  1. In science if it's understaffed then there is no access to whole chunks of the department, just gotta play with how the cards are dealt. Scientists are a lot like doctors in that they have the most access in their departments (with the exception of the Heads), nurses are like lab assistants in that they should follow the department hierarchy. They shouldn't have all access even if it does mean that everyone on the station could be kept alive by some Super Nurse. If you want to actually save people from extreme health conditions then be a simply be a doctor like Senpai Jackboot's 1st possibility. Nurses shouldn't do more cloning and less post-cloning care, that's pretty much the exact opposite of what a nurse is. They are clinical carers not clonepod technicians. A nurse would do CPR, bandage wounds and give medications only as prescribed (only certain trained or senior nurses have the power to prescribe even in emergency situations), and provide most medical care assistance to patient recovery but they can't and shouldn't do surgery not even minor surgery. Surgery is most definitely a complicated subject and nurses would never be allowed to perform, nurses should just care for the patient until a surgeon comes along or the patient dies, like Jackboot's 2nd possibility, provide the patient beds, wheelchairs and painkillers, dress wounds etc. Palliative care is a major subject in nursing and would be advisable to read into if you want to RP a nurse instead of an actual doctor. Keep the patient comfortable and clean. Keep nurses out of cloning and surgery. Nurses know how to wash their hands as well as keep the place clean and hygienic, not develop, isolate and mass-produce an antibody to stop a superbug. A normal doctor might, many historically have IRL. So if you want to be a carer be a nurse, if you want to be a curer be a doctor. I've got a lot of respect for nurses so don't get me wrong, they can actually be an integral part of the medical department while lab assistants will usually be the downfall of any good science department. If there's no chemist, first place you should ask is also Science to see if there's any chemistry nerds. Scientists would have developed the medications and all the medtech in the first place, some may even be contracted by pharmaceutical companies like Zeng-Hu, and the main thing is they have their own ChemDispenser in the Materials lab! They have more "free time" on their hands since they're not caring for the constant influx of dead and dieing patients, and I'm sure the monkeys they were gonna torture would appreciate it. They also have a few different suppliers for phoron such as kois, miners and slimes for making the more complex medications. Even doctors should generally check with Science if there isn't a chemist, synthesizing the medication is far too time consuming and they're on the clock most of the time so radio or PDAM that requests over rather than pestering the AI or HoP to get chem access! A nurse making peridaxon while folks are critting in reception is actually the worst and the makings of a really bad nurse because they're not just neglecting their patients but also the rest of the crew on the station at their disposal. Trust the nerd that brings the meds, if they mislabelled or fucked up anything it'll go back on them and not the nurse that dispensed them - pretty sure if a nurse told security that some nerd gave them a load of drugs and mutagen saying it was tricord and dexalin, that nerd would be harmbatoned all the way to solitary or at least point the rage of any poisoned survivors to science. Science and medicine should work together more. If there is a dire need for a surgeon and nobody to supply peridaxon then a xenobiologist might be your second best bet especially if it's surgery on another species than human, give them a PDAM and see if they're up for performing it. Ok, maybe getting a xenobiologist is a bit of a stretch kinda like getting a veterinary to remove an appendix but they would have the more advanced knowledge of anatomy needed for surgery and a xenobiologist doesn't become a xenobiologist by just studying slimes and must have a sound understanding of the complex physiological systems that make up any organism. Just tell the patient that you're calling in a specialist, there'll be other patients to see to instead of wasting a nurse's time actually performing the surgery. They'll also have the time to open a wiki and grab a laser scalpel on the way from sub-research so they have an idea of how to do it. Work on bedside mannerisms, chat to the patients when they're stabilized and find out what happened to them and not just what damage they sustained. The body scanner won't tell you who the patient is or what fucked up situation they found themselves in to end up on the roller bed will it? Leave the god complexes to the doctors and scientists where it is pretty much a requirement*! *or Jackboot's possibility 3 and take over as acting head but unfortunately time will never be on your side if you try and do everything, and generally if you're understaffed enough to take over then you won't have the staff to effectively delegate.
  2. R&D is generally a chore, this guide is great as it could really help more folks start to do it and so it frees up more time for fun science projects such as all the different ways to horrifically maim monkeys and possibly even how to heal them again. I learnt how to do R&D from playing on Yogstation where the interface is different but it's pretty much the same scheme of things. If every scientist could just learn from this guide how to get atleast levels 5's and 3 for phoron, that be great, mmkay. I'd expect it from other scientists and I'd expect assistants to atleast get everything up to atleast 2's and 3's, 4's if they're good. Maybe being optimistic there, if assistants just threw in a micromanip (the one that's always right next to the destructive analyzer) and scanning mod then filled the machines with metal, glass and acid, I'd be happy. A note worth making if I've missed someone already say before (sorry if I have) is that the hemostat from the autolathe or autopsy could be used for biotech 1 instead of another PANDEMIC board. I think I was told in-game by LiLITH to use the hemostat cause every little bit of efficiency can count before tables start getting disassembled because miners never turned up or robotics has taken all the metal for an army of Ripleys. The Research lab itself needs more than just the levels put up, it needs organized at the start of every round; hand labeller and wrapping paper are usually randomly scattered so they can go near the front desk, all the obsolete stock parts can be thrown in the autolathe before filling them, and a large beaker could be made for the sulphuric acid (don't forget nice purple comfy seat upgrades). The Materials lab can do with a rack for beakers next to the Chem Dispenser and a closet next to disposals for storage and safety, move that vials into the corner with the dropper so ya got a clear workspace, don't leave beakers in the machines and always put on lids. So many folks have no manners when using the Materials lab. Number one rule in research is if shit goes down, prolly hide in a locker so having one in Materials may save your life. Scientists should think of projects to keep them otherwise busy when research is done, constantly testing and questioning everything. Design different tests and test different designs! Set shift goals in the form of questions; what if? can I? can it? how much? how can? where is? what is? Always think of a product, paper or possibility to come out of it; even safety testing phoron furniture could be a fun shift goal with so many different ways to play it out. Then again, could always be a boring bureaucrat or lab safety inspector type and just shit on everything but by the time the shift is over, a scientist should generally have learnt something or done something that makes them and others think, wow that was cool or interesting and not have just spent it all getting to levels X,Y,Z..., I'm sure a lot of good shifts have been had with just these 5's and a couple 6's with a 2 for phoron while no research has made some shitty shifts even shittier to many. The R&D process is, as I and many have said, a chore that becomes repetitive if no one else knows how but ingame I've chalked it up to a "leave no research behind" policy to protect corporate secrets, which explains why it's always a mess of nothing of value in the lab but behind some sort of an enabling technology research passcode read by the destructive analyzer, you can get access to the juiciest of Nanotassen tech. If there was ever an implementation of persistent bank accounts and work-related payments, I think there should be royalty bonuses for unlocking research levels (also want to see it go beyond to femto-scale manipulators but that's also a different matter) then I bet more folks would be learning this this guide.
  3. Excellent, I've only seen farwa but thought they were Tajaran (Will always believe Ian is actually an evolutionary cousin of Tajarans though). So how do ya think of xenogenetics otherwise for bulking up the genome? I think it may be an easier system to implement on top of the pre-existing and could then be updated with increasing functionality. What would your thoughts be on species hybrids? On another note bloodtype could also be added with blocks for A antigen, B antigen and Rhesus factor, with neither A or B active is O. It should just be the one ABO gene but it may be easier with the 2 unless we divide the hex limit by 3 on the 1 and assign accordingly. As for a new genetic "superpowers", there could be a new D bloodtype like a galactic donor type which anyone (or thing) is compatible with or the reverse, T bloodtype which is more toxic as far as incompatibility damage goes to anyone else.
  4. Richter isn't a fascist with a harmbaton and belt of flashbangs, they're approachable and good banter to non-security staff as far as I've seen so +1. Though I don't know what they're like in their department, only from just going about the station and I've seen them handle some situations quite well.
  5. Haha yeah, RIP cabbage patch kids! What I mean is ya need someone to play as the mushroom for it to spread but I'll have to get into plant genetics more, walkin reesh is the goal!
  6. I think I know what round this was, didn't take any screenshots but it was hilarious! I've since tried farming walkin shrooms but without sentience, they ain't gonna spread like crazy. Will have to start takin pics more often in the future though.
  7. As they say, Prof Winters get's more than Cap'n Kirk. He's the OG of Science. ASSIST is definitely one of the hardest workin' bots and always a hoot. +1
  8. Type (e.g. Planet, Faction, System): Xenobiological Theory Founding/Settlement Date (if applicable): - Region of Space: All Controlled by (if not a faction): - Other Snapshot information: This is a collection of deeplore for xenobiologists as to the origin of slimes and life, heavily inspired by molecular biology. It also leads on to the possible future of Xenogenetics and progression away from the Human-centric paradigm of Nanotrassen. Long Description:
  9. I've been working on the idea of Xenogenetics, which could be quite a simple system but would add a great many blocks and slow down would-be hulkists while adding a great deal of freedom to any aspiring geneticist. That is instead of the species block we introduce a block for Ribosome and blocks for each Species Polymerase. I've also got an understanding of DM and could start implementing it but want to hear what folks think first. The Ribosome block will designate whether the organism has advanced protein expression, it covers the whole species to protospecies by being on or off respectively. If no species polymerase is on, then they are a slime or slimeperson depending on the ribosome, or if the human polymerase was on then they would be a human or a monkey. As for the protospecies for each race I've taken into account sprites and animals already in the game with an evolutionary link to the lore... I've included slimes because I believe they're like primordial ooze, or atleast the grandchild of after protozoa. They are genetic beings that adapted and evolved to all of the more complex multicellular planetary life. A raw force of evolution! I'm writing a book in game on the origins of slimes and will make a hyperscientific lore application for these theories but slimes should be genetic beings and would help fill in the no-polymerase hole of gene activations. This system would allow anything to be transformed into anything else but before you panic about all the "fake furries", the consciousness should always have a genetic origin. So a transformed organism should be easily distinguished by a natural, they'd lack the language and social customs as well as the finer features that only members of the species or a trained eye would distinguish. Also having multiple polymerases would allow new hybrid species but until that's all properly figured out for all combinations, I'd suggest a genetic abombination sprite to fill in (like the changling monster) and tox damage due to xenoimmune responses waging war against each other. I've only be dossing about with ideas of dominant and recessive species traits but it should be something figured out from everyone who knows each species better.
