Caelphon Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 The Republic of Biesel currently serves as our central setting, especially considering everyone lives and breathes within Tau Ceti. What do you think could be improved on or added? *New Gibson is receiving several revisions.
FlamingLily Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 The Republic's gun laws, to my knowledge, are totally missing, and I think it'd be a neat addition to know whether or not my chars are legally allowed to pack heat or not, as well as republic law and security in general, stuff like what Sol got with the SIIB etc (I'm assuming that's already on the burner, but it would be neat)

witchbells Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 More labor movements. We've seen the ugly side of every other faction, and it's time we saw Biesel's. We've gone in this direction of "conglomerate of megacorporations that control everything" and we get the impression that everyone is Okay With It. And yeah, I get that there are people fighting the companies, but we aren't seeing enough of it. Mass media control can only do so much. I want to see people trying to form communities outside of SCC control, I want to see protests (they'll call them rioters, let's be honest) and I want to see people in Mendell just fighting to make their home better off because they didn't win independence just for this. I want to see the SCC fight back by running smear campaigns against corporate dissidents, I want to hear about "ex-employees" who tried to unionize their workplace, only to be called some nasty name like a syndicate of mutineers. I'm tired of seeing the nice side of Biesel and just making assumptions about what goes on behind the curtain.
OffRoad99 Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Ahh, everyone's favorite Republic of Miranda I'd like to quote what Witchbells said in the post above. However, knowing that Biesel is essentially Eridani Federation 2.0, I'd like to see how bad the anti-corporate movements are treated. If the Eridani Federation treats anti-corporates like literal criminals (at least in my mind), in Biesel I suppose they won't be prosecuted but will be instead publicly shunned and discriminated. I don't think there's going to be a strong and widespread anti-corporate sentiment among Biesel, as nearly every sort of private business is, in one way or another, directly tied with a megacorporation and by fighting it, means you'll lose everything.
incognitojesus Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 What I believe could be worked on is pushing back the independence date of the Republic. As it stands now, you cannot have a character on-station that was born in the Republic when it was independent. I think this is a detriment to roleplay potential, and it's a tad unrealistic to have a nation go from the brink of economic insolvency to then exerting their influence on a galactic scale (a la intervention in Mictlan). I'd propose a soft retcon of the early history of the Republic, pushing it back by roughly ten years which would give the nation a greater believability and a reason for characters who grew up in the Republic to want it to succeed while also maintaining the feeling of being a "young Republic". It'd provide a sense of historicity to the lore and flesh out the period between Independence and lore events (~2458) with some history. Like for example, who even was Joseph Dorn before he became president? Were there any challenges to Biesel's sovereignty by the Sol Alliance claiming it to be within its sphere of influence prior to the first invasion? I'm just riffing now, but it's worth a try to flesh out the setting.

And you can get a lot of mileage out of that time. ICly it gives reason to question the republic and its identity, and reinvent itself while not being entrenched means you have valid reasons to not identity as a Biesellian by culture. It is a useful catchall that allows all characters and perspectives to be caught in. Oocly its useful narratively because it gives no identity a monopoly, easily handwaving the crazy diversity of cultural expression and not causing chaffing with the bi-monthly fads that sweep the playerbase in regards to character identity.
