Species you are applying to play: Vaurca

What color do you plan on making your first alien character: RGB 131, 41, 11 (Ta’Akaix’Zoleth’akeh Zo’ra brood)

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: hyezz

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

Vaurcae are one of the most alien species on Aurora, their lore alternates from fairly mysterious to beyond the comprehension of other races. Vaurcae are mechanically very diverse and have interesting interactions with other Vaurcae. A notable feature of the species is their confirmation of an afterlife. Should an average Vaurca die, a special implant installed into their body from their time as a larva will be extracted and have their consciousness uploaded into a virtual reality state. There they can theoretically live forever, which I find pretty funny considering their body will probably die in only a couple decades.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biologically: Vaurcae are a species of insectoid mostly humanoid arthropods bearing sulfer-based blood. Appearing in many forms across different hives, Vaurcae are very diverse in their appearance and biology, each Vaurca of a different brood even having a totally different carapace coloration. By far the most notable thing of Vaurcae is their exigency for phoron, as they require it to breath. The disadvantage of breathing phoron of course being that all other gasses are toxic to the species. Vaurcae have mandibles which do not allow for complex speech, to communicate with one another they possess antennae atop their heads. These antennae can emit and detect pheromones, complex scents let out as messages by other Vaurcae. To speak the language of aliens, a unique albeit often low-quality augment was invented. Allowing Vaurcae to speak many languages. Almost every Vaurcae form is represented by two letters, KA, ZA, RA, TA and type D.

KA are the workers and by far the most common form, seen both bipedal and quadrupedal. Workers have three fingered claws with ranging average heights. These forms are also typically fitted with extremely hardened exoskeletons, assisting them in sometimes several days of EVA. Workers are also known for their avoidance of violence.

ZA are the warriors of each hive, they appear in forms of a hexapod, quadruped and biped, each named BC, BB and BA respectfully. Warriors, totally opposite to workers, are not passive at all. Making them well suited for combat. Their exoskeletons are also typically less thickened than Workers, allowing only a few hours of EVA.

RA being the newest form developed by Vaurcae, only last year. RA can be easily described as industrialistic workers, being much larger at eight to ten feet tall with huge, crowbar-like arms. These forms do not vary at all from their original design and have a distinct look. Known as Bulwark, these forms are defensive fighters, never attacking and only defending themselves and those in their nearby vicinity, escaping when given an option to.

TA or Breeders often seen as diplomats of queens are the only fertile of the Vaurca population, aside from the queens themselves. TA are also used to fertilize eggs and even become replacement or new lesser queens should the hive expand to a point of needing such.

Type D the strangest of the Vaurcae, biomechanical supercomputers used for calculating huge amounts of data and managing pieces of the Virtual Reality network. These Vaurcae can live for centuries and typically do. Type D are bound and never appear as akaix, despite their immense brain size, they are used only for calculating and are often looked at as machinery rather than beings.

These do not include the forms of the lii'dra have, as the full extent of their capabilities is currently unknown.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mechanically: Vaurcae are extremely capable, having natural insulation on their claws, protecting them from shock, with warriors holding huge mandibles able to tear their opponents to shreds (except if you do you'll get fired) and with their hivenet, allowing them to communicate over large distances with some flicks of their antennae. Vaurcae are able to enter total vacuums without issue and space themselves- mechanically forever.

Vaurcae require phoron to breath, without it they suffocate fairly quickly, along with this need for phoron comes their inability to heal over time. Instead requiring medical attention to heal their wounds. Their advanced eyes grant them night vision, allowing them to see in almost no-light environments. Because of their sensitive eyes, however, they are sensitive to light and can be rendered blind by only a few flashes. Their very alien nature also makes them less resistant to bacteria appearing around the Orion Spur, taking increased toxin damage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Culturally: Vaurca culture is very separated yet also the same. Each hive showing slightly different mannerisms. Authority is a very important value in Vaurcesian society, loyalty to ones Hive is instinctual and disloyalty is deemed a defect. A notable feature of Vaurcae I have not yet touched on are the difference between bound and unbound, through intentional planning, a Vaurca can be born 'bound' or 'unbound.' To be bound is to have most of your brain removed, your body augmented and your purpose defined to assist. A bound is essentially equipment to be used by unbound, who are designed for individuality. Unbound are still loyal to their hives but have the same capacity of emotion, intelligence and mind as a Human. Bound are often treated poorly but not discriminated, their purpose to the hive is recognized.

Conflict amongst Vaurcae is rare if not entirely unseen unless the two are actively at war. While Vaurcae can banter with one another, combat never occurs in workers. When it does occur in warriors, it usually happens within Virtual Reality, real combat would be a waste to their respective hives. While disputes within reality can be handled, often times on the hivenet, thoughts of other Vaurcae may disturb or frustrate an individual. This can be suppressed but as a last resort, it is possible to have the voices blocked with the assistance of a TA. Death in Vaurcesian society is often not feared as there is promise of the afterlife, however death results in the loss of a body which is a loss for the Hive. For this reason, along with instinctual survival, death is still avoided. In conflict, honor is held close by Vaurcae. Kidnapping an unbound, killing a queen or taking and even destroying neural sockets are all heavily frowned upon by each hive.

Xakat’kl’atan is a title given to Vaurcae, typically after death. This title is of immense honor, something akin to a celebrity title. A Vaurca known as Xakat’kl’atan is often used as an advisor to a queen, a teacher to a newborn or training or generally just a figure of great authority. Rarely, this title can be given to living Vaurcae. There are many taboos in Vaurcesian culture, restricting mouth to mouth contact, covering the mandibles, referencing trophallaxis and several other minor notes have their meanings, some of these are tied into Vaurca religions, which are very notable.

Hive Pantheon: The belief that their lesser and greater queens are nothing unlike deities, referring to Virtual Reality as a literal paradise. This religion appears in two schools of thought, classical and modern pantheon. The classical pantheon being the appreciation and love of a queen and her ability to perpetuate life. The classical pantheon is less of a religion and more of a biological instinct, in a way. The modern pantheon shares many similarities but is ultimately more systematized, spanning across every hive.

Preimminence: The religion of a god or goddess, made up of Vaurcae. This being does not exist in the religion but could exist, should every Vaurca find their shape within the being, the goddess or god would form. This does not only include Vaurcae, however. This is one of the only Vaurcesian religions documented to believe aliens exist, hundreds of thousands of years ago, believing that these aliens too would need to align for such an event as a deities forming to take place. Shapers, similar to a priest of another religion, dedicate their lives to assist others in finding their shape. These Shapers often wear robes and helmets to obscure their hive affiliation, believing it may cause issues when assisting another in finding their shape.

Pilot Dream: The theory that existence is but a simulation and the place beyond the simulation, itself, a simulation. The believers attest their evidence as the existence of Cephalons or Type D. Believers of the Pilot Dream set their goal to re-create a simulated, compressed universe to continue the cycle of simulated reality. The Mother Dream is a branched religion of the Pilot Dream, exclusively followed by the K'lax. This belief follows the existence of the aforementioned simulations but with the change that they can advance through these simulations by being efficient and useful to their Hive. Believing that the mother K'lax will allow them to advance forward.

Character Name: Ka'Akaix'Dilia Zo'ra

Please provide a short backstory for this character:

Born 2460 to the Zo'ra hive and to Ta’Akaix’Zoleth’akeh's brood on Caprice. During its time in VR training, Dilia paid great attention to the teachings of Xakat’kl’atan ’Iotiex, while also taking interest in various xeno religions and Vaurcesian beliefs. It began to research Preimminence, finding no issue with other religions and instead believing them to be necessary for a xeno to find its shape. It studied great philosophies and ancient documents of Preimminence, believing it no coincidence that the beliefs predictions of aliens existing coming true. When leaving its VR training, Dilia kept a great appreciation for all sapient beings and believes it direly important for all Vaurcae and other xenos find their shapes. This was Dilia's purpose. Augmented and equipped with scent blocking robes, the fairly early to leave VR Vaurca began teaching and shape finding. Dilia had a great appreciation for history, as taught by the Xakat’kl’atan who it followed so greatly. This appreciation of history aligns with its Queens beliefs, this granted Dilia the ability to leave Caprice.

Travelling across Tau Ceti to Biesel, Dilia worked toward converting Vaurcae to Preimminence, assisting xenos in finding their passion, their destiny and otherwise teaching of Zo'ra history and normalizing Vaurcae in the aliens society. Dilia showed fairly average income with little failure, converting several Vaurcae and gaining some alien friends. Moving to Phoenixport, Dilia watched its productivity slowly drop over the time of a year stationed there. It seemed the people were too busy involving themselves in corporate politics to care about Dilia's teachings. Dilia began to develop a disdain for Einstein Engines, being quite suddenly directed to employ with Nanotrasen soon after it was directed to leave Phoenixport and move to Mendell City, district 3. It was moved around from station to station, chapels aboard stations, vessels, cities, all sponsored by Nanotrasen. Teaching the aliens and becoming fairly known. When satisfied with how well it had taught some populations, Dilia decided to employ far away from Biesel, start somewhere that needed education, guidance. It employed aboard the NSS Aurora.

Describe what you like about this character: While fairly young, leaving VR training early, Dilia is experienced in history, religion and general understanding of xenos. Dilia is a bland character, with little interesting about it, it is aware of this. It knows its purpose is nothing magnificent in Preimminence but is welcoming to its humble purpose of guiding others.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?: 8/10 izz good

Notes: I couldn't find a nice way to squeeze in that Vaurca eat k'ois and what k'ois is. So. That's here now.

EXPECTED QUESTIONS:

"What does Dilia think of the RA design theft:" Dilia has little opinion on the theft, more lives are more roles to fill for the Preimminence to be fulfilled.

"What are Dilia's opinions on other hives:" Dilia views all sapient beings as pieces of the God to be formed, viewing all Hives as equals.

"What are Dilia's opinions on the lii'dra?:" While accepting that they do indeed play a role in the formation of the God, Dilia also believes that it is within the roles of everyone else to exterminate the Lii'dra, as their hostile nature could doom us all.

"What is Dilia's favorite food:" Izz vhoron rock candy.

Looks good overall, but I do have a few questions.

1. Could you explain rather what makes it unique to play as a Vaurca? Your reply was too long and quoted much of the wiki; while we expect you to read it, we would like to hear it with your own words. Just something simple, what do you think you'd find unique (not mechanically) when playing a Vaurca character.

2. The chaplain position is a weird one in a way because it's hard to see how it fits in-world —do they just get contracts or is it more or a one-time freelance position? Regardless of that, why did Dilia move to Phoenixport? Does it currently live there?

3. Just a heads up, I know the wiki refers to the Preimminence deity as God or Goddess, but it's probably better to say “Goddess” as basically every other Vaurca divinity is female. Quick Preimminence question, though: How does Dilia feel about the mixed opinion that's still had by some regarding the Preimminence?

I think I'd find interactions with non-Vaurcae the most unique and interesting, their incredibly alien nature and low amount of whitelisted players makes less and less crew see them often. Making them more alien to the crew. I've seen countless interactions between Vaurcae and other species, even been that other species before and had a blast. I'm eager to see if I can try those same interactions from the other side. While I find interactions with xenos the most interesting, I'm also eager to speak to other Vaurcae in-game. The hivenet is a very versatile way of communicating and allows for some very fun roleplay opportunities. As a last and most obvious thing I'm eager to try is, why I created Dilia the way I did. Even though they are a fairly small portion of Vaurcae lore, I really enjoy the concepts of their religions and hope to make characters following each one.

Dilia works on contracts, signing to work with a corporation or property where specific religions are preached or where guidance is offered. As for moving to Phoenixport, it wanted to ease into its teachings of others, gradually taking up more and more challenging tasks like larger chapels or more populated areas, after spending some time working freelance between places on Biesel without any specific residence, it happened to be within Pheonixport and settled there for some time. Believing it to be a good start at its career. It was absolutely incorrect in this decision and soon learned this, deciding to leave some time after. It currently lives within Mendell City District 3.

Thanks for the heads up! Dilia has great comprehension of racism, xenophobia and hatred of others because of their cultures. It has studied history of most species (mostly humans and vaurca) and accepts that changing ones opinion is difficult. It feels neutral toward the skeptical or otherwise negative opinions held against the Preimminence and almost enjoys the challenge of arguing its validity. Despite it being its job to convert those to the religion or otherwise guide those to find their shapes, Dilia is fairly accepting to those who refuse to find their shape. Believing that is part of the great process of finding yourself and where you fit.
