BYOND Key: Absynth Total Ban Length: 24 hours Banning staff member's Key: Garnascus Reason of Ban: I memed Reason for Appeal: I think this is pretty ridiculous considering I've had it part of my character's RP for weeks now, that she is an amateur meme historian. Ask Adam Woods. Garnascus got in a tiff and while I did continue after he 'warned' me about it, I was doing so as a part of my character's RP and feel that a 24 hour ban for a first offense about something so stupid is a little much.

[Accepted] Alien Whitelist App - Unbound Vaurca
Absynth replied to Absynth's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Ah, the color should have been red, not yellow. The wiki was pretty vague about noting the intelligence of each caste; the idea was Ein would have shown enough cleverness and grasp of tactics in the VR, and be trained there, to be designated as something beyond just a mere grunt. The aggression and love of aggression serve two purposes- to give the hive a good excuse for getting rid of Ein, and to function as a contrasting character hook; barely restrained hostility kept in check by a genuine interest in science. This forces people to look past the obvious "oh shit huge angry bug monster" to see a frustrated being that honestly wants to improve itself, but has no real concept of how to do that. As for the bluespace thing -- lorewise the Gibson colony has all kinds of mysterious tech built by the Vaurca, I just felt it stood to reason that they would be interested in the possibility of integrating new and exciting stuff that they haven't seen before. Theft is probably too strong a word; I meant it more like learning how all that blue space stuff works and is built (Ie. taking a suspiciously deep interest in it), not actually grabbing stuff and running off with it. -
I'm not talking about taking off your helmet in space. I'm talking about turning off your air tank while you are still wearing a full hardsuit, and instantly getting bleeding lungs.
-
Currently, if you're in space and you toggle off your air tank or even just drop it for more than a half a second, you will instantly get lung damage that will probably kill you very fast (or very slow if you're lucky). This is pretty stupid considering that there should be air in your helmet or you should be able to hold your breath. It should be checking to see if you have a helmet on before it starts destroying your chest cavity.

Well, yeah. Of course people will want them. That's the point. -People who already have basic chargen prosthetics and want an upgrade, or to test out the latest models. -For weapons, see also: Vaurca, security officers, CCIA, anyone with an implant, cyborgs.. anyone with a fist..

BEHOLD! ALL 11 MECH FIGURINES IN ONE SHIFT!
Absynth replied to Absynth's topic in Denied Applications
Added the template formatting, whoops. -
Huh? I'm science every shift and I have never once gotten or even seen a single request of any kind from medbay.
-
This game is better than Dwarf Fortress. Yeah, I said it. I played DF since pre-Boatmurdered, something like 18 damn years ago, and have played every version since. I never use graphics packs, only ascii, and I've had a lot of neat stories come out of the game. However, Rimworld is much, much more accessible, the GUI is infinitely better, the game is far more intuitive in basically every system it uses, and it still has the DF-y 'feel' to it that only this specific niche of game can provide. You can never have enough chickens

The medical tree in research is.. kind of lame. Medbay never, ever asks you for any cool high tech toys and will rarely, if ever actually use them even if you bring some to Medbay. The only decent thing even in there is the advanced laser scalpel. So instead I'd like to propose adding more, and upgradeable, biomechanical augmentations, implants, and body parts, and allow R&D to create smaller items and implants with Robotics assemblies building prosthetic parts. It would be best if Robotics got an actual prosthetic fabricator instead of using the usual ones. Some examples: Basic external prosthetics are available by default in Robo, as they are now. Rather than use robot arms, these should be turned into actual seperate items. By default, players spawn with these. Upgraded external prosthetics need low-medium levels in engineering, materials, and medical. These limbs grant bonus resistance to damage; upgraded prosthetic legs improve your run speed slightly while arms increase your melee damage (perhaps 5-10%). Advanced external prosthetics require medium-high levels in the above, and also grant a degree of shock resistance, fire resistance, and resist pressure damage. Prototype external prosthetics are slightly different. These are instead oriented and specialized towards specific tasks, rather than general purpose - for instance, let's say combat, and engineering. Combat prosthetics are probably obvious, increasing general combat abilities, but also perhaps adding cool stuff like making projectiles miss less often (gyroscopically stabilized), actually deflecting bullets if the hands are free, or leaping across multiple tiles. Engineering prosthetics would grant shock immunity, the ability to conjure any tool into the hand, and legs grant the effects of magboots without the speed loss. These prosthetics would be expensive, require very high levels, and have a chance of failure when used, but should grant significant bonuses. That's just for external limbs; currently the game does not allow you to print internal parts, however. Internal parts are a different story. By default again all internal parts should be available in prosthetic form. I was playing xenoflora the other day and had such massive toxin damage that my liver actually was destroyed, and there was no way to replace it at all. You would think that they'd have prosthetic hearts and livers and lungs and whatnot by now, right? Considering they already exist in the present day.. The stock internal parts would simply be equal or less efficient than the biological equivalent, but of course subject to EMP as usual - you can start in chargen with bionic eyes or a heart but they don't do anything but make you instantly die to EMPs, as far as I can tell. Instead, internal prosthetics should be widely varied, with perhaps alien equivalent parts being made available at higher research levels. Improved or prototype prosthetics should be available as well, Deus Ex style -- eyes that allow you built-in meson or night vision goggles, a prototype liver that can filter any toxin out, lungs that can convert CO2 into breathable air, the only limit is the dev's creativity. All activateable or advanced prosthetics should use body glucose for energy, thus making you hungrier each time you use them. In addition, each of the different manufacturer brands should do something very slightly different. I'm not talking a noticeable difference, but something to actually differentiate them mechanically instead of all being identical would be neat. Ie: Hephaestus Industries prosthetics have 5 more health each. Zeng-Hu Pharma prosthetics can be detached and removed at any time by the wearer without needing surgery. etc. etc. In conclusion, a more robust and genuinely useful prosthetic/augment system would make things much more interesting for both Science and Medical, allowing some much-needed collaboration between departments.

Allow wearing various flowers/plants in your hair similar to flower pins
Absynth replied to SierraKomodo's topic in Archive
I'd actually prefer them going on the ear slot, the 2nd slot is barely ever used. The thing is though you'd have to meticulously go through and pick and choose plants, and then design a new on-person sprite for each one, and that's some work. -
[Accepted]Head of Staff Whitelist Application: Synnono
Absynth replied to Synnono's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
This app is barely even needed, of course Synnono is gonna get it. +10 -
Adam Woods and Sofia Pennington spent 2 hours, 25 minutes in the bar with 2 arcade machines. The goal: get every single one of the 11 mech action figures. They are extremely hard to get since there are something like 120 prizes. At the very last second, literally 50 seconds before the shuttle was to leave. We get the seraph. 11/11. Early on we also got a plush space carp (that says Glorf! every time you poke it) so we dubbed it Glorf Day. BYOND key: Absynth Character names of all involved: Sofia Pennington, Adam Woods Documentation of the event, Link to post/Screenshot in game. If multiple screenshots please compose an album: See above Have you read the application rules??: y Have you made sure this incident didn't result in administrative action? y Why does this moment deserve a spot in the Hall Of Fame?: We got all 11 mechs in one shift. As far as I am aware this has never been completed on any server.

[Accepted] Alien Whitelist App - Unbound Vaurca
Absynth replied to Absynth's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
The difficulty in saying 'how are they different' is it's an extremely vague question, since they're two totally different species. I've read all the wiki, all the lore forums, and pretty much everything about the Vaurca (even went through the source a bit), watched District 9 something like 40 times (it's one of my favorite movies!) are pretty much the most up to date I can get on them since there are so few in game. It seemed to me like the question was more seeing if you could accurately portray a vaurca as opposed to a human, rather than describing all the actual details that make them different. Obviously they are an alien race and are nothing like humans; that's the very draw of playing one, to 'get inside' the head of something completely alien (in the adjective sense). My style of RP doesn't give a ton of thought to specifics about the character - I have to actually play it and get a feel for how the character behaves, so I can make it truly believable. I'm nothing like Sofia or Sunzhou in real life (maybe a bit of Sofia..), and it took me maybe 3 or 4 days playing each before I settled into a solid rhythm with them, but once the teething process is over, you don't need any effort at all to maintain the character. Not having either other Vaurca around nor a specific game-culture for them like Tajarans allows a pretty huge amount of flexibility with RP, which is difficult for human characters since they generally require more effort to make them less 'been there, done that'. -
BYOND Key: Absynth Character Names: Sofia Pennington, Helena Jimjams, Sunzhou Xiao, Grandma (AI), RusComm Emergency AI (AI), Serena Johnson Species you are applying to play: Vaurca. What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Yellow, probably. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: They seem more interesting and less generic than the other races. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Vaurca remind me a lot of the prawns from District 9, which I assume they were based off of. The idea of a true hive mind race without the overlordship is a very interesting concept for a player character and I think a difficult challenge to play accurately and believably. I am always up for a challenge. Character Name: Za'Akaix'Ein Zo'ra. The Ein is short for Einstein, which Za'Akaix'Ein cannot pronounce. Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Excerpt of Audio Log-4 Series-BA Day 1: "" Day 3: "Live. I. Am here." Day 12: "Zlow. Move zo sslowly here. I awake but not. Learn. Not same. Want home. Back home. But izz gone forever." Day 26: "I learn, but zlower. beingz pink, weak, but zzzzo clever. I want to tear them- " Day 32: "Once I learn war. War iz good. The pulze and flow of the dance, the turgid lymph filling all veins to bursting. grow violent thinking of the glory. Glory for the Zo'ra! But now the pinkz cast their eyes away, and we work az one, but NOT azs one. The pink onez do not know of the chorus, or the greatness of the Hive." Day 64: "Long for home. Long for paradise. Thiz univerze so slow! SO SSLOW! I move like , compared to moving in Paradise. I ztill zee it when I rest." Day 89: "There iz greater thirzt than war, greater glory than death. World zo slow, but I learn and I learn. Zecretz of the univerzzze! Hu-manz. Clever, zzzo clever they break zzo many fabrics of all thingzzz. Time, zzpace, energy- they do not rezpect the fabric, they flaunt it! And zzzo they achieve thingzzz never before pozzible. Perhapzz they will help ." Day 312: "New Gibzon, good plaze for Hive. Once, would fight for New Gibzon, tear all enemy hivez with tooth and claw until lymph, bright and thick, spills from all foes and strangers. But now I learn that iz not the way forward. Forward iz in zience, in breaking the fabriczz of all things. Become the mazter, learn all knowledge, and Zo'ra reigns. Pink onez say, to do work of humans, or stay on Gibzon? I do most good learning pink human thingz and bring back to Hive. We grow strong and destroy all other hivezz, but only in time. When time iz ready, we will rize again, and paradise will be waiting." Day 313: "Implants are completed. Exoduzz? Home for now. Strange name. Hope I do not kill any soft humanz. They do not tolerate it, I have learn. Will be good. Even accept soft human-meat name, but it iz name of great pink learner. I will learn. Name is Einzzzt. Eye-nnnz-tine. Einzzzsh-- " Za'Ein is an Unbound Zo'ra of the warrior caste - once responsible for tactics and strategy for an entire wing of warships, Ein never actually got to use those skills as it remained in VR until the arrival of Titan Prime on Biesel. Ein was first sent to Biesel, then New Gibson. From Gibson, Ein was sent to the Exodus, and from there managed to convince NT to make it a lab assistant rather than a janitor or laborer. Though Ein's ultimate goal is the theft of bluespace technology to help the colony on New Gibson, this mission is secondary to simply absorbing as much as possible. Ein is often quick to act and judge, gets frustrated and angered easily, but genuinely wants to learn. It is eight feet tall, and a golden-yellow color. What do you like about this character? It's something different. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Fairly strong. It's kind of hard to "rate" a role playing ability, honestly; I put a lot of work and effort into my RP, so I suppose that counts. Hello. I am here. I will protect your zzoft, pink meatzz.

[Denied] Absynth's Head of Staff App

I only ever release out of control plants when I am antagonist. Surely if I actually did any of the above I would have been job banned by now. I think if you ask anybody I work with regularly they'll have a vastly different opinion. You need to look past the rumor. -

I actually prefer, as most assistants who've studied under Sofia know, to have other people do the work while I look on and munch Donk Pockets. There's never a shift where there's nowhere empty in R&D; there's always something I can busy myself with if things get slow, so I'm not too worried about Sofia getting all up in everyone's business all the time and doing their work for them. As for the rule-breaking.. I think it's best to look at the situation much like a university with a professor. While many profs will follow the regulations to the letter (as best they can remember them), there will always be a few who flaunt such regulations and tend to get away with it simply because they excel at their job and get genuine, cost-efficient results. Indeed, in any workplace you'll find eccentric individuals or those who tend to defy authority -- Sofia as Research Director would be the kind of RD that people don't have to be afraid about approaching with their bizarre or dangerous science project ideas without feeling like they're being buried in paperwork. Minimal effort - enough to please Corporate - maximum results. -
BYOND key: Absynth Character names: Sofia Pennington How long have you been playing on Aurora?: I'm not actually sure. At least 6 months? Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I feel I can bring something a bit different to the RD position, which is often empty at crucial times. Why did you come to Aurora?: I'm strongly attracted to heavy roleplay. Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is pure immersion, and immersion is believability. It's not enough to simply see a person talking and respond to them; it's not enough to simply behave like you would in Real Life; the real goal of roleplay is in making people see beyond what's on the screen. You can't just pretend to be someone, you have to be them. Think like them. Immerse yourself in their world - yet always maintaining a level of out of character awareness in order to accurately and properly separate the two. Roleplay is action and excitement, it's energy and making things happen. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: I feel a head of staff is fundamental in tying a department together on a long term basis and fostering RP and encouraging at a base level. The lamest part of the game is when people go SSD because there's nothing to do - it's the ultimate goal of a head of staff to push their subordinates and keep them active and interested in their jobs. The actual work itself is secondary (or success, which is optional) - it's making the work fun that's important. Heads of staff provide a raft of security and safety in an otherwise chaotic workplace, a clearly in-sight individual who will listen to their grievances and can actually do something about it. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Ultimately a whitelisted player has the responsibility to maintain a level of exemplary roleplay that other players can use as a standard for themselves as well as a level of competence in whatever they do, that proves they actually deserve it; whether it means having a complex backstory for a species, or knowing your department inside and out as a research director. There's always some minimum of effort required. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Sofia Pennington. Character age: 35 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Sofia is a young, fearless seeker of ultimate truth in the universe. Her pampered and spoiled upbringing on Mars primarily instilled her with a fervent thirst for knowledge and a general lack of personal safety standards. Rumor has it she was given some kind of advanced genetic intelligence therapy as a child, which gave her both an eccentric personality and an IQ over 200. While she might not particularly care about her own safety, Sofia has repeatedly risked her own life to save those of co-workers and has racked up just as many commendations and awards for her work as she has warnings. What do you like about this character?: Dr. Pennington is a blast to play. I know all areas of science pretty well and I can play her with a good degree of both competence and riskiness. Though she's been arrested once or twice, she's settled down a bit in more recent months. What do you dislike about this character?: Occasionally, playing Sofia almost goads me into going more over the top than I'd expected; she's the kind of character that will risk losing her job in order to make a weaponized tomato. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Honestly, Sofia has a lot of black marks on her record, but just as many successes - probably more so, really. She's average-to-competent in a wide range of fields and is capable of filling in when places are empty. Most importantly she's well known as being a constant presence in R&D and one who never backs down from a challenge, and I think a small degree of legitimacy would go a long way in both tempering Sofia's behavior and the reactions of her co-workers to her.. various shenanigans. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I would say my roleplaying is strong. I play believable, flawed, colorful characters that have goals, dreams, and philosophies. I have excellent improvisation skills and have adminned my own RP games (and DM'd many D&D sessions) many, many times in the past.
