  1. Quite the opposite. It's pointless because no amount of logic is going to sway jackfractal. This is where most debates in the internet end up (either that or we start calling each other hilter). It's pretty rare for rational debate to really sway someone who's firmly made up their mind.

  3. Further debate: useless.

  5. As much as I don't like how casually many players take death, I also don't think this would help much. Further, it doesn't seem to match with my understanding of the IC costs associated with cloning. What could achieve a similar effect while making sense ICly is to considerably increase the time it takes to make a clone and instruct medical staff to prioritize cloning based on rank and utility.

  7. Yeah, ostracized. Like the way that turning off OOC 'cause it's too distracting and you don't want to deal with a wall of blue text is being ostracized? Or turning off OOC 'cause people are talking about anime spoilers you don't want to hear is being ostracized? Get real.

  9. I like this as the current psych office is, like you said, a broom closet. I also am inclined to agree that having no intercom in the psych's office would be beneficial, not because of AI spying (which is a pretty small issue), but because it's the sort of thing a real psychiatrist would want to minimize distractions to the patient. Adding a universal recorder would probably be handy (if there's isn't one already) for those occasions when a conversation should be logged (either for the psych's notes, or because the session is related to a criminal investigation). Further, I've noticed there's no camera in the office... something which, when the shutters are down, would make the office a blindspot. Now, I never play as a psych, but if I did, I wouldn't want to be in a room with a potentially criminally unstable patient and be hidden from the AI and security.

  11. As the staff have apparently already made their position on this matter clear (that no change is required), I'm not going to try and reply to your rhetoric (and I think I can say "your" without there being any confusion as there is only one person holding up the "let's ban politics/religion" side of the conversation). It's pretty clear that you're not going to convince people who LIKE having as few topics banned as possible, and you're not going to change your opinion no matter how eloquently (or abrasively) we respond to your points. That's fine, you're allowed to disagree, but I do have one question for you: what the hell is so bad about temporarily toggling OOC off? It's not like anyone is suggesting someone should turn it off forever... just, if a topic heads somewhere uncomfortable, toggle it for 10 or 20 minutes, play the game, and the odds are very good the topic will have gone away by the time you turn it back on. It's not like these dreaded controversial topics are... you know... common or anything. Particularly if we're only looking at controversial religious or political topics. You've said several times so far that toggling OOC off is the same as leaving the community, and since you like non-fallacious argument so much, give us a non-fallacious argument for that.

  13. Yep, I'm after yet another AI-related feature... 'cause, you know, that's how I roll. In this case, though, it's an RP thing not a mechanics thing. PAIs get an IC page with details about them, IPCs/organics get three different IC background pages... it'd be nice if droids and AIs had a similar feature as well (probably accessible to command and robotics staff, as well as fellow synthetics). It could help to create RP much the same way that the normal character records do, as well as giving people tasked with handling the synthetic crew a bit more information about what to expect from any given unit. For implementation I'd suggest replacing the box that pops up asking you to name your droid/AI with one that has room for a name as well as a block of text about the unit. An option to save the profile and have it automatically loaded next time you play as an AI/droid would be useful as well, much the same way as you can save your PAI profile. For accessing... a synthetic crew manifest could be added to appropriate PDA modules, though a terminal on the bridge, robotics bay, and RDs office could also work.

  15. This is all lovely, but being a "shitlord" in OOC is both already against the rules and not actually the topic of this thread. What's being suggested here isn't banning OOC shitlordism, it's banning civil discussion of certain topics on the theory that such discussion may offend some people. And while I've yet to see anyone come fourth and say "I'm offended by any mention of religion or politics" in this thread, several people have expressed their distaste for censorship of such topics. This is not, of course, an issue of freedom of speech, but rather what is best for our community. And the views of people who are offended by an unnecessary increase in censorship are no less valid than the views of those who are offended by the mere mention of religion or politics. I certainly find unnecessary censorship to be stifling and just plain offensive... not to mention disruptive to interesting or amusing discussions in what is ostensibly a mature gaming community. And being unable to handle exposure to a civil discussion of controversial topics is no less immature than ranting and screaming in OOC. So, please, lets not let a few bad apples ruin it for the rest of us.

  17. Yes please! Just make sure the barber's shop is close to the kitchen for easy access to the gibber. XD
  18. By your phrasing I'm inferring you're referring to discussions which get heated or argumentative, which I'll happily agree has no place in OOC if for no other reason than that it's distracting from the game. I was actually asking about whether people also get upset by civil discussions of religion and politics. I'm sorry for any confusion.
  19. Do we know that people are actually getting their feelings hurt in this manner, or is this purely hypothetical? Because it seems a shame to censor certain topics simply because of a problem that may not even exist. Further, when one thinks about it, there are a wide variety of topics which could be banned because someone might at some point be distressed by them. Ones that come to mind include: economics, celebrity gossip, conspiracy theories, mental illness, spoilers, certain "sensitive" scientific topics like stem cell research or animal testing, the existence of people with non-hetro sexual orientations... I could go on, but I think you get my point. Wouldn't it be better, then, to treat players like reasonably mature people who can survive the occasional non-vitriolic discussion of something they find uncomfortable without having to ruin it for everyone else?
  20. I like some parts of this idea... namely, having a criminal on the station who is approved to be an antag but is supposed to blend with the crew rather than start shit. Trying to be a criminal mastermind would probably be too complicated for a 2-4 hour round, but what about a criminal on the run. Like, not long after the round starts (not really sure if this should be a round type or a job or what) and centcom gets a message saying that a murder occurred and the guilty party is suspected of boarding a shuttle to NSS Aurora, along with a partial description and information on the murder weapon. And just for a bonus, the murderer has a murder weapon on them (perhaps a revolver with a few rounds of ammo, or a knife, or the likes) which could either be used as a weapon or used to identify the person. This would, ideally, create something for security to do besides wait around for someone to break station regs, while simultaneously having an antag who's supposed to be hiding rather than, like, doing bad shit. If done as a round-type, it'd also make a nice alternative to extended for people who like more RP-oriented rounds but still want at least some stuff to happen.
  21. Herd mentality? So, what, we change our votes to try to fit in? Not hardly. The reason people change their votes is better described as a form of non-verbal consensus building. Does it result in compromise? Yeah, that's sorta the nature of consensus building, but it also results in the selected option being at least somewhat palatable to the majority of the people who voted. Removing either the ability to view the votes in progress or change your vote would, instead, result in voting strategies which are more likely to lead to a mode being selected that a large minority want but the majority don't (I'm talking about nuke or extended, which are the most-voted-for options after secret), as well as making voting for more obscure options the equivalent of wasting your vote. If you want a more detailed explanation of why this sort of voting system is bad, google "first past the post". You'll find nice, easily followed explanations with animations and everything. Other than that, I suggest reading a little less about psychology and a little more about game theory, as our voting system is a pretty good example of game theory in action.
  22. I hadn't thought about that... however if the message only triggers on PA power level changes, not when the PA is turned on and off, then it wouldn't stop antags from shutting down the singularity.
  23. Pretty simple: Any time the PA power level changes, send a nice red (or at least somehow colored) message to the AI. This shouldn't interfere with antagging since antags rarely release the singularity (and there are other ways to do it without turning up the PA), but should help prevent one of the more serious forms of griefing.
  24. I should point out that ICly, positronic brains are both expensive and very finicky... and borgs require someone who'd rather be borged than cloned. Robots, requiring neither, could very well be far less expensive and difficult to build, even if they have to be returned to the factory for maintenance.
  25. I can't think of any chuckelfuckery I want to engage in... none at all! I feel sad now.
