Why do you wish to play this specific race: Skrell have a very deep history, and are nowadays quite rarely seen on station. I think their rich culture and intriguing attitude towards the other races make them very enjoyable to play as, while their difficulty with basic is an interesting handicap/modifier to RP. The skrell also have a really interesting history (especially with synthetic life) as well as a very unique set of customs and beliefs.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Skrell have a much worse grasp on common, usually speaking in very curt, simple sentences, having difficulty to understand inflections and nuances in the language of others. However, in their own language, Nral'Malic, the skrell are capable of even more subtility and emotion than humans, though this is lost on the more primitive races. Skrell also have a very deep and bitter history with synthetics, meaning they treat them with suspicion at best and disdain at worst. Skrell also have a fascination with progress and learning, making them very dedicated to their work and placing an enormous pressure on individual skrells to succeed. Skrells are typically very logical, though they find admitting mistakes extremely shameful. Skrells are typically somewhat ascetic, not seeking out luxury for the sake of it, and are generally herbivores, preferring soft foods due to their lack of teeth. Skrell can also live much, much longer than humans, and therefore can acquire a colossal amount of experience and skills by the end of their lives, as well as having many skrell that were present during historical events still alive today.

Character Name: Wrelshi Hrgul'Qeblak

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Born in 2359 on Kal'lo, Qerrbalak, Wrelshi Hrgul'Qeblak was born to a respected Aeronautics Engineer and Astrophysicist who were key members in the reconstruction of the Skrell space program, post-Glorsh Rebellion. They were also devoted Qeblaks, who placed much value on the stars and their meaning in every day life, and they raised their son to these ideals. Wrelshi was particularly fascinated with the functioning of spaceships and space stations, and found that exploring the stars and the universe was the way he wanted to spend his life. He attended a prestigious engineering school on Qerrbalak, much to the pride of his family, where he learned all the skills necessary to run, operate, and improve space ships.

For many years, he served as engineer, and chief engineer, in the Jargon Federation Navy, but was displeased at the lack of exploration and discovery he could perform in a military environment. Wrelshi decided to rediscover his Qeblak roots, adding " 'Qeblak" to his legal name, resigning from the JFN, and deciding to explore the worlds and stars of the humans first, learning basic and imbibing human culture along the way. He discovered Nanotrasen, and fascinated with their wide reach and incredible phoron research. His stellar record meant NT was ecstatic at the opportunity to hire him, where he was quickly promoted to the position of Chief Engineer and sent to the NSS Aurora. Despite Hrgul'Qeblak's misgivings with NT's use of synthetics, he sees his position as CE as an opportunity to keep them in check, while still being able to pursue his dreams.

What do you like about this character?

I quite enjoy his somewhat spiritualist nature, as I've never attempted a religious character before. He also has a rich history, with a lot of interesting lore to build off of, making him an interesting character with a lot of possibilities. His attitude is very interesting, usually being very calm and methodical, preferring resolving problems through reason and logic rather than brute force. He isn't as arrogant or dismissive as most people think skrell are, since he wishes to learn from humans rather than dismiss them. He also has a lot of potential to develop meaningfully in conjunction with his faith and his want to explore and discover.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

I think a solid 8/10. I have a decently wide variety of unique characters, which I can all RP quite well. I can usually create compelling experiences through my character's personality, and I think I have been doing very well as a (mostly) non-violent HoP recently (Francois Leonce).

I really like this application. Wrelshi Hrgul'Qeblak has a lot of personality, and his backstory is one of the most believable I've seen. I like that Wrelshi's dad is far more... heroic than he is. After all, he helped reconstruct their space program which lead to the reconnection of stellar skrell and the construction of the second Nralakk Federation. Meanwhile he's just a young skrell who served in the military who resigned and set out to explore the stars. His motivations are clear, he's a starry eyed young squid who wants to continue the Skrell passion for exploration and discovery.

Probably the strongest part of the application is that it doesn't revolve around synthetics. It has a healthy helping of impressing upon readers the historical grievance, without shoe-horning Wrelshi's life into being completely about it. It's a common mistake by Skrell applicants and you avoided the pitfall.

I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me here was the focus on Qeblak. It's been over a year before I've really seen anyone really care about Skrell religions. It's a fresh change of pace and a nice reintroduction into the forefront of the lore.

[mention]Mofo1995[/mention], thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I've never done a religious character before, and I found that qeblak was pretty interesting while remaining fluid enough to not restrict my RP, and that a spiritualist/romantic skrell would make for a fun character.

Even if glorsh was a colossally influential event, and a somewhat recent one too in skrell terms, I didn't really want to make my first skrell character focused on it, since there's so much more to skrell than "muh ai." Though I do have a couple ideas for antag skrells revolving around AI, I feel like most skrell that work for NT shouldn't be centered around hating AI, considering the fact that NT uses a them regularly. Sure, most skrell will have many misgivings about synthetics, but not outright center their entire lives around hating them.

Looks like you've gotten some useful feedback on your character concept, and you've even responded in a way that gives me a better idea of where you're going with this character. I gave you a little bit of feedback a while ago, but I won't waste your time by repeating it all here. You seem to have a solid character in mind that you care about and enjoy working on. I look forward to seeing what you do with it and where he goes as a character.
