[Denied] 1elbow's Head of Staff Application

BYOND key: 1elbow

Character names: Elric Woodward

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: In total, I have probably played for around a month now. This has been my main server for the past couple of weeks.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I believe that since I have spent a lot of time in quite a few of the lower-tier jobs, being white-listed for head jobs is a natural step up, and I feel as if I would be well suited for those roles. I would also like to help better the roleplay experience in-game by playing the quite necessary head roles.

Why did you come to Aurora?: I have played on several servers during my years of SS13. However, most of them had little to no roleplay aspect to them. Most players would spend their time trolling during the round, or even talking OOC while IC. Aurora, I have found, is the best roleplay experience I have found on the game. People actually take their jobs seriously while playing, which I believe makes the entire round much more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yes, I know that most Head jobs require your character to be atleast 30 years old and have a large amount of experience in the field that they will be working in, as well as a college education.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay can be defined as when players completely take on the role of the characters they have created for themselves. This means that the player will act with the same personality as their character in a consistent manner. They will also only possess information that their character would naturally possess at the time. For instance: A janitor would know the station layout quite well, as they have cleaned most areas within the station. However, that same janitor would have no knowledge of the nuclear weapon onboard, as only the captain knows of its existence. Maintaining the role of your character and not breaking character at all will allow for the round to run much more smoothly and be more realistic for everyone involved.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: The OOC purpose for a Head of Staff is to make sure that all players are playing the game correctly and doing their jobs well. A player on their own could potentially do their job without a Head of Staff present, but without a person to lead them and direct the roleplay of the round, things could quickly fall apart. The Head's main job in OOC is to redirect roleplay to create a possible story-arc for the round, and therefore create a more enjoyable gameplay experience.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: A whitelisted player is not meant for berating or throwing out orders left and right to other players due to their high rank. A whitelisted player should instead try to maintain communication with their subordinates in order to make sure that not only their job goes smoothly, but the job of the whole server. A Head of Security yelling and insulting one of his officers because they did a bad job would rarely ever contribute to the roleplay as a whole on the server, so the HoS should instead try to direct that officer to a more suitable situation where they would excel, and then be able to contribute to the game again. I would make sure that I could uphold these responsibilities by not yelling at other players, but instead offering constructive feedback while In character.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name: Elric Woodward

Character age: 36

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Elric Woodward was born on the planet of Mars to a middle-class family. His father was a career military officer, while his mother was the head Xenobiologist of a small research facility in the Inner Sphere. When Elric was four, his mother was killed during a massive containment breach on her facility by slimes. Left with only his father to take care of him, Elric went on to receive a standard education, earning top grades in all of his classes. When he was 17 he left Mars in order to attend the Sol Alliance Naval Academy on Earth in order to follow in his father's footsteps. After four years, he graduated at the top of his class and became a Lieutenant in the Sol Alliance Naval Corps. In his third year of service, his ship was boarded by a much larger pirate force in the Outer Sphere. While Elric was able to defend the ship with his men, he was left critically wounded, with his right arm being lost in an explosion, and his eyes being damaged from the shrapnel. Elric was then honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.

With a new robotic limb, Elric went on to seek work from the prestigious Corporation, NanoTrasen, which had grown significantly during the decline of the Sol Alliance. Because of his military history, he was quickly offered a job as a Security Officer on-board one of their facilities. Elric realized that this was the closest he could get to being in the military again, so he graciously accepted the offer. Though initially skeptical of Nanotrasen due to its shaky reputation, Elric's opinion of the Company quickly began to improve when he was offered a promising paycheck and a secure job. As he began to climb the ranks of the Security Department, Elric quickly became an avid and outspoken supporter of the company. He has since continued to work for the company, serving aboard a research station in the Tau Ceti system.

What do you like about this character?: I like Elric because he is a very loyal person towards not just his employers, but to his coworkers as well. He is often a very positive and optimistic person in even the worst situations. I also love this character due to it being one of my first characters in SS13, so I have had a lot of time to work on his personality and traits over the years.

What do you dislike about this character?: Elric is often a bit too trusting of other people (A trait that has gotten me killed in many rounds). He often follows orders without questioning them at all, even if they seem morally wrong. There are also times when he will become more serious and engage in some more questionable acts in order to advance in the world. The character itself also seems a bit bland to me, mostly because I made it when I was several years younger than I am now.

What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Due to his loyalty to both the crew of the station, and NanoTrasen, Elric should be an obvious choice for the company, as he could be a great spokesperson to improve the reputation of NanoTrasen in general. His positive attitude towards life would also allow him to become much more popular among crew members and workers in his departments. As well as this, his ability to follow orders, despite how questionable they seem would make him a great asset to the company. His military background would also make him a great candidate for a leader in many situations.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: In general, my roleplaying ability can be fairly advanced when it comes to short to medium length replies or even short paragraphs. I am able to make my responses seem natural to a conversation and not robotic like other players tend to be on other servers. However, when it comes to longer replies that involve multiple actions being done at once, I do notice myself slipping in the quality of my writing. This problem has been improving in the past few months however. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give myself a 7.5 or an 8 at best. It is not perfect by any means, but it tends to be fairly detailed.

i believe you need more time on server, the round earlier proved that much, not only did you commit suicide by sliming yourself, you had the genius idea of bringing a slime to departures and unleashing them for god knows what reason, causing mayhem. all while being a non-antag.

i'll have to -1 for now. you need to familiarize yourself with station directives, SOP and most importantly, server rules if you wish to be a head of staff.

I'm going to have to agree with DatBerry on this one, the incident with the slimes really throws me off on this application. In addition to that, you've only been around for about a month, and I haven't really seen any of your characters around to give a positive rating for this. If it were me, I would give it a little bit more time before you apply for a Head position, try and make your character a little more well known.

Though, me being the staff member who dealt with the slime incident, i'm not going to +1 or -1, but i'll leave my opinion here.

Yeah, I really don't know about this. After the stunt of bringing on a slime that effectively crippled and nearly killed half of the crew onboard because of how impossible they are to deal with mechanically, I cannot in good faith support an application for a higher responsibility role after witnessing that.

Elric Woodward

The guy who always plays security.

..What's up with the job-hopping, too? Just today I've seen you as an EMT and as a xenobiologist?

If I may say something for a second. I now realize that my actions a few rounds ago has seriously affected how people are looking at this application, and now even I am scratching my head as to why I released that slime at the end of the round. It was honestly stupid looking back at it. Though, In my honest defense, I had taken time out of that round specifically to read the rules regarding escalation of conflict before I took that action. I honestly believe that my character had a legitimate reasoning behind his actions, even if they did seem troll-like at the time. I also honestly had no intention of the slime multiplying like it did or even killing anyone for that matter. Though, even saying that I realize how much that has ruined the little reputation that I have. Though I may not have much of a say anymore, I can assure everyone that my actions there do not reflect on my roleplaying capability at all. I deeply apologize for that event and people losing any respect for me. I hope that in the future, this event will not change what people think of me.
