BYOND Key: Sleepy Wolf

Character name: Kaneki Yang

Item name: White Mask

Why is your character carrying said item to work? My character has severe burns, so he needs this mask to communicate due to his vocal cords being charred. It also helps him breathe, and hides some of the burn marks on the left side of his face.

Item function(s): Worn on the 'Head (Mask)' slot. Enables him to breathe easily and speak robotically.

Item description: A white mask, covering the left side of a persons face. It has a lung/voice-assistance tube going down the persons mouth.

Item appearance: http://gyazo.com/3e5b10b58d460f54ecb71d99d7197b54

Additional comments:

EDIT: So I heard that there's an already coded voice helper thing, so if you just change the sprite would that help? Or you don't have to change the sprite at all, because I'm fine with anything.

Another tragic backstory, another disfigured face that needs a custom item to cover it.

This just seems like another snowflakey item for another snowflakey character from the classic choose your own backstory of A) Disfigured / General Tragedy

B) Ex-Merc / Mil

C) Dead Family / Friends

D) Genetically engineered and therefore my character is allowed to hand-wave nonsense that nobody else gets away with

Ehh, I don't know the depth of the character; he could well be a deep deconstruction of the tired old trope (A), but I'm still iffy on how much people do this kind of thing.

I personally don't see why not. I mean, it may need some balances like... it can't help you in areas where you need internals explicitly. Also, people keep throwing the term snowflakey way too much. I mean, the station is basically a glorified oil rig with intentions to mine and utilize plasma while exploring it's potential... soo industrial accidents are too happen, so it's not enitrely snowflakey.

So if it is down to an industrial accident, or one that would make sense in relation to where they worked... opposed to Chariots example of

Super Ex-merc, loses his face after a genetic accident which lead to him fighting an evil Doctor villian man who inevitably kills all he holds dear!

Coming to cinemas this Winter!

Then I'm cool with it personally. Though, why would he have a screwed up face when reconstructive surgery is a thing?

He's working on the station to get enough money to pay for the surgery, so yup. This mask is much cheaper than surgery, so he decided to buy it first.

So, there's an already coded one and I'd request that instead of coding a completely different one, I'd rather my character have that. I don't really know what it is, but I'm fine with anything letting my character talk. Thank you~

Wouldn't it just take some bio-regen paste, or whatever it is that medbay usually puts on burns? And doesn't the medbay have the facilities to do the surgery for him? I mean, if you want to play a character with a disfigurement that's fine, but they have to be actively refusing treatment for it to be believable.

I'll be an utter hypocrite and agree with this post. I'm guilty of this myself, given my character's 'tragic accident' in her backstory. However, in this case the disfigurement is obvious, eye-catching, and impedes the character in his duties as a doctor.

One answer. "Honor" /shrug/. Plus he likes to work for what he gets.

Hospitals can still replace burnt skin, do facial reconstruction surgery, and he could almost certainly get an implant to help him speak.

So he wants a very conspicuous mask so people can't see his disfigured face, but he still refuses to get reconstructive surgery to fix this disfigurement out of pride? I don't follow the logic here. He can also get an implant to help with his voice, maybe even get new vocal chords with surgery.

I don't see any reason for him to refuse a replacement to his vocal chords. He's a doctor, and not being able to speak can place patients in danger.

I just find it odd that so many people choose to voluntarily remain mutilated when treatment is available. In this case, he also places patients in danger by refusing to get an implant for his vocal chords.

Bear with my spelling or syntax mistakes here. On phone.

I'm going to have to agree with Erik here. There are so many easier and more logical answers to the predicament Kaneki is in. To be brutally honest... It seems like a roundabout excuse to have a cool mask. A mask that could be seen as particularly suspicious on a space sstation like aurora. Even in today's world, most people would prefer to take the surgery than have to explain a thousand times to passers by and security why they have a weird mask. The vocal disfigurement can be very easily fixed through a small implant or surgery itself.
