Crescentise Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 As it stands, lockers just aren't realistic. You go inside, and you can see everything as normal. That's mindblowingly silly for obvious reasons. When you get inside, you should have vastly reduced visual range. You should still be able to see a tiny bit, due to the slits on the locker. So, say, the range you'd get when under anaesthesia, or if you wanted more - as if you were wearing welding goggles. Hopefully this wouldn't be hard to implement.
jackfractal Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 It would seriously limit traitors and other ne'er-do-wells. Hiding in a locker is one of the few ways to escape the AI. This would not be a small change.

jackfractal Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Knowing when someone else is in the room That's the big one. Lockers are a strategic part of antag play.
keinto Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Knowing when someone else is in the room It's still irrelevant to hiding from the AI. You can't know whether the AI is watching you, unless you abuse a certain bug. Only way you would know is to listen carefully for footsteps, doors, and people talking, which would make it more realistic.
Frances Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Only way you would know is to listen carefully for footsteps, doors, and people talking, which would make it more realistic. It's realistic, but would it be balanced? One big advantage of hiding in lockers is that you get the effect of surprise on somebody walking up to you (since you can see them approaching). If being hidden in a locker essentially made you blind, then the effect would be completely reversed - you wouldn't know somebody was next to you until they opened the locker themselves.
jackfractal Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Because you're blowing things up and taunting people about it on the radio? Being in a locker prevents the AI from jumping to you directly from radio speech. If you're a known antag, it's one of the only safe places to talk on the radio from. Also there's the whole Gameplay > Aesthetics > Realism thing. Just because something is realistic, doesn't mean it's the right decision. I'm not saying it's a terrible idea, I'm saying it has implications beyond just 'this doesn't make sense'.
SgtSammac Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Jack. What does changing someone's line of sight have to do with the AI jumping to your radio transmission...?
jackfractal Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Nothing. But it does change gameplay. People hide in lockers to escape pursuit and to avoid the AI. Limiting their sight will change that dynamic. It will become less optimal. Are lockers overly optimal now? Is there a good gameplay reason to do this? In my experience on this server, antags, especially lone antags, who are the ones who would use lockers, are extremely ineffective. Traitors and changelings are almost always caught, and caught quickly. I have a feeling that taking away one of their tactics will just make that more likely.

It doesn't make sense that using welding goggles limits your vision but shutting a locker with you inside does not in any way affect your vision. At least SOMETHING should happen. If you really want more vision, then make it at least as limited as wearing welding goggles; you will have more than enough reaction time to see someone walking up to your locker.
