I think I had to use a different browser to get it to work. Once you have a unique cover image I feel like it's easier but it's been so long I might be wrong.

not sure where to look though, the "edit profile" menu has nothing related to it strangely enough

I did it with the old forums. Idk if it's possible anymore. If it is, then it's some asshole-design thing where you can't tell wwithout going through a bajillion things.
