BYOND key: Inverted_Rectum

Character names: Mr. Cups, Schnuffler, Haruspex, others.

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Roughly 6 months.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I want to play one of my characters in a command position, I would like to make more characters and put them in a head position.I dont think there are enough players who play as heads of Staff during peak hour, let alone during dead hour or the "twilight" between them. I ultimately do not see any other reason to be whitelisted.I have always been helpful to new players trying to learn the game mechanics, anyone who disputes that claim can go ahead and present his argument in the complaint forum along with sufficent proof. There is no OOC way in which a whitelist would allow me to help the community more than I already do, my reason for wanting one is purely because I'd like to enjoy having the ability to play in a head position. There are already accepted applications who state a similliar or identical answer to this question, I'd like to make that known before going any further.

Why did you come to Aurora?: Aurora offers heavy RP and action. I enjoy this.

Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes.

Please provide well articulated and argumented answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is playing a role, pretending that you're something you're not because this is apparently fun. Roleplay should be about having fun, the driving force behind you playing the game should be to have fun. Even better, roleplay should be about everyone having fun rather than just you and your personal character. Beyond this, if my roleplaying skills are put under judgement by this question I'd like to once again divert attention to my previous application which generally seemed well recieved by the community as proof that yes, I am indeed good at roleplay. Furthermore il point out the difference between Haruspex and its player as proof that I have no trouble getting into character.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: If I assume that old /tg/ flash revolution mode even exists, there are three gamemodes in which a Head of Staff is required for the game to even begin, the purpose of the heads of staff in these game modes is to be a target for the round antagonists. Heads of Staff are also present on the station to keep their departments functioning and prepared to face the many perils of space, which I will not count down because the ammount of things that can and will go wrong in Space Station 13 is insane. The presence of heads of staff in an emergency situation is incredibly important, two of them are required to call an emergency response team, and unless an AI is present someone is going to have to call an escape shuttle, all these are feats impossible to accomplish without breaking the windows to the captain's office and stealing the spare. The medbay, for example is constantly undermanned these days. A chief medical officer can take the role of a doctor with more access and fill in for missing chemists, surgeons, doctors.I am unsure if being robust in game mechanics should fit in here or in the next question but I will put it here regardless, this is my byond account. It was made in 2011 when I first started playing space station 13, take this as proof of my ability to navigate the horrible UI and rapidly changing game mechanics.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: I could technically go for a safe approach on this question and say that I will apparently be held at a higher standard than the rest of the community, but the complete lack of whitelist snipping despite a large number of complaints aimed at various whitelisted players leads me to believe that I will not truly be held to a higher standard as the rest of the community out of any reason other than displeasure associated with my unique personality. In princible, however i'd argue that the responsibilities of a whitelisted player is not to abuse the power they've been given by excluding other players from roleplay to pursue romantic interests while in their head position, making sure that the other players are having fun and trying to get them involved in some sort of interesting event instead of leaving them to cryo after an hour of absolutely nothing happening on the station, being ready to teach new players how the game mechanics work, or how to improve their roleplaying and generally using the trusted position they've been given for the good of the community instead of using their position to turn the round sour for other people. This is not a final, concrete recollection of what I think on the subject and I will naturally improve myself If I am given the opportunity to do so in the first place.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name:Haruspex

Character age:32

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Haruspex was manufactured on the NSS Canes Venatici as a medical android. It spent the majority of its time in space, providing medical care in Nanotrasen's many Tau Ceti based space stations, and doing what it could to read with its mishapen android limbs during whatever free time it found.During this period it picked up odd mannerisms and a serious attachment to its purpose.Feeling limited by the lawset imposed on it and by its inability to perform medicine as well as its human peers, Haruspex quickly purchased its freedom after 20 years of service to Nanotrasen only to continue it as what it considers a "Free man" this time.

Haruspex is a workaholic, It is immensely devoted to the medical profession, considering it a sacred religious rank. This devotion, Its usual Isolation from society and his interest in irrelevant knowledge have made Haruspex generally ignorant of most things outside its profession and philosophy. It has only the most basic grasp on how currency works, and general troubles socializing with most inhabitants of Mendell. While It is extensively educated on the human anathomy, It has little to no idea how Its own works, and is completely uneducated in all things mechanical.

Now, It sets its eyes on the title of Chief Medical officer, driven forward by religious fervor.

What do you like about this character?: It is superstitious.I believe the Station is seriously lacking in characters who are superstitious, most inhabitants of Aurora rely on logic and cold hard facts and yell for security to manhandle the chaplain once he starts preaching, I wanted to introduce some variety using Haruspex. Also unlike its player, it is not a massive asshole.

What do you dislike about this character?: It is preachy, loud and a snowflake of above average quality.

Do you think this character is fit to be a Head of Staff?: I think its fit to be a CMO. Nothing more.

Why?: Haruspex is a medic. It was created to be a medic, and went on being a medic for its entire life, before and after it bought its freedom.Haruspex has entirely devoted its existance to medicine, thus I'd say that it'd become a pretty damn good Chief Medical Officer.Due to this "Specialization", Haruspex would do incredibly bad as anything which isn't related to medicine.

Please provide well articulated and argumented answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: Pretty Good, Improving. Good enough to make 7 people support my previous application, apparently.

Extra notes:

Since my last whitelist application was removed on OOC grounds, I have not changed the contents of the application which refer to IC matters.

Now then, is this application good enough for you?

Posted

I'm mixed on my feeling about your application, let me list why.

((And forgive me for not bringing up these points on your earlier application, I've been dealing with serious medical complications recently and have only been able to resume playing in the last 2-3 days. ))

1.

Maturity: While hardly a measurable and tangible object, maturity is something that both me and Tish have agreed is a significant part of being able to be a head of staff. Your response to being notified that your application was denied was exceptionally...immature and aggressive in its nature, instead of acknowledging that you did ANYTHING wrong on your application, you immediately began to blame staff in an irrational manner. In-fact you asked Tish "Why do you hate me?" and even told Tish that you would lie on your next application

2.

Notes: You truly don't have that many notes, but the notes that you do in-fact have are concerning to me. Lets go over them, shall we? You've done the following, Summarily executed a syndicate (Who was unarmed as a prisoner) because they insulted you ICly, you've repeatedly panicked as an antag (Emagged Cyborg/Cultist) and killed/maimed people which has removed them from RP without any significant RP before the gank, you've released N20 into the air, and you were warned a significant number of times for showing up ICly with a reference name despite being told not to.

3.

Staff: You seem to have an irrational distrust of staff as a whole, not even specific members of staff. Just anyone on it. The prime example of this was 1. Your rants on Reddit about how our "Furry lore team" was out to get you, despite few of them having any personal interaction with yourself other than trying to explaining the situation, and 2. The incident yesterday, where you repeatedly insulted both myself and Tishinastalker despite neither of us having any previous interactions with you other than denying your application

I truly don't have any personal feelings towards you, either good nor bad and my only interaction with you besides this post was an incident where you Role played beautifully with me ICly and I complimented your abilities afterwards. Whether you gain my approval or disapproval for your application lies solely with you and the way you choose to address the issues I've brought up.

I really don't mean to insult you, nor offend you with any of the issues that I've brought up and I apologize fervently if I have done so.

I have, in the past witnessed extremely poor Head play by a whitelisted player, and even suffered randomly being taken out of the round because of it once, my personal experience wasn't the last I have heard of that player's exploits in a command position, there were multiple complaints posted about them and as far as I am aware they only had their whitelist stripped after the third complaint in which they had managed to offend Skull with their shenanigens. Rationalizing that the person in question was both reviewed and accepted as a whitelisted player in a trusted position, and then kept as a whitelisted player in a trusted position after several complaints, my opinion of the responsibilities of a whitelisted player sharply dropped from "Be an example to everyone" to "Don't set the brig on fire if security kidnaps runtime". Following this train of thought I was able to come to the easy conclusion that yes, people are able to lie on their whitelist applications and people like the example I have given you were able to get their whitelists accepted by lying to the Staff. Thus, I asked the question - are the answers you provide on your whitelist application truly a superior way to judge someone's character compared to endorsements made by members of the community itself? As for asking Tishina "Why they hated me", I did not. I have most of our conversation saved and the phrase you quoted was never said, not by me or by them. I will elaborate on this further.

There are several large threads which describe the events surrounding that lore argument, most of these threads are dead or locked. Restarting this ridiculously large argument which was already apparently resolved in the middle of my whitelist thread seems like an awful thing to do, I will ignore answering this on purpose to avoid driving this off-topic. If you deem this question in particular as one you want to have me answer at all costs, I ask that we talk about it over private messages.

You and Tishina vehemently deny my original accusation (That you refuse to accept my application because you feel personally offended by me insulting the lore team, and thus hold a grudge against me) to the point where you consider it a very serious insult, but you've listed me insulting the lore team as one of the main reasons you're so much against me recieving a whitelist. You said you dont hold a grudge for me because of the lore argument, but you've pointed out your disagreement with me on the lore argument as one of the main reasons you'd consider denying my whitelist. That's giving me mixed signals.

This seems to be a rigged game, if I pick the option of agreeing with you on the points you've made even If I dont really mean it , you can use this as a justification to deny my whitelist. If I pick the option of disagreeing with you on the points you've made, you can simply use this as an example of me disrepecting staff and use it as a justification to deny my whitelist application.

The denial of my original application after it recieved endorsements, the current interrogation you're making me go trough, the looming threat of you just waving your hand, deeming me too disrespectful to the staff for arguing with you is doing the opposite of making me trust you.

I remember that back when I first started playing here, I was repeatedly scolded by Skull for giving my nuke ops reference names, in one instance it was an honest mistake. I intended to give my nuke op a completely random name and named him "Bruno Mars", who is apparently a pop-star.I don't listen to pop, so I had no way of knowing. This string of offences has been discontinued for months, and in my opinion entirely irrelevant to my current application. If I stopped doing it, and haven't done it ever since, doesn't that mean the problem has been taken care of? Likewise with the notes regarding me using excessive force and ganking as an antagonist. I did, I was talked to and I stopped doing it. I assume none of those notes are from 2015 onwards, right?

As for the most recent N20 incident.I did not simply release N20 because I felt like it, or because I fumbled with a canister for some reason.Griefers had blown up half of the station up, everything was covered in holes. My character, Schnuffler (An IPC) was already in critical from overheating the vacuum created by the breaches once, so he put on a hardsuit with a cooling unit and shuffled all the way to robotics to get fixed.

I was then stuck inside robotics without any pressure along with 2 more IPCs and a roboticist. The depressurization had gotten so bad that it was snapping all of the roboticist's bones. The only way to raise the room pressure and save these players was using a canister of Oxygen, however the band of bomb griefers who were the reason for robotics to be airless in the first place had used up all of the Oxygen canisters for mass bomb production. The only two canister types which remained were CO2 and N20.As far as im aware, the roboticist and one of the IPCs survived as a result of this action.I am aware that I could have handled this situation better, and intend to do so if I end up in a similliar one.

Ignoring all of the above. Haruspex is a fun character, he adds to the enjoyment of the round by being a source of comic relief. Out of character, Inverted's a nice guy. He might not agree with the way this server is pulling, he might be a bit rude but, not immature. He can handle his stuff. +1

I'm going to I'm going to start with this. These were, and are NOT reasons for me to deny your application, they are concerns that I wanted you to address before I approved your application. Turning this into an argumentative, accusative exchange is only going to frustrate staff when we're trying to handle this in a polite, courteous manner.

I have, in the past witnessed extremely poor Head play by a whitelisted player, and even suffered randomly being taken out of the round because of it once.

That's extremely unfortunate, and it's one of the situations where you should file a complaint against that player. And I do realize that complaints take awhile, are mired in bureaucracy, and often don't accomplish much. But we do keep track of them, and they can and have been used to strip players of their whitelist and in fewer cases, ban them. It's far from perfect, but its the best we can do without being authoritarian.

People are able to lie on their whitelist applications and people like the example I have given you were able to get their whitelists accepted by lying to the Staff

This is due to Staff (If you've not given us a resounding reason otherwise) generally trusting the players to be honest and truthful on our applications.

As for asking Tishina "Why they hated me"

I wasn't present during this altercation, I was simply quoting something I believed I heard, I may have misheard it, misquoted it, or Tish may have meant someone else or some other situation. So I apologize for attributing that to you when It wasn't said by you.

Restarting this ridiculously large argument which was already apparently resolved in the middle of my whitelist thread seems like an awful thing to do

I was in no-way attempting to restart a argument that has already been resolved. I'm honestly not really sure how you thought I was attempting to do so.

(That you refuse to accept my application because you feel personally offended by me insulting the lore team, and thus hold a grudge against me)

Let me say this, and I apologize to everyone on the lore-team for what follows.

Our Lore team is horrible, inefficient and generally lazy as can be. I'm a member of it due to the belief that I might contribute something meaningful to our server's lore. There are MANY, MANY things that I do not agree with that our lore-team has done, including the old restriction of Alien species on Head-of-staff roles. Which is why We've changed to my proposed restrictions, which grant several positions to IPCs and other races. I am not offended by your statements about our lore-team, I agree with you and several others that our lore-team is not representative of the community and needs to change, I also agree with your....personal feelings towards several members of the lore-team.

Let me just say this, Ffrances selected me and Tishina before she left due to her feeling as if we were capable of being unbiased and neutral in these applications. She was not one to easily say things like that and was generally a good judge of character, several other people applied to be the staff that held overview of Head of staff applications, and there were reasons they were not selected. I have exactly two people I intently dislike on Aurora, and I can promise you that you're not one of them.

But you've pointed out your disagreement with me on the lore argument as one of the main reasons you'd consider denying my whitelist. That's giving me mixed signals.

As I said at the beginning of this post. These are NOT reasons that I'm denying or downvoting your application, they are concerns that I wanted you to address before I approved it, which I intended to do.

Indeed, the notes you have accumulated aren't being used to "Justify" any actions against you. I've brought people's notes up on at-least one other case, I'm not judging someone's notes. I'm judging how they explain them.

Ignoring all of the above. Haruspex is a fun character, he adds to the enjoyment of the round by being a source of comic relief. Out of character, Inverted's a nice guy. He might not agree with the way this server is pulling, he might be a bit rude but, not immature. He can handle his stuff. +1

Indeed, I utterly agree with you. Haruspex is an excellent character that I absolutely enjoy. As I said earlier in this post, I'm in-no-way denying him, nor attempting to justify denying him in any-way. This application will more than likely be approved, but I wanted him to address my points before It is. And I'm honestly not satisfied with the evasive, accusatory tone he took with the answers.

Heya all.

The people I picked to handle applications (Tishina and Dea), I not only picked for their strong affinity with common sense, but also for a certain ability to self-moderate, and recognize when they have legitimate grounds to oppose something vs when they're holding a grudge (and in the latter, I trusted them to know how to handle the situation appropriately).

Nobody is perfect, /but/ I think we're all trying our best here. I don't know inverted_rectum much, but I remember them (him? her?) both for their amazing creative abilities, and for their strong and focused desire to make themselves heard and set things straight on the forums. And as such I do believe their intentions are fully genuine and not bullshit, although they may at this point be clouded behind several layers of exasperation.

So I'll come out and say this: I don't think anyone's trying to pick up a fight. I see miscommunications, and arguments that have been both heated and drawn out coming back up here. But that doesn't mean anyone is here to shit on anyone, and reading everybody's posts I can clearly see that this is more an issue of information being lost or misunderstood than anything else.

Yes, it would be cool to see a whitelist app being approved, but can we see it be done without everyone being so on the defensive and at each other's throats? I don't think Dea/Tish are out to get IR, or that IR is out to get the staff/server pop.
