  1. Now, that round was an anomaly. Up to the shuttle being called, shit was hitting the fan, what with the announcement of Aurora getting shafted by Cent Comm. We had no Warden, only one official Head (until Saintsbury showed up out of the blue), and a security force that left some things to be desired, in terms of competence. He can complain about how uncooperative I was, but the only time I saw our Chief Engineer was when he ignored the opinions of his counterparts and recalled the shuttle. Yeah, I arrested him, but I was prepared to immediately release him for good, if he set up a quarantine area in Departures so that we could protect those who weren't infected, to which he replied no. By that point in the round, I had already had my hands full running emergency calls and the Brig, because while I had reliable officers like Hunter and IAM, the rest of my department was not as satisfactory. I had to rescue an officer who was stupid enough to be tricked and ambushed by several known agitators, only to find that I was the only able officer on the scene for 5 minutes, and I had around 5-6 hostile crew members. After that debacle, I was delighted to find a Ripley smashing its way into my Brig. Then, of course, you had the virus come in and fuck everything up in a very un-RP manner (no calls for a ransom prior to its release, or any vague threats regarding bio-terrorism). By that point, Jim and Vitellia made the call to remove the crew from the station immediately, and OOCly, I doubted that we'd get the ERT we needed, but the ERT we deserved, which wouldn't be the ERT we needed. I read his comment many times over, and all I saw was mostly salt and little substance. His comments were very, very disrespectful but I wasn't offended, because he was nigh-useless during the round, considering I didn't hear from him until he ignored a decision by two other members of the Command Staff. He called me an uncooperative, disloyal crew member, and that is simply not true. I have disobeyed or rebelled against those leaders that I hold in high esteem, like the Taryks, Vitellia, Raschnikova - and those are only 3 names. I don't even rebel that much, but I do take offense when something goes against what I perceive as just and fair. Jim's loyal to his conscience, instead of being some Fuhrer-fearing Gestapo thug. If anything, a leader should respect someone who calls them out, because that gives them a perspective on how people view their actions. Had he presented his argument in a much calmer, thought-out, eloquent manner, maybe I would take him seriously. However, he wrote this piece during the round in question, and most of it is unfounded, borderline-slander against Jim's good name. I challenge him to name ten occasions in which I had rebelled or turned on my superiors. If his claims are legitimate like he believes, then it shouldn't be too hard to recall such things. Until he can calm down and actually substantiate his claims, I'll fight tooth and nail against his rhetoric.
  2. Firstly, I don't want to change your mind. It's not my biggest concern, hombre. Let me break things down for you. 1. Mister Vitellia and Interim Commander Calhoun, after witnessing multiple departments crippled by the virus, made the call for evacuation based on the fact that barely anyone could do their jobs without passing out every 10 seconds or groaning the entire time. Pestov showed up out of nowhere and recalled the shuttle without consulting with either of us, so do not talk to me about not talking things through. 2. I don't care what you think of me. Call me a brute all you want, and all I will do is continue to watch the salt as I sip my bourbon. I don't get along with everyone, nor do I expect to get along with everyone. Realistically, you can't expect to get along with everyone. Yeah, Jim's a bit of a paramilitary, especially since he spent his career in military and paramilitary occupations. He's not supposed to be a cuddly sort; he's supposed to be a bit bitter and antagonizing, to an extent, but he is not a traitor. If he sees something that's not right, he's going to take a stand, however I can't remember a single rev round in which I've sided with anyone other than Security. 3. You act as though you know me well, but I assume it's the salt flowing through your veins, hombre. Honestly, I've never encountered you before. 4. I'm not a doctor, so therefore I have no patients. Sorry Charlie.
  3. I am aware of this, and thank you for pointing out that the transition from governmental to private service, was not very clear. If you read his dossier, it gives the years that he served, and in which organization. I would like to add a link, but my phone sucks.
  4. How has your experience in service alongside Jim Calhoun treated you, so far? Has it been positive? Negative? In between? Let me know how you feel.
  5. Personally, I think that given that multiple character can and should be different, that whitelists should only apply to a single character, rather than grandfathering in every character that they make. I didn't apply for this for multiple characters; I applied for this as part of Jim's character development. I respect their viewpoints and their opinions greatly, and I do admit that I was confused by the process. Thank you for informing me of this, however this is solely for Jim's development as a character.
  6. I appreciate the feedback, however if it's not a +1 for Jim, then I advise you to respect me by changing your vote to -1 instead. Jim's not a cuddly fella; he's vocal in his opinions, and while I have made mistakes during some rounds, I have generally tried to hold him in a decent light. With all due respect to Bling, I advise them to keep their eyes open next time and identify why Jim has taken an issue with them in the first place. What that involves is a one-on-one intervention to identify the root of the problems. Keep in mind that I am not hiding the negative side of Jim, nor am I taking offense to negative responses.
  7. BYOND key: Redfield5 Character names: Jim Calhoun. How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Coming close to 8 months, I believe. Why do you wish to be on the Whitelist?: Jim hates when pay gets suspended. He's got bills to pay and dependents to support. What he wants is a promotion so that he can cover his bills and make ends meet without having to make an extraordinary effort. Deep down, however, it's a chance for him to redeem himself after being removed from the ERT and transferred to the ISC. Why did you come to Aurora?: I was on CM, I had a crew that I liked to roll with. Then, baldies showed up. Crew started falling apart, so I split. It was becoming a bit of a cesspit, with no significant RP and constant salt. I wanted a story, something that I could help tell. Aurora crafts interesting stories, with substance and intrigue. It's not a shoot-'em-up like CM; everything is drawn out and much more enticing for those who love stories. Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes, I have. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is generally defined as the method of changing one's behavior to suit a role, but I think that it is much more than that. What roleplay is is the ability to craft a story - an interesting story - with many other people. The realm of the roleplay is not limited by the imagination and charisma of a single mind, but rather shared by all, enabling a truly unique experience crafted within a productive, symbiotic environment. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: His/her job is to oversee a specific department on board the station, but is ultimately one of the 4 members of the Command Staff, that oversee all operations aboard the NSS Aurora. Each role is unique in how it operates, and how it contributes to the functionality of the NSS Aurora as a self-sustaining station. For example, the Commander of the Security Department does not solely act as a police chief, but he/she can be a magistrate, emergency first responder, and sheriff, requiring him/her to master many different aspects of their role. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: The Whitelist is much more than a simple extra job or extra race. It's bragging rights, and it's a symbol of what it takes to be an accomplished roleplayer. Trust me, people will remember you and your actions, especially if you're a member of the Command Staff. To be on the Whitelist is to say: "I have worked hard to develop this character and learn a specific skill. You know, I want something more. I want the ultimate challenge in my field, and I am going to give it my all." In a way, it's also a symbol of maturity. You're a name, now. You hold the power of an entire department - and an entire server - in your hands. You could be a Chief Engineer, and let Lo Singulo get loose, ruining the whole round. Or, you could run an effective, competent department, and you can grin with pleasure and rapturous glee as you see as the OOC channel is flooded with comments praising your department or personnel. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character Name: James Raymond Calhoun. Character Age: 38. Please provide a short biography of this character: Jim Calhoun is a Level 2 Security Officer with the NanoTrasen Internal Security Corps, stationed aboard the NSS Aurora. He got his start with the Sol Alliance Army just after high school, spending 8 years with the 5th Expeditionary Division and retiring at the rank of Sergeant, seeking better-paying work the the NanoTrasen Fleet Security Force. His service with the elite infantry of the Sol Alliance Army merited him an appointment for ERT Selection, and he successfully completed the program to earn a spot aboard Section Phoenix. He served for 7 years as a Standard Trooper, however he was removed from the ERT and transferred to the ISC for his role in instigating a tense stand-off with Elyrian soldiers who were en route to Sol as part of a joint Sol Alliance-Elyrian training operation on Mars, after Phoenix had been called in to harass their vessel with a random inspection. He was transferred to the NSS Aurora's Security Department, a role that he honestly doesn't mind, given the drop in the amount of danger he faces. In terms of Jim's personal life, he is an Earth-born man from a decent Earth family. He is arguably the black sheep of the family, given that he joined the service as a way to protest his parents' desire for him to attend college. Jim was married at the age of 20, to a fellow service member named Mathilde Voermann, with the two celebrating the birth of their son, Robert, the next year. Jim and Mathilde were married for 11 years, until constant bickering and general dislike of one another forced them to get a divorce, with Mathilde winning custody of Robert. Currently, Jim is struggling to make ends meet, what with alimony, child support, rent, and other services requiring him to muster exorbitant sums of cash, with 16-year-old Robert's recent diagnosis of cancer only adding another weight to Jim's shoulders. What do you like about this character?: He's generally committed to his department, but he's also got his own set of morals. He's not afraid to question the leadership if something doesn't sound right to him. Jim exhibits a strong sense of loyalty to those that he respects, though he tends to joke around more often than he should. What do you dislike about this character?: It's not really about Jim being a bad character, but sometimes I will bleed in some salty shit into the character, and make him seem like a total sleezeball and a stupid shit. However, I've been working to keep this in check by viewing every round in a positive light, or as a learning experience. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He knows how to lead people, and he knows what's right for his department and for his station. The guy has had plenty of experience in Security-related fields - 20 years, in fact. Jim recognizes what he's getting himself into; life is about to get much harder, but a little extra cash and a challenge to redeem himself personally is worth the extra work. In addition to this, he knows his role as a Commander first and an Officer second. He's more than willing to work the beat when it's a one-horse-town aboard the Aurora, but when he's got a stacked department, his duty is not to micro-manage his department by running calls, conducting interviews for "routine" cases, or running the Brig. Quite simply, he'll ensure that his department works hard, diligently, and adhering strictly to a code of ethics. Jim's got his coarse edges and dark humor, but he understands the importance of a reputable department. The "Gift of Gab" and positive rapport, in Jim's opinion, are two of the most - if not the most - powerful weapons that an officer can possess. He wants his officers to meet their fellow non-security employees and strike conversations, to let them know that Security is there for public safety, not for oppression. He's seen first-hand what a positive rapport can do for an officer that's working a tough call. Quality is another big deal for Security. No case should be ignored, no call half-assed with an unjust arrest. To further enhance the department's quality, Jim is confident that Incident Reports, up-to-date criminal records, and the usage of newscasters and public announcements to promote the department's interests are paramount in keeping the quality of the department surging ever higher and higher. The last - and truly not the least important - facets of Jim's plan are his lack of tolerance for screw-ups in his Department and the need for strong integrity and self-respect. He plans to operate with a three-strike policy: #1: Sit-down with Commander, review of event, counseling to rectify event and promote renewed adherence to the department. #2: Punishment not including demotion. Possibly work details, desk duty, Brig tours, and other corrective actions. #3: Motion for demotion from the Security Department. For a department to be truly successful, its employees must go the extra mile to maintain a professional, productive posture. Jim Calhoun is prepared to enact that policy, and to maintain the respect and loyalty of his personnel in the execution of that task. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I'm decent, but I will never stop learning. My NationStates account, Cylarn, has been nominated for - and won - several RP awards for the freeform roleplaying community of NationStates, Portal 2 the Multiverse. However, just because a few people liked what I wrote does not mean that I am at the top, not yet. Extra notes:
  8. Valloran Vitellia is not a name that Jim drops too often, but he holds a favorable view of Vitellia in a Command capacity.
  9. The one, the only, Jim Calhoun.

  11. RP Information RULES 1. This is my RP. Ultimately, my word is the law. I'm a fair guy, but don't antagonize me by breaking the rules. 2. If I designate a Co-OP or multiple Co-OPs, then understand that these individuals are my representatives at all times. Their word is my word, unless I say otherwise. 3. If you go idle with your character, I will contact you after 48 hours (unless you are instrumental to the RP dynamics, then you'll be contacted much sooner). You'll have 48 hours at the most to get back in touch with me, or your character will become a potential casualty. If you must leave the RP or if you won't be able to post, please let me know beforehand. 4. Bounty-fishing is a dangerous occupation. In the event that you make a decision, there will be advantages and consequences. If you damage your equipment, you'll obviously find that your ability to perform your job will be hindered. In many cases, the right decisions are the difference between life and death. The job is dangerous, regardless of whether you're positioned in a vehicle or if you're under the waves with nothing more than scuba gear and a spear gun. 5. Bigotry, racism, trolling, and other deplorable acts have no place in the OOC. Available Bounties (Right now, we're going to start off with a single bounty, and after that, I will allow a selection of bounties to choose from. That is only if we can complete our first bounty.) Marianas Islands, Pacific Ocean - A UN science expedition has gone missing while conducting a survey of Marianas Trench. The last known transmission from the expedition gave the location of an entrance into one of the caves that supposedly held a large number of ACs, and AC activity in the area of the islands is high. The US Pacific Fleet has beefed up security in the area, with the UN's special naval attache, Admiral John Lockhart, assuming command of the naval task force charged with curbing the ACs in the area. The US government has offered $5 million USD to Hydra in order to utilize the Hyena and its crew to seal the trench and prevent further ACs from emerging. Claws and Teeth of the Hyena When it comes to being prepared for the multitude of hardships that come with being a bounty-fisherman, the Hyena doesn't fuck around. Allow me to go over the weapons systems that this vessel is equipped with. Expect this list to be updated, as we further delve into the various devices that could be used by the crew in their trade. - First and foremost, the Hyena comes equipped with a 90mm harpoon cannon mounted at the bow of the Hyena, manufactured in Iceland and built to haul in the largest of the whales. The cannon fires a large harpoon, which has a line attached to it for towing in ACs. Such weapons are immensely useful in catching ACs. Inflatable ballast tanks are also utilized, as the air contained inside forces ACs move slowly and to be closer to the surface. - At the port and starboard sides of the ship, the Hyena has 2 machine gun mounts attached at the bow and stern, serving four of the eight M240 Bravo General Purpose Machine Guns that are on board the Hyena. The "240 Bravos" are commonly used to weaken harpooned ACs, as well as to fend off direct attacks by ACs. Two 240s are also supplied to the helicopter, in case the need arises in which the helicopter needs to be armed. The RHIBs can also be equipped with a single 240 each. - The Hyena contains an armory, in which a good number of firearms and ammunition are stored, among other weapons and equipment. In terms of specialty equipment, the armory houses a Barrett M107 anti-material rifle and an FN Ballista sniper rifle, used for taking precision shots on surfaced ACs. A collection of underwater weaponry is stored here, from underwater rifles and powerheads to high-grade explosives and EMF devices for warding off ACs sensitive to electromagnetic forces. There are also tranquilizing agents, for use in subduing an AC without killing the creature, in addition to nets, cables, and other devices that are paramount when a crew wishes to secure an AC for transport to whichever idiot has paid an exorbitant amount of cash for a creature that could potentially cause them millions of dollars in damage in less than a minute. From the first days that humans first began to explore the oceans, seamen told rumors of fantastic and terrifying creatures who thrived in the Seven Seas. Whether it be a massive treasure galleons being dragged to the darkest abyss of the sea by a massive tentacle-bearing demon, or fisherman being forced to engage in vicious fighting with large, mythical trophy fish, we all assumed that these stories were nothing more than tall tales crafted by superstitious folk in order to explain certain tragedies that people at the time had no idea how to explain, rather than by invoking the supernatural or the mythical. Many stories of ships being dragged under by sea creatures were easily explained by meticulous scientific research into the various phenomena that surround the ocean, such as wave patterns and ocean storm systems such as hurricanes. Sightings of "sea monsters" were further debunked as being cases of mistaken identity, with some fish and sea creatures resembling mythical monsters, while other sightings were discovered to be erroneous rumors spread by sailors who delighted in scaring other seafarers. But for some cases, there was no real way to explain what happened. Those answers would come to us, albeit in a truly terrifying way. Truth be told, the research into the origins "Aquatic Cryptids" (a term coined by marine biologists, collectively refers to all sea monsters) is in its infancy, only really taking off in 2011. Here's what we know: sometime in 2010 and 2011, the world was taken by surprise by a massive number of "confirmed" sighting of ocean creatures listed as "crypids," with videos of the creatures circulating on YouTube and the world's naval powers investigating record losses in maritime commerce and offshore drilling operations due to destructive incidents caused by the sea monsters. The most infamous incident of this phenomenon was "The Ascension Affair," in which a cruise ship - the SS Ascension - was attacked by a massive squid-like sea creature in the South Pacific. Two naval destroyers that were in the area, the HMAS Interceptor and USS Thornton, responded to the Ascension's distress signal. A YouTube video shot by an American sailor depicts the two ships arriving at the scene just as the squid brought the Ascension under the surface of the water. The 2-hour-long video shows the two destroyers engaging the beast, with both suffering heavy losses and damage before finally killing the creature with a massive amount of firepower. Followed up by numerous reports of other ships being destroyed by both similar and different creatures, the world was facing a major maritime crisis. There's no definitive answer as to how or why these creatures have just suddenly shown up and begun to challenge humanity's position as Apex Predator of the seas. A large portion of the scientific community - most notably NOAA - hypothesize that the sea creatures once lived under the seabed, in great underwater caverns that were opened during a series of undersea earthquakes. These creatures come in various shapes and sizes, with some resembling prehistoric fish and others appearing to be very alien in form. A number of scientists believe that a small number of these creatures may have already been active above the caverns, explaining reports of cryptids such as the Loch Ness Monster, the Kraken, and Megalodon. Not all of the cryptids are aggressive; some care not for challenging the humans, and instead act as any other fish in the sea. Others are much more aggressive and/or territorial, viciously investigating any foreign object in its domain, whether it be a floating island of trash or a cargo ship. Humanity itself was now faced with a force that truly threatened its dominance. Governments and corporations alike poured substantial sums of cash into various methods of protecting their assets at sea, researching applications to detect, deter, and eliminate this new threat. The US led the way, employing technology and tactics to not only safeguard its coasts, but also to protect its interests at sea. Convoys became much more common, with up to 100 vessels traveling together with well-equipped defense attachments to prevent any sort of threat from compromising further shipping losses. Oil derricks at sea worldwide now often have naval attachments or private maritime security attachments in order to ensure that the oil keeps flowing. Whether it be on a boat, or under the waves, many make a living fighting these beasts. Many say that a war is being fought between the land and the sea, as many navies now consider their top aggressor to be "ACs." Despite the public largely wanting the ACs to be destroyed, conservationists have pleaded with the governments of the world to conduct a limited campaign, focusing more on defensive strategies rather than systematically hunting down and destroying the cryptids. It's an interesting war, so to speak. The seas are much more dangerous than previously thought. Our Voyage With this new hardship comes new opportunity. While the navies of the world are acting mostly in a defensive posture at the behest of the UN, a new market has opened up, centering around capturing, studying, or killing these beasts. Private individuals - many of whom operate without "proper" equipment - seek bounties for beasts, and have begun the dangerous tasks of tracking and hunting down ACs, whether it be for defense, commercial reasons, scientific study, or pure pleasure. The whole idea of hunting down these beasts is dangerous, but a competent crew with ample equipment could earn as much as $250,000 for hauling in a single AC, depending on the size, type, and reputation of the beast. We call this "bounty-fishing," and our focus shifts to the story of one particular crew. You, my friend, are one of a select group of individuals serving aboard the SS Hyena, a research vessel-turned bounty-fishing vessel. The Hyena isn't a heavily-renowned vessel in the world of bounty-fishing, but it is certainly one of the most diverse, in respect to its capabilities. The Hyena carries 4 jet-skis, 2 RHIBs, 2 DSVs (Deep Submergence Vehicle), and 1 HH-65 Dolphin helicopter, as well as high-quality living quarters, a state-of-the-art floating research lab, an armory outfitted with a myriad of equipment vital for a wide range of bounty-fishing operations, a medbay outfitted to conduct short-term intensive care operations, a heavy-duty harpoon gun, and advanced sonar equipment for detecting ACs. Depending on its crew, the Hyena will either become another statistic, or it will go down as the most successful bounty-fishing vessel of the 21st Century. It's all up to you. Will you brave the dangerous waters and catch fortune?

    The List

Jim Calhoun - Security Officer. Formerly a Sergeant in the Sol Alliance Army, as well as a former ERT trooper. A bit lewd, but he's generally good-natured. Prone to brusque, profanity-laced outbursts and confrontations when confronted with something that he doesn't feel is right.
  14. The live feed opens to a view of a grey room, appearing to be some sort of office. A bookcase sits back against a wall, and some various certificates, awards, and photos hang on the wall. It appears as though the computer from which the feed is broadcasting from is sitting atop an oak desk, as hints of such can be seen at the bottom of the screen, which slightly betrays the surface of the oak desk as well as a black office chair. A pack of Dromedary Cigarettes, a white paper napkin folded into a neat square, and a bronze ashtray also sit atop the desk. The room seems to be devoid of life, no signs of the occupant. A sound is heard, a door being opened. Into view walks Jim Calhoun, dressed in a long-sleeved grey shirt and a pair of blue jeans. In his right hand is a glass tumbler filled with an amber liquid and 3 ice cubes, while a bottle of Uncle Git is clenched in his left. Placing the bottle on the desk, his left hand pulls the chair out, and Jim takes his seat. He then sets the glass down on the napkin and goes for the soft pack of cigarettes, producing a single cancer stick that he places in his mouth. His left hand goes for his pocket, producing a Zippo lighter, which he then flicks open in a manner that seems almost second nature. Without pause, the orange flame of the lighter is raised to the end of the cigarette, burning the processed combination of nicotine, tobacco, and other harmful substances. Smoke slowly rises from the cigarette, as the end glows red-hot with Jim taking a drag. Jim sets the lighter down, keeping the cigarette in his mouth as his hazel eyes drift to the computer. If one is observing closely, they can see a slight increase in the wideness of his eyes, likely at acknowledgement over the surprisingly fast speed of the connection to AskMe.nt. His right hand removes the cigarette, setting it down in the ash tray. He looks towards the screen, and gives a brief smile before speaking, his voice carrying the distinct drawl of the American South, but with enough of a neutral American dialect that keeps him from sounding like a complete hick. "Howdy, folks," he begins, his voice carrying a welcome tone. "Welcome to my AskMe.nt account, and thank you for taking the time to check it out. For those of you who are not familiar with me, my name is Jim Calhoun. I work as a Security Officer aboard the NSS Aurora. I'm 39-years-old, and I am from Charlotte, North Carolina, back on Earth. I served in the military prior to working for NanoTrasen, for whom I have been serving with in both the Fleet Security Force and the Internal Security Department." Jim takes a brief pause to take a sip of his whiskey. 'Sip' is a loose term, because Jim manages to finish off the tumbler of whiskey with a single, long sip. He sets the glass back down, and turns back to the screen. "Let's get down to brass tacks. This site is for asking questions, and that's why I am here right now. I am more than happy to answer any questions that you might have, be they about me, about the Security Department aboard the Aurora. Feel free to ask for advice as well, for anything from legal help to picking out the right liquor." Jim leans back in his chair, his eyes locked to the screen as his left hand goes for the bottle, his right twisting the top off. He then refills the tumbler, before moving the bottle back to the side. His right then goes for the cigarette, bringing it up to his lips as he slowly inhales the noxious chemicals, exhaling a cloud of smoke.
