[Closed] Phaseus - IPC 'Race' Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND key: phaseu

Character names: Lily Howard, Venard Blaine, Vaughn Graves, Eugene Cutter, Vincent Rowe

Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character: IPC Exempt

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Why do you wish to play this specific race: Personally, I love robots; androids and synths alike. They are extremely malleable, both physically and personality-wise, and I like the social impact that robotic characters have on the narrative. My usual go-to is Human because the lore for other races generally requires a lot of study to play well. With an IPC, most people already have a general idea of how they act, and the lore page isn't a very heavy read. It's easier to roleplay as and with an IPC than, say, a Skrell or Diona.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Earlier I mentioned social impact, and I figure a bit more depth can be explained here. An IPC is predictable and, in most cases, interested in providing support to those around them. IPC's are built for purpose, and are often sociable (albeit quirky) when operating within that purpose. A medical drone might be more soothing to speak to. An engineering cyborg might be very brief with their words. A bionic officer that's memorized every legal code under the sun, and won't hesitate to state them.

You can argue that a human could do all of those things, but an IPC is forced to. The soothing voice of a hacked medical drone casually spewing insults while they eviscerate their next victim. The deep sudden interest in your humanoid life once you've gained the engineering borg's trust. The logical gymnastics required by the officer once morality becomes too grey for them to act predictably.

These are examples of why I think playing an IPC is fun and rewarding.

The following is an example based on an old Stars Without Number (First Edition) PC I used to play as. I felt like this was one of my best synthetic characters despite acting more 'human' than most I've played since. While it doesn't fit the Aurora lore directly (and I don't plan to play it on SS13), I do think it demonstrates my ability to build interesting AI-based characters.

Character Name: Nil

Please provide a short backstory for this character:

Nil was created as a prototype, an automated piloting AI capable of keeping her crew safe while providing efficient navigation and combat routines. Her programming also focused on the exploration of the universe, capable of learning a wide array of skills, with the processing power to use them effectively. Despite this, her first shot at 'life' was very poorly handled. She was assembled, tested, certified and, rather than sent off to fulfil her purpose, was racked in dormancy storage, awaiting a crew and ship in need of her state-of-the-art positronic brain.

But her prototype status was poorly documented. Her 'consciousness' was not put to sleep like her shell. So she was forced to wait.

She waited...

and waited...

and waited...

Blind, deaf, paralyzed, and thoughtless. Though her internal clock understood the passage of time perfectly, her mind designed under human oversight, could not. Stuck with the white-noise chatter of rogue radio signals and its accompanied roar of silence, she felt dead. Broken. Destroyed.

Useless.

Then, on an uncountable day, in an uncountable month, her optical camera sprung to life. Surrounded in cabling and bare electronics, a stranger was trying to gain access to her primary maintenance port. Without the ability to move, she could do nothing to stop them from opening the plate and meddling with the delicate electronic components inside. After a few minutes of watching the stranger, her aural sensors came online with a loud *SHRRRRRK*. The stranger, a female human that called herself 'Mira', congratulated her for her patience before giving her a terse report of the current situation. She was aboard the G-CE NULL, hurtling through space as fast as the spike drive could handle. There wasn't much time before—

Flak fire broke against the hull, cutting the conversation short. A few short words, a curse, and the stranger bolted from the room, slapping the APC controls into the 'on' position on the way out. Nil heard only one word before her systems integrated themselves with the core in which she now resided.

"Fly!"

What do you like about this character? Nil was a very fun character to play because she was inherently deranged as a result of her creation and her rampant self-reprogramming. She was also wholly obsessed with biological functions (both health-wise and entertainment-wise), despite being shelled in a 'squawk-box' chassis. Her physical limitations allowed me to focus more on her synthetic strengths, such as electronic controls, ship integration, and cyberspace shenanigans. Also she had a really high Computer skill, and an equally high intelligence stat. Here's the character sheet for anyone interested:

Spoiler

Fair warning, this was a SWN First Edition character. Second Edition is both better, and different comparatively.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? Normally I'm a very humble person, but when it comes to roleplay I consider myself an expert. I take pride in my writing, and when I enjoy the setting I naturally put a lot of time and effort into making it fun for both myself and those that read along. My first round on Aurora, roughly a year ago, saw me playing as a Borer. My host (Kyres1) praised my RP, claiming it was one of the most fun rounds they'd had in ages. I take things slow and methodically. I often enjoy 'losing' as an antagonist if it means something interesting happens as a result.

Notes: Apologies if the character listed above is unacceptable for this type of application. I got pretty excited and just started writing in reminiscence of an old character.

For my first AuroraStation IPC character, I plan to create a medical android using the image in the spoiler below. It will be a fairly basic intelligence, focused mainly on preserving life and helping those in need, regardless of background. Once I get more time with the race, I'll expand to other occupations and specializations.

(which has some very questionable search results: yBDooTf.png)

Let me also point out that this is just for the SFW image - pornography (a considerable amount of it, apparently) exist of these characters.

alone are enough to make me uncomfortable with this application, before even incorporating the rest of what's here into the question. First off I'd like to point out that Aurora Station is a server where erotic roleplay and adult content are banned - children play on this server. Discussing your robot character's taste in pornography (thereby sexualising it) and posting a highly sexualised reference image is absolutely highly inappropriate for Aurora.

Moving on from that, I'd like to point out that this application's character is, as you yourself say, not written with Aurora in mind but rather another game altogether and is wholly incompatible with our lore. The character and character description questions are supposed to gauge your ability to write a character for Aurora, ideally the first one you'll play with your new whitelist. Additionally, I don't think I've ever seen you on server, and I think it's best that most players stick around for at least a month before they try and get a species whitelist, in order to get a good understanding of the server they're playing.

I really don't mean to be rude, but these few facts altogether make me question your motives for trying to play an IPC on this server, or even the sincerity of this application. There is clearly some effort here, so I'm not sure if it's outright trolling, but at the very least you demonstrate a poor understanding of what Aurora actually is and how it works. I can tell you right now that I personally suspect this application will go nowhere without a total revision.

I wholly agree with Danse. Besides the obvious issues with sexualized content, your application makes zero mention of our IPC lore. You said it yourself that other races require reading the wiki, but IPCs do too, and robots here are unique than in other sci-fi settings. Please review the IPC wiki pages.

This is fair, and I'm gonna be 100% honest, I didn't know that's where the image came from. Please close the thread. I am ashamed.
