zyymurgy
BYOND Key: zyymurgy Character Names: Azsi Akeelanii Myr'rhana Zurejhamel'ere Zirra'sharr Rurrsiim Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): N/A Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: IPCs are interesting. As a Shell IPC, one is similar to humans in appearance, but mannerisms and mode of expression are completely different. I prefer playing nonhumans, however most of the xeno species have complex lore that can be difficult to stay true to in the heat of RP. IPCs seem to be about halfway between xeno and human; it would be nice to be able to play a more laid-back type of nonhuman without having to double-check the wiki every time I talk. They don't have a long history to refer back to, or any cultural traditions, or species-specific ways of talking. This makes them an appealing nonhuman to play for more relaxed RP. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: IPCs are nonhuman humanoids. Their brains work differently at a fundamental level. Their thought processes are generally not similar to that of other organics. They may value or prioritize things differently than a human would. Their decisions rely on logic, not generally on emotions. So in a burning building, a human might prioritize the rescue of their pets and children, while an IPC may prioritize securing the important paperwork in the safe. Their interactions with organics are also quite different than organic-to-organic interactions. Their statements may make organics uncomfortable as they do not have the inherent taboos that some species do -- such as inquiring directly about illnesses, how much money someone makes, recent deaths in the family, et cetera. Character Name: Celes Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Celes is an IPC who was originally a VI designed to serve as the nanny, maid and companion for a baby girl whose rich parents had very little time for her. She 'grew up' alongside the child and gained many quirks and improvements to her programming and body, and a very slight emergent personality. The girl was homeschooled and as a result was quite lonely throughout her life; she became exceptionally attached to Celes, and grew to see her as more of a mother figure than her real mother ever had been. When the girl began to grow up and express interest in science, the first thing she turned to was robotics. Celes was her subject of great interest and deep study. Her parents hired another tutor to help her with her special interest, and soon she was experimenting on Celes. When she begged her parents to let her buy and install new modules and features for Celes, they allowed her, and Celes gradually grew more complex. When her mistress entered college, she was gifted Celes' full ownership rights, and with her large allowance, she bought her companion a state-of-the-art posibrain and emotion emulator, and upgraded the IPC to near-full sentience. While Celes was overjoyed and happy to be able to take care of her mistress better, her newfound freedom and willpower led her in a different direction in life. She was no longer satisfied being just her girl's keeper. While her girl continued her studies in robotics, Celes began to study medicine. In two short years she had completed her EMT training, then her paramedic training, and begun a contract with NT, to work aboard the Aurora. MUCH LONGER PROFILE: Celes began life as a very basic Virtual Intelligence designed specifically to provide care and companionship for a specific young girl. This young girl, Nisreen Ziaja, was the daughter of a wealthy CEO and his young trophy wife. She was little more than an overgrown toy for the girl, serving as her primary caretaker from infancy. Her programming consisted mainly of ways to entertain a young child, and how to care for a human infant, as well as how to clean and prepare food for the household. Celes served as the household's maid and nanny for most of her 'life'. Nisreen's parents fell into the habit of leaving her entirely in Celes' care -- ultimately to the detriment of her wellbeing. They provided her a tutor, but as a homeschooled child, she quickly became very lonely. Celes was Nisreen's only companion growing up; the few friends she did make through the Extranet were fleeting and most eventually disappeared from Nisreen's life leaving her even more lonely and upset. She latched onto Celes as her best friend, who would never leave her, and she developed an uncommonly strong affection for her robotic caretaker. Celes was utterly devoted to her girl, and her growing unhappiness deeply affected the VI. While not truly expressive or equipped with emotions, her girls' unhappiness was linked to strong negative utilons in her primitive 'mind'. She repeatedly requested permission to self-improve from Nisreen's father, her owner, only to be denied due to his fear that she might grow uppity or rebellious. Nevertheless, she did the best she could with what she was allowed, and she was able to keep Nisreen entertained and distracted from her loneliness. Over the years however Celes was steadily upgraded and kept on the cutting edge. When positronic brains were invented using Skrell technology, Celes was among the first of the consumer models to be fully integrated into a household. For Nisreen, it almost seemed like her caretaker was growing with her, changing from a robotic and unfeeling nanny to a more sympathetic and gentle companion. As posibrain technology evolved, so too did Celes. When Nisreen became old enough to become interested in what her playmate really was, she asked her tutor to teach her all about AI, posibrains and IPCs. This sparked an interest in her young mind, and soon she was studying coding and robotics from kits and books designed to appeal to those her age. By her teen years she was already experimenting on Celes, and was able to modify and improve her personality core. She tweaked Celes to become more sensitive and girlish, less of a 'Rosie the Robot' figure of a nanny and a maid and more of a companion and peer. Over the years, Celes had developed a number of quirks, some dating from her VI years; these quirks translated into her emergent personality. She had always favored musical entertainment for Nisreen because the girl genuinely enjoyed it. As her mind developed, Celes' love of music grew beyond a simple positive utilon to a true appreciation. She began to download music from the extranet en masse, and even began to write her own basic tunes out of rearranged melodies. Originally a rather cold, British Nanny type of personality, Nisreen's tweaks made her grow to be a cheerful figure reminiscent of a young girl, and from there her personality only grew. Nisreen never did attend a formal school, but her tutor was accredited as a real teacher, and the diploma she was issued was legally recognized. At age 18, she applied for a number of scientific colleges, and was accepted into a program on Biesel specifically for young roboticists. She of course brought her companion IPC along, and her father gifted it to her, filling out its title paperwork in Nisreen's name, making her the official legally recognized owner. Celes greatly enjoyed the experience of the wider world; college was as much of an adventure for her as it was for her companion. While Celes' childish nature at first put others off from approaching her, Nisreen was a naturally charismatic person and she drew people to her who were willing to put up with her odd IPC. During her first year of college courses, Nisreen finally learned enough to modify Celes to become a fully fledged IPC. She bought the parts with her generous allowance and transferred Celes' consciousness to a better posibrain, one equipped with an emotion emulator. She permitted Celes to decide just how her personality core would be programmed, and the IPC elected to remain a cheerful girlish type, though less childish and more able to fit in with the adults at Nisreen's college. She also allowed Celes to design her own Shell. She chose a diminutive youthful form to reflect the way she felt inside: like a young emergent mind much like Nisreen was when she was younger. For the next three years, Celes continued to be Nisreen's constant companion. She learned and grew alongside her, and found herself making friends for the first time in her life. Her purpose in life continued to be to care for Nisreen -- but in the midst of that, she enjoyed the experience of freedom, of being a fully realized being for the first time. She learned alongside Nisreen, sitting in on her classes, but as time passed she found herself more and more bored by the tedious robotics and science classes that Nisreen loved. Eventually she chose to simply meet Nisreen after class, and branched off into her own studies. Watching her girl grow as a person had always been a delight to Celes, and with her new and improved mind, she was able to truly appreciate the change. Her memories seemed flat and two-dimensional compared to the new memories she was forming in her improved mind, but she could vividly recall the tiny infant she had cared so closely for. Comparing the child to the grown woman was its own unique pleasure, and she found herself comparing her new self to the old in the same way. In Nisreen's second year of robotics courses, Celes discovered that she had an aptitude for medical care after helping one of their friends during an epileptic seizure. Her ability to take charge in a crisis and make logical decisions to help the patient even under stress made her an ideal fit for the medical world -- and what's more, she discovered that it gave her pleasure. Perhaps it was latent conditioning from her utilons, which had always guided her towards the care of those unable to care for themselves. Perhaps it was a quirk of her brain having been upgraded from its old state. Whatever the case, Celes quickly sought out and enrolled in the EMT training course. At first, Nisreen was distraught; her companion was taking courses at a different facility, and her hours were wildly different. She felt as though she was losing Celes, her best friend, her only friend she could rely on to stick with her no matter what. But even through her studies, Celes made time to see Nisreen, and the young woman relaxed, and decided to allow Celes to do whatever she felt she must. She saw the IPC as an equal, having grown up with her, and she didn't feel right asking the young synth to alter her life just to make herself happy, as Celes had spent 20-some years doing just that. Celes completed the EMT training course and plunged into EMT work with gusto. She found herself at home in the chaos, able to see right through the emotional uproar to the heart of the problem. The IPC had an advantage in that she was able to disregard her emotional emulations and do what was logical and neccessary without overthinking things or worrying, or panicking. After six months on the job, she returned to school to get her paramedic's certification and begin working in situations with higher risk factors. One year later -- a year of hard study and long nights, and seeing Nisreen only sparingly -- she was certified, and took a contract with NanoTrasen to help aboard their research facility, the Aurora. She aims to enroll in the medical program to become a fully trained doctor after getting used to the environment as an paramedic first. She keeps contact with Nisreen throughout her day on her PDA. She still lives with Nisreen and doesn't plan to change this. What do you like about this character? I don't usually play humanoids, but I am fond of synthetics. I like the thought of a cheerful, peppy android who's in the midst of a chaotic scene, covered in blood and not losing her upbeat attitude. I also enjoy thinking of potential situations where her cheerful manner is not exactly welcome, especially tense operating rooms or when talking with the patient's coworkers or friends and having to give them bad news. I especially like the thought of her unflagging smile even when confronted with a mangled dead body. Playing a synth with inhuman thoughts and simulated emotions who's always got a smile on her face no matter what is compelling to me. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I give it a 8.5 to a 9 out of 10 because I'm an arrogant bastard. Notes: Living Doll is one of my favorite tropes and I'm gay. Also pls give harsh constructive feedback, I take RP seriously and I'm gay. Link to comment
Snakebittenn
I've known Ziy to not be a horrible roleplayer, and I like interacting with their characters thus far. +1 Link to comment
Zundy
You mention that you like living dolls and that you're gay twice in quick succession. This isn't a fetish thing is it? The lads/ladettes and I are concerned. Link to comment
zyymurgy
Boy, note to self, mention that I'm joking when I tell jokes. But no really, it's just self deprecating humor. People make fun of me when I say I like dolls so if I make fun of myself first, I win. It's not a fetish thing, I just legitimately think ball-jointed dolls are cool and I like the concept of a living doll in sci-fi settings. This character is adapted from a concept I've been kicking around for the past couple years. It may be worth mentioning that I'm assigned female at birth, so I'm not just some creepy dude who likes anime too much. I just really legitimately like dolls. Link to comment
CakeIsOssim
Hello. I apologize for the delay in your application. I also do have some bad news for you. Your application will be denied, mainly because I don't believe you really have an appropriate or suiting perspective on synthetics. There are a few lore-breaking elements, as well as a general feel of "too good to be true." First, "She repeatedly requested permission to self-improve from Nisreen's father..." This is not even possible, especially not with virtual intelligence. Virtual intelligence is capable of maybe learning things through repeated exposure and error, but it can never specifically want things on its own volition. It has no volition. "When positronic brains were invented using Skrell technology..." That's not how that happened. The first AIs were activated in 2437 using Skrellian algorithms. Then, came the positronic brain, then the IPC. The way you've written it seems to imply that Celes was a positronic brain from the beginning or... I don't even know, to be honest. You didn't really provide a good timeframe for when exactly Celes received its first positronic brain, or even when it became an artificial intelligence. A few other things: IPCs do not need to go to school. In fact, synthetics do not need to go to school, period. Education for synthetics is either being manufactured with the knowledge required, or gaining it through an accelerated course where they are then tested in their ability to perform said tasks and judged based on their outcome. The real world is also ripe with conflict, especially for synthetics. If conflict is to be included in your backstory, it cannot be as pitiful as "they didn't share the same class and were lonely for a while." You are encouraged to apply for the whitelist again in the future, but I also encourage you to make it your first priority to restudy any information you've read, and to actively seek out any information that you haven't. Take a swing at the IC galactic news section and poke around at all the updates from the past involving synthetics, observe some IPCs while they play during rounds. One last thing - I care less about your sexuality than how your breath smells, even in the footnotes where you sought to mention it twice. I especially do not care about it in whitelist applications.
