nursie's skrell whitelist

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: NursieKitty

Character Names: Phoebe Essel, Kazuo Kurosawa, Kiara Branwen, Symphonia, some less important others.

Species you are applying to play: Skrell.

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Kinda like a dark sea foam, maybe.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

Skrell are extremely scientific and intelligent, with scientists and the such becoming pop icons and get the same kind of recognition we give Kanye West (or at least that's the image in my head). Even their leader is a scientist, publishing dozens of his own theories, thesis, whichever. They also live way, way longer than humans thanks to their ridiculous biotech. The fact that skrell are amphibious and have issues eating meat provides a different take on survival and daily life compared to mister "i eat everything you put in front of me," the human.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Well, like said above, they place a lot of importance on intelligence, and what you can do with it verses how strong you are, or how wealthy you are. A vast majority have a deep-seated hatred or distrust for artificial intelligence, due to the first, second, and third incidents, not to mention the almighty Glorsh fucking Omega. I like to see them as a very practical, efficient people, as evidenced by how they tend to speak and how they conduct themselves.

Character Name:Oceoyl'Fedas Wruorv'hxeo

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Born in 2162, Oceoyl was born in Fedas during the Glorsh Rebellion, some years after it was retaken by the skrell. As he grew, he learned to build and repair robotics and machinery, and tinkered with programming in solitary. When he reached adulthood, he decided to set out on his own - and come face to face with trouble. He reached a construct and was held up by shards of Glorsh-Omega, and upon revealing his background, was forced into labor constructing more eyes, ears, and hands for Glorsh, and was stuck doing so until the rebellion was over.

When skrell freed themselves of Glorsh, he found that his best skills were - robotics and programming - were frowned upon by his peers. So he entered the bio-tech field, thinking it was the next best thing, to solve problems caused by the genophage, develop implants, prosthesis, and help his people leap leagues from where Glorsh had left them so that the skrell could flourish once more. Still, it wasn't his true passion and despite his history, his opinion of Glorsh differs greatly from other skrell.

This, among other things, led to his permanent relocation to Tau Ceti in 2420, along with another skrell who worked with him and shared his views.

What do you like about this character?

He's been around and has had his hands in many types of science. He was enslaved, picked himself back up after the rebellion, and helped his people succeed despite his personal wishes. He's a bit of a contrarian regarding Glorsh-Omega, which is going to be wonderful because I am a glutton for character conflict, internal or external.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? I don't like this question. What I will say is that my first reaction to "this type of character is shit, it's never been done well" is "okay, watch me do it well" which sounds incredibly egotistical when I actually write it out. I guess that means I rate myself highly.

Notes: Special thanks to Mofo for his assistance, and Loow for lending me some HOT NEW SKRELL LORE.

Hey, I'd be more than willing to +1 this. The lore in the app is, very obviously, clashing with the current lore on the wiki, but I'm going to assume this is information based on the upcoming update since you said you were talking to Loow (can't wait to see it!). I feel like this character is very conducive to more role-play, and Nursie is a very seasoned and experienced roleplayer.

Yes, +1 please. I have been trying to get Nur'sie to warble for some time now. Amazingly enough, this appeared and she is also making someone who was alive for Fedas!

One million +1's for that sweet sweet warble.

A great roleplayer and stuff blah blah. Just adding words to add words now.

YAAAAS. +1.

Now on to why.

Nursie is, frankly, one of the most pleasant RPers I've interacted with in my time on Aurora. And that's saying a lot. Everyone'll jump on the Phoebe bandwagon here and that's great and all, but honestly, I'd like to commend her on all her characters, namely, Kazuo Kurosawa, whom I've worked with before in engineering. I have many, many fond memories of the days when Engineering was mained by players like Vincent Capriello, Acel Delrico, Oliver Stefan and Ananda Santana, and of course, Kazuo.

I'm seriously looking forwards to the RP that this can create, the debates, situations, conflict, and all that sweet, sweet RP. Nursie almost never takes an IC issue out of character, and I can definitely trust that she'll be a very responsible, mature person about any conflict stirred up by this traitorous scum respectfully different Skrellian individual. Nursie is capable of creating incredibly well-rounded and 3D characters, and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that she'd make a great warbler. This has all my endorsement.

After waiting the cursory number of 3+ days, reading the posted feedback, and discussing my concerns with Nursie, I can say with some sense of certainty that this is probably an okay idea. I'd like to make it clear that I'm not particularly fond of the possible trend of on-station Skrell spitting in the face of their history, their society, and their own life experiences their entire life in order to make them just so happen to be more accessible to the masses of the alien races they just happened to meet a few decades ago.

A good deal of the Skrell population is basically unable to have children and their society places the blame squarely on a synthetic. This is something the Skrell of today would not simply forget, and quite a few of them would even remember living through it. This isn't ancient history. This is not water under the bridge. I'd also like to take the opportunity to remind the class that you don't have to be carving swastikas into computer screens or stabbing IPC's in the prison yard to RP a character who distrusts artificial intelligence.

Nursie will likely do fine with this whitelist, but I want to make it clear that she has an uphill battle ahead of her. Nursie summed it up quite well in her application. "this type of character is shit, it's never been done well" but her answers to a few pointed questions and some mild grilling have left me willing to "watch me do it well."

Good luck.

Application Accepted.
