fair at this time. We do encourage you to read over the rules we have.

This is very helpful advice, thank you. After this incident I've gotten a lot of advice regarding what I did wrong. Admittedly I'm not good at understanding what is and isn't HRP and a lot of my initial advice was vague and from people who have been doing this for years but something like this (and some advice I got elsewhere) is really helping me understand. I feel at least part of my issue was wildly changing my character between rounds while always needing to be the centre of attention, I'm used to during slow rounds or extended to performing minor greytide to have reason to interact/argue with security. I see now this isnt the type of place for that and the idea of "play a character as if you were actually just hired on an expensive and far off space station" was lost on me. Theres a lot of things that still don't quite click or seem arbitrary to me at this stage but even I can clearly see that breaking into chemistry because nobody was there within 2-3 minutes isnt the way to go, especially somewhere where 2-3 hour rounds isn't unusual. Im very used to 20-40 minute rounds where if you want to do anything other than survive antag it needs to be done immediately. This is again me failing to adjust and take things slow. I'm trying to learn and fit in here, I've had some amazing positive RP experiences here already, mostly from those that are more experienced but it's been fun. I should accept that as a "realistic" work environment not everything is quick and handy, sec will have flaws and be slow to respond sometimes and people will do stuff thats interesting for a rounds plot without breaking shit like I was. I'm sorry for shitting up your server.

Sorry, I haven't been around recently what with college starting back up soon. I've decided that, since I've seen a marked improvement in your attitude and a real effort to try and improve your roleplaying abilities by speaking with a multitude of people in the player discord, that while the ban won't be lifted entirely, it will be brought down to a three day. Which means it will expire when this post is roughly three hours and twenty minutes old. 1:00 PM EST, really. I would also caution you to exercise restraint ICly and heed the advice that other members of staff and the community have given you.
