WhatsUpBrotendo Skrell Whitelist App

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: WhatsUpBrotendo
Character Names: Ame'Kaz Szek'Hakh, Ozan Mak'draz, Enzaril Kanza, Dayo Abioye, a few others but I've not played them in ages
Species you are applying to play: Skrell
What color do you plan on making your first alien character: Light brown
Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I enjoy reading the lore, and interacting with players that have the whitelist is always a treat. I'd like to try something new and Skrell are a uniquely alien species, so playing them would definitely be a different experience than the other species I've played.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

There's a few reasons why roleplaying them is so different. For one, Skrell live for a long time, and commonly think about the long-term rather than the short-term. Compared to other species, a Skrell would react differently to a situation and would be more concerned about the long-term effects of their actions rather than the immediate effects.

Skrell also mature at a slower pace, and they have a unique view on adulthood in that experience is as important as age when it comes to being considered an 'adult'. An adult Skrell is not only physically older than an adult human, but they are also more knowledgeable and experienced in life. Skrell mannerisms and how they interact socially are also quite unique, with probing questions when first meeting someone being one of the more obvious differences in social interaction compared to other species.

The biggest difference would obviously have to be Skrell and psionics. How the Nlom works has influenced Skrell society heavily due to how it acts as an echo chamber, preventing new ideas from spreading quickly while keeping popular ideas popular.

Character Name:

Yeqol Xusha

Please provide a short backstory for this character

Yeqol was born in 2389. They are a Xiialt, and was born and raised to a quya of four secondary numericals in the industrial city of Plebu on Aweiji. Like most Skrell, Yeqol was raised to have the drive and self-confidence they'd need to be a productive member of society in the Federation. This translated well during their formative years as they became noticeably gregarious, easily forming friendships with their peers. Yeqol is a member of the Qeblak faith, the dominant religion on Aweiji, and has been a strong follower since they were young.

Their Qrri'Myaq was a drill technician for one of the mining facilities in Plebu, and became the main inspiration for Yeqol deciding to pursue a career in that field. Once they finished their Untuk'mak, they decided to undertake Uyi'vesi, and enrolled in a university where they studied mining engineering, then pursued a second degree in the geological sciences before finally working in the mines of Plebu themselves.

After a few years, Yeqol decided to pick up a contract with NanoTrasen, both as an excuse to explore outside the Jargon Federation, and also as an opportunity to study phoron. Now that there's currently a phoron shortage, Yeqol is trying to make the best of things until their contract is over and they can return home.

What do you like about this character?

I like this character concept since it's a lot different than my usual characters, as my intention here is to make an overly friendly Skrell who's almost completely obedient to authorities. I've also never made a character that's more or less 'trapped' in Biesel because of their contract, so that's going to be interesting.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

7/10. Good, not great. Always trying to improve.

In my time of interacting with your characters especially Ozan Mak'draz, I have found you to be an absolutely baller role-player. I have no doubt you would kill it at being a skrell.

sadly, as I know very little about skrell lore, I don't really have any questions regarding this app. +1 and I wish you the best of luck!

You are definitely a great roleplayer and take into account a lot of aspects of unathi lore for your characters, so in my mind, I have no doubts about you there.

However, a whitelist application also serves as a means to convey your understanding of the lore and what you can do with it. I have a couple of questions regarding your character:

1) Why is Yeqol a strong follower of the Qeblak faith? This implies that they are very devout to the religion's ideals and tenets: which ones appeal to them? Are there any aspects they disagree with? If not, how does their faith impose a challenge in a multicultural workplace?

2) How does Yeqol's colleagues and peers view their job as a drill technician?

3) How does Yeqol view the Federation as a whole? How do they feel about the refugees in Biesel?

3) How does Yeqol view the Federation as a whole? How does he feel about the refugees in Biesel?

1) Qeblak is the dominant religion on Aweiji, so that's the religion they were brought up to believe in. The doctrines Laqiq (obedience) and Vri'Wii (diligence) mesh well with their personality, and plays into how they view the Federation which I'll go into in question 3. Qeblak (at least how I've read it) doesn't seem to have any major issues that a follower would be disgruntled by. Seeing as all followers are allowed to enter observatories when able and take part in the various activities, and the members of the clergy only requiring strong psionic potential (on paper at least, social credit would definitely play a role in being eligible), the faith overall seems to be quite egalitarian. To answer the final point, Qeblak might seem completely bizarre to non-Skrell, seeing as it's a mix of science (the study of astronomical objects) and faith (giving divinity to said objects, and making predictions from them). When it comes to explaining the faith to their colleagues, there may definitely be some points of contention, especially with religions that follow a God/Gods.

2) I'll answer this in two parts since I don't know if you mean their peers back home, or their peers in Biesel. Back home, mining is a necessary job, just because its (relatively) menial labour compared to working in a lab or being a surgeon doesn't make it any less important in the grand scheme of making civilization work. In Biesel, it might be strange to some that a drill technician, which at least by the wiki, doesn't require a university education, would have two degrees related to geology and mining engineering. It could also be seen as wasted potential by some.

3) Yeqol has a strong sense of duty to the Federation, and believes that they are in a way an extension of it, so they must always strive to be a model citizen of the Federation. As I said in my answer to question 1, their religion heavily influences their views on the Federation; the doctrines of obedience and diligence definitely would reinforce his views on both his work and his relationship with the Government, and as a result makes them staunchly loyal to it. On the topic of the refugees, he feels a mix of confusion and sadness towards them. From Yeqols point of view, they're unwilling to work with a Government that to them is a benevolent force that aims to make all their lives better, and in some cases are actively working against it by supporting the resistance cells.

Proof-reading after rewording sentences isn't my strong suit.

I've interacted quite a bit with Brotendo's characters, mostly Szek and much earlier Imran Zadeh, and I think 7/10 is a very modest assessment of their roleplaying ability. Good understanding of the lore here from a player who will always "stay within earshot" when dealing with mechanical obligations to keep fun and interesting RP flowing. Good to get another great roleplayer on the frog team.

Secondary numericals have the right to reproduce taken away from them until their score improves, children already born would be re-homed. Aweiji is close enough to the core that the Federation would have a very strong presence on the planet, and would be enforcing this standard policy.

Other than that, nothing jumps out at me in the application, it's somewhat short, but I believe it meets the minimum requirements and your answers to Haydizzle's questions are detailed. Now I'll throw some of my own in.

1. As a menial laborer in the Federation, you'd have a very high chance of working alongside of Diona and C'thur Vaurca, what does Yeqol think about them both?

2. Outside the Federation, you will often encountered the Skrell's favorite boogeyman, the Synthetic. How does Yeqol feel about potentially having to work alongside them?

3. You've mentioned Yeqol is a strong supporter of the Federation, what's his credit score? Who did he vote for in the recent election?

4. Is Yeqol a listener or reciever?

5. What is Yeqol's favorite food?

On the wiki page it says that the right to reproduce is 'often' taken away, so I didn't see an issue at the time with making them secondaries.

1), Yeqol has some prejudice towards Vaurca because they're ultimately loyal to their hive, rather than to the Federation, but overall doesn't mind working with them. Diona are extremely fascinating to Yeqol and they always make the attempt to interact with them hoping to learn more about the species.

2), While Yeqol distrusts synthetics as a whole due to Glorsh-Omega, they didn't live during that time. They're willing to work alongside synthetics as part of their work, but would definitely try to avoid any prolonged interaction with them.

3), Their credit score is 6.6. While a strong supporter there's been few opportunities to increase their credit score outside of furthering their education even more or forming a quya, both of which take time. Like many other Skrell, Yeqol was impressed with Weashbi Jrugl beating an AI in finding the highest prime number in only a few hours, and voted for them in the last election. Yeqol isn't much of a reformer themselves, but see's no issue with Jrugl's policies, and trusts that Jrugl wants to change the Federation for the better.

4), Like the majority of Skrell they are a receiver.

5), Yeqol loves aqoliz, but for actual dishes they prefer soups like qilvo.
