Neglect of Duty: What is it?

Question

Diverting some discussion from http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=4671&start=30 to here.

As a Security regular, I'm pretty much answering what seems to be a misunderstanding here rather than raising a question myself, but this seems like the appropriate subforum for that.

In summary: Neglect of Duty in response to somebody abusing genetics powers is a pretty stock standard example of how Neglect of Duty gets applied on Aurora. It's kind of a catch-all regulation, since nearly any mistake of a sufficient magnitude can constitute neglect of duty. For instance, allowing the slimes to get out of hand in xenobiology.

There seems to be some disagreement from http://aurorastation.org/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=858 Melkior here, but this is pretty much universally how I see Neglect of Duty used. If you're going around making a nuisance of yourself with powers as a Geneticist (as was the point of discussion in this thread), there's a pretty good chance you'll see Neglect of Duty charges slapped on you eventually.

If this isn't how Neglect of Duty is meant to be used, then uhh... what, exactly, is it for?

Can we just jobban the Furry already and stop this hell of him making himself out to be the victim and comparing his treatment to what is effectively the tajaran holocaust

By the way, Furry, please stop trying to equate your 2d spacecat oppressions to actual unfair discriminations that other minorities face around the world.

Lel what? No one’s brought up anything taj or cat related other than you. I’ve been talking about the perception of genetics and whether that perception is accurate or not and rebutted skulls comments that “stereotypes tend to be grounded in truth”. Now...if you want me to start defending taj and comparing it to the holocaust I’d be happy to oblige. But that would be irrelevant to this conversation and not a topic that I brought here. Are you sure you want to bring cats up here? XD

that's some of the poorest reasoning i've seen. "everyone hates it so it must be true"? theirs a lot of factors that go into stereotypes and in fact stereotypes actually tend to stem from fallacious things; or are you gona tell me there's actually some truth to the stereotype that Asians have an inability to drive? what effects stereotypes more than truth? mob mentality, generalized dislike for a group, group bias, which is displayed with prevalence here. all of these things have zero to do with whether the stereotype is true or not but weigh in heavily to creating the stereotype. i can tell you, in my time of playing when theres actually a geneticist on the chances of them fucking around is far less then chemists, security, and janitors, who seem to fuck around on more than a daily basis. which is why im incline to believe that this stereotype stems from the fallacious roots of mod mentality and group bias rather than any actual truth.

it's a 2d space cat holocaust

>w-wow i didn't bring up cats

I can see it now, safi gives every assistant on the server TK then explain that's the new sop so she shouldn't get into trouble. How bout we keep it as self-testing is ok and if they abuse it just arrest them.

ok.

it is 110% accurate and it is literally the only thing that anyone sees from genetics in our day in age. this, includes, you. you're not special at all, you just happen to be the most outspoken about this and you're willing to go to great lengths to threaten and accuse other players in the community to defend your fallacious and utterly misguided position on the matter.

Sadly, the admins haven't any concrete evidence to bury you in the hole that you keep digging yourself into. You are the most amazing example of how not to conduct yourself as a scientist or as a roleplayer on this server. You constantly shield your position with excuses and load your arguments with god-awfully-made comparisons to real life oppression that actual, real 3d people face and have to toil through.

Now...if you want me to start defending taj and comparing it to the holocaust I’d be happy to oblige.

I don't even care if this is a joke or not, holy shit, stop SHITposting. Take a fucking break and use some introspection. You need to grow some self-awareness, bud.

I’m sorry, you don’t get to shut someone up in an open discussion just because you don’t like their arguments and have nothing constructive to say. There’s a huge difference between having a discord and shit posting. Only one shit posting here is you and chaz. I’ve only added or rebutted the conversation at hand, not once did I bring up taj as a thing, or make any comments about any select individual. Your complaint has come down to you don’t like how vocal I am about the misperception people attribute to genetics. Literally you just want me to shut up because you don’t like someone challenging your position. I’m sorry, this is an open discussion for a reason, if you don’t like it you can choose not to participate. But you don’t get to just shut me up.

Now let’s break down what you’re saying, the one little part you did add to the conversation.

You constantly shield your position with excuses and load your arguments with god-awfully-made comparisons to real life oppression that actual, real 3d people face and have to toil through.

Actually this conversation started with the opposition saying how absurd it is for scientists to self-test because in real life it would never happen (which is untrue it’s happened throughout history, but still). So I’m taking a chapter from the opposition’s book on this. Your trying to have it both ways, the opposition (which includes you) says real life would never allow it to happen, then when I use real life as an example your saying “oh it’s just real life this is a game”. You’re trying to uphold a situation in which the same grounds for an argument are true for you but not true for me, that’s called a double standard bro.

The reason why the rule for self-testing was originally highlighted/enforced wasn't for realism purposes. It was to stop geneticists from constantly giving themselves ridiculous powers (i.e. hulk) while producing mediocre, immersion-shattering RP, and to prevent people with powers from becoming common deus-ex devices.

The former has improved to a degree - chucklefucking in genetics is rare, and the few geneticists we have are a bit more serious and respected. The latter is still an occasional problem (antags in maintenance being revealed by random x-ray vision geneticists), and I think the best fix for it would be to make powers harder or more punishing to use (which would make them good for short experiments or antagging, but unviable as a round-long type of deal.)

In my opinion realism arguments are kinda moot for this.

In any case, self testing scientists generally die, or get super-fired. The very few who actually get results, such as local anaesthetic guy, or catheter in heart guy are just that, very few. If Skull has said that self testing is not good, then feel free to submit IRs on such geneticists and they will be dealt with harshly.

I said IR not complaint. I have nothing to do with player or character complaints; and as I am sure several community members can say, the DO corp is not afraid to stomp on stuff hard.

The title is misleading as opposed to the content of the OP, which discusses "geneticist rights", and not what everyone else was discussing regarding what Neglect of Duty is.

I don't think this thread needs 7-ish pages of blood orgy because we have controversial and opposing opinions on geneticists. I mean, shit, it got derailed real hard when we decided to bring up social justice in a 2d spessman game ;)

The question was answered, was it not? Hopefully this means self-testing gets to go for good.

I think we're leaning towards removing genetics, but that alone is more of seperate topic.

Please feel free to start another thread on that topic.

In the meantime, until then, to the garbage doth self-testing go.
