Ion Law Spicing Feedback Thread

Quite easy: it would not mean anything to basically everyone that is playing, it would be almost equivalent of using a random name generator and pick the first thing that comes up for the medicine name, and the zeng-hu one I don't believe has anything to do with spicing up the tajaran icly, considering as far as I am aware they directly employ them too.

I fail to see how a German pharmaceutical company from 1863 and a horse deworming medication are somehow more meaningful for tajara. You have been advised to change it and it by staff and it will not be put in until you do so, per Cybs.

Sure: they are both associated with animals, which the player can then incorporate into the background as knowing, eg. by having heard some rrrrrrrracist human use it before, or otherwise feign ignorance on the whole topic with said character, at the player discretion, without the need to search around what it is it supposed to mean; it's something that makes sense to the player on an OOC level, and is likely to have been used as a rrrrrrracist insult on an IC level, thus perfectly fitting the purpose. As a sidenote that has nothing to do with this whole thing, ivermectin is not used only on horses, it's a dewormer for some type of worms that is used for various animals and is also approved in various parts of the world for said use for humans, I believe in the US too; if you have a cat or dog and it ever had eg. tapeworms, it's fairly likely your veterinary gave your animal ivermectin for those, and no, it's not effective nor approved for viral infections treatment, despite what some facebook "informed and concerned mom"'s post might say

i don’t really like any of these. They feel like something you’d find on an LRP server. They’re memey and I can’t see how they would better the round.

On top of the issues already raised, a lot of the laws are badly written and are either totally grammatically incorrect or have very stilted wording. Some of them are so unclear that I don't think you could reasonably expect the AI player to know what to do. From a quick glance through the list I think you'd have to get a native speaker to rewrite about half of them, because when you're dealing with things like AI where precise wording is important you can't really afford for any ambiguity.

Yea, @GeneralCamo offered to copywrite them once the PR reach the final form, I am not a native english speaker and I wrote them well into the 30 hours of being awake, but they will (hopefully) be well structured and grammatically correct before they will be merged.

Well, hopefully they won't be merged even if their grammar and wording is touched up because I don't think they're very good. They don't fit the server tone, the attempts at humour either fall flat or are overly referential to be funny on their own merit, and while I appreciate that new ion laws could be very fun to see around I think you've missed the mark so hard there's no fixing this PR.

Sorry to double down like this, but I wanted to make it clear on rereading this that the grammar issues were far from my only concern with this.

As others have stated, personally I don't personally like the idea of adding more ion laws, at least currently.

The callous response of "well it's just a game, they need to get over it" to people saying that some of the laws would make players uncomfortable leaves a bad taste in general regarding these.

I said that I don't know what to say if a borg or AI encouraging your character to date another makes someone uncomfortable, as it's something you'd intuitively consider to be generally perceived as funny. Additionally, I also said that if that makes you uncomfortable for some reason, you should say so OOC and the other player would be expected (at least from me) to drop it. That is literally the contrary of "you need to get over it".

What it also means is that it's something that, in my opinion, should be left up to the players affected and is not in itself an argument that could be made a priori; granting people the highest degree of freedom unless compelling arguments mandate us otherwise is the preferable option, and likewise limiting it on the basis of an assertion that an unspecified amount of people might be uncomfortable with it even while having an option to opt out is an epistemological annihilation, as that argument could be easily asserted for literally anything (eg. having guns in game) and would afford no recourse.

With that said, this thread has now reached around 10 people not liking either in part or as a whole the new ion laws, which on the basis of the only statistic that I have access to (the borgs poll) constitute around 5% of the active monthly playerbase, and I consider it statistically significant enough to draw a trend and concede the failure of the user acceptance of the project in its current form.

What I'd like to do, would require the ability for active players (not just those that use the forum regularly) to be informed, be able to vote and suggest them, as well as changes in general, but it would need prerequisite projects and discussions for the tools to enable it. As the meme says, I am limited by the technology of my time, so that would need to be put on hold until the necessary tools are in place to enable such a thing, which would (hopefully) be a more powerful instrument for other projects and suggestions too.

The PR will be closed, this project can be archived, and my personal thank you to everyone who has contributed to the discussion.
