Mostly interact with Tsisana. RP is good, easy to drive interaction with. Attitude is good. Nothing but the usual nervousness of playing Command on your trial. I'd be surprised if this went badly. +1

[Denied] William Murdoch - Moderator Application
Sputnik5927 replied to CatsinHD's topic in Moderator Applications Archives
CatsinHD is an absolute positive for the community. They're invested in their characters and it shows - Aisha Hrakra, who I especially like, is a great addition to any RP scene. Their OOC behaviour is very good, never looking for trouble and, in my opinion, having the right attitude when it comes to topics of HRP dynamics and how characters should interact with each other. They'll make a great addition to the moderator team and I look forward to possibly working with them in the future. +1 from Sputnik. -
Byond Account: Sputnik5927 Character Name(s): Only the active ones. Wolf Arges, Security Officer Vladimir Khoromov, Merchant TAKMAN, Security Officer Harald Brytforda, Head of Security Martin Walker, Captain Tazan Mauli, Security Officer AI Name(s): None currently. Discord username + tag: Sputnik#3401 Age: 18 Timezone: GMT+2 When are you on Aurora?: It varies day-by-day and depending on population. I guess I most often play in the morning and in the evening. I do leave Aurora on in the background a lot, waiting for a new round or for the manifest to fill up or empty. Experience How long have you played SS13?: Not sure. I think I've been playing SS13 for four or five years, on and off. How long have you played on Aurora: I joined early August of 2022. How much do you know about SS13 (Baystation build) game mechanics?: Because this question is a little vague, I'm going to assume this is referring to variables, item functions, etc. I think I know those pretty well. Referring to Department mechanics, I know how they work and/or I know how to help myself. Do you have any experience moderating for an SS13 server?: Yes. I have hosted and moderated my own SS13 servers. Have you read through the criteria thread; https://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4198 - and believe that you mark off all the criteria?: Yes. Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: No. Personality Why do you play SS13?: I was initially drawn to SS13 by stories of crazy devices, experiments, stories and the idea of being a character in a huge sci-fi space setting. Once I figured out the controls and UI, I was hooked. The detail and systems of SS13 are awesome, especially the way that NPCs work, the way that organs actually work, the devices you can create and the physics simulation. This game was made for me. Why do you play on Aurora?: I am a big fan of the "workplace" setting of Aurora, as well as the general personable atmosphere. I can actually talk to people and develop some real characters that matter, with rounds that tie together in a canon that everyone can influence. I never got that on other HRP servers. What do moderators do?: Moderators answer to ahelps, moderate the flow of events and make sure that everybody's having fun and following the rules. See the next two questions for poetry. What does it mean to be a moderator for our server?: It's volunteer work, for sure. It's not "fun" to have to deal with certain issues or to have to face constant scrutiny, criticism and maybe hostility from others. Sometimes, you have to stick your neck out to protect someone or insist on a ruling that might be uncomfortable for you in the long term. But that's not what you become a moderator for. You become a moderator because you think you know how to show new players the ropes, just as you had to and to resolve conflicts between community members that would otherwise become serious problems. To be a trusted individual for community members and, in the small view, to just keep a round steady - or get it back on track... Why do you want to be a moderator?: I have found myself seriously invested into this server and community. I have seen the good and certainly the bad. I want to be a part of the project and uphold the standards and mutual respect between members that should be expected on a high quality HRP server. I also think that I can help people get back in the saddle should there be problems of some kind, especially when it comes to OOC conflict or HRP questions. What qualities do you possess that would make you a good moderator?: I am an experienced Server Owner that has managed communities for years. I can look at myself and situations from a third-person perspective and see what the best approach is. I don't provoke, I don't incite and I don't stir up huge drama over small things. This is not to say I let people walk all over me. My experience as a server host gave me a good eye for this. I understand that this is still a game and we are all here to entertain each other - some things need to be taken less seriously and others more. How well do you handle stress, anger, or insults?: I can detach myself from this kind of thing very well, especially when I'm "on-duty" as a moderator. It's my job to handle it and still be able to interact with the members in question afterwards. I understand anger, insults, etc. very well and over my time of Admining I've come to be able to be professional in those kind of situations. I have no problem controlling myself and I don't have outbursts that would pose some kind of risk to giving me moderator privileges. Come on. Give me the rank. Give me the rank now. Anything Else You Want to Add: This part has weird capitalization

Actually jealous I didn't think of this first. Absolutely +1, helps make it feel like a persistent world and seem less empty even on low pop. Fucking genius

Briar Sadar is always easy to work with as Captain. Responds well to whatever is happening in the round and generally goes along with the narrative. +1 -

I go there and witness the two Cyborgs ALLOY and BUDDY dragging the Engineer into the AI upload chamber, in front of T-0's mainframe. There, T-0 says, "INITIATE PAPERCLIP PROTOCOL" ALLOY and BUDDY begin folding the skrell into a paperclip. It was horrific and I don't think that it is conducive to a good working environment. I would like to add that the skrell Engineer repeatedly accused T-0 of being "just like Glorsh" as he was being restrained by the borgs, which is an insult not only to T-0 but also Tankovy (I have investments in that company), so there is some provocation involved. Submitted Evidence: [A 3 terabyte image of a monkey] Would you like to be personally interviewed?: [X] - Maybe Did you report it to a Head of Staff or a superior? If so, who? Sputnik5927 - Command Whitelist Application
Sputnik5927 replied to Sputnik5927's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Changed to Harald Brytforda. -
Sounds like an interesting idea for dealing with IPCs and Cyborgs. I wouldn't count on it for anything else really, because I assume using this thing will mean you can't fight properly. Maybe you can adapt the idea and make it useful against everyone or make it a deployable item.
-
I was under the impression that you thought IPCs were lawed or something like that. The second part, I'm bringing this up so that you do not take it as the ultimate rule that you must let the scientist burn to death to save your chassis. As for Redrun's story, I like it. It'll be interesting to see an IPC like this involved in Ops and the opportunity of roleplaying with miners at the spark. I would add some more content that describes his personality and how he came to have friends in the first place. Was he happy to have been stolen? How did the people react to him and how did he engage with them? Was he cold and robotic or lively and warm? How did he feel about being repossessed?
-
You said: 1. Not having any control over what they do sounds more like a Cyborg attribute. Positronics, for the most part, are very different in that aspect. What do you mean by this, exactly? 2. This highest directive was addressed some time ago, where the self-preservation directive can be overridden if an IPC values a cause highly enough. So an IPC might sacrifice itself for some kind of political ideal, if convinced enough. You should read through the IPC section in the lore discord so you don't miss anything. This is important for how IPCs behave in a critical situation.

Bobbob212 - Command whitelist
Sputnik5927 replied to Afya's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I've had the pleasure of roleplaying with Amara Nasr and only have good things to say. They strike me as someone who knows the spirit of the game and is very proactive when it comes to RP, which is a breath of fresh air and a relief for me. HRP is a very co-operative thing and Bob knows that very well. +1 from Sputnik. -

Sputnik5927 - Command Whitelist Application
Sputnik5927 replied to Sputnik5927's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
1. Shareholder does not imply anything like majority share. He has investments in the companies. Is that considered too much? 2. Executive Officers are part of the executive board. Am I misunderstanding this? -
BYOND key: Sputnik5927 Discord Username: Sputnik#3401 Character names (Active ones, in order of most played): Wolf Arges, Security Officer TAKMAN, Security Officer Tazan Mauli, Security Officer Harald Brytforda, Security Officer Martin Walker, Bridge Crew Shepherd Malric, Priest Mikhail Voroshilov, Shaft Miner Vladimir Khoromov, Merchant How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Since early August. Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they? Warnings and AI WL lost. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: The OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is to take care of their department and make sure things are operating in a lore-appropriate and adequately roleplayed way. This means, helping newer players learn the mechanics and rules of the department in question and keeping the department's members focused on the round and active. They serve as an authority figure, to give a round structure, especially if the round has an active antagonist. They also provide roleplaying opportunities with trainings, conferences, etcetera. Especially useful when the round is quiet and/or low-pop. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Given the nature of this being a whitelist, it demands competence and appropriate behaviour from the whitelisted player. A whitelisted player should be mature and able to avoid problems such as metagrudging, being disruptively overbearing as an IC authority and interrupting the flow of a good round. A whitelisted player is expected to know their department and be able to resolve problems properly. I know how to work with people, when and where to do what as an IC authority and how to keep people engaged in the round. As both a security main and antag player, I have a very good perspective on round flow and roleplaying dynamics, especially when it comes to antagonists. I will use this understanding to fill the respective roles appropriately. As a Head of Staff, I understand it will be my responsibility to be patient when issues arise and to always think twice before acting, because my actions could affect the entire round and/or the experience of individual players. I'll remember that. I have had the opportunity to interim multiple times and it has gone well. Explain how the recent events in the Spur changed your character and how they came to be employed on the SCCV Horizon. As of the time of writing, the situation in Tau Ceti can be described as cautiously hopeful. The Orchard Moon was defended and the Solarian warlords are dying out. The Phoron shortage is still far from being solved, but Biesel is steadily expanding and becoming more powerful, seizing disputed territories from the Solarian Alliance. Nick Armstrong is an ambitious businessman and investor, wanting to surf the wave of success that the SCC is experiencing. His investments in Phoron were saved with the Orchard Moon and his trust in the megacorporations was validated. Feeling confident in his choice of business partners, he's joined the SCC as an Executive Officer and is now looking to oversee the Horizon's money-making ventures. What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted? Captain, Executive Officer, Head of Security Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles? Yes. Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.: Martin Walker, Captain. Nick Armstrong, Executive Officer. Harald Brytforda, Head of Security. Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action? Yes. Have you linked your byond account to the forums? Yes. Extra notes: This will be Nick Armstrong's vibe. (Nick Armstrong was originally a scientist character, but I never did anything with him, so I am repurposing him.)
-
The IC aspect Before ship weapons were added, I was for the idea completely and I still am. The Horizon is too valuable to leave unguarded or at the mercy of hired deserters. I expected a modest armament of mostly defensive weapons such as flak weapons, point defense emplacements and a small to medium-sized cannon or two. Instead, we got: - One flak weapon - One battleship-sized cannon - And an energy artillery weapon aptly named the Leviathan, which can apparently destroy an entire city with one shot while at the same time draining the entire ship's energy reserves. This is so lop-sided, it's unreal. This is the armament of an experimental monitor or long-range artillery barge, not of a research and exploration cruiser. This change in the Horizon's combat capability seems to have inspired a trend in which the events become more and more about sending the Horizon into conflicts that it cannot win and/or should not even engage with. At the time of writing, the upcoming event will see the Horizon relocating to the Orchard Moon with other local SCC vessels to defend against a Solarian strike force. I can no longer suspend my disbelief when the SCC sends its most precious project, meant to search for Phoron, to a naval battle like this. Even if it was about protecting the Orchard Moon at all costs, Zavodskoi and other corporations have Security fleets that can be relocated in time. If not, what about allied military forces? I can find no logical reason for the SCC to send the Horizon, full of diplomats, high-ranking scientists, politicians, consulars and most importantly Phoron right into the arms of the SFA so that they can force a decisive battle against the SCC's most precious assets. The OOC aspect Forcing a civilian crew to engage in military operations repeatedly is not feasible. Today, I considered having my bridge crew character Martin Walker, who is a former Starliner captain, just say "I quit." and leave the Horizon. Because, why wouldn't he? This is not what he signed up for and the compensation on the Horizon is not nearly enough to keep people on-board under these conditions. Even for my security officer Wolf Arges, who is a combat veteran and would be desensitized to a battle like this, the event doesn't offer any interesting roleplaying avenues. To him and other characters like him, all that is left to say is "I can handle it, others can't." and that's about it. The line was already reached with the FSF versus Elyrans event, where a huge amount of trauma was inflicted on the crew. I have heard that the "constant trauma trips are exhausting", which I don't disagree with. I already dread having to make up a reason for my character(s) staying on the vessel and not quitting upon the waves of "kill the Solarians" mottos that will surely come after the event and reinforce Sol as the ultimate big bad with no ambiguity. With this next event, the line will be clearly crossed and I cannot reasonably justify lots of characters staying on the ship. In this case, my character Wolf would just ask himself why he isn't trying to get back into Eagle Corp as a soldier if Zavodskoi is just paying him much less for the same job. We cannot make it a norm to fight Solarian marines and sailors. That is not what the Horizon or the setting allows in its current state. The Horizon is not a warship and the crew is mostly civilians who have no combat experience. Most of them are not politically invested enough to risk their lives for the conglomerate, nor are they even united in their beliefs. The Horizon is a melting pot and it's crazy to use them as soldiers and expect them to perform properly. It's asking for another mutiny. It leads to a situation where you either have your character act against their actual personality or beliefs or force them to become hardened soldiers whenever the arc demands it, rather than in a dynamic and roleplay-driven way. I remember being made fun of for having a militaristic-minded veteran Solarian (Wolf Arges), both OOC and IC for being seen as cliché or out of place in an apparently very civilian corporate vessel. Now this same attitude prevails while taking what used to be the domain of the ex-military character (being desensitized to combat and knowing how to act in high-stress situations) and cramming it into the head of every other character, taking away that aspect of roleplay from ex-military characters and forcing civilian characters to sacrifice that part of their personality and deal with the fact they just took part in an extended firefight with Solarian marines or Elyran infantry. It doesn't work - these people would quit on the spot. At some point, it is no longer about "we have made it clear this is the way we are going" and more about if this is really the way the players want to go. I don't like it. This is not a personal attack on the lore team and I shouldn't have to point this out if it wasn't a commonly made accusation. Read what I've written and read the replies of this thread and consider carefully if this is the road you want to go down.

Fluffyghost - Command Whitelist Application

I know Ben Donitz and Trovensky Heapatus and although you had a rocky start, I can see that you've improved a lot. Believe me when I say that I had my own share of problems when I first started out. Anyway, you've dealt with it well and improved your roleplaying ability and lore knowledge. I have some concerns about seeing you in a command role because of your low playtime and only recent improvements, but I'd be willing to give you a shot. Have a trial, see how it goes. Sure you can manage if you try. +1 from Sputnik. -
Sputnik5927 - Tajara Whitelist Application
Sputnik5927 replied to Sputnik5927's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
1. The ALA could provide him with just the opportunity to lash out at those who caused him and his people so many hardships in the years past, trying to force the collectivist social strategy of the PRA on his fair village. Something to, at least in his mind, make do the labor that he had sacrificed to the PRA and to soothe his soul in that way. Beyond that, he believed that, now that this bombing had successfully occured, the ALA had a chance to liberate Adhomai from the other two factions. That there was an end-goal to the struggle which was just coming into reach and that there was more to the ALA than a feeble, struggling rebellion. 2. Tazan does not see it as anything immediately conflicting with his values. Although he is aware that working for a megacompany is hardly something fit for a freedom-loving and community-focused Zhan like himself, he justifies this with two reasonings. One being falling back on the idea that he is helping represent the DPRA positively. If he can show that the people of the DPRA are exemplary, brave and happy, then he can fulfill the mission they gave him with that invitation and maybe sway the world to view the DPRA as the right faction to support moving forward. The second reason: Money is a big focus for Tazan, because he grew up with relatively little in that way and would feel a duty to provide for his family, especially when given such a huge opportunity. To that end, he's planning to stay with the SCC for the immediate future. Whether he will enjoy his stay, do it simply out of duty or long to return to Adhomai - that remains to be seen. -
Kersh goes for the Command roles
Sputnik5927 replied to ErshOurHerzog's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
One thing I'd mention: It's important to note that your OOC purpose as a head of staff includes taking care of your department (or the heads of staff as Captain or XO) and making sure that everyone has something to do, especially when it comes to training newbies. You also should be expecting to deal with messy or chaotic rounds that you will have to help correct and get the game back on track. I am a little biased because Kersh is my friend, but I am going to heavily endorse this application for the following reasons: Kersh is an absolute maniac when it comes to roleplaying worlds. If he catches even a whiff of an interesting idea, he will spend hours researching it and learning everything about it. Especially important for Aurora. I find it so refreshing and inspiring to see someone so passionate for a fictional setting and world. I have absolutely no doubt that Kersh would make for a great Ta player, because he has two Vaurca characters already that have in-depth personalities and histories and are always awesome to roleplay with. He clearly enjoys Vaurca lore and has even gotten me interested in it myself. Besides, we could use a few more Tas. As for the role of Captain, he is by no means a lazy or inactive player and would be involved and do his best in the round - sometimes, that would be much better than I've seen before. He's very conscious of what he's doing and I don't believe that he's going to go into the Captain role without being prepared for the stress and responsibilities. Kersh is a friendly and approachable person who doesn't hold a grudge and is easy to work with. Very important for a command player and a player in general. One of the first people I became friends with on Aurora and was part of the reason I stuck around. Trusting this kind of person with the authority to make important decisions in a round is NOT a bad idea. Give him a shot, see how it goes. +1 from Sputnik.
