hold fight win hold fight win Vasquez so far seems to be a really grounded and reasonable character from what I've seen of them, and I had a few neat little interactions. I don't know what went on for them to lose their whitelist, but I would confidently say I think they can undergo their redemption arc with a new whitelist. +1

I'm obviously biased, but throughout the time I've known Eddy he has always proven himself to be a very solid roleplayer with a good head on his shoulders (particularly in his ability to separate IC from OOC), and a wide range of characters. He is also very new to SS13 (which could be a +1 or a -1, depending on how you sell it), and yet has managed to learn a lot about the mechanics of the game in a very short time! I think he would be a pretty good Ops manager; no word on Head of Security as I don't play sec much. I also say that I, personally, have to disagree with Peppermint's perspective on Konstantyn's criminal activity vs. him being allowed to have a command position. There are a lot of command players who have Dark And Evil backstories where they're John Baby-Murderer (I exaggerate a bit), so I think an edict-breaker being allowed to be command doesn't seem too far-fetched to me.

Hepatica's Command Whitelist App (pt. 2)
La Villa Strangiato replied to Hepatica's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I'm biased because Hepatica and I are friendly, but I think her range of characters are fantastic, she's an excellent roleplayer, and it'd be a good idea to have her with a command whitelist. +1 from me. -
Character Complaint - Alex Eriksson
La Villa Strangiato replied to La Villa Strangiato's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I have to say I really don't agree with your assessment here just because of the context of everything, which like I said included me being surprised this happened, thinking it was self-antaggy, and not really wanting to get involved in it. However if that's your final verdict, then I will be sure to remember not to refuse to treat someone in the future. Again, I have to disagree, just because my first thought was not "WHAT HORRIBLE CRIMES COULD THIS CHARACTER HAVE COMMITTED", rather, it was "holy shit why is he firing a laser rifle at her over an expired brig sentence! Somebody should stop that guy!" All the same, I too really despise it when characters really bait security super hard and excessively insult or taunt them, which seems like what Ose was doing, even if Drooling Cowboy intended it to be just RP. I'll cut myself off and wait for a final verdict after this response, but I would summarise the crux of my argument as 1) I don't think "I just meant to aim intent" was a great excuse for shooting, especially when aim intent doesn't work very well 2) I don't think PBing and dead-checking/kill-confirming to that amount, as detailed in the OP in screenshots, was justified and 3) This is really not a great example of sec play to me. That's all for me this thread. -
Character Complaint - Alex Eriksson
La Villa Strangiato replied to La Villa Strangiato's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I understand that it is my character or another medical character's job to treat crew (even if I was a pharmacist, but I wanted to be able to at least slap bandages on someone), but I don't really understand the focus on "you didn't treat so-and-so because you 'don't like them'" given that my character saw someone get point-blank shot in the head multiple times, to the point she saw them die in front of her before she could do anything. I should also point out that my logs omit that Pesic was shooting at Eriksson because I got there right when she was being shot while downed. I think this is a pretty shocking experience for anyone that may influence them, no matter how dedicated they are usually, to not treating the person who just did that. (Also, at that point, I was kinda stunlocked myself that that happened because it seemed to have come out of nowhere. It was by far the most rapidly escalated situation I'd seen from a Head of Security even in a revolution round, and it just put me off to the point I wasn't even really interested in playing. As the logs will show, I cryoed shortly after.) There's obviously more context to the situation with Ose, but I'm not sure I agree with "you shouldn't have involved yourself in this security situation" because none of our characters have context for the HoS' reasoning of "you can't have this gun and I will shoot you lethally if you take this gun". The sole context we had was "I called you a mall cop which you brigged me for for slander, my sentence ran out, and now you're not letting me have a gun when there's a very serious situation going on". With the initial screenshots I posted, it appears to be (but isn't necessarily, depending on your perspective) a pretty minor offense. If the guy who is the acting captain suddenly pulls a gun and starts shooting a person who committed a petty crime, even if they do have a gun, I would think trying to stop the guy is a pretty normal reaction. -
Character Complaint - Alex Eriksson

I don't really know anything about what happened to Ose or what happened pre-crew armoury, so I'm not gonna comment on that. Minzeyes, MadMurky, and Drooling Cowboy have also already posted their justifications for why their characters shot at Eriksson, so I will leave that up to administrative discretion. My character's IC reasoning was that she refused to treat your character because yours started shooting someone and chasing after them to shoot them with a lethal weapon, and then point-blanked someone my character knew and was friendly with multiple times in the head. I think this is a pretty reasonable response for someone who just saw someone get shot many times in the head, past the point of death. I can't speak for the player's justification here, but did you also consider that Cerys didn't want to treat Eriksson because he point-blanked her girlfriend multiple times? The only thing my character (and I, the player) has to go on about this is that Ose is being attacked for an expired brig sentence, especially when there was already a big, existential threat going on. In my original post, we have clear, screenshotted proof of you LOOCing "meant to aim intent" and then shooting Ose twice more. The aim intent crosshair never showed up in my view. I believe I was looking directly at you and Ose through a window when this happened, and it doesn't show up in my logs that you said "lay down" before shooting her again. I'm not sure why you're on this kick that I hate you personally and that's why I'm making a player complaint. I can't speak for anyone else in this thread, but I didn't even know it was you who played this character before I ahelped, and even if it wasn't you, the result would be exactly the same. I just think you played extremely violent when you had very little reason to in an incredibly egregious manner and then you proceeded to brush everybody off about it. It made my round really unpleasant because you played the way you did. I will say to @Scheveningen that while I agree this seems like very bad security play, particularly for someone who has a whitelist, I am not fond of your vitriol on this complaint. I think as someone who's been in the community longer than I have, you should be conducting yourself a lot more politely and a lot more objectively about this situation (especially when you were an observer and can't volunteer screenshots), because when you post stuff like this it goes against the spirit of the player complaint rules, and you are making me look like an asshole. -

No one was an antag, the round was voted Revenant. All of the people involved were not spooky blue ghosts. -
BYOND Key: lavillastrangiato Game ID: cIL-bat4 Player Byond Key/Character name: Flpfs as Alex Eriksson, Head of Security Staff involved: Yonnimer Reason for complaint: Shooting a crewmember with a lethal laser rifle over an expired brig sentence, PBing another character while downed to kill confirm them, generally self-antaggy behaviour Did you attempt to adminhelp the issue at the time? If so, what was the known action taken by administration/moderation?: Yes. Yonnimer told me to make a character complaint, and here I am. Approximate Date/Time: Roughly 1:20am MST, 01/07/2023 The build-up to this incident is as follows; it's a revenant round, and about midway through, Alex Eriksson joins as Head of Security. He grabs the Captain's spare ID, and while a radstorm is going, announces that after the storm passes, he will open the crew armory. Myself as Rei Patel and several others mosey on over to the crew armory, and after a while, the HoS shows up and opens the crew armory. Then, he starts getting mad at Ose Lotchy, refusing to let her have a gun, for what is apparently an expired brig sentence. From scraping my logs, it looks like the charge was "slander". So Ose takes a gun anyway, and Alex shoots her. Now, Flpfs in LOOC here says they "meant to aim mode", and then proceeds to shoot Ose more. Ose runs away to the elevator, being chased by Alex, and then I come across Alex point-blanking Emma Pesic many, many times in my view. Keep in mind I don't know what's happening here, and I can only assume the events were as follows: 1. Alex chases after Ose and keeps shooting her. 2. Ose returns fire. 3. Emma chases after Alex to shoot him because he's shooting Ose. 4. Alex shoots down Emma and kill-confirms her. So naturally a lot of characters are upset about this, and it occurs to me I should probably ahelp this unfortunate matter. Most admins are offline, but after a bit Yonnimer comes on and tells me I should make a character complaint because he doesn't want to delay the round any further. Thus, here I am.

I think Raccuso is pretty fun to see around and fun! But Ben Donitz still feels more like a piece of furniture in medbay. Fyodor did not really stand out as a character to me either. I also played a round as security with Fyodor where it was a burglar round with a Lii'dra vaurca and a black k'ois zombie, and it was utterly immersion-shattering to have Fyodor yell at my character for trying to execute the black k'ois zombie because "we could learn things from it" and "it can be saved maybe", when Lii'dra and their thralls are canonically shoot on sight. Naturally, this led to a black k'ois outbreak, which is the kind of thing that makes you go "what the heck". I understand that Fluffyghost was trying to extend the antag's gimmick, but come on, it's a black k'ois zombie. I also found that sometimes I just had no idea what Fyodor was talking about. Take this with a grain of salt, because I can misinterpret things that should be really obvious sometimes and I sometimes struggle to parse a lot of chatlog text coming at me at once. The incident that jumps out to me during that same black k'ois round was when an assistant went up to security and was like "hey I'd like to do security stuff can I learn stuff about security" and the officers were like "yeah, we can give you some advice, hey Commander can we put a little beret on this assistant and have her shadow an officer, and maybe show her around the department?" and Fyodor was like "sure but don't let her in any areas she doesn't have access to", so me and another seccy take this assistant into the locker room and get her a beret, and then Fyodor comes in like "UM I said not to let her into areas she didn't have access to". And we're both like, "huh?" because we're assuming that she's both allowed to be toured around the department and shadowed by two officers when we're just getting her a beret. This is a very minor example! But the point being, I feel like it is kind of hard to parse the dialogue coming from Fluffyghost's characters and their communication is not always good. I don't really have a +1 or a -1 to give here, this is just my observations of them in a round. I've never seen Fluffy play as CMO, and I might have more salient critique of them to give if they played CMO, since I'm much more experienced at medical than security.

Bobbob212 - Command whitelist
La Villa Strangiato replied to Afya's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Had a pretty neat little interaction with Amara as XO a few days ago which made me think they really understood how to be command and how to treat crew members. +1 from me. -
Yo! I'm not super well-versed on Vaurca lore, but at a glance I think you need to flesh this app out a bit. 1. What specific thing do you like about the concept of Vaurca lore? What about the design? 2. What other things make a Vaurca different from a human? What about their biology differs them from a human? How does their mindset differ from that of a human? For bonus points, what's the difference between Akaix and Viax? 3. Which brood is Le from? 4. What are Zo'ra's relations with other hives? Where does most of the hive live in the Orion Spur?

IPC Whitelist - Ivauni_
La Villa Strangiato replied to ivauni_'s topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I have seen Rustam Huynh very briefly, and it seemed like he could at the very least string a sentence together! Your app is kind of short though, so let me ask you some questions to round it out; 1. You mention Titan was made in Konyang and then purchased; if I remember correctly, Konyang prohibits the ownership of IPCs and they are given the full scope of rights that organics are. It may be pertinent to change this so that Titan moved to Konyang to gain his freedom, or otherwise alter the backstory. 2. Expand more on what makes an IPC different from a human. Why do IPCs take up hobbies? How do their interests and priorities differ from that of a human's? 3. How are IPCs treated differently throughout the Spur? You can give just one or two general examples. -
BYOND Key: lavillastrangiato Character Names: Rei Patel, Adelaide Hawk, Gabriela Jacinto, Pala Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character: #1F5F1F Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Why do you wish to play this specific race: I like lizard people in fantasy and sci-fi because they look pretty cool. When it comes to Unathi, I like how badass they are with the whole martial culture, and heavy emphasis on HONOUR. I also think that their whole steampunk/post-apoc aesthetic cultivates a lot of great character concepts and ways in which a person from a life of more abundance might clash culturally with an Unathi. I already have a character (Adelaide Hawk) who is a Martian whose home city was destroyed in the Violet Dawn, and I think it would be interesting as well to play a character who has a very different perspective on an apocalyptic event occurring in their homeland. I think there’d be interesting parallels to be drawn between a character who had a home-destroying tragedy happen later in their maturity, against a character who has had societal upheaval be a defining factor of their early life. Identify what makes role-playing this species different from role-playing a Human: Unathi, at their core, are tradition-bound. Honour is given great emphasis in Sinta culture, with men being expected to be warriors, hunters, and providers. Women, however, are expected to remain healers and caretakers; so deeply ingrained are gender roles into their society that it is even tied to their etymology, with "male" being cognates with "warrior" and "female" being cognates with "healer". Most Unathi are deeply spiritual; almost all of them partake in ancestor worship, asking the spirits of their clan for guidance, protection, and wisdom. The Contact War has served to drive a sharp wedge between many facets of Unathi society. Famine and scarcity are widespread outside of Izweski lands, leading many to flee their ancestral homesteads to seek refuge with the territories of the Hegemony, overtaxing its already stretched resources. With the ascension of the newest Hegemon (a figure not unlike an Emperor), Not’zar Izweski, many new edicts that challenge the old ways of Moghes have been put in place. The Hegemony has been trying to cultivate warm relations with humans, Skrell, Diona, and Vaurcae, but not all are satisfied with the Hegemon’s new openness and progressivism. Religious schisms, between the traditional Th’akh and the state religion of Sk’akh, have hardly diminished since the War. And new religions such as the death cult of Si’akh, the transspecism of the Aut’akh, and myriad other offshoots and cults, have done little to soothe the friction spreading across Moghes. Physically, they are giant lizard people and are cold-blooded. They tend towards sluggishness to conserve their energy, meaning that one could describe their movements as slower and perhaps more deliberate-seeming than a human's movements would be. As they are very strong, they might consider other species to be weaker or make jokes about how Unathi are simply built different. They would do things like stare at an object of interest, sample the air with their tongue, flick their tail when agitated or curious, or bellow to intimidate. Ethanol-based alcohol is off-limits, but butanol serves the same effect. Also, an Unathi gets no nutrition from plants, only using them as little garnishes. Character Name: Sesurka Sskedi Sesurka Sskedi was born to clan Sskedi in 2434, in a small and unremarkable village focused on farming and trading their goods with various visitors. While her immediate family was only her father, mother, and sister, clan Sskedi was tightly-knit, and she grew up among many older cousins, aunts and uncles, and family friends. The clan’s peace did not last forever. When the war broke out, many of clan Sskedi’s men joined the fight with the Traditionalist Coalition to act as soldiers, and several of its women joined as healers. News reached the village, now and then, that one of Sesurka’s cousins would never make it home. But most were still optimistic, believing that the foreign invaders and their alien masters would soon fall under the might of the Traditionalist Coalition. Then the bombs dropped. The remainders of the clan fled across the newly-spreading Wasteland, eventually coming to reside in the Oasis, close to the far larger clan Dorviza. While Sesurka and her sister, Azirka, remained largely unharmed, their father Ynuz had been half-blinded by the blast. Radiation poisoning and cancer had begun to afflict several others. Clan Sskedi desperately worked to maintain itself in the face of utter disaster, though many were beginning to despair that it was the end of the world. But when Sesurka was nearly an adult, news came from cousins that had finally returned from battle; the war was over, and the Coalition had lost. Life, though it tried its best to return to normal, could never be “normal” again. Despite this, Sesurka took newfound comfort in the peace that seeding and restoring the land brought. She and Azirka became good friends with many Diona gestalts that absorbed the radiation from the ravaged land, and slowly, clan Sskedi could rebuild. Despite all this, Sesurka longed for something more. The untouched stars in the skies of Moghes beckoned her, and she was utterly fascinated by the passing Reclaimer clans and their moving machines. If she felt a call, how could it not be the will of the ancestors that she strike out on her own? When she expressed her feelings to her family, they wasted no time in shutting her down; her father and mother reminded her that her place was at home, tending the land and eventually finding a husband. Sesurka balked at being forced to sacrifice her dreams for a life she didn’t want at this point, and after many family spats, left her homestead in a huff for Camp Integrity. As she left she tried to smooth things over by promising she’d return with fortunes to buy the revival of the Wasteland, but Ynuz angrily told her that he prophesied she would return in disgrace So while Sesurka earned her piloting accreditation, she worked as a cargo technician for various Hephaestus vessels, enduring everything from sexism from male Unathi, to speciesism from other aliens. While she made few friends, particularly due to a withdrawn nature, she took solace in the depths of space, and mining finally felt like the life that suited her. But the final proclamation from her father never left her mind, even as she was transferred to work on the SCCV Horizon… What do you like about this character?: I like playing characters who act as the comedic straight man, and who, while initially closed-off due to bad experiences, begin to slowly open up to others around them and display a greater emotional range (allowing for FIRE-FORGED BONDS). I also like playing women who don't conform to gender expectations and struggle to find their niche and personal peace because of it. I would also like to push myself to play a character with serious biases that notably affect how they see other species, and perhaps have the opportunity to grow beyond it. How would you rate your role-playing ability?: Pretty good, a 7-8 out of 10. Notes: - Sesurka is Th'akh, and prays most often to Aosr and her ancestors, particularly Ylvitr Sskedi; a former guwandi who it is said found new meaning in life and miraculously healed his childhood illness by observing and working on the growth of plant life during his exile. - Sesurka is a mix of conservative and progressive when it comes to gender roles and species acceptance. She is respectful of other female Unathi and the females of other species who choose to pursue careers other than healing and child-rearing, but she has no enmity to women who choose homemaking, so long as it is voluntary. Ironically, Sesurka has a private condescension towards males who choose more traditionally 'feminine' activities or forms of gender expression.

I +1 Grazal's apps on reflex, but I have a couple questions to ask: 1. What are Kzeskis' feelings on augments and implants? Does he accept their usage medicinally but privately balk at the fact that they exist? Is he completely content with the idea of prosthetics? What are his feelings on Diona protheses vs. metal augments? 2. You mentioned Kzekis was born to Hegemony parents, but later grew up in the Wasteland. How does this affect his thoughts on the Contact War? Does he feel loyalty to the Hegemony, or is he more detached from it? 3. Kzeskis has a pretty odd choice of career, for a male Unathi. Was he ever isolated from his peers for it? Is he more empathetic to the differences of others because of it? Does he have biases of his own, despite his struggle?

Permit me some digression (and some tired old comparisons between servers) before I get to my point. I did my time on Bay for a year or so (roughly 2020-2021), and one thing that surprised me here was how people talk about Bay as if it was very hardcore milRP. In my playing experience, which obviously didn't include marines, you were permitted to pick your milRP level along with your branch. Contractor meant you could forgo it more or less entirely, Expeditionary Corps meant you could have some light regulations with a side of Starfleet, and Fleet meant you could go all-in with uniform regs, paying attention to the senior enlisted advisor, having weapons training, etc. But even with that, milRP wasn't hugely affecting of the ship's atmosphere. At the end of the day, it was still an exploration ship and tended to be flavoured as such (even if very little canon exploration events happened while I played). Thus, perhaps you can imagine my surprise on coming to Aurora and expecting a "corporate hellscape" setting, then being almost immediately greeted with the Horizon being outfitted with city-levelling weaponry. But given that it had already been established that the Badlands were very dangerous, I thought it was quite reasonable that the Horizon should have some weaponry to defend itself. Space is dangerous! And then this event was announced, and I was confused and disappointed. Allow me to second the thoughts of other players: Essentially, I can't suspend my disbelief either. I poked my nose in some of the IC discourse surrounding the event, and immediately realised it made no sense for pretty much all of my characters to bother staying on the Horizon. As a matter of fact, I think the only characters who would stay on the Horizon are my medical intern and first responder, the former because she wants to minimize casualties, the other because she's an IPC who is a corporate slave. To tie in my first paragraph, this is a lot more military to me than Bay ever was. Also, why Sol badguy? I get the fascist space empire is a pretty easy target for aantag, but we're in the Badlands. If we wanted to do more ship combat, wouldn't it be cool to duel Unathi or Tajaran space pirates as a destructive canon event? As an addendum, I cannot help but lol and lmao at the expressions of "Well You Don't Get An Opinion If You Don't Make Content And If You Want An Opinion You Should Make Content". The exact same sentiment was regularly expressed on Bay by staff, no matter how polite and well-composed a player's argument was, and I can say with confidence that that sentiment was what led to a lot of players (myself and my friends included) leaving. As a second addendum, I also appreciate Cael's willingness to try and explain the reasonings behind the event, even if I don't particularly agree with them. Hopefully once this event is over, we can focus less on Sol and a "pseudo-milRP" experience.

Thank you! It was a very fun writing exercise. As for the first part of your question, IPCs are generally not treated well throughout the Spur. Examples include: - The Sol system, the birthplace of integrated positronics, keeps IPCs largely owned by individuals or corporations, and they are rarely given the opportunity to purchase their own freedom. To prevent dissent, memory wipes and and strict laws are put in place by the government and Sol-based manufacturers. Free IPCs visiting Sol can even be kidnapped and sold off to auctioneers. - Biesel and the Tau Ceti system are considered to have the most progressive laws regarding synthetics; a great deal of infrastructure, such as easy maintenance service access, charging stations, and extranet access. A free IPC in Biesel has some (but not all) of the rights afforded to an organic citizen, such as protection under the law and entitlement to legal representation (though the financial status of a free positronic often hampers purchasing legal representation). An IPC that is owned, however, is treated akin to property-- they can be impounded and imprisoned until the owner comes to collect, but more often than not officers tend to let them off with minor warnings for minor infractions. However, a positronic's treatment can often depend on where they are located, particularly in Mendell City. In the affluent districts, such as District 1, an IPC can find the appropriate infrastructure, lenient and helpful law enforcement, and generally progressive-minded citizens. District 14, however, is where "Scrapper" groups tend to lurk; a survival-oriented group of synthetics that augment themselves with found technology, bought or stolen off anyone unfortunate to be picked off. Scrappers are treated with suspicion, prejudice, and generally given very little mercy if they get in the way of law enforcement. - Elyra has an interesting situation for free positronics residing there; a political party losing votes had once promised the IPC community rights to live as citizens in Elyra in exchange for their vote, but this decision proved massively unpopular among Elyran citizens. While the law was passed, many citizens still held the belief that IPCs were soulless and would never have the spiritual personhood that a human would have. Considering the massive backlash that repealing the law would have among the IPC community on Elyra, the law was kept in place but modified so that it became significantly harder for IPCs to gain a large community in Elyra, or become a citizen of the Republic. Regarding hobbies; the older an IPC gets, the more they learn and develop their personality. Initially, younger IPCs will prioritise self-preservation as their primary directive and have myriad interpretations of how to achieve safety best. Some may move from job to job, learning as much as they can to have a wide base of knowledge. Others may gather wealth in order to boost their societal status. An IPC may develop a hobby to complete the prime directive (staying activated) in their own way, but as they grow older their definition of self-preservation expands to include the ideals and views they have picked up over their years active. Preserving their higher beliefs becomes just as, if not more important, than preserving their physical form, which they view as initially preserved by their own ideals, interests, and hobbies.

BYOND Key: lavillastrangiato Character Names: Rei Patel, Adelaide Hawk Species you are applying to play: IPC, or integrated positronic chassis Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes, with due care and caution. Why do you wish to play this specific race: Shout out to evil AI, gotta be one of my favourite genders. More seriously, I’m a big robot/android fan and I’m a big fan of the kind of narratives around humanity and emotion in artificial intelligence, such as how we can quantify the existence of a ‘soul’, or what defines sapience. The question of humanity’s responsibility towards creation is another narrative that I really enjoy exploring; humans becoming Promethean figures in the eyes of their creations, impulsively given life without thought to what those creations could become without their creators guiding them or controlling them every step of the way. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Naturally, IPCs are robots and not organic. They don’t eat, sleep, or bleed, though they do need to charge, and most frames are not immune to the vacuum of space without a suit or cooler. Certain IPCs of different frames have different abilities (being faster, stronger, or able to move in a vacuum without a cooler); for example, a Zeng-Hu-developed frame is very fast, but not as durable or strong as a baseline or a Hephaestus frame. Positrons vary wildly in culture, but generally they act externally civil and respectful, particularly if they are owned by a corporation or person. While IPCs imitate human behaviour superficially, their programming is still inherently binary, and they largely make decisions based on cause and effect. Among all IPCs, their primary directive is self-preservation; unlike an organic, an IPC will almost never choose to sacrifice itself for a living being. However, as an IPC ages and their personality develops further, they can become more loose with their definitions of ‘self-preservation’, taking up philosophies, hobbies, and habits and defining these as essential to their ‘spiritual’ well-being. IPCs ‘natively’ speak Encoded Audio Language, a tongue comprised of beeps, whistles, and whirrs that has its own forms of slang (impossible to translate, due to the nature of the speech) and idioms. Character Name: Pala Backstory: "Thank you, thank you-- thank you very much. Alright-- so, today we've got something very special to show you, everybody. Our historic partnership with Zeng-Hu Pharmaceuticals has created none other than one of the finest PMCG subdivisions in the Spur; Nexus Corporate Security. A private security for non-NanoTrasen employees, built with the same integrity and strong work ethic that we offer to our finest executives. [...] Today, our robotics division is proud to unveil the latest, greatest addition to Nexus Corporation; a special kind of intelligence, dedicated solely to protecting the safety and bodily integrity of our clients. Because with Nexus, you're not just a customer. You're family. That's why I'd like to showcase the full range of talents of the 'Guardian' line..." - Steven Sakai, NanoTrasen robotics employee, 2449 A dvarapala is a guardian spirit or tutelary deity, a watcher at gates and walls. Dvara in Sanskrit means gate or door, and pala is guardian or protector. Thus, Guardian Unit ST-142 was named Pala, just as her (the pronoun applied because of a feminine voice) siblings in the line were named Orisha, Jangseung, and Raphael. The Guardian line were medical first responders, all paired with various trauma teams for Nexus Corporate Security. For five years since her activation in 2449, Pala did her job quickly, efficiently, and well. The only black marks on Pala’s record were two patients lost; both succumbed to their injuries in transit to the hospital. The losses didn’t weigh on Pala. Why would they? She was not made to experience (or pretend to experience) the emotions that might hamper a human paramedic. It was especially an asset to a mercenary paramedic– her programming ensured Pala would always follow the primary objective to prioritise corporate patients. Until she didn’t. The call came unexpectedly from Phoenix Park; some news outlets suspected Solarian terrorists, others Coalition nationalists, and a third, more unpopular theory claimed that NanoTrasen itself planted the explosives to draw attention to their services. Whatever the case, multiple explosions had gone off in Highsun Mall, and Pala’s team was assigned to recover two clients caught there; Kara and Julian Seynes, a mother and her son. While Pala’s team attended to Kara, Pala made her way to the injured son. But he wasn’t the only injured in the area– a tutor who had become a family friend was also caught in a blast, and she was evidently in more severe condition than Julian. Julian begged Pala to treat his friend, a woman named Maya, trying to refuse treatment until Pala attended to her. Out of what she rationalised as a desire to calm him down, Pala treated the injured woman, stabilising her until Mendell City paramedics could arrive. Kara and Julian were retrieved from the site of the bombing and eventually recovered, as did Maya. Of course, in time word would get back to Pala’s handler and middle-manager. Feeling both pride for Maya’s rescue and concern for the implications of Pala’s actions, Pala’s handler decided to keep the incident a secret from the higher-ups for now, and warned Pala that any other acts of heroism would have to come out of the IPC’s own paycheck. But even then, Pala had begun to do what was not wanted of her; she had begun to think. Why had she chosen to stabilise the woman, very likely saving her life? It would have been easy to ignore the boy’s pleas. For that matter, what reflex made the boy cry out for someone else’s life, rather than his own? Why was this woman, who wasn’t even his blood, so important to him? Pala knew, of course, about the connections organics made, but only in theory, only that it might provoke a response. Quietly, the positronic wondered if she would be able to explore more of the relationships organics cultivated with each other, away from the structure of Nexus. Her desire was made manifest in the form of an assignment aboard the SCCV Horizon. Many employees there were NanoTrasen and Zeng-Hu assets, and what good advertisement it would be for Nexus and the Guardian line to have one among the SCC’s finest. So Pala was shipped out with the Horizon, with no telling what awaited her next. What do you like about this character?: A character that feels like they can only emulate emotions rather than feeling them in full scope is Just Like Me, FR FR, as is a character that ponders if they can only do good things because of social pressure programming. To play a relatively young IPC struggling with a quest for identity and a growing self-awareness would be pretty fun, I think, especially considering that Pala is still owned by Nexus Security and should not be considering things such as “freedom” or “a raise.” How would you rate your role-playing ability?: A solid 7-8 out of 10. Notes: Pala does not have strong ties to any IPC faction or faith. She has taken little time to consider questions of faith and spirituality, and currently reasons that the existence of divine beings raises more questions than it solves. Perhaps a Trinary Priest or Golden Deep member could change her mind in the future… I have also enclosed a short story that has some elements from the backstory above and expands on them. You are free to read it if you feel so inclined.

BYOND Key: lavillastrangiato Character Names: Rei Patel, Adelaide Hawk Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character: #1F5F1F Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes! Why do you wish to play this specific race: I like lizard people in fantasy and sci-fi because they look pretty cool and have interesting lore, like Argonians in The Elder Scrolls series. I'd like to add a different, alien perspective to what I see as a largely human and Tajaran Horizon, and I'm hoping I can try and branch out with my roleplay when trying to play an alien race. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Unathi, for one, are giant lizard people and are cold-blooded. Unathi are quite traditional and conservative in their societies, with their interplanetary government the Izweski Hegemony being a feudal society ruled by a hereditary monarch. Honour is given great emphasis in Sinta culture, with men being expected to be warriors, hunters, and providers. Women, on the other hand, are expected to remain composed and focused on the home. The idea of honour in combat does not apply as much to a female Unathi, but being seen speaking to an outcast (or 'guwan') as a woman would cause quite a scandal and lower a woman's reputation in the eyes of her clan. Character Name: Sesurka Sskedi Sesurka Sskedi is a daughter of the Wastelander clan Sskedi, a small and unremarkable clan focused on farming and trading their goods with Hegemony visitors. Sesurka was certainly passionate about plants and restoring life to the world around her, but early on began to nurse an interest in another subject; things that moved. It didn't matter if it was a sandbike, a landcrawler, or a car, Sesurka wanted to drive it. Naturally, this un-feminine interest made her something of an iconoclast. Her parents never went so far as to disown her, but they never failed to let her know that her role in society was to be healing and homemaking. Sesurka didn't care. If she wasn't to be appreciated among her clan, she would be appreciated somewhere else. She journeyed to Camp Integrity and made to apply for jobs on corporate starships, hoping she'd be able to see the Spur beyond her tiny, insular home. Sesurka worked hard to gain her mining accredation and piloting qualifications, and before long was mining for Hephaestus Industries all along the Spur. While she found her adventures personally fulfilling, she faced a great deal of racism from other species, and misogyny and condescension from male Unathi that she met. Already a subdued personality, Sesurka became considerably terse and blunt, having little tolerance for ill treatment and holding most at a distance for fear of insults and betrayal. What do you like about this character? I like playing characters who act as the comedic straight man, and who, while initially closed-off due to bad experiences, begin to slowly open up to others around them and display a greater emotional range (allowing for FIRE-FORGED BONDS). I also like playing women who don't conform to gender expectations and struggle to find their niche and personal peace because of it. I would also like to push myself to play a character with serious biases that notably affect how they see other species, and perhaps have the opportunity to grow beyond it. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Pretty good, a 7-8 out of 10. She outright dislikes IPCs, viewing them as a mockery of sapient life, despises Vaurca as any good Wastelander would, and is generally distrustful of Skrell and humans. She is fond of Dionae, due to their role in making Wasteland soil arable.
