Elyra and Tau Ceti Mend Fences, Finalize Border UNITY STATION (GST) - In a seeming effort to turn a new page following tensions and minor skirmishes over the “Orchard Moon” corporate mining site, the Republic of Elyra and Republic of Tau Ceti have signed an agreement which cedes control of critical Valley Hale regions to Tau Ceti in return for increased security cooperation between Uthma and Mendell City. With the border zones having been the site of multiple violent skirmishes between Elyran and Tau Cetite forces, and home to several productive mining operations, economists have stated the agreement brings a degree of stability to a region plagued by tension since 2462. Some, however, have called the gesture a predatory one by Tau Ceti, which has long held interest in establishing sole control over the regions formerly disputed by Elyra. With the Republic of Elyra weakened by internal strife and a declining interstellar phoronics market, Tau Ceti likely has aims beyond regional security in its treaty with Elyra. Domestically, the Republic of Elyra has faced severe civil strife since its expansion of the draft to all residents, including noncitizens, residing within its borders, which has led to an exodus of many foreign nationals not holding “Non-Citizen Person” worker status. Foreign reactions to the act’s passage have been mixed, with the Xanan ambassador to Unity Station advising the Xanan Republic is, “disappointed,” Elyra has not moved to address increasing piracy in the southern Spur. Tau Cetite politicians have been more supportive of the gesture, calling it a, “step towards a more peaceful Spur.” Further Reading: Neither Citizen, Nor Person: Inside the World of Elyran Citizenship and Immigration Upcoming Coalition Memoir of Solarian Civil War a Most-Anticipated Book of 2468 A Royal Welcome: Dominian Heir Reportedly Considering Solarian Tour

Increasing Tensions Renew Calls for Frontier Protection Bureau Expansion NOUVELLE-ROCHELLE, XANU (GST) - With the Elyran and Dominian navies now focused on protecting their respective colonies in the Badlands-Sparring Sea Region, some voices within the Coalition have called on its member states to increase funding to an agency thought neglected by many: the Frontier Protection Bureau, or FBP. Established by the Coalition as an anti-piracy and security force for members lacking the resources to fund an inter-system navy, the FBP is most known for its Rangers. Equipped and funded by the Coalition’s members, the Rangers are known for their daring and heroism. However, many ex-Rangers have criticized the Coalition for making them, “do far more with far less.” The most prominent of these critics has been former Ranger and current IXP Representative Philippe Durant, who represents the Bamdha District of Pataliputra and has long been an advocate for a stronger FBP. Representative Durant has been particularly critical of President Afzal’s government, which he states is neglecting, “a key ally in the war against drug pushers on Xanan streets,” by not increasing funding to the FBP. Xanans remain divided on the issue of FBP funding increases, with general public support for the Rangers (71%) not translating into support for funding hikes (47%). More respondents from the All-Xanu Republic believe it either pays enough (37%) or more than enough (25%) then not paying enough (35%) or paying significantly less than enough (12%), with the remainder being undecided. Alliance, Empire Sign Mutual Naval Cooperation Agreement UNITY STATION (GST) - With instability growing in the southern Spur as the Elyran Republic engages in actions senators have called, “no better than piracy,” against civilian vessels accused of entering its territory, the Alliance of Sovereign Solarian Nations and Empire of Dominia have signed a mutual agreement for naval cooperation in the region. Described as formalizing already established de facto agreements between Southern Command (SOUCOM) and the Imperial Military’s Northern Military Frontier, the treaty — if it passes the Senate — will allow for mutual extradition of pirates between the two countries and is expected to greatly decrease the amount of piracy risk faced by Solarian ships in the region. It will also allow for certain ports and facilities to be used by both militaries. Secretary of Defense Courtois and Chief of Naval Operations von Varnhagen described the treaty as an encouraging step towards stabilizing a tense situation between Moroz and Persepolis in the region, and a step towards a more stable southern Spur under joint Solarian and Dominian naval patrols. SecD Courtois provided the SANN with the following statement: “I believe it cannot be overstated how important further interstellar cooperation is to maintain a peaceful and stable interstellar environment. The actions last month by the Republic of Elyra represent a dangerous escalation of tension in an area we have interests in maintaining peace and stability. We only have to look at the ‘Wasteland’ region to see what happens when governments sit back and do nothing to resolve instability.” The Southern Spur Security Act, or 3SA, is currently undergoing talks in the Senate and a vote is expected to come within the month. Respondents to a SANN poll expressed general approval for the Act, though many respondents expressed concerns about the Dominian government’s lack of freedoms. The desire to stop a war in the region was the highest priority for most respondents, with 63% putting it as their top concern. Navy: Recent Developments in Southern Spur “Concerning” for Regional Security FELLEGVAR, VISEGRAD (GST) - Admiral Monika von Schintling, commander of Southern Command, has issued a statement on recent border tensions between the Empire of Dominia and Republic of Elyra. Describing the recent events as, “a worrying trend of rhetorical and security escalation,” von Schintling advised the military’s forces in the area had moved to a heightened state of readiness as a deterrent against actions, “counter to national interests in the region.” This heightened state of alertness has seen local forces such as the Visegradi National Defense Force call up additional personnel in support of any possible military operations in the Southern Reaches. PM Strom is reported to have suggested the military readiness escalation in response to Elyran actions against civilian starships and the presence of significant Dominian naval assets in the region. An official with the Imperial Fleet, Dominia’s navy, advised the Alliance has, “no reason to be concerned,” about Dominian military operations in the region due to, “our nations’ long history of friendship,” and encouraged security cooperation against Elyran encroachment in the Region. The Elyran Ministry of Defense and War (MDW) did not return the SANN’s request for comment. Solarians in the Southern Reaches expressed general approval to increasing military readiness by Southern Command, with 65% approving of the decision. Support is highest on Sankt Frederick but lower on Visegrad, where Governor/Fleet Admiral Klaudia Szalai has attempted to reassure Visegradis the NDF will not be subordinated to the Navy and disbanded, as it was during the civil war in the region. Fleet Admiral Myo Yunso is reportedly to be a likely candidate for overall command of the Navy’s forces in the area. Republic of Assunzione to Increase Naval Patrols TRIESTO, ASSUNZIONE (GST) - Citing an increasingly unstable situation in the Sparring Sea and Elyran domestic unrest, the Republic of Assunzione has announced its navy will be increasing its presence and number of patrols in the Light’s Edge region to prevent the spread of piracy. President of the Assunzionii Republic Antonello Rosiello has additionally requested the deployment of more Frontier Protection Bureau vessels to the region, and proposed the formation of a joint naval command in the southern Coalition to increase cooperation in anti-piracy actions. As the Republic of Elyra’s attention has shifted towards the Sparring Sea and Empire of Dominia, security gaps have opened up in the region and piracy has increased, particularly since the start of 2466. Rear Admiral Layth Sidi, commander of an anti-piracy task force operated by the Republic of Assunzione Navy, described the situation as comparable to the aftermath of the Interstellar War, and worried it may escalate further unless the Coalition increases its presence in the region. An All-Xanu Spacefleet officer speaking to the XNS on the condition of anonymity described themselves as, “disappointed but unsurprised,” at the increase in piracy in the region, stating, “Elyra has always been more interested in fighting with the Imperials than cooperating with its neighbors.” Xanan and Solarian insurance companies have reported a sharp increase in the number of claims made for piracy-related damages, with Lloyd’s Interstellar Register listing it as one of the top claim categories alongside interstellar collisions and fires. Phoron Supertanker Missing, Presumed Lost - Dominian Privateers Likely Responsible UTHMA, PERSEPOLIS (GST) - The Ministry of Phoron Management has confirmed the ERCSS Ghawar, a New Suez-originating phoron supertanker last seen on Saturday, as missing and presumed lost in or near the southern Coalition. The MPM has confirmed the vessel was operating on known warp networks on a routine Suezi-Xanan-Biesellite route known to be patrolled by naval vessels, and had recently departed New Suez with a full load. The Ministry of Defense and Warfare described all routes used by the Ghawar as, “extremely secure against attack by anything not part of a military-strength force.” The MDW has pointed a finger at the nearby Empire of Dominia and its privateering fleets, citing the recent movement of two major Morozian naval forces into the Sparring Sea and Badlands as a pretext to the attack. Blame has also been cast on noncitizen members of the crew, as the Ghawar’s crew register had several noncitizen members per a crew logbook shared with the ENN. The Empire’s foreign office has described the accusations as, “baseless,” while aligning itself with major pirate factions such as the “Goddess’ Flotilla” known to operate across the southern Spur. Elyran Navy garrisons along the western border have been placed on high alert in anticipation of further Morozian attacks on civilian shipping, and phoron-tipped munitions are being deployed to the garrisons to counter any full-scale attacks by the Empire. The MDW has advised the weapons are to be used in the event an organized Imperial effort is directed at the Sanitary Cordon operated by the navy. The western and northern garrisons are cooperating with Coalition and Biesel forces in a coordinated search for the missing supertanker. Coast Guard: Bulk Carrier Repairs Delayed by Storms, Cold DURRES, NOVI JADRAN (CST) - Coast Guard officials in the Durres district have advised ongoing repairs of the MV Sveta Magdalena, beached in early December, are behind schedule due to the ongoing harsh winter conditions across much of the western Iri delta and coastline. With this December having been one of the coldest in the western Iri delta region since the start of the Imperial Era, the salvage operation may now take until late winter to complete. However, damage to navigation beacons caused by Storm Markovic has been repaired on schedule with the assistance of the Imperial Army’s Pioneer Corps and civilian contractors. Damage reports of the vessel describe its condition as, “moderately damaged,” though likely to be able to withstand the winter and be moved to dry dock when weather lifts. Coast Guard officials have noted the number of damaged beacons is greater than initially estimated and many display signs of, “highly irregular,” damage not generally associated with Sea-Storm damages. With many beacons in the storm’s damage zone falling in territory controlled by a cadet branch of the Brignole family known as the de Castello family, which is responsible for their maintenance per an agreement with the Coast Guard. A source speaking to the Gazette on condition of anonymity advised the beacons were a known problem to the Coast Guard, which was unable to address them due to the family’s prestige, and local mariners, with pilot charts acquired by reporters in Durres noting the western Iri Delta’s northern reaches, near where the Sveta Magdalena grounded, explain navigation beacons may be inoperative, and to avoid the region during Sea-Storms. The seneschal of the de Castello family was contacted by the Gazette but has not responded as of the time of this article’s release. A former river pilot speaking on condition of anonymity reported they were, “not surprised,” at widespread reports of navigation problems in the region as, “every pilot worth their weight knows the Castello’s coastline is hazardous. The only surprise is it took a ship grounding to get the word out.” Captain Ljudevit Horvat of the Royal Durres Shipping Corporation, officer in charge of the Sveta Magdalena during its grounding, is currently working with the Coast Guard to determine a cause of grounding for his vessel, which is likely to return to service in 2469. Suwon Authorities: Traffic Congestion “Top Priority” for Administration SUWON, KONYANG (GST) - As part of an urban planning initiative known as “Suwon 2485” authorities in the Republic of Konyang’s most populated city have announced their intent to address major traffic issues in the metropolis on the heels of Suwon being voted the Coalition’s most congested city for the fourth consecutive year. In second place is Point Verdant (locally known as Aoyama), also found on Konyang. Other most congested cities were found on Xanu and Vysoka, where many rural roads are in a state of neglect. Overcrowding has become a major issue for the world since its economic boom in the early years of this century, with many Konyangers living in small apartments and relying on public transportation systems due to the lack of space for anything aside from K-cars: small vehicles known as “Konyang cars” designed for use in urban areas. Congestion has become a major complaint of tourists, with the Konyang Board of Tourism reporting it as one of their most frequently seen complaints. Eun-ah Lim, spokesperson for the Suwon Board of Supervisors, advised the city, “does not want to leave visitors eager enough to come here after the crisis a bad perception of our city by having them stuck in traffic for hours,” in response to an email by the XNS. The city is reportedly in the, “very early,” stages of planning future infrastructure expansions, but Lim confirmed the municipal government is currently in the process of acquiring land to expand the Syngman Rhee Interstellar Shuttleport, allowing for more flights per day and shorter waiting periods for starliners prior to departure. Other proposals have included land reclamation in the Kaneyama Bay region and acquiring new light rail units from elsewhere in the Coalition, with the Himeo-based ULRAS reportedly a top contender to supply the trains per a source in the municipal government. Diplomatic Relations Severed with Elyran Republic, Fleet Moved to Protect Colonists NOVA LUXEMBOURG, MOROZ (GST) - In a blatant example of typical Elyran disregard for interstellar law and peace, the Elyran Republic has broken diplomatic ties with the Empire in favor of further destabilizing already fragile peace in the Southern Spur. Crown Princess Priscilla Keeser, acting on behalf of His Majesty Boleslaw Keeser, has severed all relations with the Elyran Republic and banished all diplomatic staff from within our borders in return. Deeming Elyra, “a threat to peace in the entire Spur,” in a fiery speech to the Imperial Electors and their cadet house representatives, the crown princess has promised all necessary actions shall be taken to ensure the continued safety and security of Imperial citizens in the Southern Spur. To deter any Elyran aggression against Imperial colonies in the region, Grand Admiral Huiling Zhao has moved the elite 1st and 2nd Battlefleets to the region, with more forces reportedly being summoned to the Caer Sidi System to defend the citizens of the Empire from any aggressors. Abroad, our friends in Unity Station have already taken decisive action against the Elyran Republic in response to crimes against its own citizenry, for which the crown princess has praised Prime Minister Strom in a call to Unity Station. The former ambassador to Elyra, Baron Rüdiger von Sinzendorf, arrived to Nova Luxembourg earlier today via bluespace diplomatic flight and provided the following statement to the INN: “The Republic of Elyra, as a state, has long been a spoiler against the existing interstellar order, and their expulsion of His Majesty’s Diplomatic Service after an incident in which their military was the aggressor beggars belief. In my two-score of service to our Empire I can recall no nation less respectful than the Elyrans: their phoron-based wealth — dredged up by near-slaves they do not grant even the basic niceties of citizenship — has made them complacent and ill-tempered. We can only pray their brutish fools shall not lead the Spur into extinction over some accursed thing in the Southern Spur.” Further Reading: Vice Grand Admiral Xiuling Zhao to Visit Luna as Part of Military Outreach to Alliance CCED Caladius and CCHMIM Volvalaad Authorize Emergency Funding Increase for Military Fortress Wei: Our Shield Against the Eagle

Callisto-Visegrad-Moroz Route Celebrates Two Months of Operation NOVA LUXEMBOURG, MOROZ (GST) - In a conference for investors and business media, Pan Solarian Interstellar CEO Gui Cheng commemorated two months of operation by the new Sol-Dominia route operated by Pan Solarian in late November 2467. Citing the opening of the route as, “a fantastic windfall,” for Pan Solarian, Cheng showed previously internal company data on traveler numbers for the route. While not the top interstellar route for Pan Solarian, which remains Callisto-Xanu, the CVM route has passed Callisto-Visegrad-Persepolis and Callisto-Tau Ceti in travel numbers for the past two months. With tensions growing between the Republic of Elyra and the broader Spur, a Pan Solarian analyst spoken to by SANN reporter Cèline Eylenbosch advised he believes Elyran travel will sharply decline in 2467 and 2468 compared to 2466, where it reached five-year peak. Travel to the Republic of Tau Ceti has similarly declined, with many Solarian travelers describing it as unsafe or wishing to economically boycott the Tau Cetite tourist industry until it ends the occupation of Solarian territory. Morozian investor Jean-Louis de Montagne, employed by a hedge fund affiliated with a major Dominian family known as House Caladius, was interviewed by the SANN and described the CVM route as, “an incredible opportunity to bring Unity Station and Moroz closer together. The Solarian embassy in Nova Luxembourg noted it has processed more tourist visas in the past two months than in all of 2466. Republic of Elyra Hit by Hardest Tariffs of Decade in New Law UNITY STATION, EARTH (GST) - Deadlock over the Nuzheid Act has been resolved by the Senate following a compromise between it and the opposing Sultan Act, which primarily dealt with Elyran economic and political leaders. Under the Nuzheid Act all imports from Elyra are subject to an incense 45% tariff, the highest imposed by the Alliance since a 100% tariff against Biesel was lifted in 2460, and accounts held in the Alliance by prominent Elyran military, economic, and political leaders are to be frozen until further notice. Sen. Pres. Sumida (SFP-LUNA) led the push to pass the Act following news of attacks by Elyran Navy ships on independent vessels. Describing the actions of the Elyrans as, “no better than piracy,” Sumida officially declared the measure as passed. PM Strom is expected to sign the Nuzheid Act into law and there is broad support in the Alliance for retaliation against Elyra following its actions against striking workers last year and the subsequent naval incident in January of this year, with 74% of respondents favoring some level of tariffs, roughly the same level as in December 2468. Some members of the Alliance’s business community have expressed concern about potential phoron price increases in the near future, as a minority of the Alliance’s phoron comes from the Republic of Elyra, and the price of the fuel has only increased since 2462. Survey Ship’s Crew Returns with Shocking Story of Mistreatment by Elyra, Biesel SHANGDI, CAER SIDI SYSTEM (GST) - The surviving crew of the House Volvalaad-operated scientific vessel Zhu Yu, thought missing by many in the Imperial scientific community, returned today to an Imperial Fleet facility with a harrowing tale of murder, mistreatment, and piracy in the Sparring Sea that saw 11 of the vessel’s 15 crew killed in action. The vessel’s captain, one Ayaka Imai of Zhurong, described the incident as, “the worst I have seen or heard of in my four decades as an officer,” and noted it began when the Zhu Yu was forced into an asteroid belt by an Elyran Republic vessel while traveling in independent space. The crew was forced to abandon ship, taking only what they could immediately carry, and were rescued by a passing vessel from the Republic of Biesel, which provided limited medical aid to the survivors. In a flagrant disregard for interstellar law, the Republic of Biesel’s vessel allowed for the Elyran ship to steal the Zhu Yu’s survey data and return it to Persepolis, where it will surely be used to aid Elyran imperialism in the region. In a final act of barbarism the Elyran crew is reported to have desecrated the dead by destroying the stricken vessel with bodies still aboard, leaving the relatives and loved ones of the deceased crew without even a body to mourn. Chief Commissioner of Imperial Sovereignty Antonio Caladius has summoned the Republic of Biesel’s ambassador to Moroz to explain why its vessel refused to aid the Zhu Yu beyond the most basic humanitarian duties. The Solarian ambassador to Moroz has issued an official statement in support of the Zhu Yu and against piracy, calling the phenomenon, “one of the great challenges facing the Southern Spur in this decade.” With its massacres of striking workers a recent memory for many in the Spur, this incident is simply a reminder of the Elyran Republic’s danger to interstellar peace. Department of Justice: Lycoris Met Police Training Goals for 2467 HARMONY CITY, LUNA (GST) - A spokesperson for the Department of Justice has confirmed the newly reformed Lycoris Planetary Police Service has met the goals set out for it by the DOJ nearly three years ago in late 2465. Intended to replace the Lycoris National Police Agency, which was responsible for widespread atrocities during the civil war, officers of the LPPS have been cleared to start patrols of their home planet and are expected to fully take over civilian policing duties from Army and federal police by early 2470. During the transitional period, LPPS officers will work alongside their military and federal counterparts. Attorney General Henri Fontenot described this accomplishment as, “a major step towards ensuring the law and Solarian rights are respected and upheld on Lycoris.” The planet, which has seen an increase in violence since 2466, was a major industrial hub prior to 2462 and some in its business community hope it can recover its pre-secession position as a major world in the Northern Reaches and close counterpart of nearby San Colette. Lycorii interviewed by the LPPS expressed cautious optimism about the police agency, with some viewing it as a step towards self-determination and ending the ongoing military peacekeeping operation on the planet. However, many described feelings of nervousness towards a reformed police service, with an individual who requested they be only identified as Engineer F describing how they had hid from LNPA officers for two years during the civil war after their spouse was discovered to be from Tau Ceti. Engineer F advised they would, “never again trust [Lycorii] police after the civil war.” Further Reading: Massive Sandstorms Throw Tết Travel Plans of Many Haiphongers into Disarray Sen. Iijoki Mine Rescue Completed - Miners Return to Families SEVASCHAIV, VYSOKA (GST) - After two months underground, local authorities in Sevaschaiv have announced the successful recovery of miners trapped in the “Golden Gurmori” shelter. Foreman Ganzorig Baatar, leader of the trapped miners, was the last to be extracted from the shelter via a rescue tunnel where miners were extracted two at a time by United Mineworkers’ Alliance engineers. Initial medical checks note the miners are in good health, but have generally lost weight and are suffering from sunlight sensitivity. They are expected to make full recoveries. Jaakko Honkonen, UMA’s manager for the rescue operations, thanked both the miners, his team, and local authorities for their cooperation during the rescue operation. An investigation into the cause of the explosion in Iijoki Mine is ongoing, and a UMA spokesperson advised the syndicate is, “fully cooperating with relevant authorities,” in the matter. Public opinion about Himeo in Sevaschaiv remains mixed, with 57% of respondents to a XNS survey expressing a belief the UMA had some or all responsibility for the explosion. The UMA has consistently denied any responsibility and stated it uses, “the highest level of mine safety procedures,” in its facilities per Himean law. Investigations into the cause of the accident may take until late 2468 due to the number of witnesses, hazardous nature of the accident site, and interplanetary nature of the incident. The mine is not expected to reopen before 2470, assuming it remains practical to operate. On the Ground on Lycoris The camera opens on a view of the ever-present Harold MacMillan, host of The State of Sol, looking up from his dataslate, placing it down, and nodding resolutely to the camera. “Good evening, and welcome back to The State of Sol. As always I’m your host, Harold MacMillan. Tonight’s headlines include the incoming Jeweler Cup on Konyang, the continued debate on what to do about Elyra following a bloody massacre of striking workers on Aemaq, and reports of increasing terrorist violence on Lycoris. We go now to our reporter on Lycoris, Le Quyen Cong. Le?” The camera switches to a nervous-looking Cong, a bespectacled Hai Phongese reporter for the SANN. She has swapped out her typical jacket and respirator for a blue bulletproof vest-and-helmet combination with “PRESS” written on the front. Behind her is what will be recognizable to any Solarian veteran as a forward operating base of the Solarian Army, complete with camouflage tarps and sand-filled barrier blocks. Quyen nods to the camera. “I can, Harold.” “Where are you, and what’s the situation like?” “It’s tense, but safe here in Forward Operating Base Howe, Harold. I’m, ah, embedded with soldiers of the 164th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, from Earth, who have been responsible for peacekeeping operations in this region. Earlier I spoke with Colonel Richard Carlson, commander of the 164th, who advised the situation here is very dynamic.” The feed cuts to a recording of Cong and Colonel Carlson, who is speaking to the reporter. Carlson is an older man with a well-kept, short haircut. He’s taken the time to pin his sleeves at the elbows and has a bit of scruff on his face — it seems he’s been busy lately. “We can’t deny there’s been an increase in insurgent activity in this region, Miss Cong.” “Why do you think that is?” “Insurgencies are dynamic systems, ma'am,” Carlson seems to be a bit irritated at having to explain this. “They can fluctuate from year to year, season to season, and the ideological foundation of this one is strong. It’s not easy to come in as a ‘foreign’ power and change minds. It's not going to happen overnight, like that,” the Colonel snaps his fingers! "We might end up staying here for a long time. Years." The camera switches back to Cong in the FOB behind her, further back in the fortifications, a large transport helicopter touches down in a shower of dust: this seems to be a fairly hot and dry region of the planet. Some form of noise cancellation on her microphone renders the helicopter barely audible instead of deafening. “As you can see Harold,” Cong turns and points over at the helicopter, “this area is very busy, and troops seem to be enthusiastic about their chances of taking the fight to the Front’s remnants. But with terror attacks increasing in cities some are worried the conflict may be shifting into a more urban phase, placing more Solarians at risk. Back over to you, Harold.” The camera switches back to MacMillan in his office, now wearing a dour expression. He nods to the camera. “That was Le Quyen Cong, reporting from Lycoris. The State of Sol will be right back with reporting on the ongoing efforts to censure Elyra, so stay tuned!” MacMillan points his pen at the viewer as the camera zooms out and fades into a commercial break.

Viceroyalty: Winter Brings Increased Flooding to Sun Reach SUN REACH CITY, SUN REACH (GST) - With this summer one of the Viceroyalty’s wettest on record, colonial officials in Sun Reach had hoped the winter would bring lower rain levels to the planet’s famously swampy terrain. However, the winter season has brought no sign of relief from the ongoing rains. Increased flooding has been reported in some outlying provinces and in the capital city itself, with multiple unpaved streets having been transformed into muddy quagmires. Viceroy-General Strelitz has declared a planetary state of crisis and Imperial Army pioneers are working to restore the capital to working order. Yearly Helium-3 production levels are expected to not meet their target if this weather continues, and House Caladius has called on the Imperial Army to send more engineering personnel to resolve the crisis. News from the outlying provinces suggests many aquaculture regions have had their crops ruined by flooding. Food aid from the broader Empire is expected to be dispatched if a risk of famine is deemed likely. The floods represent a significant blow to the Viceroyalty’s infrastructure across Sun Reach, with elevated roads and rail lines having been damaged by debris and water. Engineers from the Imperial Engineering & Shipbuilding Conglomerate, which currently holds the contract for Sun Reach’s rural infrastructure, estimate the damage may take a year or more to repair, with some remote areas having suffered from near total infrastructure collapse. Viceroyalty officials have blamed the flooding on the intense rains and prior neglect by the Pirate Lord government. Meteorological experts believe the rains may continue for some time, noting rain has decreased in prior winter seasons. Reachers have begun to refer to the phenomenon as “witch-rain” and some claim it is punishment for their past misdeeds. Citizens impacted by the flooding are advised to report losses to their nearest public official, and colonial authorities are expected to provide assistance to those impacted. Sea Bandits Keelhaul Visiting Solarian Team in Blowout 10-2 Pre-Season Game SUWON, KONYANG (GST) - The Suwon Sea Bandits (organic league) have beaten the Nueva Isabela Veteranos in a crushing 10-2 blowout win, making one of the first post-Rampancy Crisis games a major victory for Konyanger sports fans as the planet looks towards the 2468 Konyang Series in fall. With the Sea Bandits having won the 2466 and 2467 Jeweler Cup, many analysts are holding this victory over a Solarian team widely regarded as one of the best in the Northern Reaches as a sign the trophy may remain in Suwon for another year in 2468. Sea Bandits team captain Kwang-Sun Nae, at a conference after the game, thanked his “swabbies” for a good performance on the field and promised the team’s fans their “booty” would not be plundered next season, suggesting Nae is confident in his team’s ability to hold onto the Jeweler Cup. In the synthetic league the Sea Bandits won a close 4-3 game over the Ushishir Yōkai which team captain Iseul-52 called a “warmup” for the Konyang Series. With the XNS to provide live Freespeak commentary for the entire Konyang Series, officials in the Konyanger Major League hope this season’s viewership will exceed pre-Rampancy Crisis levels and help revitalize the tourist industry of Konyang’s major cities, most of which have seen a drop in tourism since 2465-66. The KML is currently in negotiations with Solarian and Biesellite coverage for the 2468 Jeweler Cup, but has declined to air this series in Elyra due to recent events on the Elyran world of Aemaq, where the government is accused of having massacred striking workers. INN EXCLUSIVE: The Solarian Ambassador to Moroz Speaks NEW LUXEMBOURG, MOROZ (GST) - In an exclusive interview with the INN’s Josephine Maria Caladius, Lady Ambassador Ulrike de Esterházy von Galántha of the Solarian Alliance graciously accepted an interview invitation. Below is a summarized version of the ambassador’s remarks to the INN. Lady Ambassador von Galántha’s reign has seen a relationship between the Empire and Alliance continue after years of neglect by the illegitimate government of Michael Frost, who usurped power in 2461. The interview was conducted in High Morozi and has been translated to Vulgar by the INN. An uncut version of the interview is available here to INN listeners. Attached to this is a photo of Josephine Maria and von Galántha sitting in two recliners (antiques made in the early Imperial style, likely dating to the integration of Novi Jadran, if one is familiar with the Empire) opposite one another. Josephine Maria is ever the representative of the high nobility: she is elegantly clad in red, white, and black tones with some purple highlights to show her house, and her blonde hair is as elegant as ever. Across from her is Ambassador von Galántha: a pale-skinned middle-aged woman with dark hair and wire-rimmed glasses over her blue eyes. The ambassador looks severe, even cold, and would not be out of place in a photo lineup of Imperial Army officers. Her dark pantsuit (with Solarian/Lunarian flag pin) contrasts the bright colors of Josephine Maria. J.M. Caladius: Ambassador, thank you for taking the time to speak with the INN. U.E. von Galántha: Of course, Countess Caladius. I am grateful to the people of the Empire for the gratitude and hospitality they have shown our diplomatic mission. JMC: Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself? UEvG: I am from Luna, Earth’s moon? And am a member of House Esterházy von Galántha. Unlike in the Empire, my titles are ceremonial — the only land my family owns from our old holdings is a small estate on Earth. I joined the Foreign Service shortly after finishing my doctoral studies and previously served as chargée d’affaires [chief of mission] to the All-Xanu Republic from 2460 until 2466, where I mostly focused on trans-stellar business and legal concerns, such as the aftermath of the civil war’s onset. JMC: That’s quite a long tenure! How did Frost’s rise to power impact your duties? UEvG: One of the first actions by Frost’s administration was to reorient the Alliance’s foreign relations. The ambassador to Xanu was relieved of his position in 2460 and I, as a ranking foreign service officer, was told to fill in for him while Frost found a replacement. Due to the chaotic political environment this replacement never materialized and I became en pied by 2463. I stepped down in 2466 when Prime Minister Strom appointed a new ambassador to Xanu. JMC: Did your appointment to the Empire come as a surprise? UEvG: No. I have a high degree of proficiency with High and Vulgar Morozi and my doctoral thesis covered early Solarian-Imperial history. I am known as a subject matter expert on the Empire within the Department. Additionally, my heritage — ceremonial though it may be — helps orient our mission within the Empire’s society. Military: Terrorist Activity on Lycoris “Worryingly” Increased During 2467 UNITY STATION (GST) - The Army’s peacekeeping mission on Lycoris has reported an increase in terroristic activity from December 2466 to December 2467, though certain types of attacks have decreased. Solarian Army casualties were lower in 2467 than 2466 but casualties among Lycorii civilians have increased. Analysts believe this suggests a shift in the Restoration Front’s (RF) tactics from opposing the government to making their presence intolerable for normal civilians. Further information suggests the RF may have split internally, with a group calling itself the “New Restoration Movement” having claimed responsibility for some of the bloodiest attacks against civilians this year, such as the July subway bombings that killed 56 and injured 189, none military personnel. General Patrick Edwards, commander of all forces in the Northern Reaches, described the attacks as, “cowardly,” and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. General Edwards advised the military has increased patrols of urban areas and increased security measures around major infrastructure. Training of the new Lycoris Planetary Police Service, intended to replace disbanded groups affiliated with the RF, has been accelerated and officers of the LPPS are expected to be patrolling by early 2468, according to the Department of Justice. The New Restoration Front has claimed it represents, “a clean break,” with the ideology of former PM Michael Frost, and only began its terror campaign after the, “betrayal,” of opening relations with Biesel by the Strom government. The Department of Justice has considered the NRF a terrorist group since the July bombings and there is an award for providing information related to the arrest of any members. Bulk Carrier Grounds in Western Iri Delta During Storm DURRES, NOVI JADRAN (CST) - Jadranic Coast Guard officials and local residents have reported the grounding of the Nuovo Vicenza-flagged cargo vessel MV Sveta Magdalena along the Durres coastline in an intense winter sea-storm, Storm Markovic. The Storm was of a type known as a “westerly howler” in many local coastal communities, and visibility is reported to have been very poor along the coast. The Sveta Magdalena is reported to have struck a rock along the coast known as the Goddess’ Fingers and been deliberately grounded by its captain to save its cargo and crew. Captain Ljudevit Horvat, an Imperial Fleet veteran and twenty-year employee of the Royal Durres Shipping Corporation — the operators of the Sveta Magdalena — has been praised by the Coast Guard and the burgomeister of Durres for his quick thinking and efforts to save his crew, all of whom are confirmed to have survived the grounding. However, according to the Coast Guard, he is to be removed from active command until a full review of the incident can be made. Citizens of Durres are reportedly planning to petition the governor to have Captain Horvat cleared of any wrongdoing due to his actions saving his crew. Authorities have advised caution, and that the captain will continue to receive regular pay during his furlough. Local engineers have conducted preliminary work on the ship and believe it may be able to be refloated. Prospective estimates believe the vessel can be moved to a drydock before the end of winter, where further repairs will be carried out. Shipbuilding firms in Durres are expected to compete for the project due to the ship’s fame and its origin in the city’s dockyards. Further Reading: Who is Lady Ulrike de Esterházy von Galántha? United Syndicates Condemns Solarian-Dominian Joint Military Venture: “Naked Imperialism” RAUTAKAIVOS KAUPUNKI, HIMEO (GST) - The government of the United Syndicates of Himeo has officially condemned a Solarian Alliance military modernization program aimed at the Empire of Dominia’s navy, describing it as a blatant attempt to destabilize the Southern Spur and destroy Coalition trade with the Republic of Elyra in the region. First Speaker Marja-Leena Helminen, in a speech to assembled United Himean Workers’ Party delegates and members stated the move was, “yet another example of our neighbors toying with autocracy,” and introduced an official motion to condemn the Alliance. Attached is a short video of the First Speaker herself in front of a crowd. In contrast to the suits and dresses of most politicians, Helminen is clad in a relatively simple dress shirt and pants -- with no tie -- combination that wouldn’t look out of place on a middle-class Xanan or Konyanger office drone. Breaking this up is a canvas jacket bearing the UHWP logo on its breast and reflective strips around the cuffs. She has no lectern, no podium, and stands at roughly the same level as the crowd: a symbolic and literal expression of the United Syndicates’ ideal of equality among all. Most of the crowd are dressed similarly, with some still being covered in dirt and dust from the mine work that defines so much of life on Himeo. “Make no mistake, my members and syndicalists!” Helminen yells, gesturing expressively with her hands! “This is an effort by the Alliance — long an enemy of our Coalition, and of workers everywhere! — to militarize a dictatorial, theocratic power where you or I would have to scrape — would have to BEG — for a fraction of the rights we enjoy on Himeo!” The crowd boos! “Xanu and the corporates in Biesel have told us — time and time again! — the Alliance has changed, that it is no longer the imperialist dictatorship it once was. That it was now a democracy, just like us,” she pauses for a moment. “And I’m sure we can all agree that Biesel is a democracy just like us, even if President Trasen is unelected.” The assembled crowd laughs and chuckles, with a few throwing insults at President Miranda Trasen with great élan. “But you and I, from the guys on the refining lines to our delegates representing workers across our syndicates, know what this is. What this really is: naked imperialism, and a threat to workers across the Southern Spur and beyond!” The room erupts into cheering! Somewhere in the front, a woman takes off her Planetary Guard uniform cap and begins waving it in the air. “As our ancestors fought for our rights as workers and syndicalists!” Helminen does not need a gesture to quiet the crowd, which goes silent at the sound of her voice. “So too will we fight for the future of our Spur, for the workers’ Spur! And we will never — NEVER! — surrender to tyranny, whether that be Galatea’s dictatorship of the technocrats, Biesel’s corporatist regime, or capitalist imperialism!” The First Speaker throws her hand into the air and yells to the crowd, “FOR WE SHALL OVERCOME!” The crowd roars back, “ALL ADVERSITY!” Further Reading: All-Xanu Armed Forces “Concerned” by Increase in Moroz-Earth Military Cooperation President Afzal Prepares for Holiday Season, Meets Students in Nouvelle-Rochelle Xanan Film Studios Reportedly Debating Film on Missing Tourist’s Survival
