MagnificentMelkior Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) BYOND key:Magnificent Melkior Character names:Martin Richter (Biologist), Holden Wright (Detectve). How long have you been playing on Aurora?:About 3 months. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?:So that Martin Richter can be CMO, and so that I can play as heads of staff on other (new) characters after I git gud at it. Why did you come to Aurora?:It was listed in the byond server list and it said high roleplay. I stayed because I've had some really good games here and have become entangled with the community. Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?:Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about:Roleplay is immersion into the role of a character. Qualities that make someone a good actor make them a good roleplayer as well, and I think that role playing should be about creating an enjoyable scenario by being a good actor. Fun is, in my opinion, a byproduct of good roleplay, and is the goal of those who choose to roleplay, but fun is too subjective to be a well defined target, and so I say that roleplay itself is what roleplay should be about, or phrased another way, being a good actor. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?:Largely the purposes that it serves ICly, except fewer. To allow for a social hierarchy, which allows for the resolution of conflicts in an official way, removing the need for two engineers to duke it out over a pair of insulated gloves. Also, because ICly heads of staff would exist in this world, so OOCly we expect them. I hope that was not too circular. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?:Off the clock, I personally don't believe there is any White-listee's burden, except perhaps to be helpful to people who ask how to get a white list in ooc. On the clock, however, someone acting as a role that requires a whitelist (including characters who are regarded well enough to be assigned as heads of staff but who happen to be playing the round as a different role) ought to demonstrate a good example to your peers so that they can get a concept in their heads for proper head of staff/taj/etc behavior. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name:Martin Richter Character age:34 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Martin Richter grew up on Earth, raised by two good parents. He went to college originally planning to become a doctor but changed his focus to gene therapy somewhere along the way. He's got a positive and friendly outlook on life in the immediate sense, but has quite a bit of concern and paranoia about the astro-politics 2457. On one hand he just finds genetics fascinating, but on the other he is happy to believe that his research, which pushes the human(oid) form to new levels, takes away the teeth of the argument that synthetics will ultimately advance beyond us. He firmly believes that if we play our cards right, humanity can reign eternal in our realm. Martin's time on the Aurora has changed him, somewhat. He has seen a lot of absurd crises situations, and been forced to respond to them, falling back on his medical training. In his opinion, he has handled these situations well, and feels that he would be an asset to NT if they gave him command of the medical bay he's seen so much blood in. What do you like about this character?:He's talented and strong willed, so I can do a lot with him. He also has connections with a lot of the crew, both friendly, rivalrous, and in at least one case both, that provide me with a lot of entertaining RP. What do you dislike about this character?:He's kindof a dupe. While he's about as trust/suspicious of strangers as anybody else, he really lets his guard down with people that he considers friends. This causes him to let others get away with things that he probably shouldn't. He's also kindof a softie. When I'm an antag sometimes I want to and am able to bust into the CMO or RD's office, take their ID, and do evil stuff, but unless said head has wronged him, Richter just can't do it, even as a syndi-op. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He is competent in medical professions, and specializes in genetics which is seldom understood by medbay and this knowledge has resulted in many saved lives. He knows how to take command, and he has a proven record for success in a crisis. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: Pretty good. Extra notes: EDIT: today, 12/15, I was promoted to interim CMO on a long and busy shift and got a feel for the job. I'll let other people assess how I did. Edited December 15, 2015 by Guest
Owen Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) In my experiences when I was role playing with Melkior he has been ropleplaying very well. He seems, at least from what I can tell, mature enough and has enough experience to at least try out a Head of Staff role. EDIT: After a while and more interactions with Melkior, I think I am going to give this a -1. Edited December 19, 2015 by Guest
Owen Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Also just a tip to prepare to be a head of staff, try to he promoted to an interim head of staff Just to try things out and see how you fair.
Blingx3 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Martin has been on my dark side for a long time, mainly because he is a geneticst, and I think geneticts should shot hanged and burned. but after I've seen him ingame I liked him. he understand what he is doing, he knows procedure and follows the rules of the department, I also seen him help around medbay to treat and save lifes. He has my support +1 GO GET EM TIGER. GRRRR
Garnascus Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I am going to be honest here, as someone now helping out tish with whitelists. I have seen your character a lot in game playing as a geneticist, even interacted with them on some of my head characters. You give yourself powers every single round, skirt the regulations or fight it if a head tells you not to, and most importantly you toe the line between vigilantism and outright validhunting just because you have OP powers. You consistently abuse genetics powers i think, in fact whenever you have hulk you seem to use it as an excuse to disregard all sense of self-preservation, Pain or fear RP. You can argue some of this is an IC issue, and some of it is. However i cant say im comfortable endorsing this application.

You give yourself powers every single round, skirt the regulations or fight it if a head tells you not to, and most importantly you toe the line between vigilantism and outright validhunting just because you have OP powers. Giving myself powers is the ONLY way to effectively find out what blocks are what gene mods, and, despite admitted transgressions in the past, I always remove any dangerous gene mods now before I leave the lab. This is of course thrown out the window when I'm an antag. I definitely do not run around the station doing security's job hunting for antags, but if security fails then I start thinking self defense, and I use my powers to be an effective medical first responder (more of a body-bagger, really, since I'm not prepared to treat people in the field as a geneticist.) whenever you have hulk you seem to use it as an excuse to disregard all sense of self-preservation, Pain or fear RP. You can argue some of this is an IC issue, and some of it is. However i cant say im comfortable endorsing this application. Hulks are almost immune to pain, mechanically. Why shouldn't I RP as such? Lore follows mechanics, or so I've been told. I've never been given a definitive lore explanation for hulks, or how to behave as one, but I imagine it would feel uncomfortable, so I become a little more irritable, and otherwise I am an intelligent being (a bit diminished by said irritability) in the biological equivalent of a mech suit, so naturally I get braver if combat comes to me, but I don't go and hunt down antags like a vigilante. What you're saying may have been true about me in the past, more or less, I think that since Killerhurtz had a talk with me about it I really have changed the way I handle genetics, for the better, and I don't think this should be what holds me back from the whitelist.

(...) (...)Hulks are almost immune to pain, mechanically. Why shouldn't I RP as such? (...) Huh. I had to find my older post, because I'm too lazy to write up a new one: Why would the geneticist fiddle with their genes like that? (...), or perhaps they should fear some strange genetic, permanent disabilities, sicknesses and diseases? I believe, genetics (...) are years of risky researching and testing. There's a reason we have paperwork (waivers) and protohumans [and we need CMO/RD approvals]. Genetics is supposed to be difficult, unsafe and dangerous field of research, not something where you can give out powers like candy, and not fear any repercussions. I probably wouldn't ever want to fuck my genetic code up, making myself a green, unintelligent not-a-human.
Synnono Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I have been playing with Martin Richter recently on my psychiatrist, and I have very much enjoyed the interactions between them. I think that the player does a good job with Richter as a memorable character, and makes an effort to engage the people on the medical staff. Richter himself has served at least once on a shift I worked as a good, official interim CMO, and on others as an unofficial leader. He tends to step up and organize the medbay when there's no-one else doing so, and exhibits a strong knowledge of the department and its needs. However, I have also noticed the self/crew experimentation and skirting of protocol that has been mentioned in this thread. As a crewman working under him, I might be concerned with a history of disregard for regulations, and I imagine the people reviewing him for this kind of a promotion might as well. While I'm assuming the frequent Hulk-ing is not necessarily canon (isn't it a myth in lore?), it's probably safe to say that there have been at least a few shifts where he's altering himself (and others) with experimental treatments, and that's sort of a big deal in his position as the guy primarily responsible for reviving the crew. I haven't known the character long enough to know if there's been a shift in behavior from this toward something more responsible, and in my opinion responsibility is a hallmark of good command staff. Summarizing, I think the player would play the Head role well if he or she were selected, but I'm on the fence as to whether Richter specifically should be a candidate at this time. That comes mostly from an in-world standpoint, based on interactions I've witnessed, and has nothing to do with the OOC element.
Killerhurtz Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 -1. Richter is hands down one of the most problematic geneticists out there (I can think of only a few that are more problematic). My characters are exactly on the edge to start the process of getting it permanently demoted. I'm REALLY afraid of what Richter would do with RD powers.

This seems like metagruding to me to be honest. All your characters come down hard on me for no reason, starting with the time when you attempted to murder me as a non antag because I was hulked in my own lab, and wanted to scan myself in the DNA modifier before getting rid of it. What do I do that is so problematic? Edit: Also I don't want to be RD, I don't think Richter is qualified for that.

Richter is your stereotypical geneticist that's the reason the role needs to be reworked. The guy who gives himself powers constantly, is always on the front line of any antag situation, and just generally is exactly the kind of person who should not have any power. And certainly not any superpowers. And people might say 'oh well the player might play a head well' but I think behavior like that is bad RP and if someone thinks behaving like that, they're probably not suited to a head of staff position. -1
