    Service Channel

It would be kinda nice to have the quartermaster in the service channel as well, it seems like. I agree that assistants, miners, and cargo techs, as well as the chaplain and librarian, don't need access to the service channel. There's just no point, since assistants, chaplains, and librarians don't provide a specific service by default and the others work as the supply crew. I always thought the service channel was mostly for the bar/kitchen to call for the janitor or supplies from botany, anyway.
  3. I sometimes have difficulty finding opportunities to actually talk to people as well, especially when my department is understaffed. You seem to be doing pretty good lately, after I spent some time hovering around a bit more. As for the personality stuff, that's always a tricky part of roleplaying. The best thing that I've found to do is keep an open mind and keep considering how the character would interact with situations as they become available to interact with in practice. I'm no expert, though, so just keep up the good work. You and the community have convinced me thoroughly, and I'm happy to give my approval, for what it's worth.
  4. Name: Gerard Renalt Age: 59 Gender: Male Race: Human Employment Information ((Please list employment title(s) and levels, and the job tier. Refer to NanoTrasen Occupation Qualifications for further information)): Chief Medical Officer, Level 1, Tier 10 Is there anything that you are legally obligated to reveal, or anything that you wish to notify the crew about: I'll be bringing the missus, if things go according to plan. Signature:Gerard Renalt
  5. I like UnknownMurder as a person, and feel like I've had a number of interactions, albiet not particularly memorable ones, with both Alex Graves and James Silver. Both of them seem to be reasonable and competent, at least while I was interacting with them. The biography that you've provided is colorful and interesting, with lots of detail. However, it does seem like it's either inconsistent with time or just vague enough that I lost track of certain elements. Either way, it's not a huge issue, and it's still a pretty good backstory. I also liked your evaluation of your roleplaying ability and may steal that format at some point, if you don't mind. Your answers for the questions at the top were good, as well. I can see Alex being a good head of staff, so I'll give my approval.
  6. I've floated around Jan as a ghost and bumped into him during my own IC duties often enough to know that Jorge is a pretty good engineer and atmos tech, but I haven't felt like I've seen any strong interactions between our characters or anyone else's. That said, if you want to be a head of staff, I would like to see you take a more active approach to playing Jan. I can't disagree with the negative aspects of your roleplaying ability that you've already noted. However, Jan feels like a planned and deliberate character, which is good, and I feel like his personality could be made more apparent somehow. The biography that you've provided here makes me feel like Jan is more detailed than I'd perhaps previously assumed. As for the actual head of staff position, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I've played off and on with Jorge for quite a while now, and he seems competent enough to be in a command position, but Jan may not be a strong enough presence for the job. I would like to see him have a chance though. That's all I can say for now.
  7. I think I've only seen you IC a handful of times, without any actual in-depth interaction, but you seem like a capable guy. I like the setup of your biography and the detail in the time periods, as well as James as a character. Due to these factors and your willingness to play IA, you've earned my approval for sure. Good luck.
  8. I do have trouble being "mean" IC at times. However, it's something that I've done in the past with some amount of success, and I hope that Sebastian will give me an unadulterated, unwavering nice guy to balance out my roleplaying style. As for the Renalt stuff and all that, it's something that I've spent the last couple days mulling over in my free time while I've been busy with other things. I believe that I'll give it a go with Gerard being Morgan's father who is proud that his son has made a name for himself as a medical professional, but is struggling with Morgan's overzealous dedication to work and neglect of a real social life or definitive social identity. Which basically means that if anyone asks him about Morgan, he'll be happy that they've heard of him, ask them some questions, and then politely excuse himself to grumble and pace around. It should be fun, and a good change of pace. I have never played two characters who had/have such a close connection. Thank you for your excellent feedback, Loow.
  9. Thank you both for your replies. I appreciate the positive feedback. I think I will be keeping the Renalt surname for Gerard, and just seeing how things go for a while.
  10. This could be cool, but I seem to recall that bot patrols can cause a lot of lag. If it's viable, I'd like to see it eventually. This sounds cool too.
  11. I'm not sure that I've got the right guy, but I think I watched you play for a little while recently. Either way, the majority of my judgement will be gathered from the information that you provided on your app. I like the answers that you've given the questions about roleplay and the heads of staff positions, and find that I largely agree with your views. Your biography is reasonably well written and descriptive of the character's life and experiences. I feel like Heinrich would be an appropriate character for the roles that you are pursuing. However, one part of your first paragraph did bother me. I don't know too much about security in SS13 or real life, but it doesn't seem like a security consultant position, interim or not, is an entry-level job. I was under the impression that security consultants had to be experts with security procedure as well as situations that commonly affect secure locations, but I may be misunderstanding your intention or the position.
  12. Not enough IC interaction, yadda yadda. Now, on to making an educated judgement call from other sources. I read through your posts in the Syndicate Transmission Network section the other day and found them to be enjoyable. I've also crept around as a ghost and watched you play Alexa Lei, and enjoyed your interactions with other crewmembers as well. In OOC, you also seem to be a responsible and competent player, and your explanatory statements regarding roleplaying and the whitelist indicate that as well. Your biography was well written and pleasant to read, while also providing a strong sense of the timeline of Jacob's life. I especially enjoyed your choice of setting and the way in which Jacob was taught engineering. His lack of comfortable familiarity with command and social situations also feels well explained, and doesn't make it seem like you just want to be lazy. You have my approval, as well.
  13. You're correct in saying that we haven't had any meaningful IC interactions, Owened. I try to RP with a lot of people, but it's sometimes difficult to spend any actual time with a character IC. Thank you for your time, your kind words, and the +1.
  14. Whoops, that's the kind of thing that usually bugs me as well, but I failed to proofread thoroughly. Thank you for the suggestion. I am still wavering back and forth on my feelings about Morgan as a character, so I am also conflicted about whether or not to introduce another person named Renalt to the station. Thank you for your interest and feedback on the subject, however. I'll take it into account.
  15. I can understand the reasoning that you're using to defend this character, but it has gone too far. When you begin introducing things that don't fit within the lore, you're encroaching upon the work of others. I suggest you find a compromise concerning the planet that your character is from (there are rim worlds, after all), and think of a way for Ames or a similar character to fit the style of play that you're attempting without including elements such as bluespace shrouding and metahumans. You've been given some pretty good suggestions by other players and I think your character could benefit from some of them. I still kinda like the idea of a medieval planet but also think that something like what Hatley is suggesting may make for a more grounded character.

I'd be alright with library access on the PDAs. I do like the atmosphere in the library, though.
  17. BYOND key: Thesir Character names: Morgan Renalt, Sebastian "Rusty" Bucket, Gerard Fournier How long have you been playing on Aurora?: About a week and a half Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I'm tired of playing the characters that I'm currently playing, and want to make a character who is able to take on a head of staff position, but don't feel like he should have to endure being a general staff member for long, if at all. Why did you come to Aurora?: Honestly, I just wanted to play SS13 and the community and HRP status of Aurora attracted me. Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Of course. I've read most of the others as well, although I don't intend on playing anything but CMO. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying, in my opinion, is an interconnected storytelling exercise and a way to provide escapism into a fun environment. I enjoy being able to step into the life of a fictional person and has interesting experiences that wouldn't be possible otherwise. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: To me, heads of staff are players who are capable of patience while teaching the other players how to perform the roles in their department. In addition, a good head of staff player should be attentive to issues in their department and willing to intervene IC in order to help resolve issues between players before they become a larger issue. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Due to the whitelist application process, I feel like whitelisted players on this server are held to a standard of quality in their OOC behavior and their roleplaying interactions with other players. I am willing to help uphold that standard and provide feedback on the writing abilities of the other community members. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Dr. Gerard Fournier Character age: 59 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs):Gerard Fournier grew up in the middle section of the vertical urban sprawl of a French Martian megacity (left unnamed). His father was a bartender and his mother was a secondary school teacher and an aspiring novelist. From a young age, immersed in the stories of dangerous missions outside of the Sol system as well as the harsh criminal underworld of Martian megacities, Gerard was interested in medical care; if not for the charitable aspects of the field, then at least for the lucrative paychecks. Relying upon the powerful NT corporation for much of his education, Gerard was taught standard medical procedure, basic anatomy of humans and xenos alike, virological procedures, and how to prepare for dangerous medical situations, all while indicating an aptitude for teaching other students. Following his graduation and armed with his new M.D., Fournier began work aboard the NSS Apus to experience a real research station while remaining near his friends and family in the Sol system. In his time aboard the Apus, Gerard sustained one injury from a laser pistol during one of the relatively rare hostile incursions upon the Sol-based station, while learning more about genetics, virology, and the types of injuries common among a research crew. After his contract was fulfilled, Gerard spent a few years back on Mars to begin a family with his long-time romantic interest, a telescience researcher with a steady job on Mars. After only a few years into his son's childhood, he once again sought employment with NT.Using his talent for education and his medical knowledge, Gerard took on the position of managing the medical facilities while coordinating and teaching medical courses aboard the NSS Canis Minor. Here, he continued his duties as CMO and teacher until his son began his education aboard the Canis Minor, over 15 years later. Following this, he began to let his role as a CMO take prominence, pleased with himself for his advancement to a position awarded to him for his hard work and with his influence on his son's career choices. However, his inquisitiveness once again drew him towards interest in the NT research stations, and it was not long before he found himself taking an opportunity to transfer aboard a Tau Ceti research station. Now, he is set to enjoy his later years serving aboard the NSS Exodus/Aurora and making frequent visits to his family as they also tour around NT facilities. What do you like about this character?: I like that this character is both an older gentlemen and a plain person from the Sol system, who has lived his whole life alongside NT with little conflict between himself and the corporation. I've enjoyed playing Bucket as an older character, and feel like I'm ready to play an older member of medbay staff again. This will only be my second older, human medical character. I also feel like this is a good opportunity to make a character who is both helpful and friendly, but also gruff and serious on the exterior. It's a decent challenge, and one that I welcome. What do you dislike about this character?: I feel like a coarse exterior character may be viewed as rude or unpleasant in limited interactions with other crewmembers. I hope that I'll be able to provide enough depth to avoid that kind of reputation. I also don't feel like this character fits into a general staff position as easily as a head of staff position, which is slightly irritating but not insurmountable. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He seems experienced enough to provide guidance and education to the medical staff, while also being able to be taken seriously when reprimanding negative actions or behaviors in the medbay. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I feel like I'm bad at judging my own roleplaying ability. I'll go with a 6 or 7 out of 10, to be modest. Extra notes: Second app, after I deleted the first one like a scrub. This is just a quick biography still, though, so I welcome all feedback, especially since this is a character that I do intend to play. Edit: Name is now changed
  18. This is a good idea for IPCs. Roman numerals not only still look messy, but are also still multiple characters for what could be more concisely expressed with just numbers. That said, HK-XLVII is actually kinda theatrical and cool. Maybe a bad example lol
  19. There's no help for that. Both are pretty fun.
  20. I don't think any of my characters have ever encountered yours, unfortunately. If I may ask, what kinds of jobs do you usually play? I appreciate that you're interested in introducing yourself into the controversy surrounding unathi and tajarans. It's an interesting bit of storytelling, and it certainly does make it a different experience when your species is maligned. However, I don't believe I have ever seen you IC and your biography is very lacking. It isn't absolutely necessary, but I feel like this biography could use more detail about Aali Akila's employment history or something like that. Something to make the character feel more grounded in the world that the lore provides. So far, this biography is great for describing this character's personality type, but I can't say that what you've provided here is enough for me to give my approval. I spent a round of extended poking you and your character, and I'm not any more impressed than before. I believe that you could be capable of some good RP work, but if you want to actually interact with the lore by playing a Tajaran, you have some work to do.
  21. I would also like to see this.
  22. That wasn't what I was thinking of. I figured it was a decent excuse to not immediately assume a baldie is suspicious whenever you first see them. Now that you offer that counterpoint, it does seem like it would be an invitation for griefing.
  23. Of course. I wasn't saying anything negative about this particular instance of a longer application biography. I just meant that longer isn't always better, as you already said.

    Holobooks

I agree. OP is a dum. Srsly, though, why isn't this a thing?
  25. I think I've only had very rare interactions with your 'borgs, but I agree with Jackboot in saying that this is a fine piece of work. I'm glad to hear that the unathi lore completely changed your opinion of the race, and am impressed with the thought that you put into even just the cultural distinction between unathi and humans. Although your biography does surpass the two paragraph suggestion, it allows me and others to see that you do indeed have an intimate understanding of your character's past and some of his behaviors. It may not be a "perfect" application, due to its verbosity, but it is certainly a piece of literary art of the character stories variety. It's clear that you felt very inspired by the lore and the species, and although there is not a particularly strong indication of how you intend to play the character of an unathi here, it is profoundly evident that you have a deep respect for the material which has been provided, and I refuse to believe that you can't be trusted with the whitelist for unathi, as well. You definitely get my approval.
