Translator headset keys

Basic little idea. With some research (probably something like Data 3 Power 1 Bio 1), Research could be able to produce one of two things:

One, headset keys for the public or a specific department that allows translation of alien speech.

Two, simply a translator headset that you can put keys into.

Either way, Science being able to make translation headsets (maybe make them look bigger to reflect the amount of circuitry that would go into them).

Thoughts?

And yet it's on comms. I imagine the translator would only be able to tell you what they're saying on comms channels that the headset has access to. Anyways, I'd like to see this idea get done.

I really like the idea of a translator. One time I had a pAI to translate things for me but I find pAIs are pretty rare. I think the tech requirements should be slightly higher given the exceptional utility of it. I really like the idea of it only working for comms.

They're partially nonverbal according to lore. Also, you're only supposed to use Sol Common on public comms, so a comm-only translator would be totally useless.
I'm pretty sure some alien using its language on the radio would come off as speech impaired, but still possible of communicating.

Anyway, how many times have you seen someone speaking in a different language on comms?

I certainly know I've seen it too many times to count.

Though admittedly, I thought about it - and maybe having an 'instant recording device' (a recording device that, instead of replaying on-demand, just instantly translates things) would help.

Also, the problem I have with the whole 'non-verbal' thing is the difficulty in telecomms if the non-verbal parts carried some important information. Like, saying "Rajaah" with the left instead of the right hand being raised meaning two different things? A nightmare. It would make more sense for it to be used like intonations/syllabe stressing/transfer of emotion or intention, and that can generally be deduced from the word structure by machines.

This gets repeated a lot, but at least for Siik'maas this isn't the case. People are mixing it up with the other Tajaran language, which is less common.
