Sneakyranger Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 (edited) Instead of from date of slot creation, have the timer for a character's name becoming unchangeable start from the first round they are played on, ghost or otherwise. It makes it easier to work on a character concept over a long period of time this way and from my view has no loss of the intended effect from the name lock. Sometimes I revisit character concepts and find that the name I selected at the start was not appropriate for the character I am trying to make. Since the above may be a bit poorly written (it sounds overly complex to me), I will express it in simple terms: Currently: Character slot names become unchangeable after a period of time starting from when the name is input and saved. Proposal: Character slot names become unchangeable after a period of time (roughly a week, how it is now) starting from the first round the character is played. Carver Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 I’d rather a hybrid. First week after a slot is first played is when it’s locked in. Sometimes I’ll do a round as a newly designed character and realize the name isn’t quite right, having to remake the slot and lose the name I’m changing from forever would be cumbersome in this case. 1 Quote
dessysalta Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Agreed with Carver. The grace period placed upon naming is so people can have second thoughts or reconsiderations (take, for instance, someone mistakenly playing an izweski or other Hegemony consul, and then realizing it'd be more fun if they were from a different place on Moghes, Dominia, etc.) like I've done several times. That said, I'd also recommend that a system change take place that makes it so simply entering a name and then changing it to something else doesn't bar you from that name. I once tried to change "Gevurah" to "GEVURAH," and it wouldn't let me, so I had to contact a headmin. Having that limit only apply after the grace period has finished/after the character's been played at least once would be a much better fit. Quote
Fluffy Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 I am not aware of what is the reason the name is locked in, can anyone enlighten me on why this was done? Quote

I figure it's a glitch pertaining to using old/dead character names; unsure if it persists after the recent character name update. Swapping from one name to another in character selection probably tricks the client into thinking you're attempting to reuse a dead character's name (hence why I couldn't change it back to GEVURAH after I tried to make it GEVURA). What do you think I'm proposing? Genuine and non-sarcastic answer because if I'm reading your reply correctly this is exactly what I want. Quote

The reason is that we have had people receive CCIA actions on their characters, then delete those characters and re-create them with the same name. We have also had some people that regularly renamed one of their slots and who would then end up with ccia actions / security incidents from the previous names on that character) In addition, quite a few things are based on the character id now adays. Preventing the same name from being re-used discourages behaviour that breaks that char-id-link. Quote
