Then remove the joke and reference brands and make the in-game tobacco based on in lore companies and organizations. We shouldn't have not-camel and Lucky Strike in the game.

If you really want to establish the point that this is entirely in game and not advertising/supporting real tobacco you need to disconnect it from real life branding.

It's also worth noting that the alcohol and drugs in the game house specific downsides to them for overindulgence or are played for laughs. Alcohol can kill you if you consume too much of it and makes you slur your words and get fired at work, and mindbreaker makes the game intolerable to play. 

Someone once introduced mechanics that made it penalize you for smoking too much, but it got panned for being a frustrating and unfun mechanic that required you to go take surgery. As a result the precedent you have set here is that it's fun to smoke cigarettes and there are no downsides to it because that would inhibit our fun smoking cigarettes.  No one coughs by smoking or causes nearby people who aren't smokers to experience discomfort, it's just a talking point and an animated sprite.  No social stigma for smoking in an enclosed area unless there is a nearby no smoking sign to point at.  This is offensive social coding to me, and clearly also to Jackboot, so we're not some kind of isolated liberal maniacs trying to ruin everyone's fun here.  We'd just like you to tone it down, not remove all tobacco from the game.

yes the smoking hurts you thing was panned because no one gets lung cancer from a single pack. I view smoking in SS13 as part of the aesthetic, its the sci fi future but some things stay the same. I also think loads of variety are cool. And on dip? yell at people IC for spitting on the floor or such. and I seriously doubt SS13 smoking is going to be the tipping point on anyone. if we are afraid SS13 induces or supports bad behavior there are many worse ones we could point to than smoking

Never did I ever expect to read something like this said entirely without irony.

Taking offense at pixel cigarettes is, frankly, ridiculous, and I don't know if having one (1) other person who allegedly thinks the same as you is enough to make it rational or reasonable.

I don't see why you need mechanics to back up simply roleplaying disliking nearby smokers or smoking in the workplace. You don't need game mechanics to tell you that having someone next to you smoke is disgusting -- you just, you know, act like it.

Is all the complaint in the OP about brand bloat just a strawman for some deeper agenda involving being upset about the portrayal of smoking in a 2D pixel space game, or something? Your argument seems to have turned off onto a completely different track somewhere down the line.

This thread has reached a level of derisive back and forth exchange that is admittedly partially my fault for letting the statements of others irritate me so I deviated  the conversation topic into stupid shit like social coding to try and defend my point, egged on by marlon's agreement.  My bad.  It also has made me desire to nope out of this threads current levels of toxicity, though.

Point being, it is bloaty. There are too many brands of tobacco and tobacco, and they are too redundant for the sake of it. Cut them down, remove chewing tobacco.

I'm done here, do whatever you want with this suggestion, bye.

I don't agree with removing something so recently added, particularly in regard to how little it will affect an individual on the average round. If we were focused on hygiene and realism we would be banning Tajara from working in Medical and the Kitchen, and enforcing stricter uniform regulations on everyone in regards to minimizing unnecessary fibers in the closed air atmospherics.

Let the people have their variety, and fuck off with this '4 da keedz' argument that poisons a great deal of debates these days. If someone's old enough to be playing a murder simulating spess game filled to the brim with ERPers and furries they can handle knowing that cigarettes and snus exist.
