AI Name(s): Play it too rarely to have any.
Discord username + tag: Phi#8706
Age: 25
Timezone: PST
When are you on Aurora?: Usually mid-day, about 1200 to 1800. I often get off before 1900 since I need to pick up my Boyfriend from work at that time. After that I might or might not hop back on for one or two more rounds depending on if I need to cook dinner or not, staying up till 0200 in some cases, but usually leaving around midnight. Latest I am up is usually 0330, and usually that will be on a Friday.

Experience I used to be a Mentor for TGMC before resigning due to lack of interest in the server. I've been told I would be welcomed back if I ever wanted by the head mentor.
How long have you played SS13?: Well over ten years to be honest. But it's been off and on.
How long have you played on Aurora: Almost a year and a half I think.
How much do you know about SS13 (Baystation build) game mechanics?: I am pretty seasoned with every role excluding xenobotany and xenoarch.
Do you have any experience moderating for an SS13 server?:In the early days of TGMC, Mentors often did mild moderation. At the least I was usually witness to said moderation from a staff perspective.
Have you read through the criteria thread; https://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4198 - and believe that you mark off all the criteria?: Yep!
Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: Not really. Maybe a job ban on Goon like, over seven years ago when I was a teenager?

Personality
Why do you play SS13?: It's a unique roleplaying experience you can't get from any other game, despite several attempts to create something similar.
Why do you play on Aurora?: Largely the community. Aurora has probably the best community out of any SS13 server I have played on.
What do moderators do?: Help reduce admin workload, put out fires, handle griefers, and of course help out new players.
What does it mean to be a moderator for our server?: It means helping new players, keeping things running smoothly. Overall making sure the server stays an enjoyable place to play.
Why do you want to be a moderator?: Plain and simple? I want to help. And I have been encouraged by a few staff members to apply.
What qualities do you possess that would make you a good moderator?: I'm pretty level-headed for the most part, and usually mature enough to back away from a situation if that stops being the case.
How well do you handle stress, anger, or insults?: Pretty well I think. I don't get angry too often, and when I do I usually privately vent to friends rather than lash out.

Anything Else You Want to Add:

I think that pretty much covers it, so no.

Interview with the applicant

Spoiler

Alberyk

In your own words; what is the goal of the aurora server? What do you think we are looking to provide with the server?

Phi

A fun high roleplay environment with a believable atmosphere. Basically science fiction done well.

Alberyk

Right, how would you define believable in this case?

Phi

Basically being able to ask, "Could I see this happening in real life?" and saying "Yes."

Alberyk

So, is there any difference between realistic and believable?

Phi

Depends? I would say it's less strict.

Really varies based on how hard into the realism category you are going.

Alberyk

Going from the premise we are supposed to have believable characters; what are your thoughts on a rule, either written or unwritten, that a character should not be doing things that could potentially get them fired?

Phi

Probably too restricting. Also what can and can't get someone fired is heavily up to debate. I'd say people shouldn't regularly doing things that would get them fired, so someone who was infamous for theft and makes me think, "Why are you still here?" unless there's a strong incentive, like they are a researchers which makes them more valuable.

But every once in awhile doesn't break believable IMO, depending on severity and context ofc.

Alberyk

So, would you allow self-antagonist action if it fits within the framework of the character?

Phi

Depends on the action, and heavily on context. Anything that was below a red I could see happening. Red level offenses, I would probably at least poke to make sure things were on the up and up.

Escalation would be my primary concern.

I could see someone doing a lot of bad things if they felt pushed.

But I'm also not entirely sure. Like, straight murder is definitely a no in 99% of cases I would bet. But what Malik did...? Kind of a gray area, really depends.

It's especially for more, interpersonal things I can see it making sense. I can't see someone coming to work and bombing it out of nowhere. I could see someone getting in a bad fight after constant bickering.

Alberyk

Moving into other subject; What are your thoughts on the server and community present state?

Phi

It's really hard for me to tell if things have improved since I was first here, because when I was first here I was basically a different person in a lot of ways. Literally if you subscribe to one particular side of the ship of theseus thought experiment. I would say I am pretty happy with how things are currently. There's always room for improvement, some people I'd like moved around, but if you told me things would remain static as they are now, I wouldn't be particularly upset. I feel a bit like we're in a golden age of Aurora, and that it's important we keep self improving as we move forward.(editado)

Alberyk

What do you think is the most urgent issue, community management/rules wise, that ought to be looked at?

Phi

I can't really think of anything urgent, but if I had to pick one, I think transparency goes miles, and would like to be able to view my notes without having to ask staff. The only administrative action taken against me really hurt me because I felt like I was being punished for things I didn't even know were problems. Most staff didn't even tell me they were noting me, so I had a rapsheet I didn't know about until I had it used against me, because Trish literally said they decided to escalate because of it.

Alberyk

How would you solve that?(editado)

Phi

TGMC has a view admin remarks button in the ooc panel. Lets you see your notes, dates, when they were added, and by who. We also made sure to explicitly tell players if we were noting them. (Which is a practice I'll be taking with me here.) It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but for people like me with a lot of social anxiety about approaching strangers, alongside general paranoia regarding what people think of me, it made me feel a lot more secure.

Alberyk

And what would you do in cases that you don't want for them to see or know about a certain note?

Phi

I'm a bit confused by that. What admin remark would need to be hidden from a player?

Wouldn't that be counter-intuitive to them improving?

Alberyk

For example, you suspect someone from ban evading, but you don't have a proof, you could add a note for another staff in this case.

Phi

Either directly message that staff member or have notes specifically like that which are staff only.

Alberyk

In the case that everyone can see their notes, what would be the difference between notes and warnings?

Phi

Warnings to me feel more like an escalation towards an actual punishment. Notes are for cataloguing behavior to establish a pattern.

TBH notes in practice, as a player, feel more like soft warnings.

Alberyk

Alright, if you could change something in the staff/rules/how things works, what would it be?

Phi

I think notes are probably the only thing I would change.

I have some reservations about this. Do you imagine this being counterintuitive to you being a staff member, and if not - why not?

It's much different when I am in control of the situation. Going to someone to ask a favor of some kind is very hard for me. Going to someone as a staff member to speak to them isn't. The reason it's difficult for me to speak to a staff member I don't know very well to ask for notes is complicated—far too complicated to get into here—but not primarily relevant to moderation. In short: If I am in the position of power, it's fine. And if I am struggling, I won't be hiding it. I'm pretty open.

I absolutely had to ^^

So scenario time. Round has ended. You got around 5 tickets open, everyone tells you a different story and around 60 player are OOC screeching for the restart. One or two fellow mods are asking how long it'll take and to hurry up your tickets (they don't mean evil, they just didn't read them and don't know what a clusterfuck of a situation you are in).

Would you tell them a) to take it to the forums or b) stay calm and go another 15 minutes to figure it out and take the staff complaint from the salty player who got the stick?

Now I don't need a good answer to this ^^ it's just a typical scenario that humbles me whenever it happens. You may be in control with the small question tickets and name changes by knowing the game  and the rules, but that damn ticket at 1:40 that takes to 2:30 always cracks me up.  Because the really good solution there is to ask for help and I kinda need your promise here that you'll do that, even if you don't know the other staff members online that well. Someone will always be around to help, but they may not be paying attention, or doing their own thing and so on... a lot of starting out as moderator for me included asking questions and for help. Having initiative and knowing your limits is how Skull phrased it in the trial criteria post.

Now I am a simple man. I trust you when you say you got this, for obvious reasons you'd still have to prove this during a trial. A trial I'd like to see you in and even help out when it comes to situations like this. Because lets be honest here: Everyone got their own package to carry and I don't know yours well enough to comment on it. I'd like to find out how you do when faced with those difficult situations. Meaning I'd love to see you in a trial :)
