BLUNTFORCE420 - IPC Application

BYOND Key: BLUNTFORCE420

Character Names: Tal Yahalom, Melvin Chang, assorted others

Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character: N/A

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I personally think it makes a lot of sense in the context of Aurora's setting that many jobs are delegated to cheaper, lower-maintenance IPCs, with a corresponding shift in design over time that results in a number of highly-specialized synthetics capable of performing these tasks better than humans could. With Tau Ceti being a hub for mega-corporations, it only makes sense that a meaningful portion of the workforce is synthetic, and I want to be able to portray and be a part of that.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

I don't believe that playing an IPC is too far removed from a human, aside from clear mechanical differences, since they are not only creations of humans but largely operate in environments alongside organics. This coupled with their ability to learn means that while they will never fully imitate a human, their work environment will shape them and their personalities a lot more than it would to your average workforce-aged human being. The primary distinction between the two, however, is a set of guidelines such as the self-preservation clause, that while technically limiting, are still open to interpretation and as such grants opportunities to diversify roleplay provided that there is an acceptable justification for the actions taken. In addition, the ability to mimic emotions can be molded to provide roleplay that is situationally implausible for a human. The blank slate from which synthetics are drawn allows for a very diverse selection of jobs, character archetypes, and personalities that may not be replicated by a similar human character. A lot of the more dystopian aspects of IPC life are plainly out in the open, such as laws about damaging property, adding potential for deeper, introspective stories regarding discrimination and sentience.

Character Name:

ZH-Pestle

Please provide a short backstory for this character (Approximately two paragraphs):

Part of a more recent generation of Zeng-Hu positronics built by Hephaestus Industries and finished on Oran, Pestle, named for an instrument historically associated with pharmacy practice, represents the latest and greatest in pharmaceutical positronic development. Sparked by exposure to Bishop frames, Zeng-Hu executives believed that there was hidden potential in their subsidiary's product. Qualities that made them excellent in service roles would hopefully translate well to working in a laboratory, where accuracy is paramount to patient safety, and by extension, continued revenue.

Utilizing the Bishop frame's capabilities for a much less elegant line of work than originally envisioned, Pestle is capable of quickly producing medication under duress with an incredibly small margin of error and acts as a valuable drug information resource for their fellow medical staff, possessing a wealth of knowledge that enables them to calculate complex dosage adjustments on the fly for any number of patients in a given wing. Other features found suitable for their line of work include automated medical record housekeeping--freeing up other personnel to conduct their own duties--and limited emotional emulation, along with multiple language comprehension to improve patient interactions.

Manufactured in series, IPCs of this line were quickly trained and educated on the intricacies of pharmacy practice, destined for employment in one of many Zeng-Hu medical facilities across the spur. Pestle saw early work in numerous clinics across Mendell City, where they were afforded a fair degree of autonomy with regards to providing medication, individualized counseling, and other miscellaneous services relevant to the practice. While models of this type were intended to potentially fully replace the organic pharmacist, observations and feedback over the course of a few years saw them better served as assistants to supplement existing infrastructure, for which the high cost of a Bishop frame was not justified. Further production was cancelled, though existing units were allowed to continue to work as clinical pharmacists for Zeng-Hu, taking shifts wherever necessary to fill gaps in care.

What do you like about this character? (Describe what you like about this character):

This character effectively fills the criteria I laid out in the first question. They are a highly-specialized IPC that brings good capability to the workforce with plenty of potential to grow as they interact with other characters on the Aurora, and really more feels like an extension of my pharmacist character, who I felt had a number of shortcomings with regards to limitations of the role. With the added quirkiness of being an IPC, I'd like to get a little more in-depth with it, either through poses, emotes, or hopefully some more personalized patient interaction roleplay.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

10/10.

I haven't actually RP'd with you that often despite seeing Tal around quite a bit. But, they seem to be a well-rounded character. I don't think there would be any issues with you acquiring a race whitelist for the robots.

IPCs don't learn trades usually, usually they just get chips stuck in their heads that download the knowledge into the brains. afaik

Thanks for applying! Before I ask any further questions, could you expand some more on Pestle's character?

It's important to remember that even though IPCs are shaped by humans, there are still differences, especially in the way they are designed, think, and are treated, that lead them to be different than humans.

Could you expand more on Pestle as a character? You've given us the backstory of the Pestle product line, but not Pestle itself.

I imagined they'd start with a base of knowledge and then work under supervision to make sure they understand the practice and receive supplemental training based on where the gaps are, if any. I mostly didn't want to go all-in on starter packs in case I ended up being wrong.

As far as their personal backstory goes, it'd probably be pretty mundane considering their line of work. They saw employment in numerous Zeng-Hu clinics in Mendell before beginning work aboard the Aurora, getting exposure to personalities from all walks of life. The types of activities they'd be participating in would be largely drug information-related and involve some degree of interaction, like counseling, as well as helping with medication management and using chemmasters to produce things. There's not a whole lot to be said about their time with Zeng-Hu, except that a few sour experiences with more outwardly racist individuals would definitely lead to them seeking work aboard a more permanent installation. Since they are a Bishop, the cost to buy their own freedom is extraordinary and it would be fairly unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Of course. I envision them to be empathetic and positive, as much as an IPC could be with a veneer of robotic-ness to it, all to improve patient receptiveness and comfort, especially considering the diversity of the patient population. As an overall, they're fairly proactive with regards to their job, and eager to work.

Yeah, I'm aware of this. The influence is undeniable, but at the end of the day they still are wholly different from your average human.
