accepted YourDaddy117 - Command Application
naut replied to YourDaddy117's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I did love your style of commanding as HOS, being very clear to what you expect from your officers and giving them concise orders on what to do in the event of an emergency, like teaming up. While it seems simple, it stuck out to me as something that makes you appear really competent at your job. You were interesting to have an RP discussion with too, even if only for a brief period of time - your character was very well fleshed out in terms of background. +1 from me! -
Basic Information Byond key: Nauticall Character names: Leslie Asoya, Alessia Marino, Seoyeon Park (+ several other one-offs) Age: 21 Timezone: UTC+8 / Beijing Time What times are you most available?: 8PM - 12AM EST (reliably on weekends, unreliable on weekdays), 4AM - 12PM EST every day Experience How long have you played SS13?: Since about late 2019 now, so going on 4 years. How long have you played on Aurora?: Since June 2023. How active on the forums, discord and/or server are you?: I'm active on Discord on almost a daily basis. Forums much less so, but on the server proper I play about 1-3 rounds every other day. Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: I've not been banned. Have you ever volunteered as moderation staff for any other servers, SS13 or otherwise?: I have; I've modded for a handful of non-SS13 games, even becoming head admin for one at one point, as well as CM-SS13 in the past. I'm also currently a whitelist maintainer on CM-SS13. Do you have any other experience that you believe would be relevant to a position in the CCIA?: I have a lot of experience from both my moderation and also a little bit of non-professional management in handling complaints, running investigations, and making interviews. It's something I'm intimately familiar with and have developed experience in arbitrating with customers as well. I additionally took a year of business management in college and know the basics of handling human resources. Personality Why do you want to join the CCIA?: I'd like to join because the role of CCIA in handling disputes is fascinating to me. Aurora is the only server I know of that has such a system for resolving disputes in an IC manner without OOC intervention getting involved, and I think I can very much contribute to such a unique system. What do you think are the most important qualities for a CCIA Agent to possess?: I think the important ones are the ability to see the big picture, neutrality, communication, and also recognizing that this is a game and we're here to have fun. These would allow investigations to be carried out truthfully but also in a way that doesn't kill other peoples' enjoyment of the game. Big picture: It's important, in my opinion, to recognize both sides and the overarching goal of whatever job someone is doing, such as handling an IR. Getting tunnel vision by only focusing on what a single side did, for example, can be detrimental, and it also helps tremendously to remember and reflect on why you, and anyone involved, is performing a job. Is it because someone is actually concerned, or because of revenge, for example? Neutrality: As said above, it's important to take all sides into account when doing an investigation, even if it seems very cut-and-dry otherwise. Personal biases should also not factor into an investigation that one is handling for obvious reasons, and it should be noted that every witness can have a different recollection of what happened during an incident. Communication: Talking to people is one of the core aspects of being CCIA, and without good communication skills will be effectively left in the dust. Knowing what to say, when to say it, and who to say it to can make the difference between an hour-long session fo small talk and a fifteen-minute efficient interview. OOC, communicating with other CCIA members is also vital as it allows for arbitration and getting external perspectives. Asking other people for their opinions is a skill I've found to be vital in my decision-making over the years, and it's because communication makes it possible. It's just a game: I've admittedly been guilty of not recognizing this myself a handful of times, but I've come to recognize that in the grand scheme of things we're all here just to have fun. This isn't our actual job and we shouldn't be held to absolutely rigid standards that must never be broken like a real company. No customers are getting screwed over because of peoples' actions here; this is just another tool to help move the train along and promote the roleplay idea that we play as members of a real company. In the end, though, we shouldn't dogpile on someone to the point where they lose enjoyment altogether, even if it seems like the right thing to do. What do you think the purpose of a CCIA Agent is in an ongoing round?: I think this would be to represent the in-game bureaucracy that is SCC's central command. Playing the role of the higher-ups gives the sense that this is a believable setting, and that the Conglomerate does take incidents seriously and attempts to investigate. It lets characters know that even if only for the sake of minimizing losses, their employer does oversee affairs and look out for their staff. It's a stark contrast to, say, there being no central command at all. What do you think the purpose of a CCIA Agent is outside of the server?: I think their role outside the server is to handle investigations and overall make sure people are still having fun. IRs, to me, happen primarily because someone ICly is behaving or treating someone so poorly that it affects the believability or sensibility of the setting and also might hamper someone's enjoyment of the game. As a result, CCIA should help keep that immersion going by representing the SCC saying, "no, this is where we draw the line", and handling a situation that crosses it. How do you handle stress?: When stressed by something (for example, schoolwork), I put whatever is stressing me down (for an indefinite duration of time, admittedly) and turn my attention to working on some kind of chore or task, typically on the computer but also in real life, to help "cool down" my mind. I like to think of it as my form of meditation since I think about myself and the things I do while I focus on idle tasks. These can be games, or they can be game development, like spriting/mapping for SS13 or some other game entirely. How well do you work autonomously?: If I'm not in a leadership position I'll usually need someone giving orders to tell me to do something; however, once the executive order is given I like to think I can work very autonomously in how I do things, laying out the workflow and, if necessary, communicating with people and setting up jobs for me to do.

Reporting Personnel: Alessia Marino Job Title of Reporting Personnel: Captain Game ID: crv-aFUT Personnel Involved: Ilhe Razsaross, Shaman: Offender. Alessia Marino, Captain: Witness & reporting party. Suvek Tokash, Head of Security: Witness. Arrested the shaman for failure to execute an order, as they were ordered to the XO's office and refused. Ismet Al-Barghouti, Executive Officer: Witness. Suspended the shaman and ordered their initial arrest. -- Secondary Witnesses: Aayun Kaiser, Chief Engineer. Coordinated the initial firefighting efforts. Felix Fleeter, Engineer: Witness. Extinguished the fire in the chapel. Time of Incident: ~03:30 Ship Time Real Time: ~11:05 PM EST / 4:05 AM GMT, 12/28/2023 Location of Incident: Chapel, SCCV Horizon Nature of Incident: [ X ] - Workplace Hazard [ ] - Accident/Injury [ ] - Destruction of Property [ ] - Neglect of Duty [ ] - Harassment [ ] - Assault [ X ] - Misconduct [ ] - Other _____ (Place an x in the box that applies. If other, replace line and specify.) Overview of the Incident: Shaman Ilhe Razsaross was reported for lighting a bonfire in the chapel, posing a fire hazard. About a month ago on 11/13/2465, he had done a similar incident of lighting a fire in the chapel, which was also extinguished - such an incident additionally led to a brawl; however, details of the aftermath are irrelevant here. During the first incident, I had ordered the shaman to stop, following which he said he was exercising religious freedom and was within his rights to do so. In doubt, I faxed CCIA, who returned a reply (Exhibit B) stating it was not legal. I showed this to him, and he complied. No further incidents occurred afterward. The second occurrence took place today, 12/28. Shaman Razsaross repeated his previous actions and demands, insisting on official confirmation from the CCIA regarding his activities. This time, he was instructed to report to the XO's office for negotiations, an order that he refused. Consequently, the XO ordered his detention for failing to execute an order and subsequently suspended him. Upon his release from the brig, the XO stated that Razsaross told him that he would re-offend, saying that he would "start a fire again, regardless of his status as a chaplain." Razsaross went to residential shortly afterward. -- Submitted Evidence: Exhibit A & B: - CCIA fax messages from Mr. Greyswandir and Mr. Talponar, respectively, detailing CCIA's rulings on the matter. Exhibit C - Snapshot of the aftermath of the fire in the chapel caught by CCTV timestamp ~11:20. Bonfire and remains were cleaned up by engineering personnel. Exhibit D - XO's suspension form on Razsaross, following the latter's violation of i111. Would you like to be personally interviewed?: [ X ] - Yes [ ] - No Did you report it to a Head of Staff or a superior? If so, who? If not, why?: As I was the captain, this was reported to CCIA via fax (see exhibits A and B), and issued a cease and desist warning as per captain's orders. Actions taken: Shaman was arrested by security and suspended by the XO following my order to have him extinguish the fire, which he refused.

BYOND key: Nauticall Discord name/id: sammy (@nauticall) Borg / AI names: R4NGER (Robot) / Maverick (matriarch drone) / Oswin (planned AI name) Have you read the Aurora wiki page about the AI?: Yep, I have! Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: In the past in other servers, I've really loved playing AI as like this helpful, robotic assistant who oversees the ship and plays out like the sort of "caretaker" for the whole ship/station. It's an interesting departure from the standard round flow of playing someone on two legs, and I found it to be quite fun and just satisfying to me to be helpful in whatever way I could. I also loved playing AI on Baystation before it was removed (rip) because the interactions between AI and the crew were much more than just "LAW 2 OPEN DOOR". I'm hopeful the experience will be good, if not better, on Aurora and I look forward to it as a result. Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they? Nope. Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action? I do. (Copy-paste from the last AI app I made and fumbled. Let's try this again.)

BYOND Key: nauticall Discord Username: nauticall Character Name: Alessia Marino Item Name: Voidwarder Sphere Item Function(s): It's a religious good luck charm, so nothing, except glowing brighter and bluer than a standard warding sphere. Item Description: A special variant of a warding sphere that shines even brighter and for far longer than a traditional sphere. These Voidwarders are given especially to Luceian explorers, first responders, and crew of starships that cross the boundary of Light's Edge into the suffocating blackness of the Lemurian Sea - Assunzione's version of Hell. Those said to venture into the Sea with a Voidwarder and the Church's blessing are said to have narrowly survived their encounters with certain death in the Sea and emerged from the darkness a changed, more faithful individual. The Church allows explorers who have been given these spheres to keep them after their travels, as a reminder of what they had accomplished: marching into the gates of Hell and living to tell the tale. Why is your character bringing this item to work?: Warding spheres are a traditional item owned by Assunzioniis, and Alessia is no exception. It's a sort of good luck charm to her, a beacon of light that she, and her religion, believe will guide her through the stars. How did your character obtain this item?: The Voidwarder sphere was gifted to her by the Luceian Church pending her expedition into the Lemurian Sea. What value does this item have to your character, and what story does it tell?: The sphere is a testament to Alessia's past as one of the explorers who ventured into the highly-feared Lemurian Sea, surviving narrow brushes with death while traveling inside the region for research and managed to survive. To her, her Voidwarder, as well as the Voidwarder spheres of every Assunzionii on her ship, were what helped guide them through to safety, saving them from the dangers that lurk in the dark. As a result, she places a great amount of faith in the item and believes it contributed to keeping her well and will continue to do so until its light burns out. Sprites: The purple case is a placeholder, but the sphere is the final-ish design. The intention is to make the 'star' around the sphere's eye rotate around in 3D. Additional Comments: This item bases a lot of its lore on the Luceism rework I made, which I have also put up an application for on the canon app section. Just an FYI in case that gets shot down for some reason.

Lore Impact (Small/Medium/Large): Medium Species: (Skrell, Tajara, Human, Vaurca, Dionae, Unathi, Synth, General): Human, with a touch of Dionae Short Description: Overhauls and expands on Luceism as a religion, adding details like its afterlife, core beliefs, and prayers. How will this be reflected on-station?: Hopefully more consistency with Assunzionii characters and how they portray their religion, as well as possibly more Luceian clergy. Does this addition do anything not achieved by what already exists?: Yes, it expands on the existing Luceism page and overhauls certain aspects. Do you understand that the project may change over time in ways you may not foresee once it is handed over to the Lore Team? Yes. Long Description: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BnG3ABl8JXsYov4i1l2ndaXbitKd7Fs_A25wkYqyL6o/edit?usp=sharing May light guide you on your journey.

Aagh. I'm torn - on the one hand, I know ling has the potential for fun RP if the stealth aspect is played out and actually used to the full extent. But on the other, as I'm sure everyone who played that massacre of a round with two lings on the Intrepid would feel, having people go murderbone and ravage the entire crew within 30 minutes - before being permakilled by security and leaving the rest of the round as glorified extended - is not fun at all. As Meep said, if we're to go the route of keeping ling we definitely need to change the way it works. Right now the gameplay loop is this: absorb one person, be discovered by security, firefight ensues, fake death, resurrection, hide in maints, firefight again, repeat until horror form and/or head is destroyed. The way seemingly everyone plays it right now is as just, outright, The Thing, something that works on more traditional SS13 servers, where the entire crew can contribute to stopping lings. But on Aurora, RP is key, and lings, as they are right now, are just not RPed well at all. Making lings be better at stealth while being worse in outright combat would benefit the gameplay loop massively. On the other hand, I'm simultaneously in the club of advocating for just outright removal from rotation. Again, the Massacre on the Intrepid soured everyone's minds in that regard, and mine too. The round was completely hands-off for everyone who wasn't on the Intrepid, and was particularly extremely disappointing for me, the CMO, as we had struck a motherlode on carpotoxin, and were practically swimming in bottles of rezadone which we'd have loved to have used. But, instead, everyone dies on the Intrepid, even the Rangers got no gameplay out of that round (I felt extremely bad telling them that they were no longer needed honestly), medical was entirely deserted and the rest of security only got their kicks in with a brief firefight that ended in the destruction of the last ling. I'd love to say this was an isolated case, but it isn't - many ling rounds go this way; people end up being killed or vanished so quickly that a whole bunch of people are left feeling robbed of a round, either from being dead or just being starved of things to do. TL;DR, ling needs to be changed in some way. There are a few arguments for nerfing and a few arguments for removal. I'm honestly fine with trying out either direction as long as we take a turn and don't just keep heading down the status quo, because ling, as it is right now, is flat-out not fun for me, and I imagine not for a lot of people either.

Oko is a fantastic CE to work with, and in my experiences with them both as acting Captain, CMO, and as an engineer, they roleplay wonderfully and have a good personality, while still being competent at their work. +1 from me!

Ckey/BYOND Username: Nauticall Discord Name: nauticall (sammy) Position Being Applied For: Spriter Past Experiences/Knowledge: I've been spriting for over two years at this point. I'm currently a spriter maintainer over at CMSS13 and have had a looot of PRs made on there. I'm experienced with anything from turfs/walls, to objects, to clothing. I'm also used to 3/4 and would like to help with that project if I can. Examples of Past Work: My PRs from CM: https://github.com/cmss13-devs/cmss13/pulls?q=is%3Apr+author%3Anauticall My PRs on Aurora: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pulls?q=is%3Apr+author%3Anauticall Image examples: Additional Comments: I'd love to work on some stuff related to 3/4 if I can. CM's in a pretty good state sprite-wise right now so I was thinking I could swap contributions to another codebase for sometime, and I'd love to give Aurora a fresh coat of paint on top, just like I did for a lot of CM's stuff. Thank you for reading!

BYOND key: Nauticall Discord username: nauticall Character names Seoyeon Park (Chief Medical Officer-hopeful) CMO character I intend to play for the trial. Leslie Asoya (Physician) Mendellian clinician and physician who spent the first half of her career pampered in a District One hospital. Caffeine addict and perpetually sleep-deprived. Lina Santoro (First Responder) Semi-experienced and introverted Assunizoni paramedic and devout Luceian with a strong interest to learn about the wider universe. Linnea Bergsdottir (Engineer) New Gibson Undirstad former reactor technician and current Horizon engineer. Tomboyish, outgoing, brash, and an avid partygoer. Loves Vaurca. Astrid Sorensen (Surgeon) New Gibson Ovanstad surgeon. Sassy and confident. (Also, tragically underdeveloped.) R4NGER (Robot) Not much to say about them besides the fact that they’re a robot. Helpful. How long have you been playing on Aurora? About two months now, give or take. Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they? Not that I know of. All bwoinks I’ve had were just responses to me asking stupid questions. Please provide well-articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame? Heads are there to regulate round flow. They’ve got both hard and soft power to influence the round in a far greater way than the standard staff, and as a result, should do their best to make the round enjoyable for everyone involved. As people always say, command staff have a degree of authority to be able to destroy an antagonist’s gimmick on the spot, and it subsequently leads to the round becoming glorified Extended for the next hour and a half; it’s not fun for the antagonist and it’s not fun for anyone else who wanted conflict and action. Heads are also managers. They control their staff and coordinate to ensure the gears turn nicely and well-lubricated. In the command hierarchy, they’re the link between the Bridge and individual departments; if the Captain gives an order to, for example, prepare the Intrepid for a rescue mission, it’s up to individual department heads to ready their respective departments for roles they’ll play; the CMO will prep first responders for casualty treatment, the CE will prep their engineers for damage control, and the HOS will prep their officers for hostile threats (if applicable). The heads are there to prevent the people at the very top from micromanaging, and act as coordinators, liaisons, and advisors to their relevant fields. They know their department best, and should be referred to for situations regarding their departments’ specialties or jurisdictions. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them? Whitelisted players in particular are whitelisted to uphold a specific standard; in Command’s case, it would be mechanical competence, roleplay ability, and to a lesser but still prominent extent, improvisation and acting. They should also be good roleplayers, aiming to seed an environment of good character interactions and storytelling in an immersive way. Again, command roles can sway the round far more than regular staff, and they can wield that in more ways than just mechanical advantages. They can mentor, they can set standards, and they’d be looked at as professionals. I’d ideally strive to be of this class too: someone who people can look up to for roleplay, mechanical knowledge, and leadership. Explain how the recent events in the Spur changed your character and how they came to be employed on the SCCV Horizon. What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted? CMO, at first. Maybe in the future, once I rack up more expertise, I’ll go for maybe CE, XO, or even Captain. Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles? Yes, I have. Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking: Seoyeon Park (Chief Medical Officer-hopeful) Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action? I understand. Have you linked your BYOND account to the Forums? Yep. Extra notes: I hope this doesn't sound like padding, but if it means anything, I also played Command roles for about 2 years on Baystation before moving here. I’m going to be on one last vacation from August 2 - 6, so if I somehow manage to get a trial, I’d like the main bit of it to take place the week after (July 7 - 12), if possible. Thank you for your time! I'm fine if this application doesn't make it; I'll keep looking for ways to improve 'til I do. You miss every shot you don't take after all.

yes! i've actually considered something just like it too and I'm glad other people are thinking about it. i'm not an expert coder but i might have an idea for how to do this in mind.....
