meep109 - Skrell Deputy Application

Recommended Posts

Ckey/BYOND Username: meep109
Position Being Applied For: Skrell Deputy
Have you read the Lore Team Rules and Regulations wiki page?: Yes
Past Experiences/Knowledge: None besides the proposal which I've just submitted
Examples of Past Work: I made a PR for the Skrell Consular Pistol (yet to be approved)

A proposal for a new piece of Skrell lore. It can be about anything, but it must be something that could be reasonably added to the wiki. The proposal must be provided as a google doc with legible formatting.
Making Weishii a more "looked down upon" religion and giving further history to it!

Why you want to join the team and how you plan to spend your time as a Skrell deputy outside of assigned projects.
I want to join the team because Skrell is an awesome species that I get so many ideas from and I would love to contribute to Skrell lore. Besides assigned projects I could probably try and code in cool Skrell flavor items. I want more stuff like jyalra!!

Your thoughts about Skrell lore, both good and bad. You should also mention what you would like to change or expand upon.
I think Skrell lore has awesome concepts, with a hyper-advanced authoritarian government and a unique culture that really can't be replicated in other species, especially with psionics. However, sometimes I feel as if these concepts could be used more. I want the Federation to be less isolationist while highlighting its weaknesses so players don't view it as this totally infalliable behemoth. One part of this which is super important to me is making sure that the Tup is maybe lessened in power in lore. I'd like it to be still powerful, but I've seen some things happen in Skrell lore which might have inadvertently given the Tups a more mystical reputation then I'd want to see in Skrell lore. I'd like to expand the Traverse mainly if I get accepted. It is sort of lacking in some parts which I really want to flesh out, especially with the lore arc.
A mention of any useful skills you might have (coding, spriting, graphic design, can be anything). Not particularly important for the role so don't worry if you can't put anything down here.
Coding: sorta? I can do some basic coding but I cannot code in really complicated things like whole reworks.

So, I've RPed and talked with you a lot and I definitely think you have a good knowledge of Skrell lore, as well as passion for the material, and I think you'd make a good addition to the lore team. That being said, obligatory questions.

1. You talk about the Federation being an isolationist gigafuckchad. Are there any specific changes you have in mind for reflecting changes in the Fed's isolationism and highlighting its weaknesses as mentioned, aside from nerfing the Tupkala?

2. How do you feel about Skrell outside the Federation such as those on Mictlan, in the Starlight Zone on Biesel or on Ouerea? Is there anything in particular you'd like to do with non-Federation Skrell as a member of the lore team, or anything that you think should be changed about them?

3. If you were tasked with writing a Skrell event arc to be run on the SCCV Horizon, what would you do? Doesn't have to get too specific, just a general overview.

4. What do you think is the worst part of current Skrell lore, and what if anything would you do to improve it? If it's a past event, would you want to retcon it or just leave it alone?

I think having the Federation go through economic troubles due to the phoron shortage and the like would force it to open up its economies to possibly more megacorporate and Solarian influence, which could certainly shift the power dynamic in the system. Especially with the troubles in the Traverse, which is one of the big resource providers to the Fed, the isolationist stance especially on economics certainly isn't sustainable. I want to highlight this. While the article arc involving the Traverse. does highlight weaknesses, I'd like the weaknesses to be COMPLETELY wide-ranging, as in it effects even the most highest quality of life core systems. So using economics would be a good way to achieve this, in my opinion.

2. How do you feel about Skrell outside the Federation such as those on Mictlan, in the Starlight Zone on Biesel or on Ouerea? Is there anything in particular you'd like to do with non-Federation Skrell as a member of the lore team, or anything that you think should be changed about them?
I love Skrell outside the Federation- it adds an interesting dynamic to their host nations and seeing what is a mostly isolated alien culture in the Fed get changed heavily through syncretism and influence from outside sources is just so engaging to me. Personally I'd like to see the fabled "drylist" have effects everywhere. Maybe urban myths pop up in the Starlight Zone of Skrell "men in black" stalking known subversives, or the younger generation of Mictlani skrell being more anti-Federation in nature. Of course, I don't want the Federation influence in the little Skrell enclaves dotted around the Spur to get /too/ overbearing, but I want Skrell outside the Federation who are anti-Federation in nature to have a little bit of paranoia and not think they're completely "safe" from the hands of the Federation.

3. If you were tasked with writing a Skrell event arc to be run on the SCCV Horizon, what would you do? Doesn't have to get too specific, just a general overview.
I'd LOVE to visit Tattuqig. The planet is one of the most unique in Skrell lore and if I had to choose any planet that the Horizon could visit in Fed space, it'd have to be Tattuqig. Perhaps a shocking development is made in the many tribal villages created by an unknown alien species dotted around the planet, or the true origin of the fog crawlers are revealed! Generally just exploring around Tattuqig and discovering its many secrets sounds like the Skrell arc I'd love to write
4. What do you think is the worst part of current Skrell lore, and what if anything would you do to improve it? If it's a past event, would you want to retcon it or just leave it alone?
For me it has to be Lyrii. The fact that there's a new Skrellian AI that came from the same roots of  Glorsh is a cool concept, but I felt like it's been three years since it happened and I personally can't see many things to do with it. I'd want to move away from that conflict and move more towards internal conflict in the Fed and Traverse.. I'd likely retcon it and say that Lyrii was deleted in the conflict or removed. However, I wouldn't touch the rest of the Warbling arc- from what I've heard of it, it sounds like an entertaining arc that contributed positvely to Skrell lore in the time it was written.

Hi, thanks for applying.

So far I've noticed a lot of your notes about Skrell lore are already in line with what we've been trying to do with current and relatively recent developments, which is good since it shows that there won't be a massive point of contention in the general direction we currently want to take the species in.

I've just got back home and I've not read your lore proposal in-depth (yet) but from skimming it, the vast majority of this is good and with edits/reviews could easily be added to the wiki. Your proposal's also given me some inspiration for additional things related to religion lore that we can work on.

With all that said, I do have some questions:

  1. How do you feel about working on non-Skrell lore-related things? We're expected to contribute in some form to general lore projects, is that something you think you'll have an issue with?
  2. To add to the first question, how do you feel about cross-species lore and collaborating with other species teams on that front?
  3. What would you consider your strengths and weaknesses in relation to writing and working in a team?
  4. Feel free to say no to this, but if you didn't make it onto the team, would you be willing to make a lore canonisation app using your proposed piece of Skrell lore so that it could still be used by the team? You'll still be included in the process if you want to be, but if you'd rather not have us use your work or be involved in the process in this case then that's absolutely fine.

1.
I would be actually super excited about working with other lore teams! I think cooperating with other lore teams in general lore arcs sounds like so much fun. I have absolutely no qualms with doing it.
2.
Cross-species lore is some of my favorite lore on the server. Mictlan and Ouerea as an example always has interested me, and Europa has one of my (personal) favorite skrell lore in its wikipage.

3.
I think some of my weaknesses might be my (somewhat) packed schedule that might not allow me to respond to stuff as quicky as I'd like, and I think I'd struggle a bit with letting go of certain things that I'm writing, However, I think the team aspect of it like bouncing ideas off of each other would allow me to get inspired much more often compared to being an non-lore writer submitting lore canon applications. I usually don't take things personally especially in a setting like this where everyone just wants to have fun and write crazy stuff.

4.
I'd 100% submit the proposal I just made, but I think my motivation to make more lore would probably be a little less compared to if I was a lorewriter, due to the teamwork aspect of it as I said before.

For Dionae in the Federation, I'd really like to emphasize the negative aspects of being a Diona in the Fed- perhaps talk about how a Teritary Diona was so restricted their nymphs inadvertently starved? I'd also like to expand more on Diona not in the Core System, really most of the lore page sort of talks about Spiral Gardens and the like, stuff you'd probably mostly find in the core systems, but how is life like out in the frontier, where there's more likely then not more looser restrictions on who you can take blood from, resulting towards some more anti-Fed attitudes found among the Diona of the Traverse? I'd also like some form of conflict to come from the EUM's member states as to their unfair treatment of low social credit Diona, but that would be more Diona Lore Team, I would think. Besides that, I think Diona Fed lore is awesome, and I love how integrated they are out of every state in the Spur- at their peak credit score, Diona can probably have the best treatment out of anywhere in the Spur, but they can also be super restricted, and I love the "highs and lows" aspect of that
