BYOND Key: MetaphysicalPersona

Total Ban Length: Permanemt

Banning staff member's Key: Dea Tacita

Reason of Ban: Unrealistic stats and/or character

Reason for Appeal: I fixed my records to be more believable, if it's still not satisfying please tell me.

AGE: 19

- Subject is greatly genetically modified

- Appearance is very slightly inhuman and "animal" like.

- 2438 - Was genetically modified in the womb before birth, reasons are unknown. DNA was infused with various creatures DNA the procedure is highly illegal. Due to the slight failure of the procedure it was attempted to be reversed 2 years after birth and only 12.34% of the effects were corrected but interesting features are still manifesting.

I think these might be the problem that was brought up.

This allows you to have nothing but the most BASIC amount of knowledge ICly. I.E. you CANNOT completely do ANY scientific activity, even if taught ICly to do so.

Wild looking eyes.

I don't know about you, but I've NEVER looked at someone and said "Huh, she certainly has wild eyes. And even if I did, I wouldn't write it down in an official employment record.

-Subject is greatly genetically modified

-Thick black fur like hairs covering the body

-Appearance is very slightly inhuman and "animal" like.

-2440 - Has undergone extensive gene therapy to fix the illegal genetic experimentation effects.

This was the MAIN point I had against you. Minor genetic modification is acceptable, but to the point of her being covered in big-foot tier hair. No, you've clearly not really made ANY progress on this character. You seem intent on sticking to this character no matter what we tell you, and only look to make the most minor modifications possible. Which isn't acceptable at this point.

You also continue to take an excessively informal tone on your records. THESE ARE FORMAL RECORDS.

Waitress for Umbral Light 5 hours
Why....why would that even be added on there.

Top geneticist lab assistant/student for Korean bio technology industry 바이오 기술 baio gisul (Bio Tech) 4 years
For one, why would NT records have Hangul characters in their records, when they operate purely in Tau Ceti Basic? Also, your character started working in the biotech industry at...15?

(self taught, was being tested in BioTech)
What? Your character did weapon-testing in a biotechnical corporation? As a 15-19 year old? I just find that unbelievable

I'm going to hazard a guess that this is in reference to Seon-rin.

When I was a Duty Officer I interviewed Seon-Rin about these same records. I have the interview on file. If these are necessary for comparison porpoises, contact Gollee, since I no longer have access to it.

If I can somehow get the investigation thread back, I can submit my evaluation on the character from both the perspective of a DO and from the perspective as Loremaster.

I've got access to the investigation thread, if admins are fine with me posting the details on your behalf

I'll try to come up with a list of Seon's combined traits which essentially make her a Mary Sue character:

  • She's extremely young yet has non-negligible experience in various fields
  • She's got extensive combat skills (martial arts and firearms) despite being barely more than a teenager, and her primary occupation being centered nowhere around combat
  • She's aggressive, confrontational, and tends to behave like a street thug, despite working on a high-grade research station
  • She makes a fair share of lewd comments and openly engages in creepy or disturbing behavior (again in what should be a research lab)
  • She earned her qualifications by being super smart/top of her class despite being deeply troubled
  • Her backstory is really outlandish and dramatic (illegal test tube baby, somehow beat the shit out of a police officer as a teen and got released to work on the Aurora a year later)
  • She's been gene-modded far more than any regular human you'd expect to encounter in our lore
  • None of these traits seem to be presented in a "bad" light. She's still pretty, her outbursts are against people who are presented as having "deserved" it, her supposedly undesirable personality traits makes her more "cool and edgy" than a honest social reject, and she manages to avoid most punishment despite engaging in outlandish actions.

Now, the thing is most of these traits can be played well, with careful thought. But you can't do all of them at once! That's just a bad, bad recipe for trouble. A character that does all of these things at once is way too bloated with "special factor", and it doesn't give you any chance to expand on any of the traits in a believable manner. Furthermore, your character ends up being very shallow, because there are little to no character in both real life and fiction that have all these special traits at once, and it makes it hard both to relate to the character, and actually roleplay them in a way they would be realistically expected to act.

If you're interested in proceeding further with this, and finding out exactly what Seon's flaws are and what the best ways to fix them would be, then I'd start by asking you a question: What do you think you enjoy most about roleplaying on SS13?

No unban yet? What must I do?

You should reply to the criticism that was given. I tried to write a post detailing issues with Seon, as did Dea.

Can we talk about some of these and engage in dialogue? This is probably going to take a bit of time to figure out.

Tomorrow maybe? I need sleep.

I like that you made this list because its a useful way to organize the dialogue. I'd like to address them point by point, based on the current version of Meta's records as of this writing.

  • I don't think anything in her experience tab is hard to believe except for the four years in a biotech firm. I think "Top geneticist's lab assistant/student" for 4 years could be changed to something like 2 years custodial staff 2 years lab assistant in the same place. (its not that out landish to land a cool job in highschool through connections, and her dad was a geneticist).
  • I would not call her firearm skills extensive. Every kid who grows up on a farm shoots guns, and Seon was born and raised on a farm.
  • Street thug is a bit far. But yes, she's been chastised for this behavior. However, I think this is a character issue and can be resolved by DOs if she gets too far out of line. I don't think it warrants a ban for the player. Would you agree with that?
  • Ditto. I don't think its unbelievable that NT would hire someone who turns out to be creepy, so long as they are capable of supressing that during interviews and the like. Again, does not contribute to a justification for a ban.
  • Granted.
  • Granted.
  • You're restating your last point here, this is not a separate instance of a mary sue trait.
  • I think you make a good point here, and would ask Meta to consider either turning up the negative consequences of her backstory, or toning down the severity of it (specifically with the cop-beating... although being a minor does afford her a certain amount of protection.)

Gonna give MetaphysicalPersona a chance to answer, but one thing I wanna add concerning what's been brought up with skills is that characters are expected to have a reasonable skillset. Seon is a lab assistant, but she's both super young and knows how to fight, and coincidentally has one of the most confrontational personalities on the station. It's already pushing it to have a farmhand develop a pronounced interest in theoretical research and suddenly excel in all of their academical endeavors, but having the same character act like a complete dick and constantly get in trouble like a highschool drama villain probably crosses a line somewhere.

Like, really, the only acceptable instance of a young lab assistant who's super smart and knows what to do in a fight would be one where the character doesn't metagame, doesn't validhunt, and doesn't break the law or do their best to get into fights whenever possible.

With great power comes great responsibility. If you're really intent on creating a character who's a genius, make it about providing an interesting storyline for all involved, not about picking fights with everyone/being literally flawless/some impossible combination of both.

So I'm not allowed to... have a character who grew up on a farm, physically fit, has a interest in science despite her background, is able to wield small arms, and slightly genetically modified?

Her father was a geneticist/scientist who experimented on farm animals all her life, he's a high ranking Geneticist with links to many research institutes and/or facilities. I think it's natural to like like science if you were surrounded by it your whole life.

And ICly, I haven't got arrested many times lately prior to the ban, I've changed a lot.

I'm not trying to make a snowflake or whatever it's called but I feel it's fun to play as Rin and I don't think I'm hated for making her.

The guy in the backseat could have a lot of pointers about driving, but it's nothing anybody wants to listen to while the vehicle is in motion.

The issue, as FFrances has pointed out in far more detail, is that Seon is too much of an unbelievable, unrealistic character. Yes, this is a silly spessmen game, but characters are expected to be somewhat reasonable in keeping with the RP environment.

Regardless of the IC background justifications, a character is expected to have a reasonable amount of knowledge and skills for their age, education, career etc. In our universe, people go to school, knowledge can't be 'imprinted' artificially (AFAIK) and homeschooling does not grant anymore massive intelligence. No accredited hospital, advanced school, military institution, gov't agency, etc. would permit a child to join up with them, due to age restrictions and other reasons that have parallels in real life. Also, age and experience count for a lot of what characters can know and it is impossible to replicate this fully using technology of any kind (in a nutshell: older characters can know more, and vice versa).

In the past, we had things like 18 y/o pregnant doctor/HoS captains. These characters had backstories similar to the one Seon has (genetically modified/vat-bred, extensively home educated, etc.). Their backstory justifications were deemed too extreme, too unrealistic and only enabled people to make such unrealistic characters that they stood out blatantly as snowflakes.

At age 19, your best bet would be an intern or unskilled position (cargo techie, janitor, etc.). Seon could be in the process of going to medical school or something, but at that young of an age, she wouldn't have a lot of skills.
