Character Complaint - Riona Kelly

This is more a complaint against general character behavior rather than any one round in particular, although I will be providing excerpts from particularly egregious rounds to help paint a more complete picture on why I'm drafting this complaint. Put plainly, Riona Kelly is a character that I think most medical players can attest is concerning in the absolute least. While I know that not having knowledge of brainmed on a mechanical basis is not in and of itself a problem but it is more the refusal to learn and insist that your way is "better" while in the same breath throwing other characters under the bus to cover your own ass to the point of outright lying to a head of staff to craft a scenario in which you were in the right and the other responder, in this case Jota Bolaji, was to shoulder all the blame for the death of a patient. 

Note, these screen captures were taken from a round that took place on the 5th of June, at approximately 1500-1600 CST. 

This round in question was a merc round, the patient being referred to was a mercenary who had attempted to escape via the Intrepid but was gunned down by security in short order. Bolaji, played by Sheeplets, attempted to affix said mercenary with a stabilizer harness to maintain his pulse and breathing. As Bolaji was fitting the harness to the mercenary, Riona Kelly saw it fit to more or less snatch the body out of his arms and drag them to medical, which ended in the mercenaries death. This is not the first instance of Kelly snatching a body without treatment and running them direct to medical, usually resulting in greater harm coming to them overall. However, the most egregious part of this exchange is the aftermath, in which Kelly shifted all of the blame from themselves to Bolaji to both the captain and the chief medical officer in that particular round.

A similar incident occurred two days ago in which Kelly blamed the engineering team on shift for the death of a xenobotanist due to a phoron leak, stating that engineering took far too long to respond despite being on scene before Kelly. Additionally, Kelly was not wearing any protective equipment to respond to a phoron leak, leading to the atmospheric technician having to more or less do Kelly's job for her in retrieving the body of the xenobotanist who had long since expired. I unfortunately do not have any screenshots or logs of this particular round but I feel the point has been made regardless.

Ultimately what this character complaint boils down to is that I, and I'm sure many others in medical feel that Riona Kelly as a character has only served to provide a lot of headache due to her refusal to take advice in character while actively attempting to paint other characters in a bad light as a way of making up for her own short comings. I don't find it conducive to a enjoyable time both in and out of character when one dreads having to work with this character and I'm sure plenty of others feel the same way. 

Did you attempt to adminhelp the issue at the time? If so, what was the known action taken by administration/moderation?: No as I was not in the round at this time, only receiving accounts of it after the fact.

Since I've been namedropped in this complaint I suppose I should chime in.

I regularly played a First Responder in Medical for the past three years. I consider myself decently knowledgeable, and believe I have a firm understanding of how the department works. In that time I've had dozens upon dozens of FR partners and through them I've experienced both the best and worst that this community has to offer.

That being said? Riona Kelly is without a doubt one of, if not outright the single worst person that I have ever worked with. Period.

In the past I've played with people who were incompetent to a degree that it came at the expense of the people they try to save during rounds, whether due to a lack of understanding and knowledge or because they just can't wrap their head around things. And you know what, that's okay. At the end of the day this is a game and everyone plays here to have fun. They're just doing their best, and they make an effort to learn and do better. She isn't one of those people.

Sat squarely on the left-most end of the Dunning Kruger bell curve, Kelly is an overly hostile, inept, and frankly childish narcissist who refuses to ever take responsibility for her own mistakes. It's all about her, always. She's the "protagonist" of the round and she just can't work with people. At all. She refuses to cooperate with anyone. If she fumbles and drops the ball she makes it a point to blame anyone other than herself. This frequently comes at the expense of others, namely the people who she gets killed and the people she throws under the bus to save her own skin.

We've tried to teach her, and it's not for lack of experience. She's always here. Kelly plays upwards of five rounds a day. She readies for just about every single round in a given day. She just will not listen. She's been confronted before by other people and they've only been met with hostility and rudeness.

Despite this, she seems to be under the grand delusion that she's the smartest person in any given room. She possesses a massively overinflated ego that won't let her be wrong. The most intelligent response to constructive criticism that I've seen come from her has been along the lines of "Go fuck yourself", "fuck you", or "fuck you, I don't care". To the point where having observed this sort of behavior across Sparta's other characters I'm convinced there's absolutely no "character" to speak of. She doesn't mistreat the people around her as some kind of well written character flaw. There's fantastic examples of characters who are jerks in constructive ways that enable good roleplay. This isn't the case. I'm one hundred percent convinced that Sparta is full on OOC-in-IC and treats people like absolute shit for the sake of it.

I mean, I don't really know what else to say. Every single time I've seen Riona Kelly's name on a crew manifest I've had to talk myself into actually joining just because I haven't wanted to put up with her attitude or her negligence. Her playing here turns that into a conscious decision of whether or not it's even worth it. She makes rounds utterly miserable and I don't even think she possesses the maturity and self-awareness to realize it and make any meaningful changes to her conduct. I've spoken to multiple people who've expressed the same sentiment, and I think it's gone on for far too long. Enough is enough.

I am sorry that I have been causing so many issues for you and other players with my character, Riona Kelly. I am open to learning and working on my mistakes. I genuinely did not realize the frustrations anyone had with me. If you would like to talk about any of my actions and helping me find a plan to resolve them, feel free to message me on discord.

Hey there, so @CampinKiller and I talked things over about this for a while. Although we don’t think any of this was malicious at all, we do believe that @Sparta9001, your performance as a First Responder is unsatisfactory to the degree of causing issues with the natural flow of rounds. This is not something that cannot be improved but the First Responder role is a difficult and chaotic one more often than not. Because of this, we are going to be placing a 2-week ban on you playing First Responder, during which we ask that you spend time playing Riona Kelly (or a new character) as a First Responder Intern in order to better understand the role and the systems at play here. 

This ban will not expire automatically, but after that 2-week period is up (25 June 2023), you are welcome to make a Ban Appeal and we'll move forward from there.

Many players are more than happy to help show people their “tips and tricks” when it comes to playing their job, and it is strongly advised that you sincerely take this advice from them. No one here wants anyone to fail, so it’s just a process of getting yourself more familiar with how things should be done in the role you play. This is especially the case in a role that has such a steep learning curve as First Responder.

We also suggest that you consider joining the "Department Hub" Discord server which can be found in the "affiliated_groups" channel on the Main Discord server. Although it is seldom used, it serves as a good place to ask specific questions that you might have.
