[Accepted] YourDaddy117 IPC Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: YourDaddy117

Character Names: Jonathan Redwood salty detective, Connor Holmes fun police CSI, Scott Teller green as grass Sec Officer and former janitor

Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character: Either highlighter yellow or bright neon green. N/A

Have you read our lore section's page on this species: Yes and then some.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I've always had an interest in synthetics in sci-fi, especially the uncanny valley almost human sort of synthetics like Bishop from Aliens. I've never been able to explore this interest in much of an RP setting until since I don't find the lore for them interesting in other servers/settings. However Aurora's lore for IPCs does actually strike my fancy and being able to explore a non-human mindset fully is something I'm very interested and hope will help me get better at my roleplay in other forms. Not to mention I can get a different look at certain OOC mechanics I haven't played much with.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Well we can start with the obvious physical differences. Being metal humanoids running off power cells they have plenty of advantages and disadvantages mechanically. Where a human would have to express pain in response to being shot, for example, an IPC would probably simply express depending on the severity of damage done to it's systems. My body senses injuries. The data would be called "pain". However one shot of an Ion rifle and they're pretty much toast. This and the other mechanical differences provides plenty of opportunities in RP regarding the nature of what an IPC can do that a human can't and vice-versa. That isn't to say that one should actually play like a terminator considering that IPC have self preservation just as much as, if not more then, humans.

Obviously mechanical differences aren't the only thing separating IPCs from their human counter parts. The most important difference is how they think. Where a human would often be guided by their emotions and "gut feelings" an IPC is still at the end of the day a machine.  A machine that works off of logic and only has the basics of what we would normally consider emotions. Their expressions are simply mimicry designed to make the client and fellow human workers more comfortable with their mechanical peers. One of the most important aspects to note is that where a human is unpredictable and prone to knee-jerk reactions the IPC is a predictable, calculating, machine.

Character Name: IRU-Jack

Please provide a short backstory for this character:

A year old Idris Incorporated shell a part of the Reclamation Unit line IRU-Jack (designation IRU-0436) is a recent addition in the growing investment of new and improved shells working in the Chicago branch.  Being a relatively new unit Jack has been designed t to represent a new, more cutting edge look for the reclamation units as well as the company as a whole. With talks that the company could potentially be making moves to cut their losses in Ceti all eyes were on Jack and the newer units. Jack himself had been performing adequately enough in Chicago, working the night shifts in the city when the more seedier and flakier customers were active. His main function being, of course, the investigation and retrieval of assets deemed dangerous to his fleshy counterparts. IRU-Jack has been proven to be effective, albeit overzealous. As more time went on the more the System Supervisor noticed a distinct reliance of "reasonable force" on the part of Jack. IRU-Jack's combative nature with "trouble customers" as well as his over use of "reasonable force" has reflected poorly on his performance reports, causing the System Supervisor to reevaluate the unit and deem it necessary for a temporary relocation

While the company appreciates results Idris has always prized itself on it's excellent customer service. Therefore it was deemed fit that IRU-Jack was in need of further evaluation and testing. He was sent over to NSS Aurora as both a gesture of goodwill and a trial in which he was to make efforts to improve his "customer relations". Of course this test run would be done within the sanctions of the Mendell branch to avoid any negative looks being thrown in the way of the growing Chicago branch were he to somehow fail.

What do you like about this character:

Like I said in the earlier segments of the app I enjoy the Bishop-esque kind of synthetics often seen in sci-fi media. What interests me so much about shells is the juxtaposition of their very nature. A shell is still an IPC underneath the synthskin. It reaches an odd place in the uncanny valley where you have this almost perfect visual mimic of a real human being that acts, and is, wholly robotic. This also let's me approach Detective/CSI from a different angle then the standard "40's Noir Hard boiled detective".

How would you rate your role-playing ability:

This one's hard because I'm trying to find a way to balance between being a massive narcissist and too much self depreciation. Overall I'd say I'm pretty solid in terms of RP, being able to create a character I feel can be taken seriously within the setting and as a character. With motivations, flaws, etc. I would note that sometimes I tend to get really deep in the creation of a character and just never play them but once I have a personality I like in a role I enjoy it's pretty easy to stick with it. I have some decent amount of RP experience from Baystation12, although I'll admit I'm by no means a veteran of RP nor SS13 as a whole.

Notes:

  • While I'd consider myself somewhat well known in the community of Bay I'm pretty new to Aurora. While I've played a few rounds and consider myself pretty comfortable in it's atmosphere I'm still learning a few things.

Hey, you finally went and did it.

Despite the odd ckey, 117 is one of the best roleplayers I knew, overall, on Baystation12. He played an officer role admirably and always worked to get people involved and interested. Furthermore, he is a huge Deus Ex nerd. I, personally, am excited to see what his take on IRUs is like and this application has my fully support. Best of luck!

I usually keep myself away from answering apps, but this one, I always liked IPC's and I like seeing more and more players applying for IPC whitelists.

Well, the app itself is good, but, the good part comes after the beginning of the application where, since it is your first post on the forums it seems, it made me question if this application had any hope.

It does

You could have done a wee bit nicer with tbe part where you explain the differences between a human and an IPC. Whereas indeed everything is just 0's and 1's for an IPC, they differ. Some are pre programmed positronics that follow a certain task, speak in a certain way and you'd think they're just a humanoid stationbound. Other IPC's are more like a human. Of course, to a certain degree.

But they can speak more like a human, act very similar and even learn new things.

Well, I won't go blabbering anymore since I don't do well with writing comments in the morning, but I wanted to leave this comment as a sincere display of support towards your IPC app.

I'm not the biggest fan of shells. That said, what you have in mind for the one you potentially play could be interesting. But I do trust it's not going to be an excuse to lapse into this over reliance of "reasonable force" when you deal with crew. Understanding seems well enough to me.

Other than that. I do have experience with them from Bay. They put their heart into their roleplaying, and they do try. They don't cause issues either. Good, but there's always room for improvement. I think Aurora will be a good environment for them, and they've been doing well during their time here already.

Hopefully we see what you can do with this.

Your app provides a good understanding of IPCs as well as IRUs. Thank you for the pleasant read!

From an ooc perspective my only concern, would have been in regards to Jack's degree of reasonable force. However, based on the responses to your application, I trust this won't be misused! Accepted.
