NerdyVampire Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 It's an old story by now; Secret is selected, we wait a bit.. and then it starts telling us exactly what it wont be rolling this shift. People shout 'DODGED!' in ooc, or complain that people aren't enabling their roles, or comment on how a particular mode never gets picked. And its all true, but what does it really help? At best a few people re-evaluate their enabled roles, but for me personally it is more demotivating than anything. I don't really want to know that there are no Burglars today, or that Bughunt isn't possible either. It gives me a form of meta-knowledge that is unwelcome, even if I wont act on it. After all, don't we choose secret because we don't want to know? How about instead of reporting to the players, it would simply be a little faster and report its 'findings' to the admins? Then spend the time advertising the different roles in general, or just use the time to give players a bit of a longer break between rounds. Maybe send motivational messages to help players be comfortable trying out being an antag. TL:DR Remove the secret filtering messages and simply skip to the final phase without revealing what modes are possible or not possible.
Gromnax Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 I agree. The "dodged" message is particularily a toxic thing to see. But I think it relies more of a general mentality/culture issue with antagonists that can not be deeply fixed with this. It is still a good bandaid.
EJJ Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 I would kill for this mostly to just speed up roundstart when people vote secret with 4 people on and it has to go through every round type before either succeeding or failing on autotraitor and just rolling extended anyway.
Boggle08 Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 I've seen round population fall off a cliff after everyone readies for merc, and it doesn't get slotted in. I don't mind the banter, but I don't like what it does people's willingness to stay locked in.
KingOfThePing Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 No problem: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/14608
NerdyVampire Posted February 8, 2023 Author Posted February 8, 2023 At this time I think we should consider hiding the failed round selections as well if we can for the Secret mode at least? Same reasons as above, no real gain from seeing the gamemodes fail. Maybe @KingOfThePing, unless there is a reason to keep it?

Having them be visible does one of two things. - People who assume one roundtype won they don't want to play don't play and a round of 22 readies ends on 20 or 18. - The round starts with 15 people, maybe 3 have antags on, antag roll fails 12 times and we start a round with 6 people on secret extended.
Carver Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 It's really not hard to guess what failed to roll. I'd hope it could be changed so that there isn't a delay when a mode fails to roll and it immediately checks to roll another until one succeeds, but I don't know if that's feasible.
