[2 Dismissals] Security/Medical authority over the deceased
witchbells replied to MO_oNyMan's topic in Rejected Policy
This thread has been sitting here for a little while now. I'm voting for dismissal of this. Synnono and I are in agreement that this policy isn't necessary for a variety of reasons both IC and OOC, and I'll summarize. 1. The general consensus is that cloning is time sensitive. 2. People are not expected to die get murdered. This is irrefutable - it is a standard that administration also goes by to prevent powergaming. The CSI is there as a precautionary measure, just like the armory is. Again, the CSI is here for a worst case scenario. To expect that everything is a worst case scenario, frankly put, is leaning into Bad Territories of metagaming and powegaming. 3. You want doctors to handle biohazards first, and no matter how you look at it, a corpse is a biohazard. I understand that a CSI has the necessary training to deal with a corpse as well, but considering the number of things that could have gotten into a corpse on a research station, you want those people in scrubs to touch the body first. Here is my recommendation if you're having problems dealing with people in character. Communicate. You do not need to bludgeon people with authority in most situations. If you think there's something up, coordinate with medical. This will be up for a week more before it's archived. -
nursie's (skrell) lore dev app
witchbells replied to witchbells's topic in Developer Applications Archives
I did touch on the second-class citizen thing. It's pretty well established that the Federation has claims to swathes of space and the planets within it, but there's a facet of the retaking of Skrellian space that would be more interesting, but perhaps somewhat more difficult to write into our universe. Loow has spoken to me about just how many planets the skrell (and/or the Federation) have colonized before. I think it would be wonderful if we wrote down more about the undertaking involved in colonization. I think with the size of the Federation, it's potentially a very important part of their culture, and that some colonization efforts would be historically relevant - for better or for worse. The Federation, as I understand it, is huge. I think the Jargon Federation is a nice, shiny government, in the sense that it doesn't seem to do a lot of wrong. Most of what we see of it is cute human pop culture references and cordial intergalatic relations. I think it would be fun to explore that. Also, in no surprising turn of events, my favorite section is the biology section. I love sandboxing really weird anatomy, and biological and medical sciences, and the skrell have..just, so much to work with. I would love to write up more weird disorders and diseases for them. -
No. Players should not be crippled for the sake of antagonists being able to put less effort into their game.

What is your ckey?: NursieKitty Can you be contacted through discord?: Yes. I can also be contacted via steam if I'm in a game. What is your timezone and what are your most active hours?: My "active hours" AKA sleep schedule is an absolute disaster, but I typically wake up after noon and fall asleep some time before six in the morning. My timezone is EST. Would you be able to discuss Lore and Lore-work a minimum of once a week?: Yes! I'm on discord just about all day. Do you have any previous writing experience?: I do! I have work now, I can say that! Xrim Volvuunt Qixqalau Which of the following best represents your age group: C. 20 - 26 years old What whitelists do you currently possess on Aurora Station?: I have unathi, tajara, skrell, and IPC. Have you ever been banned from Aurora Station?: I have not. Have you ever had a whitelist stripped on Aurora Station?: I have not. What’s your most active character?: It's been fluctuating between Zuhzir and Aserok lately, a tajaran and an unathi. Is there anything you would like the reader to keep in mind while reading your Application for Skrell Lore Deputy?: I'd really like to be able to keep writing tidbits for the various species as a Skrell lore deputy and submitting them, just like I have as someone who wasn't part of the lore team. I think our universe is a really good backspring for creation. Pick any 5 of the following 10 topics. Please answer your chosen 5 with a minimum of 50 words each. Skrell have a different perspective on Males and Females than Humans traditionally do. As a deputy, what would you do to illustrate this societal difference? I like the gender neutral angle of skrell for a multitude of reasons. It's fun to play with! And it's their whole society, it's fashion, pop culture, education, and behavior. I think it would be more interesting, however, to see how this plays off other species who have traditionally treated each gender differently, namely unathi and humans, but the tajara as well. I think it's a part of the reason why dionae and skrell have gotten along so well, though skrell may have different biological functions, dionae transcend this in all natures (and keep the skrell company for the entirety of their long, lonely lifespans.) Skrell and Synthetics have a very unique relationship. How do you feel about it? To say that skrell and synthetics have a nervous relationship at best would still be an understatement. What comes to my mind is the skrell article where someone was swatted. For reasons inconsequential, we see someone call in a fake tip that someone else had created an artificial intelligence (which, iirc, is banned in Federation space) and was in the process of transferring it to a faraday cage. What follows is two separate very swift operations involving police and the special forces. Now, I'm blatnantly glossing over some prejudice and elitism here, because I know that skrell are absolutely capable of it, but also because I think their response to this situation was incredibly interesting. I think it would be exciting to see a little more about how skrell deal with the threats of the synthetic menace on their own planets, and how these fears intertwine with pop culture. Skrell and Humans have a very unique relationship. How do you feel about it? On a basic level, I think skrell are very elitist towards humans. Their little governments bicker over planets (said the skrell, hiding Pluat behind a trash can) and about the different species, synthetics. No, especially synthetics! The humans had a synthetic come onto a stage and tell them that a singularity was probably going to happen in human space. A skrell asked the question. And humans got scared. But the humans didn't take any preventative measures, either! Leaving the skrell to simply watch them, in terror of what's to come, like watching someone hold a fork and just sit there staring at an electrical socket. Skrell and Unathi have a very unique relationship. How do you feel about it? I think the skrell see a lot of potential in the unathi. The unathi, unlike the other species, have realized the potential threat of synthetics, and are expanding and growing far faster than the tajara. The unathi have also engaged in a sort of (as I understand it) terraforming project to return Moghes to what it once was. I haven't read anything about the skrell giving them the technology, but I assume they've been guiding them in this endeavor somewhat, enabling them to truly learn and grow on their own. It's kind of sweet, actually. What sort of things do you like seeing in a News Article? How would you approach writing News Articles for Aurora Station Lore?: Despite all the heavy-hitting topics I've been talking about, I'd really love to see more about their own culture. The skell have this huge, expansive universe, with only just enough rules but a lot of unclaimed space, metaphorically. It's just ambiguous enough that one could likely create to your heart's content and still have rooms to fill. I would love to see more lighthearted facets of the skrell, not necessarily focusing on human culture, but on their own. I would like to see more of what makes them skrell. All of the following topics should be answered with a minimum of 20 words each. How do you feel about the Tup Commandos, Director of Tup Forces Qroisht Tup, and the historical characters with the surname “Tup”? I think the tups are delightfully overpowered! That's not a criticism, it's amazing! We saw them wipe out a Lii'dra force once, and personally, I would love to see them strike team more often. However, I think it's pretty apparent that I'm not exactly a military person. I don't know how to write them, and I'm certainly not familiar with how they function. It's certainly a muscle I wouldn't mind exercising, but I can assure you that I would need to do lots of reading and a few hours of Dead Space before I could coherently create something for it. How do you feel about Glorsh? I think Glorsh is a necessary kind of tragedy for the skrell. You have this species who are at the top of their game, they have extremely advanced technology, they live hundreds of years, an expert military force, everything. But something happened to them that enslaved their race, sterilized, and likely killed hundreds of them, and due to their lifespans, there are skrell who lived through this event who are still alive today, and it makes the threat of artificial intelligence all that more real and serious for skrell. What is your view on Skrell language and its use on the station? I think it's very complicated. As I understand it, the full range of emotions that skrell experience are impossibly hard to parse for other species, and leads to strange divides and general weirdness - in character. Out of character, I think how skrell deal with emotions needs to be written out a little more and detailed, the whys and hows of skrellian communication. I understand Loow has thoughts on it already, but I think it could be made more clear for players. What would you like to portray in lore as a Skrell Lore Deputy? I think the one theme I've stuck with throughout this application is that I'd like to know more about skrell themselves. I think skrell themselves are engaging! There's a lot to them that hasn't been explored, and that hands so much creativity to the playerbase! It's great! But I just feel like we don't have enough about them. I want to portray more about the skrell culture, and biology, and maybe some internal politics. We've seen how engaged players get when we involve species factions, spitting fights between tajara, free mars, all of it. All of this passion because it lets players pick a side and learn more about these little tiny details of the culture. I'm going on a tangent, but I hope what I'm getting at was coherent enough. I want to give the skrell something engaging. Do you have any gripes, comments, or concerns regarding the lore and/or the Skrell? The skrell don't exactly feel like an active species right now, not for lack of good worldbuilding, but because they don't really seem to do anything in the world. Every once in a while we'll have an article of skrell doing human stuff, but not a whole lot that tells us new things about them. A lot of the skrellian arcs seem to be about their relationships with other species, like they're a side character - they just aren't incredibly engaging as they are now. There's incredible amounts of potential, but it needs a spark to ignite.

[2 Dismissal] Policy about who handles a ban appeal.
witchbells replied to sdtwbaj's topic in Rejected Policy
This right here in particular. Ban appeals, more often than not, get tossed up in staff chat for us to notice it, and for the rest of us to look at it. I'm not saying that every ban appeal is 100% a collaborative effort, but what happens is that when it gets posted is that we all usually get a look at it and staff will chip in with their experiences. There have been some appeals that were discussed for days. It's a process, usually, and it's relatively effective in making sure a player isn't getting biased into oblivion. -

I am inclined to disbelieve. In this incident you were being detained for repetitively beating a synthetic, reportedly, because it insulted you, and continued to do so after you were ordered not to as security. Immediately after you were restrained, you ghosted and logged. You were being given a reduced sentence for vandalism. I witnessed the incident personally because I was playing a character nearby. You have an extensive history of poor security play, to such an extent that you were temporarily banned for it multikeyed to bypass it. The ban will stick.

Obliged. Adding to the fact that when pressed on the matter, the alternative was for them to use gear we didn't have (Ninja stole the ion early, ended up ordering a second). Simply put. Lethal force=Lethal Scenario, you are being put in mortal danger by participating in the scenario in any form, and refusing to adequately arm yourself, not follow the instructions of a superior, and yet still participate; puts yourself and others at needless risk None of this refutes the fact that heavily armed hostiles are not expected to appear on the station, as such, lethal force (in regards to people) would not be seen as necessary. I would go so far as to say that "NanoTrasen Security functions first and foremost as a mediator to conflict," even contradicts it, as mediator in most, if not all, circumstances refers to someone who brings conflict to a peaceful end. Yes, I still stand by my ruling that this is an IC issue. Such a man would quickly lose his job and not be allowed to reclaim it. As a command player, you have direct contact to CCIAA and full authority to remove a person from your department for almost any reason, and you are free to use this authority as you see fit. As for this complaint, you seem to both admit this was an IC issue and additionally admit you were not in the mood to deal with it ICly, and have demonstrated that you are well aware of how you can use your position as a head of security to prevent this from becoming an issue. -
Enforce a minimum vote of 25 votes for Crossfire
witchbells replied to a topic in Completed Projects
Frankly, the idea that people want to treat unreadying as honest-to-goodness griefing has me reeling in my chair, and looking around my room for a hidden camera because surely, this has to be a very horrible prank. If people do not want to play a roundtype, they should not be forced to play a roundtype. The minimum number of votes for crossfire to be voted does need to be raised. As it is with mercenary/raiders, crossfire is twice that, and should of course require more people. Apparently it already requires twenty five people! Good. -

I took this ahelp because Shame, iirc, asked me to look at it. I think that it was very easy to discern that it was an IC issue, especially after you had admitted it yourself in the ahelp. Now, there's a few chunks of this issue that I want to examine, first and foremost being the necessity of lethals in the situation. Firstly, the situation in which lethals are required - this was a ninja, and if I'm correct, things had escalated to a "hunt them down" situation, with all officers being issued lethal firearms, which I do think is an acceptable situation to refuse lethal arms. Were they actively in danger, I imagine their tone would change (after combing through the logs, I'm certain it would change) to actively protect themselves and the station. I disagree, also, with the notion implied that security officers are not allowed to be characters with moral objections to certain facets of their job. Security is not expected to need to resort to lethals within a shift, just like all officers are not expected to need death implants, or advanced weaponry, and as such, should not be ousted from security because they do object to these things. After combing through the logs of the round today, I'm actually finding dialogue that contrasts to what you're accusing them for. They advocated for lethal action far before you did and did not refuse to use them for the entirety of the round - though it was only after some haranguing. I did confirm with other administration that this refers to a lethal laser beam. There were multiple instances of this. They did continue to morally object over communications throughout the round and I witnessed them personally carrying an ion rifle later one, when I started looking into it. This could mean one of a few things, on the officer's side: A. ) They were verbally objecting due to personal morality, but carrying out orders regardless. B. ) They are mechanically inexperienced. There are a few things about the character that make this seem likely. C. ) They wanted to aggravate you, for some reason, as a result of actions during the round. It is completely understandable that you were frustrated with this character. It is excruciatingly difficult to apprehend or kill a ninja who teleports every which way at any given time. I hold my stance regarding the ruling, especially after coming through the logs of the round. -
I'll put it plainly. Traumas are nothing but an obnoxious gimmick that was forced on the playerbase. They add nothing to the game other than more tedious hoops to jump through for the general populace and medical, even more so because there's way to deal with them and yet another that doesn't work, or only works temporarily, serving only to fuck people over in what I assume is a shoddy execution of adding hamfisted consequences for dying or getting hurt. They do nothing for the players and they should be removed. Not replaced.
-
Come on now, OwOot, we have these pages for a reason, they aren't even restricted! I do not think it is very reasonable for me to have to watch multiple unofficial discord servers in order to provide feedback on an official server development project. It isn't reasonable. These discords are extremely low priority, and while it seems the only saving grace may have been that the mappers actually asked for feedback from medical players this time, the proof in the pudding is that what got implemented is something a majority of the playerbase did not want.
-
Revert it. The medical map is the bane of the vast majority of medical players, for many reasons, in addition to the many, many reasons that have already been posted. It is a cramped, impractical labyrinth that players waste more time navigating than it takes to actually treat a patient, not to mention that it is an utter eyesore.

If other, replace line and specify.) Overview of the Incident: Late into the shift, the chief engineer manipulated telecomms scripts to mimic Linerbord's voice over common. I was next to her at the time, and can confirm it was not her saying those things. When I aired my grievances over the security channel, my superior called me into his office and confessed to not only knowing the chief engineer did it, but that he was ordered to cover for her when she was accused of doing it. I was also told that the captain allowed this and ordered my superior to cover for her. It is my thoughts that this is a gross misuse of command authority and sensitive machinary. Did you report it to a Head of Department or IAA? If so, who?: My superior told me not to bother making a complaint when we were speaking privately, because Nanotrasen would not care. I quote, "Someone could shoot someone else and it would barely reach their desks." Actions taken: No actions were taken. Additional Notes: I have also been told that this is not the first time they have done this.

After a lot of thought, I've decided to accept. Please remember that this is a "last chance" situation. You need to give our rules more than a cursory glance this time around and consider before you act. With that, I'm locking and archiving. Appeal accepted.
-
I'm going to be honest. You have a very extensive history of warnings, in addition to a diverse array of bans. A cursory search pulls up that this is more or less the same story for you on other servers. It also hasn't been a very long time since the ban. I don't see any kind of assurance that the behavior you've been sporting won't continue.

I see you grabbed some images and left out your reply, and the context. Let me get that for you. These were your responses to the perceived harassment. Not "this is starting to feel personal," or even "you're taking this a little far." At no point did you even privately contact me to tell me that you were feeling attacked, that everyone was harassing you by dumping on your character. Just "rip" to do what, I assume, is you pretending you're in on a joke. And from what I've been told, this is very close to common behavior for you, being willfully reluctant to acknowledge criticisms of your character, and when it is put in front of you like so, you feign complacency. You are responsible for yourself. Your own actions and your own feelings. You cannot expect people to be considerate of your feelings when you aren't honest with them. As I've said before, you only come to me just now - After this has been going on for approximately a month when you have done little else but let others presume you ambivalent to what you perceived as harassment. Not once did you come to me during this time, despite that you have said I've made many ugly comments OOC, and even inspired others to do the same. I am not liable for harassing you when I was not even aware that you objected to the behavior. The more and more I look at this, it looks like it very much is about criticizing your character. I've never said anything about you as a person, nor do I know anything about you, and as Schev posted, the only incidents of what you perceived as harassment was myself mocking your character. -

I might hit the word count limit. I want to preface by this by saying that I am aware I have a very obnoxious, aggressive sense of humor. I am playfully confrontational with most people (all kinds, from non-staff to Garnascus) on Aurora because I have known many of these people for years. I'm also very aware that this is not everyone's cup of tea. It is perfectly fine to come to me and say that you're uncomfortable with this, if you've ever adminhelped something, you can gather that I'm not always Like That. What you have referred to as "toxic and angry" is most likely banter. It is mutually shared. I also want to clarify that you are not obligated to enjoy this humor. You just have to tell me. With that out of the way, let's move on. I will begin detailing the incident the spawned this complaint. Don't worry about not having pictures, because I have plenty for the both of us. They are unedited, because I will not be accused of clipping the logs. I've separated it into parts. *Edited to remove the ckey of an innocent bystander. This is what you perceived as passive aggression. You were wearing the "nurse dress" that nurses spawn in in addition to a pair of white dress flats. Let me go into why that's an issue for a moment. In addition, I threatened to file an injunction. An incident report is something that is handled by CCIAA. An injunction is something that is handled by security and command. Here is the injunction form, just to demonstrate my point. This was all IC. And that's fine. I wasn't bothered until the string of events that came after. You left the round after being threatened with the barest amount of IC discipline, you insulted me in OOC, and insulted me more in the general discord where I was not even present. I have criticized your character, many times, as have others, in public. Out of the handful other characters I currently play, Zuhzir Mansurhani has actually openly insulted your character, and has his reasons for doing so. You seem reluctant at best to open up any dialogue concerning this character, or to confront people OOC about their misgivings (of which there are many, as you have said.) All of this has happened while you did not confront me to talk about these things or tell me that I had overstepped a boundary. But to insult me, call me passive aggressive, and accuse me of metagrudging you while telling me to grow up of all the things - the irony is not lost on me. -

Hey there. This thing has been sitting for a while so I'm going to be quick. Trick and I have been discussing both the incidents in question, and while we're in favor of pardoning the tongue-in-cheek joke about space wizards (plenty of people do this, there's nothing wrong with it. Your worst crime here was perhaps being a tad too on the nose about it.) the incident where you play a drunken engineer setting up the engine is absolutely an issue, mostly for IC reasons. As the admin liaison for CCIA, I can confirm that this is precisely what would have happened. Anyone working such sensitive equipment while under the influence would very possibly be dropped for the first incident, or in a best case scenario, suspended and demoted. CCIAA would most likely be aware of your character's alcoholism or would soon find out if it was such a common problem, and would not be allowing him near the engine until they and medical professionals were sure he could stay sober after some time. I'll leave this open for a bit longer just in case someone has issues. -
Maximum Qualification Ceiling - A Very Important Policy Discussion
witchbells replied to a topic in General
I am not interested in a qualification ceiling in the slightest. Skull calls it "the pinnacle of pedantry" which describes this absolute rubbish to a T. We have minimum qualifications. Adding maximum qualifications forces players to write characters within a tiny aisle of qualification. I am not willing to restrict players like this. I am not willing to restrict creative freedom for something that is little more than boldfaced pedantry. -

I don't think this is going to work out. This is your second permaban, in addition to three other temporary bans, and multiple warnings on your account, spanning back to the middle of 2017, with very consistent notes and a very clear message. Despite multiple assurances that you will read the rules, you clearly have not, and you continue to break them. Appeal denied.

This is a really fun question! I look forward to this kind of stuff if I get accepted. I don't think they're necessarily either in this case. I would consider them a program. I would go even further to say vaurca are more synthetic than they are organic, and I'll explain a bit of this. I think that brains are similar enough to programs that if you distill the two and put them side by side, they would be nearly identical. I also think that with sufficient enough technology, you could do the very same with the rest of the body, and compare its activity to a machine built the same way. But I digress. All vaurca are built with a purpose in mind - built. They are hatched and then they are designed for whatever task their higher power deems necessary, much like the other sapient species do with synthetics. The most synthetic of vaurca obviously being a fully augmented bound, I think that no matter how you spin it, even the least augmented vaurca is more synthetic than organic for this reason. I think that when a vaurca is uploaded into VR, it's no different than transferring a program. After all, the definition of synthetic is to be synthesized, or to not occur naturally. Zoom and enhance on that. This sounds like you have an idea somewhere in that brain of yours, but there's a lot of room for interpretation. Zoom. Enhance. Thanks for the super nice words! I think synthetic lore deserves a diversion from what we see on station - I know we're being held back a little by game mechanics, but I'm not here to shove anything aboard the station just yet. I'm here to create. And this is still going to be super vague, and I'm sorry, but I'm having trouble finding the right words. I think we need to diversity the types of silicon-based life that we see in the lore. I want to see more variety in the robots we write, and I want to give them culture. I think they deserve it, after huge chunks of them have been given rights in Tau Ceti. They finally have the opportunity to grow on their own. -

Awesome, let's get down to this. Trivial lore is little details that I think, make universes feel more alive. Subcultures and pop cultures and social things, etcetera. Trivial, I feel, gives these things an undeserving negative connotation. I believe so. I consider myself pretty good at streamlining text. Uh, I need clarification on this. Are we talking about like, hardcore image editing, or just finding images suitable for a cause? (I do have a small amount of images I've edited, if you'd like to see) Only on rare occasions would I not be, like being out of the house, or something of that nature.
